Classification of topological phases in one dimensional interacting non-Hermitian systems and emergent unitarity

Topological phases in non-Hermitian systems have become fascinating subjects recently. In this paper, we attempt to classify topological phases in 1D interacting non-Hermitian systems. We begin with the non-Hermitian generalization of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and discuss its many-body topological Berry phase, which is well defined for all interacting quasi-Hermitian systems (non-Hermitian systems that have real energy spectrum). We then demonstrate that the classification of topological phases for quasi-Hermitian systems is exactly the same as their Hermitian counterparts. Finally, we construct the fixed point partition function for generic 1D interacting non-Hermitian local systems and find that the fixed point partition function still has a one-to-one correspondence to their Hermitian counterparts. Thus, we conclude that the classification of topological phases for generic 1D interacting non-Hermitian systems is still exactly the same as Hermitian systems.

Edge theories of 2D fermionic symmetry protected topological phases protected by unitary Abelian symmetries

Abelian Chern-Simons theory, characterized by the so-called $K$ matrix, has been quite successful in characterizing and classifying Abelian fractional quantum hall effect (FQHE) as well as symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases, especially for bosonic SPT phases. However, there are still some puzzles in dealing with fermionic SPT(fSPT) phases. In this paper, we utilize the Abelian Chern-Simons theory to study the fSPT phases protected by arbitrary Abelian total symmetry $G_f$. Comparing to the bosonic SPT phases, fSPT phases with Abelian total symmetry $G_f$ has three new features: (1) it may support gapless majorana fermion edge modes, (2) some nontrivial bosonic SPT phases may be trivialized if $G_f$ is a nontrivial extention of bosonic symmetry $G_b$ over $\mathbb{Z}_2^f$, (3) certain intrinsic fSPT phases can only be realized in interacting fermionic system. We obtain edge theories for various fSPT phases, which can also be regarded as conformal field theories (CFT) with proper symmetry anomaly. In particular, we discover the construction of Luttinger liquid edge theories with central charge $n-1$ for Type-III bosonic SPT phases protected by $(\mathbb{Z}_n)^3$ symmetry and the Luttinger liquid edge theories for intrinsically interacting fSPT protected by unitary Abelian symmetry. The ideas and methods used here might be generalized to derive the edge theories of fSPT phases with arbitrary unitary finite Abelian total symmetry $G_f$.

Accurate simulation of q-state clock model

We accurately simulate the phase diagram and critical behavior of the $q$-state clock model on the square lattice by using the state-of-the-art loop optimization for tensor network renormalzation(loop-TNR) algorithm. The two phase transition points for $q \geq 5$ are determined with very high accuracy. Furthermore, by computing the conformal scaling dimensions, we are able to accurately determine the compactification radius $R$ of the compactified boson theories at both phase transition points. In particular, the compactification radius $R$ at high-temperature critical point is precisely the same as the predicted $R$ for Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. Moreover, we find that the fixed point tensors at high-temperature critical point also converge(up to numerical errors) to the same one for large enough $q$ and the corresponding operator product expansion(OPE) coefficient of the compactified boson theory can also be read out directly from the fixed point tensor.

Lattice model constructions for gapless domain walls between topological phases

Domain walls between different topological phases are one of the most interesting phenomena that reveal the non-trivial bulk properties of topological phases. Very recently, gapped domain walls between different topological phases have been intensively studied. In this paper, we systematically construct a large class of lattice models for gapless domain walls between twisted and untwisted gauge theories with arbitrary finite group $G$. As simple examples, we numerically study several finite groups(including both Abelian and non-Abelian finite group such as $S_3$) in $2$D using the state-of-the-art loop optimization of tensor network renormalization algorithm. We also propose a physical mechanism for understanding the gapless nature of these particular domain wall models. Finally, by taking advantage of the classification and construction of twisted gauge theories using group cohomology theory, we generalize such constructions into arbitrary dimensions, which might provide us a systematical way to understand gapless domain walls and topological quantum phase transitions.

Construction and classification of point group symmetry protected topological phases in 2D interacting fermionic systems

The construction and classification of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in interacting bosonic and fermionic systems have been intensively studied in the past few years. Very recently, a complete classification and construction of space group SPT phases were also proposed for interacting bosonic systems. In this paper, we attempt to generalize this classification and construction scheme systematically into interacting fermion systems. In particular, we construct and classify point group SPT phases for 2D interacting fermion systems via lower-dimensional block-state decorations. We discover several intriguing fermionic SPT states that can only be realized in interacting fermion systems (i.e., not in free-fermion or bosonic SPT systems). Moreover, we also verify the recently conjectured crystalline equivalence principle for 2D interacting fermion systems. Finally, the potential experimental realization of these new classes of point group SPT phases in 2D correlated superconductors is addressed.

Construction and classification of symmetry protected topological phases in interacting fermion systems

The classification and lattice model construction of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in interacting fermion systems are very interesting but challenging. In this paper, we give a systematic fixed point wave function construction of fermionic SPT (FSPT) states for generic fermionic symmetry group $G_f=\mathbb{Z}_2^f \times_{ω_2} G_b$ which is a central extension of bosonic symmetry group $G_b$ (may contain time reversal symmetry) by the fermion parity symmetry group $\mathbb{Z}_2^f = \{1,P_f\}$. Our construction is based on the concept of equivalence class of finite depth fermionic symmetric local unitary (FSLU) transformations and decorating symmetry domain wall picture, subjected to certain obstructions. We will also discuss the systematical construction and classification of boundary anomalous SPT (ASPT) states which leads to a trivialization of the corresponding bulk FSPT states. Thus, we conjecture that the obstruction-free and trivialization-free constructions naturally lead to a classification of FSPT phases. Each fixed-point wave function admits an exactly solvable commuting-projector Hamiltonian. We believe that our classification scheme can be generalized to point/space group symmetry as well as continuum Lie group symmetry.

Anomalous symmetry protected topological states in interacting fermion systems

The classification and construction of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases have been intensively studied in interacting systems recently. To our surprise, in interacting fermion systems, there exists a new class of the so-called anomalous SPT (ASPT) states which are only well defined on the boundary of a trivial fermionic bulk system. We first demonstrate the essential idea by considering an anomalous topological superconductor with time reversal symmetry $T^2=1$ in 2D. The physical reason is that the fermion parity might be changed locally by certain symmetry action, but is conserved if we introduce a bulk. Then we discuss the layer structure and systematical construction of ASPT states in interacting fermion systems in 2D with a total symmetry $G_f=G_b\times\mathbb{Z}_2^f$. Finally, potential experimental realizations of ASPT states are also addressed.

The emergence of 3+1D Einstein gravity from topological gravity

Quantum field theory successfully explains the origin of all fundamental forces except gravity due to the renormalizability problem. In this paper, we proposed a topological scenario to understand this puzzle. First, we proposed a $3+1$D topological (quantum) gravity theory which is renormalizable, and it can be regarded as a straightforward generalization of Edward Witten's Chern-Simons theory approach to $2+1$D topological gravity. Then, we showed that the (vacuum) Einstein-Cartan equation and classical space-time naturally emerge from topological (quantum) gravity via loop condensation. The second step is a unique feature in $3+1$D and it might even naturally explain why our space-time is four dimensional.

Topological Quantum Field Theory for Abelian Topological Phases and Loop Braiding Statistics in $(3+1)$-Dimensions

Topological qauntum field theory(TQFT) is a very powerful theoretical tool to study topological phases and phase transitions. In $2+1$D, it is well known that the Chern-Simons theory captures all the universal topological data of topological phases, e.g., quasi-particle braiding statistics, chiral central charge and even provides us a deep insight for the nature of topological phase transitions. Recently, topological phases of quantum matter are also intensively studied in $3+1$D and it has been shown that loop like excitation obeys the so-called three-loop-braiding statistics. In this paper, we will try to establish a TQFT framework to understand the quantum statistics of particle and loop like excitation in $3+1$D. We will focus on Abelian topological phases for simplicity, however, the general framework developed here is not limited to Abelian topological phases.

Classification of Symmetry-Protected Phases for Interacting Fermions in Two Dimensions

Recently, it has been shown that two-dimensional bosonic symmetry-protected topological(SPT) phases with on-site unitary symmetry $G$ can be completely classified by the group cohomology class $H^3(G, \mathrm{U}(1))$. Later, group super-cohomology class was proposed as a partial classification for SPT phases of interacting fermions. In this work, we revisit this problem based on the mathematical framework of $G$-extension of unitary braided tensor category(UBTC) theory. We first reproduce the partial classifications given by group super-cohomology, then we show that with an additional $H^1(G, \mathbb{Z}_2)$ structure, a complete classification of SPT phases for two-dimensional interacting fermion systems for a total symmetry group $G\times\mathbb{Z}_2^f$ can be achieved. We also discuss the classification of interacting fermionic SPT phases protected by time-reversal symmetry.

Towards a complete classification of fermionic symmetry protected topological phases in 3D and a general group supercohomology theory

Classification and construction of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in interacting boson and fermion systems have become a fascinating theoretical direction in recent years. It has been shown that the (generalized) group cohomology theory or cobordism theory can give rise to a complete classification of SPT phases in interacting boson/spin systems. Nevertheless, the construction and classification of SPT phases in interacting fermion systems are much more complicated, especially in 3D. In this work, we revisit this problem based on the equivalent class of fermionic symmetric local unitary (FSLU) transformations. We construct very general fixed point SPT wavefunctions for interacting fermion systems. We naturally reproduce the partial classifications given by special group super-cohomology theory, and we show that with an additional $\tilde{B}H^2(G_b, \mathbb Z_2)$ (the so-called obstruction free subgroup of $H^2(G_b, \mathbb Z_2)$) structure, a complete classification of SPT phases for three-dimensional interacting fermion systems with a total symmetry group $G_f=G_b\times \mathbb Z_2^f$ can be obtained for unitary symmetry group $G_b$. We also discuss the procedure of deriving a general group super-cohomology theory in arbitrary dimensions.

Exactly Solvable Models for Symmetry-Enriched Topological Phases

We construct fixed-point wave functions and exactly solvable commuting-projector Hamiltonians for a large class of bosonic symmetry-enriched topological (SET) phases, based on the concept of equivalent classes of symmetric local unitary transformations. We argue that for onsite unitary symmetries, our construction realizes all SETs free of anomaly, as long as the underlying topological order itself can be realized with a commuting-projector Hamiltonian. We further extend the construction to anti-unitary symmetries (e.g. time-reversal symmetry), mirror-reflection symmetries, and to anomalous SETs on the surface of three-dimensional symmetry-protected topological phases. Mathematically, our construction naturally leads to a generalization of group extensions of unitary fusion categories to anti-unitary symmetries.

Loop optimization for tensor network renormalization

We introduce a tensor renormalization group scheme for coarse-graining a two-dimensional tensor network that can be successfully applied to both classical and quantum systems on and off criticality. The key innovation in our scheme is to deform a 2D tensor network into small loops and then optimize the tensors on each loop. In this way, we remove short-range entanglement at each iteration step and significantly improve the accuracy and stability of the renormalization flow. We demonstrate our algorithm in the classical Ising model and a frustrated 2D quantum model.

Interacting fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases in two dimensions

We classify and construct models for two-dimensional (2D) interacting fermionic symmetry-protected topological (FSPT) phases with general finite Abelian unitary symmetry $G_f$. To obtain the classification, we couple the FSPT system to a dynamical discrete gauge field with gauge group $G_f$ and study braiding statistics in the resulting gauge theory. Under reasonable assumptions, the braiding statistics data allows us to infer a potentially complete classification of 2D FSPT phases with Abelian symmetry. The FSPT models that we construct are simple stacks of the following two kinds of existing models: (i) free-fermion models and (ii) models obtained through embedding of bosonic symmetry-protected topological (BSPT) phases. Interestingly, using these two kinds of models, we are able to realize almost all FSPT phases in our classification, except for one class. We argue that this exceptional class of FSPT phases can never be realized through models (i) and (ii), and therefore can be thought of as intrinsically interacting and intrinsically fermionic. The simplest example of this class is associated with $\mathbb Z_4^f\times\mathbb Z_4\times\mathbb Z_4$ symmetry. We show that all 2D FSPT phases with a finite Abelian symmetry of the form $ \mathbb Z_2^f\times G$ can be realized through the above models (i), or (ii), or a simple stack of them. Finally, we study the stability of BSPT phases when they are embedded into fermionic systems.

A tensor product state approach to spin-1/2 square $J_1$-$J_2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model: evidence for deconfined quantum criticality

The ground state phase of spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on square lattice around the maximally frustrated regime ($J_2\sim 0.5J_1$) has been debated for decades. Here we study this model using the cluster update algorithm for tensor product states (TPSs). The ground state energies at finite sizes and in the thermodynamic limit (with finite size scaling) are in good agreement with exact diagonalization study. Through finite size scaling of the spin correlation function, we find the critical point $J_2^{c_1}=0.572(5)J_1$ and critical exponents $ν=0.50(8)$, $η_s=0.28(6)$. In the range of $0.572 < J_2/J_1 \leqslant 0.6 $ we find a paramagnetic ground state with exponentially decaying spin-spin correlation. Up to $24\times 24$ system size, we observe power law decaying dimer-dimer and plaquette-plaquette correlations with an anomalous plaquette scaling exponent $η_p=0.24(1)$ and an anomalous columnar scaling exponent $η_c=0.28(1)$ at $J_2/J_1=0.6$. These results are consistent with a potential gapless $U(1)$ spin liquid phase. However, since the $U(1)$ spin liquid is unstable due to the instanton effect, a VBS order with very small amplitude might develop in the thermodynamic limit. Thus, our numerical results strongly indicate a deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) at $J_2^{c_1}$. Remarkably, all the observed critical exponents are consistent with the $J-Q$ model.

Topological quantum field theory of three-dimensional bosonic Abelian-symmetry-protected topological phases

Symmetry-protected topological phases (SPT) are short-range entangled gapped states protected by global symmetry. Nontrivial SPT phases cannot be adiabatically connected to the trivial disordered state(or atomic insulator) as long as certain global symmetry $G$ is unbroken. At low energies, most of two-dimensional SPTs with Abelian symmetry can be described by topological quantum field theory (TQFT) of multi-component Chern-Simons type. However, in contrast to the fractional quantum Hall effect where TQFT can give rise to interesting bulk anyons, TQFT for SPTs only supports trivial bulk excitations. The essential question in TQFT descriptions for SPTs is to understand how the global symmetry is implemented in the partition function. In this paper, we systematically study TQFT of three-dimensional SPTs with unitary Abelian symmetry (e.g., $\mathbb{Z}_{N_1}\times\mathbb{Z}_{N_2}\times\cdots$). In addition to the usual multi-component $BF$ topological term at level-$1$, we find that there are new topological terms with quantized coefficients (e.g., $a^1\wedge a^2\wedge d a^2$ and $a^1\wedge a^2\wedge a^3\wedge a^4$) in TQFT actions, where $a^{1},a^2,\cdots$ are 1-form U(1) gauge fields. These additional topological terms cannot be adiabatically turned off as long as $G$ is unbroken. By investigating symmetry transformations for the TQFT partition function, we end up with the classification of SPTs that is consistent with the well-known group cohomology approach. We also discuss how to gauge the global symmetry and possible TQFT descriptions of Dijkgraaf-Witten gauge theory.

Field theory representation of gauge-gravity symmetry-protected topological invariants, group cohomology and beyond

The challenge of identifying symmetry-protected topological states (SPTs) is due to their lack of symmetry-breaking order parameters and intrinsic topological orders. For this reason, it is impossible to formulate SPTs under Ginzburg-Landau theory or probe SPTs via fractionalized bulk excitations and topology-dependent ground state degeneracy. However, the partition functions from path integrals with various symmetry twists are the universal SPT invariants defining topological probe responses, fully characterizing SPTs. In this work, we use gauge fields to represent those symmetry twists in closed spacetimes of any dimensionality and arbitrary topology. This allows us to express the SPT invariants in terms of continuum field theory. We show that SPT invariants of pure gauge actions describe the SPTs predicted by group cohomology, while the mixed gauge-gravity actions describe the beyond-group-cohomology SPTs, recently observed by Kapustin. We find new examples of mixed gauge-gravity actions for U(1) SPTs in 4+1D via mixing the gauge first Chern class with a gravitational Chern-Simons term, or viewed as a 5+1D Wess-Zumino-Witten term with a Pontryagin class. We rule out U(1) SPTs in 3+1D mixed with a Stiefel-Whitney class. We also apply our approach to the bosonic/fermionic topological insulators protected by U(1) charge and $\mathbb{Z}_2^T$ time-reversal symmetries whose pure gauge action is the axion $θ$-term. Field theory representations of SPT invariants not only serve as tools for classifying SPTs, but also guide us in designing physical probes for them. In addition, our field theory representations are independently powerful for studying group cohomology within the mathematical context.

Fractionalized time reversal, parity and charge conjugation symmetry in topological superconductor: a possible origin of three generations of neutrinos and mass mixing

The existence of three generations of neutrinos(charged leptons/quarks) and their mass mixing are deep mysteries of our universe. Recently, Majorana's spirit returns in modern condensed matter physics -- in the context of topological Majorana zero modes in certain classes of topological superconductors(TSCs). In this paper, we attempt to investigate the topological nature of the neutrino by assuming that a relativistic Majorana fermion can be divided into four topological Majorana zero modes at cutoff energy scale, e.g. planck scale. We begin with an exactly solvable $1$D lattice model which realizes a $T^2=-1$ time reversal symmetry protected TSC, and show that a pair of topological Majorana zero modes can realize a $T^4=-1$ time reversal symmetry. Moreover, we find that a pair of topological Majorana zero modes can also realize a $P^4=-1$ parity symmetry and even a nontrivial $\overline C^4=-1$ charge conjugation symmetry. Next, we argue that the origin of three generations of neutrinos(charged leptons and quarks) can be naturally explained as three distinguishable ways of forming a pair of complex fermions(with opposite spin polarizations) out of four topological Majorana zero modes, characterized by the $T^4=-1$, $(TP)^4=-1$ and $(T \overline C)^4=-1$ fractionalized symmetries that each complex fermion carries at cutoff energy scale. Finally, we use a semiclassical approach to compute the neutrino mass mixing matrix at leading order(LO), e.g., in the absence of $CP$ violation correction. We obtain $θ_{12}=31.7^\circ, θ_{23}=45^\circ$ and $θ_{13}=0^\circ$(the golden ratio pattern), which is consistent with an $A_5$ flavor symmetry pattern. We further predict an exact mass ratio of the three mass eigenstates of neutrinos with $m_1/m_3=m_2/m_3=3/\sqrt{5}$ and an effective mass of neutrinoless double beta decay $m_{0νββ}=m_1/\sqrt{5}$.
