Non-self-averaging topological Anderson insulator

Current research on the disordered topological quantum phases primarily focuses on the uncorrelated and short-range correlated disorder regime. These topological Anderson insulators are typically self-averaging. However, topological quantum systems with long-range correlated disorder have received limited attention due to the absence of tractable analytical methods. In fact, the long-range correlated disorder introduces more complex effects on topological quantum states. Here, we demonstrate that the long-range correlated disorder could induce anomalously statistical feature where the topological Anderson states become non-self-averaging, and the phase diagram is strongly dependent on individual disorder configurations. We term this statistical phase the non-self-averaging topological Anderson insulator. The non-self-averaging property is identified by the non-vanishing finite values of the relative variance of the Lyapunov exponent in the thermodynamic limit, alongside the non-Gaussian distributions of the Lyapunov exponent. Consequently, the topological properties of a single disordered sample deviate from the ensemble average, causing a breakdown of the central limit theorem. The non-self-averaging topological Anderson insulator provides insights into the interplay between correlated disorder and topology.

Topological Anderson insulators by latent symmetry

Topological Anderson insulators represent a class of disorder-induced, nontrivial topological states of matter. In this study, we propose a feasible strategy to unveil and design topological Anderson insulators protected by latent symmetries. These are not visible in the original system, but become obvious after performing an isospectral reduction. Using this technique, we design a family of disordered multi-atomic chains that exhibit latent chiral symmetry or mirror (inversion) symmetry. Using topological invariants, bulk polarization, and the divergence of localization length of the topological bound edge states in the reduced disordered system, we show how to identify the gapped and ungapped topological Anderson states in the original systems. Our work thus extends the concept of topological Anderson insulating phases protected by geometric symmetries and tenfold-way classification to the various types of latent symmetry cases. Overall, our work paves the way for exploiting topological Anderson insulators in terms of latent symmetries.

Topological band insulators without translational symmetry

In the research of the topological band phases, the conventional wisdom is to start from the crystalline translational symmetry systems. Nevertheless, the translational symmetry is not always a necessary condition for the energy bands. Here we propose a systematic method of constructing the topological band insulators without translational symmetry in the amorphous systems. By way of the isospectral reduction approach from spectral graph theory, we reduce the structural-disordered systems formed by different multi-atomic cells into the isospectral effective periodic systems with the energy-dependent hoppings and potentials. We identify the topological band insulating phases with extended bulk states and topological in-gap edge states by the topological invariants of the reduced systems, density of states, and the commutation of the transfer matrix. In addition, when the building blocks of the two multi-atomic cells have different number of the lattice sites, our numerical calculations demonstrate that the existences of the flat band and the macroscopic bound states in the continuum in the amorphous systems. Our findings uncover an arena for the exploration of the topological band states beyond translational symmetry systems paradigm.

Topological doublon edge states induced by the spatially modulated interactions

The topological properties of the one-dimensional interacting systems with spatially modulated interaction in two-particle regime are theoretically investigated. Taking the boson-Hubbard model and spinless fermion interacting model as examples, we show that the energy spectra for doublon (known as two-particle pair) as a function of modulated period exhibit the butterfly-like structure for strongly-correlated limit, whose topological features can be decoded by the topological invariants and topological nontrivial doublon bound edge states. When the nearest-neighbor hopping evolves stronger, the doublon bands could intersect with scattering bands, the one-dimensional interacting systems display the phases of topological insulators and two-particle bound states in the continuum. For a sufficiently larger nearest-neighbor hopping, the doublon collapse takes place, where both the bulk doublon states and topological doublon edge states become unstable and could dissociate into two weakly interacting bosons. For the mapped two-dimensional single-particle systems, numerical calculations manifest the existence of the topological insulator and topological metal phases with corner states located in only one or two corners.

Topological states constructed by two different trivial quantum wires

The topological states of the two-leg and three-leg ladders formed by two trivial quantum wires with different lattice constants are theoretically investigated. Firstly, we take two trivial quantum wires with a lattice constant ratio of 1:2 as an example. For the symmetric nearest-neighbor intra-chain hopping two-leg ladder, the inversion symmetry protected topological insulator phase with two degenerate topological edge states appears. When the inversion symmetry is broken, the topological insulators with one or two topological edge states of different energies and topological metals with edge states embedded in the bulk states could emerge depending on the filling factor. The topological origin of these topological states in the two-leg ladders is the topological properties of the Chern insulators and Chern metals. According to the arrangement of two trivial quantum wires, we construct two types of three-leg ladders. Each type of the three-leg ladder could be divided into one trivial subspace and one topological nontrivial subspace by unitary transformation. The topological nontrivial subspace corresponds to the effective two-leg ladder model. As the filling factor changes, the system could be in topological insulators or topological metals phases. When the two-leg ladder is constructed by two trivial quantum wires with a lattice constant ratio of 1:3 and 2:3, the system could also realize rich topological states such as the topological insulators and topological metals with the topological edge states. These rich topological states in the two-leg and three-leg ladders could be confirmed by current experimental techniques.

Topological inverse Anderson insulator

A different type of topological phase dubbed topological inverse Anderson insulators is proposed, which is characterized by the disorder-induced extended bulk states from the flat-band localization and topological edge states. Based on the topological invariant, the behaviors of the localization length of the zero-energy modes, and quantum transport, we identify its existence in several all-band-flat models with the disordered potentials or hopping including the $π$-flux Creutz ladder, the fully dimerized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain, and $π$-flux diamond chain. Unlike the topological Anderson insulator, where disorder induces localization and exponential suppression of transport, the disorder-assisted quantum ballistic coherent transport can appear in the topological inverse Anderson insulator. In addition, our proposal and results could be realized by the current experimental techniques.

Topological metals constructed by sliding quantum wire arrays

A general strategy of alternated slide construction to craft topological metals is proposed, where there is a relative slide between the odd and even chains in the trivial spinless quantum wire array. Firstly, taking the three-leg ladder as an example, we find that alternated slide can induce a topological phase transition from the normal metal to topological metal phases, which are protected by inversion symmetry. Remarkably, topological metal without nontrivial edge states is found, and the bulk-boundary correspondence breaks down. Secondly, the two-dimensional quantum wire arrays with alternated slide manifests similar physical behaviors. Two types of topological metal phases emerge, where there are gapless bulk bands with and without nontrivial edge states. These results could be confirmed by current experimental techniques.

Reentrant localization transition in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with random-dimer disorder

The question of whether the topological insulators can host a stable nontrivial phase in the presence of spatially correlated disorder is a fundamental question of interest. Based on theoretical investigations, we analyze the effect of random-dimer disorder on the quantum phase transitions of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We explicitly demonstrate that, due to the absence of symmetry, there are no in-gap edge states in certain disordered topological nontrivial gapped phase and the bulk-boundary correspondence breaks down. However, the fractionalized end charges still appear at the ends of the chain. The energy distribution possibility of the in-gap edge states and the possible values of fractionalized end charges are dependent on the concentration of random-dimer disorder. On the other hand, random-dimer disorder and dimer hopping intertwine in an interesting manner. Reentrant localization transition behavior appears, which is evidenced by the fingerprint of the inverse participation ratio, normalized participation ratio, and tunneling conductivity.

Topological phases of the dimerized Hofstadter butterfly

In this work, we study the topological phases of the dimerized square lattice in the presence of an external magnetic field. The dimerization pattern in the lattice's hopping amplitudes can induce a series of bulk energy gap openings in the Hofstadter spectrum at certain fractional fillings, giving rise to various topological phases. In particular, we show that at $\frac{1}{2}$-filling the topological quadrupole insulator phase with a quadrupole moment quantized to $\frac{e}{2}$ and associated corner-localized mid-gap states exists in certain parameter regime for all magnetic fluxes. At $\frac{1}{4}$ filling, the system can host obstructed atomic limit phases or Chern insulator phases. For those configurations gapped at fillings below $\frac{1}{4}$, the system is in Chern insulator phases of various non-vanishing Chern numbers. Across the phase diagram, both bulk-obstructed and boundary-obstructed topological phase transitions exist in this model.

Topological end states in a one-dimensional spatially modulated interaction spinless fermion model

The effect of spatially modulated interaction on quantum phase transition in one-dimensional interacting spinless fermion system is theoretically investigated by exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group method. Our calculations show that the periodically modulated interaction can drive the spinless fermion system into topological charge density wave state. The topological state is encoded by quasiparticle end states and the fractional quantized $e/2$ end charges, and characterized by Berry phase and Chern number. The quasiparticle energy spectra as a function of modulated interaction period appears a stunning fractal-like structure. For the quasi-periodic case, the topological phase transition can also occur. In a word, the spatially modulated interaction can be a new simple and elegant avenue towards realizing to interacting topological phases.

Interplay between fractional quantum Hall liquid and crystal phases at low filling

The nature of the state at low Landau-level filling factors has been a longstanding puzzle in the field of the fractional quantum Hall effect. While theoretical calculations suggest that a crystal is favored at filling factors $ν\lesssim 1/6$, experiments show, at somewhat elevated temperatures, minima in the longitudinal resistance that are associated with fractional quantum Hall effect at $ν=$ 1/7, 2/11, 2/13, 3/17, 3/19, 1/9, 2/15 and 2/17, which belong to the standard sequences $ν=n/(6n\pm 1)$ and $ν=n/(8n\pm 1)$. To address this paradox, we investigate the nature of some of the low-$ν$ states, specifically $ν=1/7$, $2/13$, and $1/9$, by variational Monte Carlo, density matrix renormalization group, and exact diagonalization methods. We conclude that in the thermodynamic limit, these are likely to be incompressible fractional quantum Hall liquids, albeit with strong short-range crystalline correlations. This suggests a natural explanation for the experimentally observed behavior and a rich phase diagram that admits, in the low-disorder limit, a multitude of crystal-FQHE liquid transitions as the filling factor is reduced.

Statistically induced topological phase transitions in a one-dimensional superlattice anyon-Hubbard model

We theoretically investigate topological properties of the one-dimensional superlattice anyon-Hubbard model, which can be mapped to a superlattice bose-Hubbard model with an occupation-dependent phase factor by fractional Jordan-Wigner transformation. The topological anyon-Mott insulator is identified by topological invariant and edge modes using exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm. When only the statistical angle is varied and all other parameters are fixed, a statistically induced topological phase transition can be realized, which provides new insights into the topological phase transitions. What's more, we give an explanation of the statistically induced topological phase transition. The topological anyon-Mott phases can also appear in a variety of superlattice anyon-Hubbard models.

Quantum critical points in tunneling junction of topological superconductor and topological insulator

The tunneling junction between one-dimensional topological superconductor and integer (fractional) topological insulator (TI), realized via point contact, is investigated theoretically with bosonization technology and renormalization group methods. For the integer TI case, in a finite range of edge interaction parameter, there is a non-trivial stable fixed point which corresponds to the physical picture that the edge of TI breaks up into two sections at the junction, with one side coupling strongly to the Majorana fermion and exhibiting perfect Andreev reflection, while the other side decouples, exhibiting perfect normal reflection at low energies. This fixed point can be used as a signature of the Majorana fermion and tested by nowadays experiment techniques. For the fractional TI case, the universal low-energy transport properties are described by perfect normal reflection, perfect Andreev reflection, or perfect insulating fixed points dependent on the filling fraction and edge interaction parameter of fractional TI.

Detecting Majorana fermions by use of superconductor-quantum Hall liquid junctions

The point contact tunnel junctions between a one-dimensional topological superconductor and single-channel quantum Hall (QH) liquids are investigated theoretically with bosonization technology and renormalization group methods. For the $ν=1$ integer QH liquid, the universal low-energy tunneling transport is governed by the perfect Andreev reflection fixed point with quantized zero-bias conductance $G(0)=2e^{2}/h$, which can serve as a definitive fingerprint of the existence of a Majorana fermion. For the $ν=1/m$ Laughlin fractional QH liquids, its transport is governed by the perfect normal reflection fixed point with vanishing zero-bias conductance and bias-dependent conductance $G(V) \sim V^{m-2}$. Our setup is within reach of present experimental techniques.
