Large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in both Nb$_{2}$FeB$_{2}$ and Ta$_{2}$FeB$_{2}$ with collinear antiferromagnetism

It is rarely reported that collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) metals can have anomalous Hall effect (AHE). In this letter, based on symmetry analysis and the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we predict that two existing collinear antiferromagnets Nb$_{2}$FeB$_{2}$ and Ta$_{2}$FeB$_{2}$, whose Néel temperatures are above room temperature, have very large AHE with anomalous Hall conductance (AHC) -100 $Ω^{-1}$ cm$^{-1}$ and $-54Ω^{-1}$ cm$^{-1}$, respectively. We further complete the symmetry resquirements for realizing the AHE in collinear antiferromagnetism.

Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in Antiferromagnetism

So far, experimentally realized quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators all exhibit ferromagnetic order and the QAH effect only occurs at very low temperatures. On the other hand, up to now the QAH effect in antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials has never been reported. In this letter, we realize the QAH effect by proposing a four-band lattice model with static AFM order, which indicates that the QAH effect can be found in AFM materials. Then, as a prototype, we demonstrate that a monolayer CrO can be switched from an AFM Weyl semimetal to an AFM QAH insulator by applying strain, based on symmetry analysis and the first-principles electronic structure calculations. Our work not only proposes a new scenario to search for QAH insulators in materials, but also reveals a way to considerably increase the critical temperature of the QAH phase.

Fractionalizing Global Symmetry on Looplike Topological Excitations

Symmetry fractionalization (SF) on topological excitations is one of the most remarkable quantum phenomena in topological orders with symmetry, i.e., symmetry-enriched topological phases. While much progress has been theoretically and experimentally made in 2D, the understanding on SF in 3D is far from complete. A long-standing challenge is to understand SF on looplike topological excitations which are spatially extended objects. In this work, we construct a powerful topological-field-theoretical framework approach for 3D topological orders, which leads to a systematic characterization and classification of SF. For systems with Abelian gauge groups ($G_g$) and Abelian symmetry groups ($G_s$), we successfully establish equivalence classes that lead to a finite number of patterns of SF, although there are notoriously infinite number of Lagrangian-descriptions of the system. We compute topologically distinct types of fractional symmetry charges carried by particles. Then, for each type, we compute topologically distinct statistical phases of braiding processes among loop excitations and external symmetry fluxes. As a result, we are able to unambiguously list all physical observables for each pattern of SF. We present detailed calculations on many concrete examples. As an example, we find that the SF in an untwisted $\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry is classified by $ (\mathbb{Z}_2)^6\oplus (\mathbb{Z}_2)^2\oplus (\mathbb{Z}_2)^2\oplus (\mathbb{Z}_2)^2$. If the topological order is twisted, the classification reduces to $(\mathbb{Z}_2)^6$ in which particle excitations always carry integer charge. Pure algebraic formalism of the classification is given by: $ \bigoplus_{ν_i} \mathcal H^4 ( G_g\leftthreetimes_{ν_i}G_s, U (1)) /Γ_ω({ν_i}) \,$. Several future directions are proposed.

Magnon Condensation in Dimerized Antiferromagnets with Spin-Orbit Coupling

Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of triplet excitations triggered by a magnetic field, sometimes called magnon BEC, in dimerized antiferromagnets gives rise to a long-range antiferromagnetic order in the plane perpendicular to the applied magnetic field. To explore the effects of spin-orbit coupling on magnon condensation, we study a spin model on a distorted honeycomb lattice with dimerized Heisenberg exchange ($J$ terms) and uniform off-diagonal exchange ($Γ'$ terms) interactions. Via variational Monte Carlo calculations and spin-wave theory, we find that an out-of-plane magnetic field can induce different types of long-range magnetic orders, no matter if the ground state is a non-magnetic dimerized state or an ordered Néel state. Furthermore, the critical properties of field-driven phase transitions in the presence of spin-orbit couplings, as illustrated from spin-wave spectrum and interpreted by effective field theory, can be different from the conventional magnon BEC. Our study is helpful to understand the rich phases of spin-orbit coupled antiferromagnets induced by magnetic fields.

Phase diagram for Hole-Doped Kitaev System on the Honeycomb Lattice

In extended Kitaev models on the honeycomb lattice, off-diagonal interactions (e.g. the $Γ, Γ^{'}$ terms) give rise to non-Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) and several magnetically ordered phases. In the present work, we dope holes to the system and study the resultant $t$-$K$-$Γ$-$Γ^{'}$ model by mean field theory. The interplay between the charge and spin degrees of freedom results in a rich phase diagram. Similar to doped cuprates, superconductors, pseudogap phases, fermi liquid, strange metal and paramagnetic phase are generated. What is different is that, more than one superconducting phases (including a topological one) and more than one pseudogap phases are obtained no matter what the original spin state is. The Chern number of the topological superconductor is either $ν=\pm2$ or $ν=\pm1$, depending on the ratio $Γ/ |K|$ in the spin channel. We further find that an intermediate in-plane magnetic field can slightly enlarge the size of the topological superconducting phase.

Symmetry-protected Nodal Points and Nodal Lines in Magnetic Materials

Nodal-point and Nodal-line structures in the dispersion of electron energy bands are characterized by their high degeneracy in certain corners or lines in the Brillouin zone (BZ). These nodal structures can also exist in the dispersion of itinerant electrons in magnetically ordered materials whose symmetry groups are anti-unitary groups called the magnetic space groups. In the present work, we provide a complete list of magnetic space groups which can host symmetry-protected nodal-point/line band structures for spin-1/2 fermionic particles, where the degeneracies at the nodal points/lines are guaranteed by irreducible projective representations (IPReps) of the little co-groups. Our discussion is restricted to the magnetic space groups whose magnetic point group contains the space-time inversion operation $\tilde T=\mathcal IT$, the combined operation of spacial inversion $\mathcal I$ and time reversal $T$, such that the energy bands are at least doubly-degenerate at arbitrary points in the BZ. For these magnetic point groups we provide the invariants to label the classes of projective Reps, and for each class we calculate all the inequivalent IPReps. From the results we select out all the groups and the corresponding Rep classes which support high-dimensional ($d\geq$4) IPReps. We then list the magnetic space groups and their high symmetry points/lines whose little co-groups have high-dimensional ($d\geq$4) IPReps with the corresponding factor systems. Examples of candidate materials are discussed.

Identification of Magnetic Interactions and High-field Quantum Spin Liquid in $α$-RuCl$_3$

The frustrated magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ constitutes a fascinating quantum material platform that harbors the intriguing Kitaev physics. However, a consensus on its intricate spin interactions and field-induced quantum phases has not been reached yet. Here we exploit multiple state-of-the-art many-body methods and determine the microscopic spin model that quantitatively explains major observations in $α$-RuCl$_3$, including the zigzag order, double-peak specific heat, magnetic anisotropy, and the characteristic M-star dynamical spin structure, etc. According to our model simulations, the in-plane field drives the system into the polarized phase at about 7 T and a thermal fractionalization occurs at finite temperature, reconciling observations in different experiments. Under out-of-plane fields, the zigzag order is suppressed at 35 T, above which, and below a polarization field of 100 T level, there emerges a field-induced quantum spin liquid. The fractional entropy and algebraic low-temperature specific heat unveil the nature of a gapless spin liquid, which can be explored in high-field measurements on $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Thermal Properties and Instability of a $U(1)$ Spin Liquid on the Triangular Lattice

We study the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction on the triangular lattice $U(1)$ quantum spin liquid (QSL) which is stabilized by ring-exchange interactions. A weak DM interaction introduces a staggered flux to the $U(1)$ QSL state and changes the density of states at the spinon fermi surface. If the DM vector contains in-plane components, then the spinons gain nonzero Berry phase. The resultant thermal conductances $κ_{xx}$ and $κ_{xy}$ qualitatively agree with the experimental results on the material EtMe$_3$Sb[Pd(dmit)$_2]_2$. Furthermore, owing to perfect nesting of the fermi surface, a spin density wave state is triggered by larger DM interactions. On the other hand, when the ring-exchange interaction decreases, another anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) phase with $120^\circ$ order shows up which is proximate to a $U(1)$ Dirac QSL. We discuss the difference of the two AFM phases from their static structure factors and excitation spectra.

A Hamiltonian Approach for Obtaining Irreducible Projective Representations and the $k\cdot p$ Perturbation for Anti-unitary Symmetry Groups

As is known, the irreducible projective representations (Reps) of anti-unitary groups contain three different situations, namely, the real, the complex and quaternion types with torsion number 1,2,4 respectively. This subtlety increases the complexity in obtaining irreducible projective Reps of anti-unitary groups. In the present work, a physical approach is introduced to derive the condition of irreducibility for projective Reps of anti-unitary groups. Then a practical procedure is provided to reduce an arbitrary projective Rep into direct sum of irreducible ones. The central idea is to construct a hermitian Hamiltonian matrix which commutes with the representation of every group element $g\in G$, such that each of its eigenspaces forms an irreducible representation space of the group $G$. Thus the Rep is completely reduced in the eigenspaces of the Hamiltonian. This approach is applied in the $k\cdot p$ effective theory at the high symmetry points (HSPs) of the Brillouin zone for quasi-particle excitations in magnetic materials. After giving the criterion to judge the power of single-particle dispersion around a HSP, we then provide a systematic procedure to construct the $k\cdot p$ effective model.

Multinode quantum spin liquids on the honeycomb lattice

Recently it was realized that the zigzag magnetic order in Kitaev materials can be stabilized by small negative off-diagonal interactions called the $Γ'$ terms. To fully understand the effect of the $Γ'$ interactions, we investigate the quantum $K$-$Γ$-$Γ'$ model on the honeycomb lattice using the variational Monte Carlo method. Two multinode Z$_2$ quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are found at $Γ'>0$, one of which is the previously found proximate Kitaev spin liquid called the PKSL14 state which shares the same projective symmetry group (PSG) with the Kitaev spin liquid. A remarkable result is that a $π$-flux state with a distinct PSG appears at larger $Γ'$. The $π$-flux state is characterized by an enhanced periodic structure in the spinon dispersion in the original Brillouin zone (BZ), which is experimentally observable. Interestingly, two PKSL8 states are competing with the $π$-flux state and one of them can be stabilized by six-spin ring-exchange interactions. The physical properties of these nodal QSLs are studied by applying magnetic fields and the results depend on the number of cones. Our study infers that there exist a family of zero-flux QSLs that contain $6n+2, n\in\mathbb Z$ Majorana cones and a family of $π$-flux QSLs containing $4(6n+2)$ cones in the original BZ. It provides guidelines for experimental realization of non-Kitaev QSLs in relevant materials.

Unlocking of time reversal, space-time inversion and rotation invariants in magnetic materials

Time reversal ($T$) and space inversion are symmetries of our universe in the low-energy limit. Fundamental theorems relate their corresponding quantum numbers to the spin for elementary particles: $\hat{T}^2=(\hat{P}\hat{T})^2=-1$ for half-odd-integer spins and $\hat{T}^2=(\hat{P}\hat{T})^2=+1$ for integer spins. Here we show that for elementary excitations in magnetic materials, this "locking" between quantum numbers is lifted: $\hat{T}^2$ and $(\hat{P}\hat{T})^2$ take all four combinations of $+1$ and $-1$ regardless of the value of the spin, where $T$ now represents the composite symmetry of time reversal and lattice translation. Unlocked quantum numbers lead to new forms of minimal coupling between these excitations and external fields, enabling novel physical phenomena such as the "cross-Lamor precession", indirectly observable in a proposed light-absorption experiment. We list the magnetic space groups with certain high-symmetry momenta where such excitations may be found.

Symmetry-protected gapless spin liquids on the strained honeycomb lattice

By including a material-relevant off-diagonal interaction called the $Γ$ term into the Kitaev model and introducing spatial anisotropy in the interaction strength on the honeycomb lattice, we obtain a series of nodal Z$_2$ quantum spin liquids (QSLs) from parton approach. These QSLs share the same projective symmetry group and are characterized by certain numbers of symmetry-protected Majorana cones in their low-energy excitation spectrum. We illustrate that the physical properties of the QSLs are dependent on the information of the cones. Using the $\pmb k\cdot\pmb p$ method, we analyze the chirality of every cone with respect to mass generating perturbations. Especially, for an applied external magnetic field, we provide the maximum-mass field-orientation for every cone. Thus, for arbitrarily oriented weak magnetic fields, we can immediately read out the Chern number of the system and the properties of the resultant chiral spin liquids. The new gapless QSLs predicted in our phase diagrams are promising to be realized experimentally by exerting uniaxial pressure to tune the anisotropy of the interaction strength. We further show that all these QSLs can be distinguished by measurable quantities. Based on the study of these QSL phases, we conclude that a complete classification of nodal QSLs with certain symmetry should include not only the projective symmetry groups but also the information of the cones, {\it i.e.}, their total number, their chiralities, and the way in which they are symmetry-related.

Topological Superconductivity in Doped Symmetry Protected Topological State

We propose an exotic scenario that topological superconductivity can emerge by doping strongly interacting fermionic systems whose spin degrees of freedom form bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) state. Specifically, we study a 1-dimensional (1D) example where the spin degrees of freedom form a spin-1 Haldane phase. {Before doping, the charge and spin degrees of freedom are both gapped.} Upon doping, {the charge channel becomes gapless and is described by a $c=1$ compactified bosonic conformal field theory (CFT), while the spin channel remains gapped and still form a bosonic SPT state. Interestingly,} an instability toward $p$-wave topological superconductivity is induced coexisting with the symmetry protected spin edge modes that are inherited from the Haldane phase. This scenario is confirmed by density-matrix renormalization group simulation of a concrete lattice model, where we find that topological superconductivity is robust against interactions. We further show that by stacking doped Haldane phases an exotic 2D anisotropic superconductor can be realized, {where the boundaries transverse to the {chain-}direction are either gapless or spontaneously symmetry-broken due to the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) anomaly.}

One Proximate Kitaev Spin Liquid in the $K$-$J$-$Γ$ Model on the Honeycomb Lattice

In addition to the Kitaev ($K$) interaction, candidate Kitaev materials also possess Heisenberg ($J$) and off-diagonal symmetric ($Γ$) couplings. We investigate the quantum ($S = 1/2$) $K$-$J$-$Γ$ model on the honeycomb lattice by a variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method. In addition to the "generic" Kitaev spin liquid (KSL), we find that there is just one proximate KSL (PKSL) phase, while the rest of the phase diagram contains different magnetically ordered states. The PKSL is a gapless Z$_2$ state with 14 Majorana cones, which in contrast to the KSL has a gapless spin response. In a magnetic field applied normal to the honeycomb plane, it realizes two of Kitaev's gapped chiral spin-liquid phases, of which one is non-Abelian with Chern number $ν= 5$ and the other is Abelian with $ν= 4$. These two phases could be distinguished by their thermal Hall conductance.

LnPd$_{2}$Sn (Ln=Sc, Y, Lu) class of Heusler alloys for topological superconductivity

Based on the first-principles electronic structure calculations and the symmetry analysis, we predict that the topological superconductivity may occur on the surface of the LnPd$_{2}$Sn (Ln=Sc, Y, Lu) class of Heusler alloys. The calculated electronic band structure and topological invariant demonstrate that the LnPd$_{2}$Sn family is topologically nontrivial. The further slab calculations show that the nontrivial topological surface states of LnPd$_{2}$Sn exist within the bulk band gap and meanwhile they cross the Fermi level. Considering that the LnPd$_{2}$Sn class of compounds were all found experimentally to be superconducting at low temperature, the surface topological superconductivity is likely to be generated via the proximity effect. Thus the LnPd$_{2}$Sn class of compounds shall be a promising platform for exploring novel topological superconductivity and handling Majorana zero modes.

Non-Abelian Chiral Spin Liquid on the Kagome Lattice

We study $S=1$ spin liquid states on the kagome lattice constructed by Gutzwiller-projected $p_x+ip_y$ superconductors. We show that the obtained spin liquids are either non-Abelian or Abelian topological phases, depending on the topology of the fermionic mean-field state. By calculating the modular matrices $S$ and $T$, we confirm that projected topological superconductors are non-Abelian chiral spin liquid (NACSL). The chiral central charge and the spin Hall conductance we obtained agree very well with the $SO(3)_1$ (or, equivalently, $SU(2)_2$) field theory predictions. We propose a local Hamiltonian which may stabilize the NACSL. From a variational study we observe a topological phase transition from the NACSL to the $Z_2$ Abelian spin liquid.

Dirac and Chiral Quantum Spin Liquids on the Honeycomb Lattice in a Magnetic Field

Motivated by recent experimental observations in $α$-RuCl$_3$, we study the $K$-$Γ$ model on the honeycomb lattice in an external magnetic field. By a slave-particle representation and Variational Monte Carlo calculations, we reproduce the phase transition from zigzag magnetic order to a field-induced disordered phase. The nature of this state depends crucially on the field orientation. For particular field directions in the honeycomb plane, we find a gapless Dirac spin liquid, in agreement with recent experiments on $α$-RuCl$_3$. For a range of out-of-plane fields, we predict the existence of a Kalmeyer-Laughlin-type chiral spin liquid, which would show an integer-quantized thermal Hall effect.

Irreducible Projective Representations and Their Physical Applications

An eigenfunction method is applied to reduce the regular projective representations (Reps) of finite groups to obtain their irreducible projective Reps. Anti-unitary groups are treated specially, where the decoupled factor systems and modified Schur's lemma are introduced. We discuss the applications of irreducible Reps in many-body physics. It is shown that in symmetry protected topological phases, geometric defects or symmetry defects may carry projective Rep of the symmetry group; while in symmetry enriched topological phases, intrinsic excitations (such as spinons or visons) may carry projective Rep of the symmetry group. We also discuss the applications of projective Reps in problems related to spectrum degeneracy, such as in search of models without sign problem in quantum Monte Carlo Simulations.
