A Rapid Integrated Tokamak Modelling Approach for Coupled Profile and Equilibrium Evolution

During plasma heating and current ramps the thermal and magnetic states of a tokamak evolve on different timescales. We present a rapid integrated tokamak modelling approach, which couples a variational fixed-boundary Grad--Shafranov equilibrium to sparse particle and energy flux matching and to weak-form current diffusion. An ITER-like pure-deuterium scenario is examined: a current ramp from 10 to 15~MA over 20~s, a 20~s flat-top and a 20~s ramp-down to 14~MA, under 80~MW of electron-cyclotron heating applied at the start. The toroidal current density at the pedestal top more than doubles during the ramp-up and then decreases during the flat-top as current redistributes inward. Thermal stored energy rises from 185.52 to 252.70~MJ and approaches its final value within the first few seconds. An independent calculation with the Fusion Synthesis Engine (FUSE) gives a stored-energy difference of 0.02\% at 60~s, whereas the largest profile differences occur in the core current density. Halving the coupling interval changes stored energy by at most 0.006\% at the selected radial resolution. The 60~s pulse, advanced through 600 coupling intervals of 0.1~s, takes 8.62~s on an Apple M4 Pro, which is at least two orders of magnitude faster than conventional integrated tokamak modelling solvers.

First reduced model for integrated computations of helicon wave heating and current drive in magnetic fusion plasmas

Fast predictive modelling of radio-frequency heating and current drive is important for integrated tokamak scenario design, yet kinetic calculations of helicon-wave absorption remain too computationally expensive for large-scale parameter scans. We present a reduced model for helicon-wave heating and current drive that retains the dominant parallel electron Landau-damping channel. The wave response is evaluated on the cold-plasma dispersion root, and a single-Landau-pole correction is introduced to obtain compact expressions for the local damping rate and current-drive efficiency. The model is benchmarked against the Chiu-Chan heating model using approximately 1.6 million samples covering representative conditions of EAST, HL-3, DIII-D and KSTAR. The reduction error is found to be governed primarily by the electron Landau parameter and electron beta. Within an identified sub-lower-hybrid-frequency validity window, results from different devices collapse onto a common error curve, which enables an empirical correction that is further tested using ITER-like and BEST-like extrapolation cases. Near and above the lower-hybrid frequency, the agreement deteriorates rapidly owing to changes in the cold-dispersion root structure and the breakdown of the single-branch WKB description. When coupled to a reduced current-drive source, the corrected heating model gives a median deviation of 10.8 percent from the Landau-channel Ehst-Karney reference and reproduces published CFETR current-density profiles. The resulting model provides a computationally efficient reduced closure for helicon-wave heating and current-drive calculations, together with physically interpretable limits on its range of validity.

Effect of resonance magnetic perturbation on edge-core turbulence spreading in a tokamak plasma

Turbulence spreading from edge to core region with resonance magnetic perturbation (RMP) is investigated using an electromagnetic Landau-fluid model in toroidal geometry. When RMP field with appropriate amplitude are employed in the simulation, long wavelength fluctuations around the resonance surface are excited due to the forced magnetic reconnection. Strong shear flow at the magnetic island separatrix are observed, and break the radial elongated vortex structures of the turbulent fluctuation. The inward flux could be blocked by this shear flow and the saturation level in the core region declines.

Effects of resonant magnetic perturbation on locked mode of neo-classical tearing modes

Effects of externally applied resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) on the locked mode of neo-classical tearing mode (NTM) are numerically investigated by means of a set of reduced magnetohydrodynamic equations. It is found that for a small bootstrap current fraction, three regimes, namely slight suppression regime, small locked island (SLI) regime and big locked island (BLI) regime, are discovered with the increase of RMP strength. For a much higher bootstrap current fraction, however, a new oscillation regime appears instead of the SLI regime, although the other regimes still remain. The physical process in each regime is analyzed in detail based on the phase difference between NTM and RMP. Moreover, the critical values of RMP in both SLI and BLI regimes are obtained, and their dependence on key plasma parameters is discussed as well.
