Oversampled Low Ambiguity Zone Sequences for Channel Estimation over Doubly Selective Channels

Pilot sequence design over doubly selective channels (DSC) is challenging due to the variations in both the time- and frequency-domains. Against this background, the contribution of this paper is twofold: Firstly, we investigate the optimal sequence design criteria for efficient channel estimation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems under DSC. Secondly, to design pilot sequences that can satisfy the derived criteria, we propose a new metric called oversampled ambiguity function (O-AF), which considers both fractional and integer Doppler frequency shifts. Optimizing the sidelobes of O-AF through a modified iterative twisted approximation (ITROX) algorithm, we develop a new class of pilot sequences called ``oversampled low ambiguity zone (O-LAZ) sequences". Through numerical experiments, we evaluate the efficiency of the proposed O-LAZ sequences over the traditional low ambiguity zone (LAZ) sequences, Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequences and m-sequences, by comparing their channel estimation performances over DSC.

Robust, Secure and Private Cache-aided Scalar Linear Function Retrieval from Distributed System with Blind and Adversarial Servers

In this work, a distributed server system composed of multiple servers that holds some coded files and multiple users that are interested in retrieving the linear functions of the files is investigated, where the servers are robust, blind and adversarial in the sense that any $J$ servers can together recover all files, while any $I$ colluding servers cannot obtain any information about the files, and at most $A$ servers maliciously provides erroneous information. In addition, the file library must be secure from a wiretapper who obtains all the signals, and the demands of any subset of users must kept private from the other users and servers, even if they collude. A coding scheme is proposed by incorporating the ideas of Shamir's secret sharing and key superposition into the framework of Placement Delivery Array (PDA), originally proposed to characterize the single-server coded caching system without any security or privacy constraints. It is shown that PDAs associated to Maddah-Ali and Niesen's coded caching scheme results in an achievable memory-storage-communication region, such that the storage size and communication load were optimal to within a multiplicative gap, except for the small memory regime when the number of files was smaller than the number of users.

Enhanced Low-Redundancy Restricted Array for Direction of Arrival Estimation

Sensor arrays play a significant role in direction of arrival (DOA) estimation. Specifically, arrays with low redundancy and reduced mutual coupling are desirable. In this paper, we investigate a sensor array configuration that has a restricted sensor spacing and propose a closed-form expression. We also propose several classes of low redundancy (LR) arrays. Interestingly, compared with super nested arrays (SNA) and maximum inter-element spacing constraint (MISC) arrays, one of the proposed arrays has a significant reduction in both redundancy ratio and mutual coupling. Numerical simulations are also conducted to verify the superiority of the proposed array over the known sparse arrays in terms of weight functions, mutual coupling matrices as well and DOA estimation performance.

Content-Aware Quantization Index Modulation:Leveraging Data Statistics for Enhanced Image Watermarking

Image watermarking techniques have continuously evolved to address new challenges and incorporate advanced features. The advent of data-driven approaches has enabled the processing and analysis of large volumes of data, extracting valuable insights and patterns. In this paper, we propose two content-aware quantization index modulation (QIM) algorithms: Content-Aware QIM (CA-QIM) and Content-Aware Minimum Distortion QIM (CAMD-QIM). These algorithms aim to improve the embedding distortion of QIM-based watermarking schemes by considering the statistics of the cover signal vectors and messages. CA-QIM introduces a canonical labeling approach, where the closest coset to each cover vector is determined during the embedding process. An adjacency matrix is constructed to capture the relationships between the cover vectors and messages. CAMD-QIM extends the concept of minimum distortion (MD) principle to content-aware QIM. Instead of quantizing the carriers to lattice points, CAMD-QIM quantizes them to close points in the correct decoding region. Canonical labeling is also employed in CAMD-QIM to enhance its performance. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of CA-QIM and CAMD-QIM in reducing embedding distortion compared to traditional QIM. The combination of canonical labeling and the minimum distortion principle proves to be powerful, minimizing the need for changes to most cover vectors/carriers. These content-aware QIM algorithms provide improved performance and robustness for watermarking applications.

New sets of Non-Orthogonal Spreading Sequences With Low Correlation and Low PAPR Using Extended Boolean Functions

Extended Boolean functions (EBFs) are one of the most important tools in cryptography and spreading sequence design in communication systems. In this paper, we use EBFs to design new sets of spreading sequences for non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), which is an emerging technique capable of supporting massive machine-type communications (mMTC) in 5G and beyond. In this work, first $p$-ary complementary sequences are constructed using EBFs and then, these sequences are used to design new sets of non-orthogonal spreading sequence sets having very low coherence and peak to average power ratio (PAPR). The proposed spreading sequence sets are capable of supporting a large number of active devices simultaneously. In fact, for a $p$-ary spreading sequence set, we theoretically achieve an overloading factor of $2p$, where $p$ is an odd prime. Specifically, for $p=3$, we achieve an overloading factor of $6$, which cannot be achieved through the existing constructions till date.

Data-driven Knowledge Fusion for Deep Multi-instance Learning

Multi-instance learning (MIL) is a widely-applied technique in practical applications that involve complex data structures. MIL can be broadly categorized into two types: traditional methods and those based on deep learning. These approaches have yielded significant results, especially with regards to their problem-solving strategies and experimental validation, providing valuable insights for researchers in the MIL field. However, a considerable amount of knowledge is often trapped within the algorithm, leading to subsequent MIL algorithms that solely rely on the model's data fitting to predict unlabeled samples. This results in a significant loss of knowledge and impedes the development of more intelligent models. In this paper, we propose a novel data-driven knowledge fusion for deep multi-instance learning (DKMIL) algorithm. DKMIL adopts a completely different idea from existing deep MIL methods by analyzing the decision-making of key samples in the data set (referred to as the data-driven) and using the knowledge fusion module designed to extract valuable information from these samples to assist the model's training. In other words, this module serves as a new interface between data and the model, providing strong scalability and enabling the use of prior knowledge from existing algorithms to enhance the learning ability of the model. Furthermore, to adapt the downstream modules of the model to more knowledge-enriched features extracted from the data-driven knowledge fusion module, we propose a two-level attention module that gradually learns shallow- and deep-level features of the samples to achieve more effective classification. We will prove the scalability of the knowledge fusion module while also verifying the efficacy of the proposed architecture by conducting experiments on 38 data sets across 6 categories.

Interpreting Vulnerabilities of Multi-Instance Learning to Adversarial Perturbations

Multi-Instance Learning (MIL) is a recent machine learning paradigm which is immensely useful in various real-life applications, like image analysis, video anomaly detection, text classification, etc. It is well known that most of the existing machine learning classifiers are highly vulnerable to adversarial perturbations. Since MIL is a weakly supervised learning, where information is available for a set of instances, called bag and not for every instances, adversarial perturbations can be fatal. In this paper, we have proposed two adversarial perturbation methods to analyze the effect of adversarial perturbations to interpret the vulnerability of MIL methods. Out of the two algorithms, one can be customized for every bag, and the other is a universal one, which can affect all bags in a given data set and thus has some generalizability. Through simulations, we have also shown the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms to fool the state-of-the-art (SOTA) MIL methods. Finally, we have discussed through experiments, about taking care of these kind of adversarial perturbations through a simple strategy. New Spectrally Constrained Sequence Sets with Optimal {Periodic} Cross-Correlation

Spectrally constrained sequences (SCSs) play an important role in modern communication and radar systems operating over non-contiguous spectrum. Despite numerous research attempts over the past years, very few works are known on the constructions of optimal SCSs with low cross-correlations. In this paper, we address such a major problem by introducing a unifying framework to construct unimodular SCS families using circular Florentine rectangles (CFRs) and interleaving techniques. By leveraging the uniform power allocation in the frequency domain for all the admissible carriers (a necessary condition for beating the existing periodic correlation lower bound of SCSs), we present a tighter correlation lower bound and show that it is achievable by our proposed SCS families including multiple SCS sets with zero correlation zone properties.

A class of twisted generalized Reed-Solomon codes

Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of size $q$ and $\mathbb{F}_q^*$ the set of non-zero elements of $\mathbb{F}_q$. In this paper, we study a class of twisted generalized Reed-Solomon code $C_\ell(D, k, η, \vec{v})\subset \mathbb{F}_q^n$ generated by the following matrix \[ \left(\begin{array}{cccc} v_{1} & v_{2} & \cdots & v_{n} \\ v_{1} α_{1} & v_{2} α_{2} & \cdots & v_{n} α_{n} \\ \vdots & \vdots & \ddots & \vdots \\ v_{1} α_{1}^{\ell-1} & v_{2} α_{2}^{\ell-1} & \cdots & v_{n} α_{n}^{\ell-1} \\ v_{1} α_{1}^{\ell+1} & v_{2} α_{2}^{\ell+1} & \cdots & v_{n} α_{n}^{\ell+1} \\ \vdots & \vdots & \ddots & \vdots \\ v_{1} α_{1}^{k-1} & v_{2} α_{2}^{k-1} & \cdots & v_{n} α_{n}^{k-1} \\ v_{1}\left(α_{1}^{\ell}+ηα_{1}^{q-{2}}\right) & v_{2}\left(α_{2}^{\ell}+ ηα_{2}^{q-2}\right) &\cdots & v_{n}\left(α_{n}^{\ell}+ηα_{n}^{q-2}\right) \end{array}\right) \] where $0\leq \ell\leq k-1,$ the evaluation set $D=\{α_{1},α_{2},\cdots, α_{n}\}\subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^*$, scaling vector $\vec{v}=(v_1,v_2,\cdots,v_n)\in (\mathbb{F}_q^*)^n$ and $η\in\mathbb{F}_q^*$. The minimum distance and dual code of $C_\ell(D, k, η, \vec{v})$ will be determined. For the special case $\ell=k-1,$ a sufficient and necessary condition for $C_{k-1}(D, k, η, \vec{v})$ to be self-dual will be given. We will also show that the code is MDS or near-MDS. Moreover, a complete classification when the code is near-MDS or MDS will be presented.

Symmetrical Z-Complementary Code Sets (SZCCSs) for Optimal Training in Generalized Spatial Modulation

This paper introduces a novel class of code sets, called "symmetrical Z-complementary code sets (SZCCSs)" , whose aperiodic auto- and cross- correlation sums exhibit zero-correlation zones (ZCZs) at both the front-end and tail-end of the entire correlation window. Three constructions of (optimal) SZCCSs based on general Boolean functions are presented. As a second major contribution, we apply SZCCSs to design optimal training sequences for broadband generalized spatial modulation (GSM) systems over frequency-selective channels. Key words: Complementary code set, channel estimation, training sequence design, generalized spatial modulation, frequency-selective channels.

Optimal quaternary $(r,δ)$-Locally Recoverable Codes: Their Structures and Complete Classification

Aiming to recover the data from several concurrent node failures, linear $r$-LRC codes with locality $r$ were extended into $(r, δ)$-LRC codes with locality $(r, δ)$ which can enable the local recovery of a failed node in case of more than one node failure. Optimal LRC codes are those whose parameters achieve the generalized Singleton bound with equality. In the present paper, we are interested in studying optimal LRC codes over small fields and, more precisely, over $\mathbb{F}_4$. We shall adopt an approach by investigating optimal quaternary $(r,δ)$-LRC codes through their parity-check matrices. Our study includes determining the structural properties of optimal $(r,δ)$-LRC codes, their constructions, and their complete classification over $\F_4$ by browsing all possible parameters. We emphasize that the precise structure of optimal quaternary $(r,δ)$-LRC codes and their classification are obtained via the parity-check matrix approach use proofs-techniques different from those used recently for optimal binary and ternary $(r,δ)$-LRC codes obtained by Hao et al. in [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 2020, 66(12): 7465-7474].

Low Ambiguity Zone: Theoretical Bounds and Doppler-Resilient Sequence Design in Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

In radar sensing and communications, designing Doppler resilient sequences (DRSs) with low ambiguity function for delay over the entire signal duration and Doppler shift over the entire signal bandwidth is an extremely difficult task. However, in practice, the Doppler frequency range is normally much smaller than the bandwidth of the transmitted signal, and it is relatively easy to attain quasi-synchronization for delays far less than the entire signal duration. Motivated by this observation, we propose a new concept called low ambiguity zone (LAZ) which is a small area of the corresponding ambiguity function of interest defined by the certain Doppler frequency and delay. Such an LAZ will reduce to a zero ambiguity zone (ZAZ) if the maximum ambiguity values of interest are zero. In this paper, we derive a set of theoretical bounds on periodic LAZ/ZAZ of unimodular DRSs with and without spectral constraints, which include the existing bounds on periodic global ambiguity function as special cases. These bounds may be used as theoretical design guidelines to measure the optimality of sequences against Doppler effect. We then introduce four optimal constructions of DRSs with respect to the derived ambiguity lower bounds based on some algebraic tools such as characters over finite field and cyclic difference sets.

Asymptotically Optimal Golay-ZCZ Sequence Sets with Flexible Length

Zero correlation zone (ZCZ) sequences and Golay complementary sequences are two kinds of sequences with different preferable correlation properties. Golay-ZCZ sequences are special kinds of complementary sequences which also possess a large ZCZ and are good candidates for pilots in OFDM systems. Known Golay-ZCZ sequences reported in the literature have a limitation in the length which is the form of a power of 2. In this paper, we propose two constructions of Golay-ZCZ sequence sets with new parameters which generalize the constructions of Gong et al. (IEEE Transaction on Communications 61(9), 2013) and Chen et al (IEEE Transaction on Communications 61(9), 2018). Notably, one of the constructions results in optimal binary Golay-ZCZ sequences, while the other results in asymptotically optimal polyphase Golay-ZCZ sequences as the number of sequences increases.

New Constructions of Golay Complementary Pair/Array with Large Zero Correlation Zone

Zero correlation zone (ZCZ) sequences and Golay sequences are two kinds of sequences with different preferable correlation properties. It was shown by Gong \textit{et al.} and Chen \textit{et al.} that some Golay sequences also possess a large ZCZ and are good candidates for pilots in OFDM systems. Known Golay sequences with ZCZ reported in the literature have a limitation in the length which is the form of a power of 2. One objective of this paper is to propose a construction of Golay complementary pairs (GCPs) with new lengths whose periodic autocorrelation of each of the Golay sequences and periodic corss-correlation of the pair displays a zero correlation zone (ZCZ) around the in-phase position. Specifically, the proposed GCPs have length $4N$ (where, $N$ is the length of a GCP) and ZCZ width $N+1$. Another objective of this paper is to extend the construction to two-dimensional Golay complementary array pairs (GCAPs). Interestingly the periodic corss-correlation of the proposed GACPs also have large ZCZs around the in-phase position.

A Generalised Construction of Multiple Complete Complementary Codes and Asymptotically Optimal Aperiodic Quasi-Complementary Sequence Sets

In recent years, complementary sequence sets have found many important applications in multi-carrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) systems for their good correlation properties. In this paper, we propose a construction, which can generate multiple sets of complete complementary codes (CCCs) over $\mathbb{Z}_N$, where $N~(N\geq 3)$ is a positive integer of the form $N=p_0^{e^0}p_1^{e^1}\dots p_{n-1}^{e^{n-1}}$, $p_0<p_1<\cdots<p_{n-1}$ are prime factors of $N$ and $e_0,e_1,\cdots,e_{n-1}$ are non-negative integers. Interestingly, the maximum inter-set aperiodic cross-correlation magnitude of the proposed CCCs is upper bounded by $N$. When $N$ is odd, the combination of the proposed CCCs results to a new set of sequences to obtain asymptotically optimal and near-optimal aperiodic quasi-complementary sequence sets (QCSSs) with more flexible parameters.

New Constructions of Cross Z-Complementary Pairs

Spatial modulation (SM) is a new paradigm of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, in which only one antenna at the transmitter is activated during each symbol period. Recently, it is observed that SM training sequences derived from corss Z-complementary pairs (CZCPs) lead to optimal channel estimation performance over frequency-selective channels. CZCPs are special form of sequence pairs which have zero aperiodic autocorrelation zones and cross-correlation zone at certain time-shifts. Recent paper by Liu \textit{et al.} discussed only perfect CZCPs. In this paper, we focus on non-perfect CZCPs. We introduce the term cross Z-complementary ratio and re-categorise the CZCPs, both perfect and non-perfect, based on that. We propose a systematic construction of CZCPs based on generalised Boolean functions (GBFs). We further extend the lengths of the CZCPs by using the insertion method. The proposed CZCPs are all of new lengths of the form $2^\alpha10^\beta26^γ+2~(α\geq1)$, $10^β+2$, $26^γ+2$ and $10^β26^γ+2$. Finally we propose a construction of optimal binary CZCPs having parameters $(12,5)$ and $(24,11)$ from binary Barker sequences. These CZCPs are also extended to $(12N,5N)$- CZCPs and $(24N,11N)$- CZCPs, where $N$ is the length of a binary Golay complementary pair (GCP). During the proof, we also found a new structural property of binary CZCPs and concluded all binary GCPs are CZCPs too. Finally, we give some numerical simulations to confirm that depending on the number of multi-paths, the proposed CZCPs can be used to design SM training matrix which attains the minimum mean square error.

New Construction of Z-Complementary Code Sets and Mutually Orthogonal Complementary Sequence Sets

Due to the zero nontrivial aperiodic correlation of complete complementary code (CCCs), it is used in asynchronous multi carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) communication to provide zero interference performance. However, there is no CCC for some lengths. In this case, if the system pays more attention to the correlation, it can use mutually orthogonal complementary sequence sets (MOCSSs), and if the system pays more attention to the set size, it can use Z-complementary code sets (ZCCSs). In this paper, we propose a direct construction of $q$-ary $(q^{v+1},q,q^m,q^{m-v})$-ZCCS. In addition, based on the known CCCs, we propose a new construction of MOCSSs and CCCs respectively.

Investigations on $c$-(almost) perfect nonlinear functions

In a prior paper \cite{EFRST20}, two of us, along with P. Ellingsen, P. Felke and A. Tkachenko, 1defined a new (output) multiplicative differential, and the corresponding $c$-differential uniformity, which has the potential of extending differential cryptanalysis. Here, we continue the work, by looking at some APN functions through the mentioned concept and showing that their $c$-differential uniformity increases significantly, in some cases.
