Nonlinear polarization effects on plasma screening for thermonuclear reactions

We investigate two-center plasma screening effects on thermonuclear reactions of D-T, p-$^{11}$B, and $^{12}$C-$^{12}$C, spanning from classical to degenerate regimes. The two-center screening potential is obtained within a finite-temperature Thomas-Fermi-Dirac framework, capturing two-ion correlations as the leading-order many-body effect. Combining the resulting screened Coulomb potential with a complex Woods-Saxon nuclear potential, we solve the stationary Schr\"{o}dinger equation to obtain the fusion tunneling probabilities and the corresponding reaction rates. Compared to Debye-H\"{u}ckel results, the present screening potential is stronger in weakly coupled and weakly degenerate regimes but weaker in strongly coupled and strongly degenerate regimes. Consequently, the fusion enhancement factors are amplified in the former but suppressed in the latter. An underlying interplay between two mechanisms is identified: the nonlinear polarization of ions tends to reduce the screening effect, whereas the nonlinear polarization of electrons tends to enhance it. This subtle competition is governed by the plasma coupling strength and degeneracy. These findings highlight that a two-center treatment is important for predicting fusion rates in dense plasmas.

Multiphoton fusion of light nuclei in intense laser fields

We investigate the fusion cross sections of light nuclei in the presence of linearly polarized intense laser fields. By combining the Coulomb-Volkov solutions with the complex spherical square-well nuclear potential, we derive an explicit formulation of the multiphoton cross section in a self-consistent manner. Our analysis is specifically focused on deuteron-triton (DT) and proton-boron (p$^{11}{\rm B}$) fusion reactions, both of which have garnered widespread attention. The theoretical results reveal that, under conditions of longer laser wavelengths and lower incident particle kinetic energies, a few thousands of photons can participate in the fusion reactions, resulting in a substantial enhancement of fusion cross sections by almost ten orders of magnitude. We elucidate the multiphoton mechanism underlying these findings and discuss their implications.

Hybrid-drive pressure suppressing implosion instabilities and offering nonstagnation hotspot ignition with low convergence ratio for high-gain inertial fusion

In laser-drive ICF, hybrid drive (HD) combined direct drive (DD) and indirect drive (ID) offers a smoothed HD pressure $P_{HD}$, far higher than the ablation pressure in ID and DD, to suppress hydrodynamic instabilities. In this letter, simulations of a new robust HD ignition target show that maximal HD pressure as high as $P_{HD} \sim$ 650 Mbar driven by a novel "bulldozer" effect is achieved, resulting in nonstagnation hotspot ignition at the convergence ratio $C_r \sim $23, and finally, fusion energy gain $\sim$ 10 in total laser energy = 1.42 MJ. Two-dimensional simulations have confirmed that hydrodynamic instabilities are suppressed. A well-fitted scale of maximal HD pressure $P_{HD}$ (Mbar)= $BE_{DD}^{1/4} T_r$ is found from simulations of different targets and laser energies as long as $T_r> 160$ eV, where B is the constant depending on ablator materials, $E_{DD}$ in kJ is DD laser energy and $T_r$ in 100 eV is radiation temperature depending on ID laser energy $E_{ID}$. $P_{HD}\geq$ 450 Mbar is requested for hotspot ignition. This scale from "bulldozer" effect is also available as $E_{DD}$ is reduced to kJ. Experiments have verified $P_{HD}$ about 3.5 times radiation ablation pressure for CH ablator using $E_{ID}=43$ kJ ($T_r \simeq$200 eV) and $E_{DD}$=3.6 kJ, also shown that both backscattering fraction and hot-electron energy fraction for DD laser intensity $\sim 1.8 \times 10^{15} {\rm w\cdot cm^{-2}}$ are about a third of the traditional DD laser-plasma interaction

A new ignition scheme using hybrid indirect-direct drive for inertial confinement fusion

A new hybrid indirect-direct-drive ignition scheme is proposed for inertial confinement fusion: a cryogenic capsule encased in a hohlraum is first compressed symmetrically by indirect-drive x-rays, and then accelerated and ignited by both direct-drive lasers and x-rays. A steady high-density plateau newly formed between the radiation and electron ablation fronts suppresses the rarefaction at the radiation ablation front and greatly enhances the drive pressure. Meanwhile, multiple shock reflections at the fuel/hot-spot interface are prevented during capsule deceleration. Thus rapid ignition and burn are realized. In comparison with the conventional indirect drive, the hybrid drive implodes the capsule with a higher velocity ($\sim4.3\times10^7$ cm/s) and a much lower convergence ratio ($\sim$25), and the growth of hydrodynamic instabilities is significantly reduced, especially at the fuel/hot-spot interface.
