iEDA: An Open-Source Intelligent Physical Implementation Toolkit and Library

Open-source EDA shows promising potential in unleashing EDA innovation and lowering the cost of chip design. This paper presents an open-source EDA project, iEDA, aiming for building a basic infrastructure for EDA technology evolution and closing the industrial-academic gap in the EDA area. iEDA now covers the whole flow of physical design (including Floorplan, Placement, CTS, Routing, Timing Optimization etc.), and part of the analysis tools (Static Timing Analysis and Power Analysis). To demonstrate the effectiveness of iEDA, we implement and tape out three chips of different scales (from 700k to 1.5M gates) on different process nodes (110nm and 28nm) with iEDA. iEDA is publicly available from the project home page http://ieda.oscc.cc.

Spectral Efficiency of Unicast and Multigroup Multicast Transmission in Cell-free Distributed Massive MIMO Systems

In this paper, we consider a joint unicast and multi-group multicast cell-free distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, while accounting for co-pilot assignment strategy based channel estimation, pilot contamination and different precoding schemes. Under the co-pilot assignment strategy, we derive the minimum-mean-square error (MMSE) channel state information (CSI) estimation for unicast and multicast users. Given the acquired CSI, the closed-form expressions for downlink achievable rates with maximum ratio transmission (MRT), zero-forcing (ZF) and MMSE beamforming are derived. Based on these expressions, we propose an efficient power allocation scheme by solving a multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP) between maximizing the minimum spectral efficiency (SE) of multicast users and maximizing the average SE of unicast users with non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). Moreover, the MOOP is converted into a deep learning (DL) problem and solved by an unsupervised learning method to further promote computational efficiency. Numerical results verify the accuracy of the derived closed-form expressions and the effectiveness of the joint unicast and multigroup multicast transmission scheme in cell-free distributed massive MIMO systems. The SE analysis under various system parameters and the trade-off regions between these two conflicting optimization objectives offers numerous flexibilities for system optimization.

Quantum and Classical Query Complexities for Generalized Simon's Problem

Simon's problem is an essential example demonstrating the faster speed of quantum computers than classical computers for solving some problems. The optimal separation between exact quantum and classical query complexities for Simon's problem has been proved by Cai $\&$ Qiu. Generalized Simon's problem can be described as follows. Given a function $f:{\{0, 1\}}^n \to {\{0, 1\}}^m$, with the property that there is some unknown hidden subgroup $S$ such that $f(x)=f(y)$ iff $x \oplus y\in S$, for any $x, y\in {\{0, 1\}}^n$, where $|S|=2^k$ for some $0\leq k\leq n$. The goal is to find $S$. For the case of $k=1$, it is Simon's problem. In this paper, we propose an exact quantum algorithm with $O(n-k)$ queries and an non-adaptive deterministic classical algorithm with $O(k\sqrt{2^{n-k}})$ queries for solving the generalized Simon's problem. Also, we prove that their lower bounds are $Ω(n-k)$ and $Ω(\sqrt{k2^{n-k}})$, respectively. Therefore, we obtain a tight exact quantum query complexity $Θ(n-k)$ and an almost tight non-adaptive classical deterministic query complexities $Ω(\sqrt{k2^{n-k}}) \sim O(k\sqrt{2^{n-k}})$ for this problem.

A Warm Restart Strategy for Solving Sudoku by Sparse Optimization Methods

This paper is concerned with the popular Sudoku problem. We proposed a warm restart strategy for solving Sudoku puzzles, based on the sparse optimization technique. Furthermore, we defined a new difficulty level for Sudoku puzzles. The efficiency of the proposed method is tested using a dataset of Sudoku puzzles, and the numerical results show that the accurate recovery rate can be enhanced from 84%+ to 99%+ using the L1 sparse optimization method.

Exceptional damage-tolerance of a medium-entropy alloy CrCoNi at cryogenic temperatures

High-entropy alloys are an intriguing new class of metallic materials that derive their properties from being multi-element systems that can crystallize as a single phase, despite containing high concentrations of five or more elements with different crystal structures. Here we examine an equiatomic medium-entropy alloy containing only three elements, CrCoNi, as a single-phase face-centered cubic (fcc) solid solution, which displays strength-toughness properties that exceed those of all high-entropy alloys and most multi-phase alloys. At room temperature the alloy shows tensile strengths of almost 1 GPa, failure strains of ~70%, and KJIc fracture-toughness values above 200 MPa.m1/2; at cryogenic temperatures strength, ductility and toughness of the CrCoNi alloy improve to strength levels above 1.3 GPa, failure strains up to 90% and KJIc values of 275 MPa.m1/2. Such properties appear to result from continuous steady strain hardening, which acts to suppress plastic instability, resulting from pronounced dislocation activity and deformation-induced nano-twinning.
