Fermionic Modular Categories and the 16-fold Way

We study spin and super-modular categories systematically as inspired by fermionic topological phases of matter, which are always fermion parity enriched and modelled by spin TQFTs at low energy. We formulate a $16$-fold way conjecture for the minimal modular extensions of super-modular categories to spin modular categories, which is a categorical formulation of gauging the fermion parity. We investigate general properties of super-modular categories such as fermions in twisted Drinfeld doubles, Verlinde formulas for naive quotients, and explicit extensions of $PSU(2)_{4m+2}$ with an eye towards a classification of the low-rank cases.

Hamiltonian models for topological phases of matter in three spatial dimensions

We present commuting projector Hamiltonian realizations of a large class of (3+1)D topological models based on mathematical objects called unitary G-crossed braided fusion categories. This construction comes with a wealth of examples from the literature of symmetry-enriched topological phases. The spacetime counterparts to our Hamiltonians are unitary state sum topological quantum fields theories (TQFTs) that appear to capture all known constructions in the literature, including the Crane-Yetter-Walker-Wang and 2-Group gauge theory models. We also present Hamiltonian realizations of a state sum TQFT recently constructed by Kashaev whose relation to existing models was previously unknown. We argue that this TQFT is captured as a special case of the Crane-Yetter-Walker-Wang model, with a premodular input category in some instances.

Congruence subgroups from representations of the three-strand braid group

Ng and Schauenburg proved that the kernel of a $(2+1)$-dimensional topological quantum field theory representation of $\mathrm{SL}(2, \mathbb{Z})$ is a congruence subgroup. Motivated by their result, we explore when the kernel of an irreducible representation of the braid group $B_3$ with finite image enjoys a congruence subgroup property. In particular, we show that in dimensions two and three, when the projective order of the image of the braid generator $σ_1$ is between 2 and 5 the kernel projects onto a congruence subgroup of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ and compute its level. However, we prove for three dimensional representations, the projective order is not enough to decide the congruence property. For each integer of the form $2\ell \geq 6$ with $\ell$ odd, we construct a pair of non-congruence subgroups associated with three-dimensional representations having finite image and $σ_1$ mapping to a matrix with projective order $2\ell$. Our technique uses classification results of low dimensional braid group representations, and the Fricke-Wohlfarht theorem in number theory.

Topological Quantum Computation with Gapped Boundaries

This paper studies fault-tolerant quantum computation with gapped boundaries. We first introduce gapped boundaries of Kitaev's quantum double models for Dijkgraaf-Witten theories using their Hamiltonian realizations. We classify the elementary excitations on the boundary, and systematically describe the bulk-to-boundary condensation procedure. We also provide a commuting Hamiltonian to realize defects between boundaries in any quantum double model. Next, we present the algebraic/categorical structure of gapped boundaries and boundary defects, which will be used to describe topologically protected operations and obtain quantum gates. To demonstrate a potential physical realization, we provide quantum circuits for surface codes that can perform all basic operations on gapped boundaries. Finally, we show how gapped boundaries of the abelian theory $\mathfrak{D}(\mathbb{Z}_3)$ can be used to perform universal quantum computation.

Efficient Topological Compilation for Weakly-Integral Anyon Model

A class of anyonic models for universal quantum computation based on weakly-integral anyons has been recently proposed. While universal set of gates cannot be obtained in this context by anyon braiding alone, designing a certain type of sector charge measurement provides universality. In this paper we develop a compilation algorithm to approximate arbitrary $n$-qutrit unitaries with asymptotically efficient circuits over the metaplectic anyon model. One flavor of our algorithm produces efficient circuits with upper complexity bound asymptotically in $O(3^{2\,n} \, \log{1/\varepsilon})$ and entanglement cost that is exponential in $n$. Another flavor of the algorithm produces efficient circuits with upper complexity bound in $O(n\,3^{2\,n} \, \log{1/\varepsilon})$ and no additional entanglement cost.

Local unitary representations of the braid group and their applications to quantum computing

We provide an elementary introduction to topological quantum computation based on the Jones representation of the braid group. We first cover the Burau representation and Alexander polynomial. Then we discuss the Jones representation and Jones polynomial and their application to anyonic quantum computation. Finally we outline the approximation of the Jones polynomial and explicit localizations of braid group representations.

On classification of modular categories by rank

The feasibility of a classification-by-rank program for modular categories follows from the Rank-Finiteness Theorem. We develop arithmetic, representation theoretic and algebraic methods for classifying modular categories by rank. As an application, we determine all possible fusion rules for all rank=$5$ modular categories and describe the corresponding monoidal equivalence classes.

On Gauging Symmetry of Modular Categories

Topological order of a topological phase of matter in two spacial dimensions is encoded by a unitary modular (tensor) category (UMC). A group symmetry of the topological phase induces a group symmetry of its corresponding UMC. Gauging is a well-known theoretical tool to promote a global symmetry to a local gauge symmetry. We give a mathematical formulation of gauging in terms of higher category formalism. Roughly, given a UMC with a symmetry group $G$, gauging is a 2-step process: first extend the UMC to a $G$-crossed braided fusion category and then take the equivariantization of the resulting category. Gauging can tell whether or not two enriched topological phases of matter are different, and also provides a way to construct new UMCs out of old ones. We derive a formula for the $H^4$-obstruction, prove some properties of gauging, and carry out gauging for two concrete examples.

Degeneracy Implies Non-abelian Statistics

A non-abelian anyon can only occur in the presence of ground state degeneracy in the plane. It is conceivable that for some strange anyon with quantum dimension $>1$ that the resulting representations of all $n$-strand braid groups $B_n$ are overall phases, even though the ground state manifolds for $n$ such anyons in the plane are in general Hilbert spaces of dimensions $>1$. We observe that degeneracy is all that is needed: for an anyon with quantum dimension $>1$ the non-abelian statistics cannot all be overall phases on the degeneracy ground state manifold. Therefore, degeneracy implies non-abelian statistics, which justifies defining a non-abelian anyon as one with quantum dimension $>1$. Since non-abelian statistics presumes degeneracy, degeneracy is more fundamental than non-abelian statistics.

Classification of Metaplectic Modular Categories

We obtain a classification of metaplectic modular categories: every metaplectic modular category is a gauging of the particle-hole symmetry of a cyclic modular category. Our classification suggests a conjecture that every weakly-integral modular category can be obtained by gauging a symmetry of a pointed modular category.

Abelian and Non-Abelian States in $ν=2/3$ Bilayer Fractional Quantum Hall Systems

There are several possible theoretically allowed non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states that could potentially be realized in one- and two- component FQH systems at total filling fraction $ν= n+ 2/3$, for integer $n$. Some of these states even possess quasiparticles with non-Abelian statistics that are powerful enough for universal topological quantum computation, and are thus of particular interest. Here, we initiate a systematic numerical study, using both exact diagonalization and variational Monte Carlo, to investigate the phase diagram of FQH systems at total filling fraction $ν= n+2/3$, including in particular the possibility of the non-Abelian $Z_4$ parafermion state. In $ν= 2/3$ bilayers, we determine the phase diagram as a function of interlayer tunneling and repulsion, finding only three competing Abelian states, without the $Z_4$ state. On the other hand, in single-component systems at $ν= 8/3$, we find that the $Z_4$ parafermion state has significantly higher overlap with the exact ground state than the Laughlin state, together with a larger gap, suggesting that the experimentally observed $ν= 8/3$ state may be non-Abelian. Our results from the two complementary numerical techniques agree well with each other qualitatively.

Universal Gates via Fusion and Measurement Operations on SU$(2)_4$ Anyons

We examine a class of operations for topological quantum computation based on fusing and measuring topological charges for systems with SU$(2)_4$ or $k=4$ Jones-Kauffman anyons. We show that such operations augment the braiding operations, which, by themselves, are not computationally universal. This augmentation results in a computationally universal gate set through the generation of an exact, topologically protected irrational phase gate and an approximate, topologically protected controlled-$Z$ gate.

Rank-finiteness for modular categories

We prove a rank-finiteness conjecture for modular categories: up to equivalence, there are only finitely many modular categories of any fixed rank. Our technical advance is a generalization of the Cauchy theorem in group theory to the context of spherical fusion categories. For a modular category $\mathcal{C}$ with $N=ord(T)$, the order of the modular $T$-matrix, the Cauchy theorem says that the set of primes dividing the global quantum dimension $D^2$ in the Dedekind domain $\mathbb{Z}[e^{\frac{2πi}{N}}]$ is identical to that of $N$.

On the Classification of Weakly Integral Modular Categories

We classify all modular categories of dimension $4m$, where $m$ is an odd square-free integer, and all ranks $6$ and $7$ weakly integral modular categories. This completes the classification of weakly integral modular categories through rank $7$. Our results imply that all integral modular categories of rank at most $7$ are pointed (that is, every simple object has dimension $1$). All strictly weakly integral (weakly integral but non-integral) modular categories of ranks $6$ and $7$ have dimension $4m$, with $m$ an odd square free integer, so their classification is an application of our main result. The classification of rank $7$ integral modular categories is facilitated by an analysis of two actions on modular categories: the Galois group of the field generated by the entries of the $S$-matrix and the group of isomorphism classes of invertible simple objects. The interplay of these two actions is of independent interest, and we derive some valuable arithmetic consequences from their actions.

Universal Quantum Computation with Metaplectic Anyons

We show that braidings of the metaplectic anyons $X_ε$ in $SO(3)_2=SU(2)_4$ with their total charge equal to the metaplectic mode $Y$ supplemented with measurements of the total charge of two metaplectic anyons are universal for quantum computation. We conjecture that similar universal computing models can be constructed for all metaplectic anyon systems $SO(p)_2$ for any odd prime $p\geq 5$. In order to prove universality, we find new conceptually appealing universal gate sets for qutrits and qupits.

A classification of 2D fermionic and bosonic topological orders

The string-net approach by Levin and Wen, and the local unitary transformation approach by Chen, Gu, and Wen, provide ways to classify topological orders with gappable edge in 2D bosonic systems. The two approaches reveal that the mathematical framework for 2+1D bosonic topological order with gappable edge is closely related to unitary fusion category theory. In this paper, we generalize these systematic descriptions of topological orders to 2D fermion systems. We find a classification of 2+1D fermionic topological orders with gappable edge in terms of the following set of data $(N^{ij}_k, F^{ij}_k, F^{ijm,αβ}_{jkn,χδ},d_i)$, that satisfy a set of non-linear algebraic equations. The exactly soluble Hamiltonians can be constructed from the above data on any lattices to realize the corresponding topological orders. When $F^{ij}_k=0$, our result recovers the previous classification of 2+1D bosonic topological orders with gappable edge.

On Enriching the Levin-Wen model with Symmetry

Symmetry protected and symmetry enriched topological phases of matter are of great interest in condensed matter physics due to new materials such as topological insulators. The Levin-Wen model for spin/boson systems is an important rigorously solvable model for studying $2D$ topological phases. The input data for the Levin-Wen model is a unitary fusion category, but the same model also works for unitary multi-fusion categories. In this paper, we provide the details for this extension of the Levin-Wen model, and show that the extended Levin-Wen model is a natural playground for the theoretical study of symmetry protected and symmetry enriched topological phases of matter.
