Equivalent Conditions for Domination of $\mathrm{M}(2,\mathbb{C})$-sequences

It is well known that a $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-sequence is uniformly hyperbolic if and only it satisfies a uniform exponential growth condition. Similarly, for $\mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-sequences whose determinants are uniformly bounded away from zero, it has dominated splitting if and only if it satisfies a uniform exponential gap condition between the two singular values. Inspired by [QTZ], we provide a similar equivalent description in terms of singular values for $\mathrm{M}(2,\mathbb{C})$-sequences that admit dominated splitting. We also prove a version of the Avalanche Principle for such sequences.

Schrödinger Operators with Potentials Generated by Hyperbolic Transformations: II. Large Deviations and Anderson Localization

We consider discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators whose potentials are generated by Hölder continuous sampling along the orbits of a uniformly hyperbolic transformation. For any ergodic measure satisfying a suitable bounded distortion property, we establish a uniform large deviation estimate in a large energy region provided that the sampling function is locally constant or has small supremum norm. We also prove full spectral Anderson localization for the operators in question.

Johnson-Schwartzman Gap Labelling for Ergodic Jacobi Matrices

We consider two-sided Jacobi matrices whose coefficients are obtained by continuous sampling along the orbits of a homeomorphim of a compact metric space. Given an ergodic probability measure, we study the topological structure of the associated almost sure spectrum. We establish a gap labelling theorem in the spirit of Johnson and Schwartzman. That is, we show that the constant value the integrated density of states takes in a gap of the spectrum must belong to the countable Schwartzman group of the base dynamics. This result is a natural companion to a recent result of Alkorn and Zhang, which established a Johnson-type theorem for the families of Jacobi matrices in question.

On the Correspondence Between Domination and the Spectrum of Jacobi Operators

In this paper, we first develop a notion of dominated splitting for $\mathbb M(2,\mathbb C)$-sequences and show it is a stable property under $\|\cdot \|_\infty$-perturbation. Then we show an energy parameter belongs to the spectrum of a Jacobi operator, possibly singular, if and only if the associated Jacobi cocycle does not admit dominated splitting. This generalizes the results obtained by the second author [Z] in the scenario of Schrödinger operators. Finally, we consider dynamically defined Jacobi operators whose base dynamics is only assumed to be topologically transitive. We show an energy parameter belongs to the spectrum of the operator defined by the base point with a dense orbit if and only if the dynamically defined Jacobi cocycle does not admit dominated splitting. This includes the original Johnson's theorem obtained by R. Johnson [J] for Schödinger operators and the main theorem obtained by C. Marx [Ma] for Jacobi operators as special cases.

Schrödinger Operators With Potentials Generated by Hyperbolic Transformations: I. Positivity of the Lyapunov Exponent

We consider discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators whose potentials are generated by sampling along the orbits of a general hyperbolic transformation. Specifically, we show that if the sampling function is a non-constant Hölder continuous function defined on a subshift of finite type with an ergodic measure admitting a local product structure and a fixed point, then the Lyapunov exponent is positive away from a discrete set of energies. Moreover, for sampling functions in a residual subset of the space of Hölder continuous functions, the Lyapunov exponent is positive everywhere. If we consider locally constant or globally fiber bunched sampling functions, then the Lyapuonv exponent is positive away from a finite set. Moreover, for sampling functions in an open and dense subset of the space in question, the Lyapunov exponent is uniformly positive. Our results can be applied to any subshift of finite type with ergodic measures that are equilibrium states of Hölder continuous potentials. In particular, we apply our results to Schrödinger operators defined over expanding maps on the unit circle, hyperbolic automorphisms of a finite-dimensional torus, and Markov chains.

Uniform hyperbolicity and its relation with spectral analysis of 1D discrete Schrödinger Operators

This paper intends to provide new, simple, and self-contained proofs of the equivalence of various different descriptions of the uniformly hyperbolic $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)$ sequences. While in the scenario of the Schrödinger cocyles, they may in turn be applied to give new and simple proofs of theorems regarding their relation with the spectral analysis of one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operators. Concretely, this paper gives four different descriptions of uniformly hyperbolic sequences together with the detailed proofs of their equivalence. It provides concise and self-contained proof of the Johnson's Theorem [Jo], both for sequence and dynamically defined potentials. In particular, we give two different proofs of the direction `uniform hyperbolicity away from the spectrum', of which one is the standard argument in the spirit of Russell Johnson's original proof and the other involves Combes-Thomas type of estimate [CT]. Finally, the relation between the Avalanche Principle, discovered by Goldstein-Schlag [GS], and the uniformly hyperbolic sequence is explored which yields a simple proof and a better version of the Avalanche Principle. Many ingredients of the proofs in this paper are new, in particular the use of asymptotic stable and unstable directions, are of independent interest and have been applied to many other related problems.

Localization for the one-dimensional Anderson model via positivity and large deviations for the Lyapunov exponent

We provide a complete and self-contained proof of spectral and dynamical localization for the one-dimensional Anderson model, starting from the positivity of the Lyapunov exponent provided by Fürstenberg's theorem. That is, a Schrödinger operator in $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})$ whose potential is given by independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables almost surely has pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions and its unitary group exhibits exponential off-diagonal decay, uniformly in time. This is achieved by way of a new result: for the Anderson model, one typically has Lyapunov behavior for all generalized eigenfunctions. We also explain how to obtain analogous statements for extended CMV matrices whose Verblunsky coefficients are i.i.d., as well as for half-line analogs of these models.

Spectral Characteristics of the Unitary Critical Almost-Mathieu Operator

We discuss spectral characteristics of a one-dimensional quantum walk whose coins are distributed quasi-periodically. The unitary update rule of this quantum walk shares many spectral characteristics with the critical Almost-Mathieu Operator; however, it possesses a feature not present in the Almost-Mathieu Operator, namely singularity of the associated cocycles (this feature is, however, present in the so-called Extended Harper's Model). We show that this operator has empty absolutely continuous spectrum and that the Lyapunov exponent vanishes on the spectrum; hence, this model exhibits Cantor spectrum of zero Lebesgue measure for all irrational frequencies and arbitrary phase, which in physics is known as Hofstadter's butterfly. In fact, we will show something stronger, namely, that all spectral parameters in the spectrum are of critical type, in the language of Avila's global theory of analytic quasiperiodic cocycles. We further prove that it has empty point spectrum for each irrational frequency and away from a frequency-dependent set of phases having Lebesgue measure zero. The key ingredients in our proofs are an adaptation of Avila's Global Theory to the present setting, self-duality via the Fourier transform, and a Johnson-type theorem for singular dynamically defined CMV matrices which characterizes their spectra as the set of spectral parameters at which the associated cocycles fail to admit a dominated splitting.

Cantor spectrum for a class of $C^2$ quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators

We show that for a class of $C^2$ quasiperiodic potentials and for any Diophantine frequency, the spectrum of the corresponding Schrödinger operators is Cantor. Our approach is of purely dynamical systems, which depends on a detailed analysis of asymptotic stable and unstable directions. We also apply it to general $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)$ cocycles, and obtain that uniform hyperbolic systems form a open and dense set in some one-parameter family.

Singular Density of States Measure for Subshift and Quasi-Periodic Schrödinger Operators

Simon's subshift conjecture states that for every aperiodic minimal subshift of Verblunsky coefficients, the common essential support of the associated measures has zero Lebesgue measure. We disprove this conjecture in this paper, both in the form stated and in the analogous formulation of it for discrete Schrödinger operators. In addition we prove a weak version of the conjecture in the Schrödinger setting. Namely, under some additional assumptions on the subshift, we show that the density of states measure, a natural measure associated with the operator family and whose topological support is equal to the spectrum, is singular. We also consider one-frequency quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators with continuous sampling functions and show that generically, the density of states measure is singular as well.

Uniform Positivity and Continuity of Lyapunov Exponents for a Class of $C^2$ Quasiperiodic Schrödinger Cocycles

We show that for a class of $C^2$ quasiperiodic potentials and for any Diophantine frequency, the Lyapunov exponents of the corresponding Schrödinger cocycles are uniformly positive and weak Hölder continuous as function of energies. As a corollary, we also obtain that the corresponding integrated density of states (IDS) is weak Hölder continous. Our approach is of purely dynamical systems, which depends on a detailed analysis of asymptotic stable and unstable directions. We also apply it to more general $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)$ cocycles, which in turn can be applied to get uniform positivity and continuity of Lyapuonv exponents around unique nondegenerate extremal points of any smooth potential, and to a certain class of $C^2$ Szeg\H o cocycles.

Positive Lyapunov Exponents for Quasiperiodic Szego cocycles

In this paper we first obtain a formula of averaged Lyapunov exponents for ergodic Szego cocycles via the Herman-Avila-Bochi formula. Then using acceleration, we construct a class of analytic quasi-periodic Szego cocycles with uniformly positive Lyapunov exponents. Finally, a simple application of the main theorem in [Y] allows us to estimate the Lebesgue measure of support of the measure associated to certain class of C1 quasiperiodic 2- sided Verblunsky coefficients. Using the same method, we also recover the [S-S] results for Schrodinger cocycles with nonconstant real analytic potentials and obtain some nonuniform hyperbolicity results for arbitrarily fixed Brjuno frequency and for certain C1 potentials.
