Efficient Medical Image Segmentation with Intermediate Supervision Mechanism

Because the expansion path of U-Net may ignore the characteristics of small targets, intermediate supervision mechanism is proposed. The original mask is also entered into the network as a label for intermediate output. However, U-Net is mainly engaged in segmentation, and the extracted features are also targeted at segmentation location information, and the input and output are different. The label we need is that the input and output are both original masks, which is more similar to the refactoring process, so we propose another intermediate supervision mechanism. However, the features extracted by the contraction path of this intermediate monitoring mechanism are not necessarily consistent. For example, U-Net's contraction path extracts transverse features, while auto-encoder extracts longitudinal features, which may cause the output of the expansion path to be inconsistent with the label. Therefore, we put forward the intermediate supervision mechanism of shared-weight decoder module. Although the intermediate supervision mechanism improves the segmentation accuracy, the training time is too long due to the extra input and multiple loss functions. For one of these problems, we have introduced tied-weight decoder. To reduce the redundancy of the model, we combine shared-weight decoder module with tied-weight decoder module.

w-Net: Dual Supervised Medical Image Segmentation Model with Multi-Dimensional Attention and Cascade Multi-Scale Convolution

Deep learning-based medical image segmentation technology aims at automatic recognizing and annotating objects on the medical image. Non-local attention and feature learning by multi-scale methods are widely used to model network, which drives progress in medical image segmentation. However, those attention mechanism methods have weakly non-local receptive fields' strengthened connection for small objects in medical images. Then, the features of important small objects in abstract or coarse feature maps may be deserted, which leads to unsatisfactory performance. Moreover, the existing multi-scale methods only simply focus on different sizes of view, whose sparse multi-scale features collected are not abundant enough for small objects segmentation. In this work, a multi-dimensional attention segmentation model with cascade multi-scale convolution is proposed to predict accurate segmentation for small objects in medical images. As the weight function, multi-dimensional attention modules provide coefficient modification for significant/informative small objects features. Furthermore, The cascade multi-scale convolution modules in each skip-connection path are exploited to capture multi-scale features in different semantic depth. The proposed method is evaluated on three datasets: KiTS19, Pancreas CT of Decathlon-10, and MICCAI 2018 LiTS Challenge, demonstrating better segmentation performances than the state-of-the-art baselines.

Arena: A General Evaluation Platform and Building Toolkit for Multi-Agent Intelligence

Learning agents that are not only capable of taking tests, but also innovating is becoming a hot topic in AI. One of the most promising paths towards this vision is multi-agent learning, where agents act as the environment for each other, and improving each agent means proposing new problems for others. However, existing evaluation platforms are either not compatible with multi-agent settings, or limited to a specific game. That is, there is not yet a general evaluation platform for research on multi-agent intelligence. To this end, we introduce Arena, a general evaluation platform for multi-agent intelligence with 35 games of diverse logics and representations. Furthermore, multi-agent intelligence is still at the stage where many problems remain unexplored. Therefore, we provide a building toolkit for researchers to easily invent and build novel multi-agent problems from the provided game set based on a GUI-configurable social tree and five basic multi-agent reward schemes. Finally, we provide Python implementations of five state-of-the-art deep multi-agent reinforcement learning baselines. Along with the baseline implementations, we release a set of 100 best agents/teams that we can train with different training schemes for each game, as the base for evaluating agents with population performance. As such, the research community can perform comparisons under a stable and uniform standard. All the implementations and accompanied tutorials have been open-sourced for the community at https://sites.google.com/view/arena-unity/.

Mega-Reward: Achieving Human-Level Play without Extrinsic Rewards

Intrinsic rewards were introduced to simulate how human intelligence works; they are usually evaluated by intrinsically-motivated play, i.e., playing games without extrinsic rewards but evaluated with extrinsic rewards. However, none of the existing intrinsic reward approaches can achieve human-level performance under this very challenging setting of intrinsically-motivated play. In this work, we propose a novel megalomania-driven intrinsic reward (called mega-reward), which, to our knowledge, is the first approach that achieves human-level performance in intrinsically-motivated play. Intuitively, mega-reward comes from the observation that infants' intelligence develops when they try to gain more control on entities in an environment; therefore, mega-reward aims to maximize the control capabilities of agents on given entities in a given environment. To formalize mega-reward, a relational transition model is proposed to bridge the gaps between direct and latent control. Experimental studies show that mega-reward (i) can greatly outperform all state-of-the-art intrinsic reward approaches, (ii) generally achieves the same level of performance as Ex-PPO and professional human-level scores, and (iii) has also a superior performance when it is incorporated with extrinsic rewards.

Segmentation is All You Need

Region proposal mechanisms are essential for existing deep learning approaches to object detection in images. Although they can generally achieve a good detection performance under normal circumstances, their recall in a scene with extreme cases is unacceptably low. This is mainly because bounding box annotations contain much environment noise information, and non-maximum suppression (NMS) is required to select target boxes. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the first anchor-free and NMS-free object detection model called weakly supervised multimodal annotation segmentation (WSMA-Seg), which utilizes segmentation models to achieve an accurate and robust object detection without NMS. In WSMA-Seg, multimodal annotations are proposed to achieve an instance-aware segmentation using weakly supervised bounding boxes; we also develop a run-data-based following algorithm to trace contours of objects. In addition, we propose a multi-scale pooling segmentation (MSP-Seg) as the underlying segmentation model of WSMA-Seg to achieve a more accurate segmentation and to enhance the detection accuracy of WSMA-Seg. Experimental results on multiple datasets show that the proposed WSMA-Seg approach outperforms the state-of-the-art detectors.

The Bernstein inequality for slice regular polynomials

Due to the invalidation of the Gauss-Lucas type result for quaternionic polynomials, we first give in this paper an alternative proof of the Bernstein inequality in $L^{p} (1\leq p \leq+\infty)$ for slice regular polynomials by the Fejér kernel and the Minkowski inequality. Secondly, we extend a result of Ankeny-Rivlin to the quaternionic setting via the Hopf lemma. By the way, some Turan inequalities are established for slice regular polynomials.

Bandwidth Reduction using Importance Weighted Pruning on Ring AllReduce

It is inevitable to train large deep learning models on a large-scale cluster equipped with accelerators system. Deep gradient compression would highly increase the bandwidth utilization and speed up the training process but hard to implement on ring structure. In this paper, we find that redundant gradient and gradient staleness has negative effect on training. We have observed that in different epoch and different steps, the neural networks focus on updating different layers and different parameters. In order to save more communication bandwidth and preserve the accuracy on ring structure, which break the restrict as the node increase, we propose a new algorithm to measure the importance of gradients on large-scale cluster implementing ring all-reduce based on the size of the ratio of parameter calculation gradient to parameter value. Our importance weighted pruning approach achieved 64X and 58.8X of gradient compression ratio on AlexNet and ResNet50 on ImageNet. Meanwhile, in order to maintain the sparseness of the gradient propagation, we randomly broadcast the index of important gradients on each node. While the remaining nodes are ready for the index gradient and perform all-reduce update. This would speed up the convergence of the model and preserve the training accuracy.

Diversity-Driven Extensible Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning

Hierarchical reinforcement learning (HRL) has recently shown promising advances on speeding up learning, improving the exploration, and discovering intertask transferable skills. Most recent works focus on HRL with two levels, i.e., a master policy manipulates subpolicies, which in turn manipulate primitive actions. However, HRL with multiple levels is usually needed in many real-world scenarios, whose ultimate goals are highly abstract, while their actions are very primitive. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a diversity-driven extensible HRL (DEHRL), where an extensible and scalable framework is built and learned levelwise to realize HRL with multiple levels. DEHRL follows a popular assumption: diverse subpolicies are useful, i.e., subpolicies are believed to be more useful if they are more diverse. However, existing implementations of this diversity assumption usually have their own drawbacks, which makes them inapplicable to HRL with multiple levels. Consequently, we further propose a novel diversity-driven solution to achieve this assumption in DEHRL. Experimental studies evaluate DEHRL with five baselines from four perspectives in two domains; the results show that DEHRL outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines in all four aspects.

Slice starlike functions over quaternions

In this paper, we initiate the study of the geometric function theory for slice starlike functions over quaternions and its subclasses. This allows us to answer negatively some questions about the Bieberbach conjecture, the growth, distortion, and covering theorems for slice regular functions. Precisely, we find that the Bieberbach conjecture holds true for slice starlike functions in contrast to the fact that the Bieberbach conjecture fails for biholomorphic starlike mappings in higher dimensions. We also establish some sharp versions of the growth, distortion, and covering theorems for quaternions.

Hybrid Deep-Semantic Matrix Factorization for Tag-Aware Personalized Recommendation

Matrix factorization has now become a dominant solution for personalized recommendation on the Social Web. To alleviate the cold start problem, previous approaches have incorporated various additional sources of information into traditional matrix factorization models. These upgraded models, however, achieve only "marginal" enhancements on the performance of personalized recommendation. Therefore, inspired by the recent development of deep-semantic modeling, we propose a hybrid deep-semantic matrix factorization (HDMF) model to further improve the performance of tag-aware personalized recommendation by integrating the techniques of deep-semantic modeling, hybrid learning, and matrix factorization. Experimental results show that HDMF significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines in tag-aware personalized recommendation, in terms of all evaluation metrics, e.g., its mean reciprocal rank (resp., mean average precision) is 1.52 (resp., 1.66) times as high as that of the best baseline.

On two Bloch type theorems for quaternionic slice regular functions

In this paper we prove two Bloch type theorems for quaternionic slice regular functions. We first discuss the injective and covering properties of some classes of slice regular functions from slice regular Bloch spaces and slice regular Bergman spaces, respectively. And then we show that there exits a universal ball contained in the image of the open unit ball $\mathbb{B}$ in quaternions $\mathbb{H}$ through the slice regular rotation $\widetilde{f}_{u}$ of each slice regular function $f:\overline{\mathbb{B}}\rightarrow \mathbb{H}$ with $f'(0)=1$ for some $u\in \partial\mathbb{B}$.

For given a graph $H$, a graphic sequence $π=(d_1,d_2,...,d_n)$ is said to be potentially $H$-graphic if there exists a realization of $π$ containing $H$ as a subgraph. In this paper, we characterize the potentially $K_6-C_5$ -graphic sequences.
