MERBIT: A GPU-Based SpMV Method for Iterative Workloads

Sparse Matrix-Vector Multiplication (SpMV) is the cornerstone in many iterative workloads, including large-scale graph analytics and sparse iterative solvers. Accelerating SpMV on real-world graphs remains challenging due to highly irregular sparsity patterns. In this paper, we propose MERBIT, a GPU SpMV method designed for repeated SpMV on irregular, graph-like sparse matrices, with PageRank as a representative motivating workload. MERBIT combines two key ideas from existing GPU SpMV methods. At the global level, it uses merge-path partitioning to balance work over nonzeros and row boundaries. At the local level, it encodes each merge-path segment using a compact bit-field descriptor. MERBIT improves workload balance and promotes coalesced memory access for both matrix loading and output writes; moreover, three optimization strategies are incorporated to further enhance performance. Experiments on 50 large irregular datasets demonstrate that MERBIT outperforms competitive baselines, including cuSPARSE, Ginkgo, and academic approaches, achieving average speedups of 1.27 and 1.25 over cuSPARSE COO in single and double precision, respectively.

A new model for spherical galaxies and its distribution functions

A new potential is presented for spherical galaxies. The technique of the construction of our model is similar to that given by An and Evans. In a special case, its mass density becomes a special one of the Hernquist model. Another special model is primarily discussed, and its intrinsic properties, such as velocity dispersions and surface densities, can be shown directly by numerical calculation. Its distribution functions in both isotropic and anisotropic cases can be expressed as some definite integrals which are suitable for numerical calculation.

Average Regularity of the Solution to an Equation with the Relativistic-free Transport Operator

Let $u=u(t,{\bf x},{\bf p})$ satisfy the transport equation $\frac {\partial u}{\partial t}+\frac {\bf p}{p_0}\frac{\partial u}{\partial{\bf x}}=f$, where $f=f(t,\bf x,\bf p)$ belongs to $ L^{p}((0,T)\times {\bf R}^{3}\times {\bf R}^{3})$ for $1<p<\infty$ and $\frac {\partial}{\partial t}+\frac {\bf p}{p_0}\frac{\partial}{\partial{\bf x}}$ is the relativistic-free transport operator. We show the regularity of $\int_{{\bf R}^{3}}u(t, {\bf x}, {\bf p})d{\bf p}$ using the same method as given by Golse, Lions, Perthame and Sentis. This average regularity is considered in terms of fractional Sobolev spaces and it is very useful for the study of the existence of the solution to the Cauchy problem on the relativistic Boltzmann equation.

Global Existence Proof for Relativistic Boltzmann Equation with Hard Interactions

By combining the DiPerna and Lions techniques for the nonrelativistic Boltzmann equation and the Dudyński and Ekiel-Jeżewska device of the causality of the relativistic Boltzmann equation, it is shown that there exists a global mild solution to the Cauchy problem for the relativistic Boltzmann equation with the assumptions of the relativistic scattering cross section including some relativistic hard interactions and the initial data satisfying finite mass, energy and entropy. This is in fact an extension of the result of Dudyński and Ekiel-Jeżewska to the case of the relativistic Boltzmann equation with hard interactions.

Anisotropic distribution functions for spherical galaxies

A method is presented for finding anisotropic distribution functions for stellar systems with known, spherically symmetric, densities, which depends only on the two classical integrals of the energy and the magnitude of the angular momentum. It requires the density to be expressed as a sum of products of functions of the potential and of the radial coordinate. The solution corresponding to this type of density is in turn a sum of products of functions of the energy and of the magnitude of the angular momentum. The products of the density and its radial and transverse velocity dispersions can be also expressed as a sum of products of functions of the potential and of the radial coordinate. Several examples are given, including some of new anisotropic distribution functions. This device can be extended further to the related problem of finding two-integral distribution functions for axisymmetric galaxies.

Dynamical modelling of the elliptical galaxy NGC 2974

In this paper we analyse the relations between a previously described oblate Jaffe model for an ellipsoidal galaxy and the observed quantities for NGC 2974, and obtain the length and velocity scales for a relevant elliptical galaxy model. We then derive the finite total mass of the model from these scales, and finally find a good fit of an isotropic oblate Jaffe model by using the Gauss-Hermite fit parameters and the observed ellipticity of the galaxy NGC 2974. The model is also used to predict the total luminous mass of NGC 2974, assuming that the influence of dark matter in this galaxy on the image, ellipticity and Gauss-Hermite fit parameters of this galaxy is negligible within the central region, of radius $0.5R_{\rm e}.$

Volume Growth and Curvature Decay of Complete Positively Curved Kähler Manifolds

This paper constructs a class of complete Kähler metrics of positive holomorphic sectional curvature on ${\bf C}^n$ and finds that the constructed metrics satisfy the following properties: As the geodesic distance $ρ\to\infty,$ the volume of geodesic balls grows like $O(ρ^{\frac{2(β+1)n}{β+2}})$ and the Riemannian scalar curvature decays like $O(ρ^{-\frac{2(β+1)}{β+2}}),$ where $β\geq 0.$

Axisymmetric models for galaxies by equipotential and equidensity methods

In this paper we outline equipotential and equidensity methods of constructing axisymmetric models for galaxies. The former method defines equipotentials, from which the corresponding densities of the galaxy models can be obtained using Poisson's equation; the latter defines the equidensity surfaces of the galaxy models directly.

General Flattened Jaffe Models for Galaxies

In this paper we extend oblate and prolate Jaffe models into more general flattened Jaffe models. Since dynamical properties of oblate and prolate Jaffe Models have been studied by Jiang & Moss, they are not repeated here.

Global solution to the Cauchy problem on a universe fireworks model

We prove existence and uniqueness of the global solution to the Cauchy problem on a universe fireworks model with finite total mass at the initial state when the ratio of the mass surviving the explosion, the probability of the explosion of fragments and the probability function of the velocity change of a surviving particle satisfy the corresponding physical conditions. Although the nonrelativistic Boltzmann-like equation modeling the universe fireworks is mathematically easy, this paper leads rather theoretically to an understanding of how to construct contractive mappings in a Banach space for the proof of the existence and uniqueness by means of methods taken from the famous work by DiPerna & Lions about the Boltzmann equation. We also show both the regularity and the time-asymptotic behavior of solution to the Cauchy problem.

Existence of Global Solution of the Cauchy Problem for the Relativistic Boltzmann Equation with Hard Interactions

By using the DiPerna and Lions techniques for the nonrelativistic Boltzmann equation, it is shown that there exists a global mild solution to the Cauchy problem for the relativistic Boltzmann equation with the assumptions of the relativistic scattering cross section including some relativistic hard interactions and the initial data satifying finite mass, ``inertia'', energy and entropy.

Global Solution to Enskog Equation with External Force in Infinite Vacuum

We first give hypotheses of the bicharacteristic equations corresponding to the Enskog equation with an external force. Since the collision operator of the Enskog equation is more complicated than that of the Boltzmann equation, these hypotheses are more complicated than those given by Duan et al. for the Boltzmann equation. The hypotheses are very related to collision of particles of moderately or highly dense gases along the bicharacteristic curves and they can be used to make the estimation of the so-called gain and loss integrals of the Enskog integral equation. Then, by controlling these integrals, we show the existence and uniqueness of the global mild solution to the Enskog equation in an infinite vacuum for moderately or highly dense gases. Finally, we make some remarks on the locally Lipschitz assumption of the collision factors in the Enskog equation.

Two-integral distribution functions for axisymmetric stellar systems with separable densities

We show different expressions of distribution functions (DFs) which depend only on the two classical integrals of the energy and the magnitude of the angular momentum with respect to the axis of symmetry for stellar systems with known axisymmetric densities. The density of the system is required to be a product of functions separable in the potential and the radial coordinate, where the functions of the radial coordinate are powers of a sum of a square of the radial coordinate and its unit scale. The even part of the two-integral DF corresponding to this type of density is in turn a sum or an infinite series of products of functions of the energy and of the magnitude of the angular momentum about the axis of symmetry. A similar expression of its odd part can be also obtained under the assumption of the rotation laws. It can be further shown that these expressions are in fact equivalent to those obtained by using Hunter and Qian's contour integral formulae for the system. This method is generally computationally preferable to the contour integral method. Two examples are given to obtain the even and odd parts of their two-integral DFs. One is for the prolate Jaffe model and the other for the prolate Plummer model. It can be also found that the Hunter-Qian contour integral formulae of the two-integral even DF for axisymmetric systems can be recovered by use of the Laplace-Mellin integral transformation originally developed by Dejonghe.

Two-integral distribution functions for axisymmetric systems

Some formulae are presented for finding two-integral distribution functions (DFs) which depends only on the two classical integrals of the energy and the magnitude of the angular momentum with respect to the axis of symmetry for stellar systems with known axisymmetric densities. They come from an combination of the ideas of Eddington and Fricke and they are also an extension of those shown by Jiang and Ossipkov for finding anisotropic DFs for spherical galaxies. The density of the system is required to be expressed as a sum of products of functions of the potential and of the radial coordinate. The solution corresponding to this type of density is in turn a sum of products of functions of the energy and of the magnitude of the angular momentum about the axis of symmetry. The product of the density and its radial velocity dispersion can be also expressed as a sum of products of functions of the potential and of the radial coordinate. It can be further known that the density multipied by its rotational velocity dispersion is equal to a sum of products of functions of the potential and of the radial coordinate minus the product of the density and the square of its mean rotational velocity. These formulae can be applied to the Binney and the Lynden-Bell models. An infinity of the odd DFs for the Binney model can be also found under the assumption of the laws of the rotational velocity.

The weak Banach-Saks Property of the Space $(L_μ^p)^m$

In this paper we show the weak Banach-Saks property of the Banach vector space $(L_μ^p)^m$ generated by $m$ $L_μ^p$-spaces for $1\leq p<+\infty,$ where $m$ is any given natural number. When $m=1,$ this is the famous Banach-Saks-Szlenk theorem. By use of this property, we also present inequalities for integrals of functions that are the composition of nonnegative continuous convex functions on a convex set of a vector space ${\bf R}^m$ and vector-valued functions in a weakly compact subset of the space $(L_μ^p)^m$ for $1\leq p<+\infty$ and inequalities when these vector-valued functions are in a weakly* compact subset of the product space $(L_μ^\infty)^m$ generated by $m$ $L_μ^\infty$-spaces.

The Banach-Saks Property of the Banach Product Spaces

In this paper we first take a detail survey of the study of the Banach-Saks property of Banach spaces and then show the Banach-Saks property of the product spaces generated by a finite number of Banach spaces having the Banach-Saks property. A more general inequality for integrals of a class of composite functions is also given by using this property.

Lyapunov Functionals for the Enskog Equation

Two Lyapunov functionals are presented for the Enskog equation. One is to describe interactions between particles with various velocities and another is to measure the $L^1$ distance between two classical solutions. The former yields the time-asymptotic convergence of global classical solutions to the collision free motion while the latter is applied into the verification of the $L^1$ stability of global classical solutions.
