Can Language Models Discover Scaling Laws?

Discovering scaling laws for predicting model performance at scale is a fundamental and open-ended challenge, mostly reliant on slow, case specific human experimentation. To investigate the potential for LLMs to automate this process, we collect over 5,000 experiments from existing literature and curate eight diverse scaling law discovery tasks. While existing agents struggle to produce accurate law formulas, this paper introduces SLDAgent, an evolution-based agent that co-optimize the scaling law model and the parameters, enabling it to autonomously explore complex relationships between variables. For the first time, we demonstrates that SLDAgent can automatically discover laws that exhibit consistently more accurate extrapolation than their established, human-derived counterparts across all tasks. Through comprehensive analysis, we elucidate why these discovered laws are superior and verify their practical utility in both pretraining and finetuning applications. This work establishes a new paradigm for agentic scientific discovery, showing that AI systems can understand their own scaling behavior, and can contribute novel and practical knowledge back to the research community.

Bone tumor suppression in rabbits by hyperthermia below the clinical safety limit using aligned magnetic bone cement

Demonstrating highly efficient alternating current (AC) magnetic field heating of nanoparticles in physiological environments under clinically safe field parameters has remained a great challenge, hindering clinical applications of magnetic hyperthermia. In this work, we report exceptionally high loss power of magnetic bone cement under clinical safety limit of AC field parameters, incorporating DC field-aligned soft magnetic Zn0.3Fe2.7O4 nanoparticles with low concentration. Under an AC field of 4 kA/m at 430 kHz, the aligned bone cement with 0.2 wt% nanoparticles achieved a temperature increase of 30 C in 180 s. This amounts to a specific loss power value of 327 W/gmetal and an intrinsic loss power of 47 nHm^2/kg, which is enhanced by 50-fold compared to randomly oriented samples. The high-performance magnetic bone cement allows for the demonstration of effective hyperthermia suppression of tumor growth in the bone marrow cavity of New Zealand White Rabbits subjecting to rapid cooling due to blood circulation, and significant enhancement of survival rate.

Lower Bound on the Optimal Access Bandwidth of ($K+2,K,2$)-MDS Array Code with Degraded Read Friendly

Accessing the data in the failed disk (degraded read) with low latency is crucial for an erasure-coded storage system. In this work, the maximum distance separable (MDS) array code with the property of degraded-read friendly (DRF) is discussed. For the DRF MDS array code with 2 redundant nodes and the sub-packetization level of 2, the lower bound of its access bandwidth is derived.

Update Bandwidth for Distributed Storage

In this paper, we consider the update bandwidth in distributed storage systems~(DSSs). The update bandwidth, which measures the transmission efficiency of the update process in DSSs, is defined as the total amount of data symbols transferred in the network when the data symbols stored in a node are updated. This paper contains the following contributions. First, we establish the closed-form expression of the minimum update bandwidth attainable by irregular array codes. Second, after defining a class of irregular array codes, called Minimum Update Bandwidth~(MUB) codes, which achieve the minimum update bandwidth of irregular array codes, we determine the smallest code redundancy attainable by MUB codes. Third, the code parameters, with which the minimum code redundancy of irregular array codes and the smallest code redundancy of MUB codes can be equal, are identified, which allows us to define MR-MUB codes as a class of irregular array codes that simultaneously achieve the minimum code redundancy and the minimum update bandwidth. Fourth, we introduce explicit code constructions of MR-MUB codes and MUB codes with the smallest code redundancy. Fifth, we establish a lower bound of the update complexity of MR-MUB codes, which can be used to prove that the minimum update complexity of irregular array codes may not be achieved by MR-MUB codes. Last, we construct a class of $(n = k + 2, k)$ vertical maximum-distance separable (MDS) array codes that can achieve all of the minimum code redundancy, the minimum update bandwidth and the optimal repair bandwidth of irregular array codes.

On the Exact Lower Bounds of Encoding Circuit Sizes of Hamming Codes and Hadamard Codes

In this paper, we investigate the encoding circuit size of Hamming codes and Hadamard codes. To begin with, we prove the exact lower bound of circuit size required in the encoding of (punctured)~Hadamard codes and (extended)~Hamming codes. Then the encoding algorithms for (punctured)~Hadamard codes are presented to achieve the derived lower bounds. For (extended)~Hamming codes, we also propose encoding algorithms that achieve the lower bounds.

Shear-Exfoliated Phosphorene for Rechargeable Nanoscale Battery

Discovery of atomically thin black phosphorus (called phosphorene) holds promise to be used as an alternative two-dimensional material to graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides especially as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, at present bulk black phosphorus (BP) still suffers from rapid capacity fading that results in poor rechargeable performance. Here, for the first time, we use in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to construct nanoscale phosphorene LIBs and visualize the capacity fading mechanism in thick multilayer phosphorene by real time capturing delithiation-induced structural decomposition that reduces electrical conductivity and thus causes irreversibility of lithiated Li3P phase. We further demonstrate that few-layer phosphorene successfully circumvents the structural decomposition and holds superior structural restorability, even subjected to multi-cycle lithiation/delithiation processes and concomitant huge volume expansion. This finding affords new experimental insights into thickness-dependent lithium diffusion kinetics in phosphorene. Additionally, a scalable liquid-phase shear exfoliation route has been developed to produce high-quality ultrathin (monolayer or few-layer) phosphorene, only by a high-speed shear mixer or even a household kitchen blender with the shear rate threshold, which will pave the way for potential large-scale applications in LIBs once the rechargeable phosphorene nanoscale batteries can be transferred to industrialized enlargement in the future.
