Flexible Perovskite/Silicon Monolithic Tandem Solar Cells Approaching 30% Efficiency

Thanks to their excellent properties of low cost, lightweight, portability, and conformity, flexible perovskite-based tandem solar cells show great potentials for energy harvesting applications, with flexible perovskite/c-silicon tandem solar cells particularly promising for achieving high efficiency. However, performance of flexible perovskite/c-silicon monolithic tandem solar cells still greatly lags, due to challenges in simultaneously achieving both efficient photocarrier transport and reliable mitigation of residual stress. Here, we reveal the critical role of perovskite phase homogeneity, for achieving high-efficient and mechanical-stable flexible perovskite/c-silicon heterojunction monolithic tandem solar cells (PSTs) with textured surface. Through ensuring high phase homogeneity, which promotes charge transfer across all facets of the pyramid on the textured substrates and releases the residual stress at the perovskite/c-silicon interface, we demonstrate flexible PSTs with a bending curvature of 0.44 cm-1, and a certified power conversion efficiency of 29.88% (1.04 cm2 aperture area), surpassing all other types of flexible perovskite-based photovoltaic devices. Our results can lead to broad applications and commercialization of flexible perovskite/c-silicon tandem photovoltaics.

Haldane phase, field-induced magnetic ordering and Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior in a spin-one chain compound NiC$_2$O$_4$$\cdot$2NH$_3$

We performed single-crystal magnetic susceptibility and $^1$H NMR measurements on a quasi-1D, spin-1 antiferromagnet NiC$_2$O$_4$$\cdot$2NH$_3$, with temperature down to 100 mK and with field up to 26 T. With field applied along the chain direction (crystalline $b$ direction), a spin gap is determined at low fields. Our susceptibility and spin-lattice relaxation measurements reveal a Haldane phase at low field, with an intrachain exchange coupling $J$ $\approx$ 35 K and an easy-plane single-ion anisotropy of 17 K. A field-induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering emerges at fields of 2.1 T, which sets a three-dimensional (3D) quantum critical point (QCP). The high-temperature spin-lattice relaxation rates $1/T_1$ resolves an onset of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior at field above $3.5$ T, which characterizes a hidden 1D QCP.

Structural and magnetic characterization of CeTa$_7$O$_{19}$ and YbTa$_7$O$_{19}$ with two-dimensional pseudospin-1/2 triangular lattice

Triangular lattice antiferromagnets are prototypes for frustrated magnetism and may potentially realize novel quantum magnetic states such as a quantum spin liquid ground state. A recent work suggests NdTa$_7$O$_{19}$ with rare-earth triangular lattice is a quantum spin liquid candidate and highlights the large family of rare-earth heptatantalates as a framework for quantum magnetism investigation. In this paper, we report the structural and magnetic characterization of CeTa$_7$O$_{19}$ and YbTa$_7$O$_{19}$. Both compounds are isostructural to NdTa$_7$O$_{19}$ with no detectable structural disorder. For CeTa$_7$O$_{19}$, the crystal field energy levels and parameters are determined by inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Based on the crystal field result, the magnetic susceptibility data could be well fitted and explained, which reveals that CeTa$_7$O$_{19}$ is a highly anisotropic Ising triangular-lattice antiferromagnet ($g_z$/$g_{xy}$$\sim$3) with very weak exchange interaction (J$\sim$0.22~K). For YbTa$_7$O$_{19}$, millimeter sized single crystals could be grown. The anisotropic magnetization and electron spin resonance data show that YbTa$_7$O$_{19}$ has a contrasting in-plane magnetic anisotropy with $g_z$/$g_{xy}$$\sim$0.67 similar as that of YbMgGaO$_4$. The above results indicate that CeTa$_7$O$_{19}$ and YbTa$_7$O$_{19}$ with pseudospin-1/2 ground states might either be quantum spin liquid candidate materials or find applications in adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration due to the weak exchange interaction.

Evidence for field induced quantum spin liquid behavior in a spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet

One of the most important issues in modern condensed matter physics is the realization of fractionalized excitations, such as the Majorana excitations in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. To this aim, the 3d-based Kitaev material Na2Co2TeO6 is a promising candidate whose magnetic phase diagram of B // a* contains a field-induced intermediate magnetically disordered phase within 7.5 T < |B| < 10 T. The experimental observations, including the restoration of the crystalline point group symmetry in the angle-dependent torque and the coexisting magnon excitations and spinon-continuum in the inelastic neutron scattering spectrum, provide strong evidence that this disordered phase is a field induced quantum spin liquid with partially polarized spins. Our variational Monte Carlo simulation with the effective K-J1-Γ-Γ'-J3 model reproduces the experimental data and further supports this conclusion.

Incommensurate Charge Super-modulation and Hidden Dipole Order in Layered Kitaev Material $α$-RuCl$_3$

The magnetism of Kitaev materials has been widely studied, but their charge properties and the coupling to other degrees of freedom are less known. Here we investigate the charge states of $α$-RuCl$_3$, a promising Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate, in proximity to graphite. We discover that few-layered $α$-RuCl$_3$ experiences a clear modulation of charge states, where a Mott-insulator to weak charge-transfer-insulator transition in the 2D limit occurs by means of heterointerfacial polarization. More notably, distinct signals of incommensurate charge and lattice super-modulations, regarded as an unconventional charge order, accompanied in the insulator. Our theoretical calculations have reproduced the incommensurate charge order by taking into account the antiferroelectricity of $α$-RuCl$_3$ that is driven by dipole order in the internal electric fields. The findings imply that there is strong coupling between the charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom in layered $α$-RuCl$_3$ in the heterostructure, which offers an opportunity to electrically access and tune its magnetic interactions inside the Kitaev compounds.

Low-energy spin dynamics in a Kitaev material Na3Ni2BiO6 investigated by NMR

We performed 23Na NMR and magnetization measurements on an S = 1, quasi-2D honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet Na3Ni2BiO6. A large positive Curie-Weiss constant of 22.9 K is observed. The NMR spectra at low fields are consistent with a "zigzag" magnetic order, indicating a large easy-axis anisotropy. With field applied along the c* axis, the NMR spectra confirm the existence of a 1/3-magnetization plateau phase between 5.1 T and 7.1 T. The transition from the zigzag order to the 1/3-magnetization plateau phase is also found to be a first-order type. A monotonic decrease of the spin gap is revealed in the 1/3-magnetization plateau phase, which reaches zero at a quantum critical field Hc = 8.35 T before entering the fully polarized phase. These data suggest the existence of exchange frustration in the system along with strong ferromagnetic interactions, hosting the possibility for Kitaev physics. Besides, well below the ordered phase, the 1/T1 at high fields shows either a level off or an enhancement upon cooling below 3 K, which suggests the existence of low-energy fluctuations.

NMR evidence of spinon localization in kagome antiferromagnet YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Br$_2$[Br$_{1-x}$(OH)$_x$]

We performed nuclear magnetic resonance studies on a kagome antiferromagnet YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Br$_2$[Br$_{1-x}$(OH)$_{x}$]. No significant NMR spectral broadening is found in the Br center peak from 1 K down to 0.05 K, indicating absence of static antiferromagnetic ordering. In contrast to signatures of dominant 2D kagome antiferromagnetic fluctuations at temperature above 30 K, both the Knight shift $K_{\rm{n}}$ and the spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ increase when the sample is cooled from 30 K to 8 K, which can be attributed to the scattering of spin excitations by strong non-magnetic impurities. Unusually, a hump is observed in $K_{\rm{n}}$ and $1/T_{2}$ close to 2 K (far below the exchange energy), which indicates the existence of excitations with a large density of states close to zero energy. These phenomena are reproduced by a mean-field simulation of Heisenberg model with bond-dependent exchange interactions, where the sign fluctuations in the spinon kinetic terms caused by impurities result in localization of spinons and an almost flat band close to the Fermi energy.

Field-induced quantum spin disordered state in spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet Na2Co2TeO6

Spin-orbit coupled honeycomb magnets with the Kitaev interaction have received a lot of attention due to their potential of hosting exotic quantum states including quantum spin liquids. Thus far, the most studied Kitaev systems are 4d/5d-based honeycomb magnets. Recent theoretical studies predicted that 3d-based honeycomb magnets, including Na2Co2TeO6 (NCTO), could also be a potential Kitaev system. Here, we have used a combination of heat capacity, magnetization, electron spin resonance measurements alongside inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study NCTO's quantum magnetism, and we have found a field-induced spin disordered state in an applied magnetic field range of 7.5 T < B (vertical to b-axis) < 10.5 T. The INS spectra were also simulated to tentatively extract the exchange interactions. As a 3d-magnet with a field-induced disordered state on an effective spin-1/2 honeycomb lattice, NCTO expands the Kitaev model to 3d compounds, promoting further interests on the spin-orbital effect in quantum magnets.

Abnormal Staebler-Wronski effect of amorphous silicon

Great achievements in last five years, such as record-efficient amorphous/crystalline silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells and cutting-edge perovskite/SHJ tandem solar cells, place hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) at the forefront of emerging photovoltaics. Due to the extremely low doping efficiency of trivalent boron (B) in amorphous tetravalent silicon, light harvesting of aforementioned devices are limited by their fill factors (FF), which is a direct metric of the charge carrier transport. It is challenging but crucial to develop highly conductive doped a-Si:H for minimizing the FF losses. Here we report intensive light soaking can efficiently boost the dark conductance of B-doped a-Si:H "thin" films, which is an abnormal Staebler-Wronski effect. By implementing this abnormal effect to SHJ solar cells, we achieve a certificated power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.18% (26.05% on designated area) with FF of 85.42% on a 244.63-cm2 wafer. This PCE is one of the highest reported values for total-area "top/rear" contact silicon solar cells. The FF reaches 98.30 per cent of its Shockley-Queisser limit.

Effective Model for Rare-earth Kitaev Materials and its Classical Monte Carlo Simulation

Recently, the family of rare-earth chalcohalides were proposed as candidate compounds to realize the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL). In the present work, we firstly propose an effective spin Hamiltonian consistents with the symmetry group of the crystal structure. Then we apply classical Monte Carlo simulations to preliminarily study the model and establish a phase diagram. When approaching to the low temperature limit, several magnetic long range orders are observed, including the stripe, the zigzag, the antiferromagnetic (AFM), the ferromagnetic (FM), the incommensurate spiral (IS), the Multi-$\pmb {Q}$ and the 120°. We further calculate the thermodynamic properties of the system, such as the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity. The ordering transition temperatures reflected in the two quantities agree with each other. For most interaction regions, the system is magnetically more susceptible in the $ab$-plane than in the $c$-direction. The stripe phase is special, where the susceptibility is fairly isotropic in the whole temperature region. These features provide useful information to understand the magnetic properties of related materials.

Two-dimensional Dirac nodal-line semimetal protected by symmetry

Dirac nodal line semimetals (DNLSs) host relativistic quasiparticles in their one-dimensional (1D) Dirac nodal line (DNL) bands that are protected by certain crystalline symmetries. Their novel low-energy fermion quasiparticle excitations and transport properties invite studies of relativistic physics in the solid state where their linearly dispersing Dirac bands cross at continuous lines with four-fold degeneracy. In materials studied up to now, the four-fold degeneracy, however, has been vulnerable to suppression by the ubiquitous spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Despite the current effort to discover 3D DNLSs that are robust to SOC by theory, positive experimental evidence is yet to emerge. In 2D DNLSs, because of the decreased total density of states as compared with their 3D counterparts, it is anticipated that their physical properties would be dominated by the electronic states defined by the DNL. It has been even more challenging, however, to discover robust 2D DNLSs against SOC because of their lowered symmetry; no such materials have yet been predicted by theory. By combining molecular beam epitaxy growth, STM, nc-AFM characterisation, with DFT calculations and space group theory analysis, here we reveal a novel class of 2D crystalline DNLSs that host the exact symmetry that protects them against SOC. The discovered quantum material is a brick phase 3-AL Bi(110), whose symmetry protection and thermal stability are imparted by the compressive vdW epitaxial growth on black phosphorus substrates. The BP substrate templates the growth of 3-AL Bi(110) nano-islands in a non-symmorphic space group structure. This crystalline symmetry protects the DNL electronic phase against SOC independent of any orbital or elemental factors. We theoretically establish that this intrinsic symmetry imparts a general, robust protection of DNL in a series of isostructural 2D quantum materials.

Symmetry guaranteed Dirac-line semimetals in two-dimensions against strong spin-orbit coupling

Several intriguing electronic phenomena and electric properties were discovered in three-dimensional Dirac nodal line semimetals (3D-DNLSM), which are, however, easy to be perturbed under strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). While two-dimensional (2D) layers are an emerging material category with many advantages, 2D-DNLSM against SOC is yet to be uncovered. Here, we report a 2D-DNLSM in odd-atomic-layer Bi (the brick phase, another Bi allotrope), whose robustness against SOC is protected by the little co-group C_2v \times Z^T_2, the unique protecting symmetry we found in 2D.Specially, (4n+2) valence electrons fill the electronic bands in the brick phase, so that the Dirac nodal line with fourfold degeneracy locates across the Fermi level. There are almost no other low energy states close to the Fermi level; this allows to feasibly observe the neat DNLSM-induced phenomena in transport measurements without being affected by other bands. In contrast, Other VA-group elements also form the brick phases, but their DNL states are mixed with the extra states around the Fermi level. This unprecedented category of layered materials allows for exploring nearly isolated 2DDNL states in 2D.

Gapless Spin Excitations in the Field-Induced Quantum Spin Liquid Phase of alpha-RuCl3

$α$-RuCl$_3$ is a leading candidate material for theobservation of physics related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). By combined susceptibility, specific-heat, and nuclear-magnetic-resonance measurements, we demonstrate that $α$-RuCl$_3$ undergoes a quantum phase transition to a QSL in a magnetic field of 7.5 T applied in the $ab$ plane. We show further that this high-field QSL phase has gapless spin excitations over a field range up to 16 T. This highly unconventional result, unknown in either Heisenberg or Kitaev magnets, offers insight essential to establishing the physics of $α$-RuCl$_3$.

High-pressure magnetization and NMR studies on $α$-RuCl$_3$

We report high-pressure magnetization and $^{35}$Cl NMR studies on $α$-RuCl$_3$ with pressure up to 1.5~GPa. At low pressures, the magnetic ordering is identified by both the magnetization data and the NMR data, where the $T_N$ shows a concave shape dependence with pressure. These data suggest stacking rearrangement along the $c$-axis. With increasing pressure, phase separation appears prominently at $P\ge$~0.45~GPa, and the magnetic volume fraction is completely suppressed at $P\ge$~1.05~GPa. Meanwhile, a phase-transition-like behavior emerges at high pressures in the remaining volume by a sharp drop of magnetization $M(T)$ upon cooling, with the transition temperature $T_x$ increased to ~250~K at 1~GPa. The $1/^{35}T_1$ is reduced by over three orders of magnitude when cooled below 100~K. This characterizes a high-pressure, low-temperature phase with nearly absent static susceptibility and low-energy spin fluctuations. The nature of the high-pressure ground state is discussed, where a magnetically disordered state is proposed as a candidate state.
