Evolution Models of CO WD -- AGB Star Merger Remnants

Common envelope evolution is a critical but still poorly understood phase in binary evolution. It plays a key role in forming close binaries such as hot subdwarfs, double white dwarfs, X-ray binaries, and double neutron stars. However, its outcomes remain highly uncertain. Depending on the efficiency of envelope ejection, a system may either survive as a close binary or undergo a complete merger. In this work, we investigate the post merger evolution of systems where a CO WD mergers with the core of an AGB star. A grid of merger remnant models with various core and envelope masses is constructed. At the onset of evolution, the CO core contracts and undergoes off-center carbon ignition, producing an inwardly propagating carbon flame. For remnants with relatively low mass of CO core, the flame phase is followed by core contraction and subsequent H-shell burning. For more massive CO cores, the carbon flame reaches the center and is soon followed by off-center neon burning, which is expected to eventually lead to core-collapse supernovae. The merger remnants occupy nearly the same region on HR diagram as ordinary AGB or super-AGB stars, exhibiting similar surface properties. Although their surface abundance may differ slightly from those of normal AGB stars depending on the initial core and envelope masses, these differences are strongly reduced once mass-loss is taken into account. We suggest that some giant-like stars, including candidates for Thorne-Zytkow objects (e.g., HV 2112), might alternatively be explained as AGB-WD merger remnants.

A Large-Language-Model Assisted Automated Scale Bar Detection and Extraction Framework for Scanning Electron Microscopic Images

Microscopic characterizations, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), are widely used in scientific research for visualizing and analyzing microstructures. Determining the scale bars is an important first step of accurate SEM analysis; however, currently, it mainly relies on manual operations, which is both time-consuming and prone to errors. To address this issue, we propose a multi-modal and automated scale bar detection and extraction framework that provides concurrent object detection, text detection and text recognition with a Large Language Model (LLM) agent. The proposed framework operates in four phases; i) Automatic Dataset Generation (Auto-DG) model to synthesize a diverse dataset of SEM images ensuring robust training and high generalizability of the model, ii) scale bar object detection, iii) information extraction using a hybrid Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system with DenseNet and Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network (CRNN) based algorithms, iv) an LLM agent to analyze and verify accuracy of the results. The proposed model demonstrates a strong performance in object detection and accurate localization with a precision of 100%, recall of 95.8%, and a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 99.2% at IoU=0.5 and 69.1% at IoU=0.5:0.95. The hybrid OCR system achieved 89% precision, 65% recall, and a 75% F1 score on the Auto-DG dataset, significantly outperforming several mainstream standalone engines, highlighting its reliability for scientific image analysis. The LLM is introduced as a reasoning engine as well as an intelligent assistant that suggests follow-up steps and verifies the results. This automated method powered by an LLM agent significantly enhances the efficiency and accuracy of scale bar detection and extraction in SEM images, providing a valuable tool for microscopic analysis and advancing the field of scientific imaging.

Helium-burning blue large-amplitude pulsators: A Population Study with BPASS

Blue Large-Amplitude Pulsators (BLAPs) are a class of radially pulsating stars with effective temperatures ranging from 20,000 to 35,000 K and pulsation periods between 7 and 75 minutes. This study utilizes the Binary Population and Spectral Synthesis (BPASS) code to investigate helium-burning stars as a formation channel for BLAPs in the Milky Way. The progenitor stars have initial masses of 3-6 $M_{\odot}$, resulting in BLAPs with final masses of 0.5-1.2 $M_{\odot}$. Based on a constant star formation rate of 3 $ M_{\odot}\text{yr}^{-1}$ and solar metallicity (Z = 0.020), population synthesis predicts approximately 14,351 helium-burning BLAPs in the Milky Way: 12,799 with Main Sequence (MS) companions and 1,551 with evolved/compact-object companions. Helium-burning BLAPs show prolonged lifetimes in the pulsation region and a narrow stellar age range for entering this regime (log(t/yr) = 8.0-8.6), unlike pre-white dwarf models. BLAPs with MS companions typically form via Roche lobe overflow, leading to longer orbital periods ($\sim$100 days). Those with evolved/compact-object companions form through common envelope evolution, resulting in shorter periods. While Galactic extinction makes most BLAPs faint (apparent magnitudes $>$ 25), future surveys like WFST and VRO LSST are expected to detect approximately 500-900. This research establishes helium-burning stars as a significant BLAP contributor and offers testable predictions regarding their binary properties and Galactic distribution.

Analysis of Radiation Level and Estimation of Protection Distance of γ Mobile Flaw Detection Source

Objective To analyze the radiation dose associated with gamma-ray mobile flaw detection, estimate the extent of the supervision and control areas, and assess the associated radiation risks. Methods A combination of theoretical calculations and actual measurements was used to compare and analyze the ambient equivalent dose rates of 192 Ir and 75 Se at their nominal source strengths. Measurements were conducted at distances of 1 m, 2 m, and 5 m from the radiation source. The extents of the control and supervision areas were estimated under three working scenarios: 1 without considering air attenuation, 2 considering air attenuation, and 3 after shielding by the flaw detection workpiece, using source activities of 3.7 * 10^10 Bq and 3.7 * 10^12Bq. Results Actual measurement of radiation dose of 192 Ir and 75 Se were measured under three different nominal activities. Theoretical calculation of radiation dose estimates at various distances were obtained for both nuclides, and the results showed that the theoretical values were basically consistent with the measured values. Conclusion The estimated scope of the supervision and control areas provided in this study can serve as a reference for flaw detection companies. Technicians can use these estimates to calculate appropriate distances for safety zones based on different nuclide activities. This enables flaw detection personnel to reduce the measurement scope on-site and to quickly and accurately define area boundaries.

Towards Resilient Federated Learning in CyberEdge Networks: Recent Advances and Future Trends

In this survey, we investigate the most recent techniques of resilient federated learning (ResFL) in CyberEdge networks, focusing on joint training with agglomerative deduction and feature-oriented security mechanisms. We explore adaptive hierarchical learning strategies to tackle non-IID data challenges, improving scalability and reducing communication overhead. Fault tolerance techniques and agglomerative deduction mechanisms are studied to detect unreliable devices, refine model updates, and enhance convergence stability. Unlike existing FL security research, we comprehensively analyze feature-oriented threats, such as poisoning, inference, and reconstruction attacks that exploit model features. Moreover, we examine resilient aggregation techniques, anomaly detection, and cryptographic defenses, including differential privacy and secure multi-party computation, to strengthen FL security. In addition, we discuss the integration of 6G, large language models (LLMs), and interoperable learning frameworks to enhance privacy-preserving and decentralized cross-domain training. These advancements offer ultra-low latency, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven network management, and improved resilience against adversarial attacks, fostering the deployment of secure ResFL in CyberEdge networks.

Binary Evolution Pathways to Blue Large-Amplitude Pulsators: Insights from HD 133729

Blue Large-Amplitude Pulsators (BLAPs) represent a recently identified class of pulsating stars distinguished by their short pulsation periods ($2 - 60$ minutes) and asymmetric light curves. This study investigated the evolutionary channel of HD 133729 which is the first confirmed BLAP in a binary system. Using the binary evolution code MESA, we explored various mass ratios and initial orbital periods. Our simulations suggest that a system with a mass ratio $q = 0.30$ undergoing non-conservative mass transfer ($β=0.15$) can reproduce the observed characteristics through the pre-white dwarf Roche lobe overflow channel. Meanwhile, we predict that there are significant helium and nitrogen enhancements on the surface of the main sequence (MS) star. The system will eventually undergo the common envelope phase, leading to a stellar merger. HD 133729 is a unique case as a benchmark, providing crucial insights into the formation mechanism and evolutionary fate of BLAPs with MS companions. This work constrains the elemental abundances of the MS star and has helped our understanding of non-conservative mass transfer in binary evolution.

He-accreting oxygen-neon white dwarfs and accretion-induced collapse events

It has been widely accepted that mass-accreting white dwarfs (WDs) are the progenitors of Type Ia supernovae or electron-capture supernovae. Previous work has shown that the accretion rate could affect the elemental abundance on the outer layers of CO WDs, and therefore affect the observational characteristics after they exploded as SNe Ia. However, it has not been well studied how elemental abundance changes on the outer layers of He-accreting ONe WDs as they approach the Chandrasekhar mass limit. In this paper, we investigated the evolution of He-accreting ONe WDs with MESA. We found that a CO-rich mantle will accumulate beneath the He layers resulting from the He burning, after which the ignition of the CO-rich mantle could transform carbon into silicon (Si). The amount of Si produced by carbon burning is strongly anti-correlated with the accretion rate. As the ONe WD nearly approaches the Chandrasekhar mass limit (Mch) through accretion, it is likely to undergo accretion-induced collapse (AIC), resulting in the formation of the neutron star (NS).

Light curves of the explosion of ONe WD+CO WD merger remnant and type Icn supernovae

Type Icn supernovae (SNe Icn) are a newly detected rare subtype of interacting stripped-envelope supernovae which show narrow P-Cygni lines of highly ionized carbon, oxygen, and neon in their early spectra due to the interactions of the SNe ejecta with dense hydrogen- and helium-deficient circumstellar material (CSM). It has been suggested that SNe Icn may have multiple progenitor channels, such as the explosion of carbon-rich Wolf-Rayet stars, or the explosion of stripped-envelope SNe which undergo binary interactions. Among the SNe Icn, SN 2019jc shows unique properties, and previous work inferred that it may stem from the ultra-stripped supernova, but other possibilities still exist. In this work, we aim to simulate the light curves from the explosions of oxygen-neon and carbon-oxygen double white dwarf (WD) merger remnants, and to further investigate whether the corresponding explosions can appear as some particular SNe Icn. We generate the light curves from the explosive remnants and analyse the influence of different parameters on the light curves, such as the ejecta mass, explosion energy, mass of Ni56 and CSM properties. Comparing our results with some SNe Icn, we found that the light curves from the explosions of double WD merger remnants can explain the observable properties of SN 2019jc, which inferred that this special SN Icn may have a different progenitor. Our results indicated that double WD merger may be an alternative model in producing at least one of the SNe Icn.

Multi-objective Generative Design of Three-Dimensional Composite Materials

Composite materials with 3D architectures are desirable in a variety of applications for the capability of tailoring their properties to meet multiple functional requirements. By the arrangement of materials' internal components, structure design is of great significance in tuning the properties of the composites. However, most of the composite structures are proposed by empirical designs following existing patterns. Hindered by the complexity of 3D structures, it is hard to extract customized structures with multiple desired properties from large design space. Here we report a multi-objective driven Wasserstein generative adversarial network (MDWGAN) to implement inverse designs of 3D composite structures according to given geometrical, structural and mechanical requirements. Our framework consists a GAN based network which generates 3D composite structures possessing with similar geometrical and structural features to the target dataset. Besides, multiple objectives are introduced to our framework for the control of mechanical property and isotropy of the composites. Real time calculation of the properties in training iterations is achieved by an accurate surrogate model. We constructed a small and concise dataset to illustrate our framework. With multiple objectives combined by their weight, and the 3D-GAN act as a soft constraint, our framework is proved to be capable of tuning the properties of the generated composites in multiple aspects, while keeping the selected features of different kinds of structures. The feasibility on small dataset and potential scalability on objectives of other properties make our work a novel, effective approach to provide fast, experience free composite structure designs for various functional materials.

Through the monitoring of wireless charging equipment, the radiation level and distribution of the electric field value and magnetic field value around the charging equipment is explored, to analyze the influence law of the electromagnetic environment. Method This paper introduces the principle and development status of electric vehicle charging, and analyzes the classification and methods of wireless charging. In this paper, the electric field and magnetic field of cars and minibuses are monitored, at positions such as: around the body, attenuation section, inside the car and inside the minibus. Result The range of electric field strength is 0.9 V/m to 48.1 V/m for cars, and 0.8 V/m to 74.7 V/m for minibuses. The electric field strength decays rapidly with the increase of the distance from the vehicle body, and the law is obvious. The range of magnetic induction intensity is 0.12μT-12.70μT for cars, and 0.15μT-27.06μT for minibuses. The magnetic induction intensity decays rapidly with the increase of the distance from the vehicle body, and the law is obvious. Conclusion This paper explores the radiation level and distribution of the electromagnetic field around this type of charging equipment. It is recommended that manufacturers of wireless charging devices for electric vehicles strengthen research on electromagnetic radiation shielding and take corresponding measures to control the level of electromagnetic radiation in areas accessible to the public.

The elastic properties of composites reinforced by a 3D Voronoi fibre network with or without missing fibres

Many composite materials, both natural and fabricated, process a Voronoi like architecture or microstructure. Furthermore, the stochasticity and connectivity of Voronoi tessellation endow the composite materials constructed by this kind of structures a wide range of desired properties including high and tuneable stiffness, high strength and good manufacturability. Thus, Voronoi-based fibre network structures are regarded as promising designs of composite reinforcements, as well as powerful tools in composite mechanics simulations. In this paper, the elastic properties of composites reinforced by a 3D Voronoi fibre network are systemically investigated based on the precise control of the Voronoi cell regularity. The regularity of the reinforcement fibre networks, according to our definition, is found positively related to the Young's moduli of the composites. Interestingly, 20% percent of defects in total reinforcement fibres only causes a less than 6.5% of Young's moduli drop in Voronoi fibre network reinforced composite. The Voronoi fibre network reinforced composites also shows higher Young's moduli than those of conventional composites with discrete reinforcements. The possibility of simulating aerogels by Voronoi fibre network structures are also presented.

Novel Improvement for Nonlinear Compatibility of Least Mean Square Adaptive Algorithm

In order to improve the least mean squares (LMS) adaptation algorithm to accommodate the nonlinear transfer function, and to adjust the coefficients of adaptive filter during the actual implement of bias voltage and signal amplitude, methods are proposed and simulated to develop a nonlinear adaptive filter. The inputs to LMS are replaced by the derivatives of traditional inputs, and the step for each training iteration is adaptively controlled by the difference between target signal and actual signal. The simulation utilizes the implementation of Nyquist pulses optical sampling and works as a digital signal processing pre-compensation to reduce influence of the frequency responses on wires and devices. The simulation result shows promising improvement with the modified adaptation algorithm method in tackling Mach Zehnder modulator's non-monotonic transfer function.

Conformation-Induced Stiffening Effect of Crosslinked Polymer Thin Films

Nanoscale polymeric thin films are widely used in diverse applications such as energy devices, flexible electronics and biosensors, where a satisfactory mechanical performance is of vital importance to realize their full functionality. It has been evidenced that the elastic properties of polymer films are often strongly affected by their thickness; however, the underlying mechanism of this phenomenon, especially a thorough understanding at the microscopic level, has yet to be achieved. Here we established a coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) based computational framework, combining with experimental verifications, aiming to reveal the conformational origin of the stiffening behavior of crosslinked polymeric thin films. By imposing systematic controls over the polymer network structures, we found that the bi-axial modulus changes are essentially consequent of the alteration of polymer conformations. A unified theory was then proposed, to quantitatively clarify the correlation between the elastic properties of the system and the distributional variations of the chain end-to-end distances, with predicting a significant hardening effect on top of the conventional entropic elasticity with largely uncoiled chains. Adopting processing protocols inspired by the modeling, our experiments showed that PDMS films at approximately the same thickness may exhibit a two order of magnitude difference in their moduli. The good agreement between experiments and simulations illustrated our findings as an effective guideline for tailoring the elastic properties of polymer films at nanoscale.

A system of state-dependent delay differential equation modelling forest growth I: semiflow properties

In this article we investigate the semiflow properties of a class of state-dependent delay differential equations which is motivated by some models describing the dynamics of the number of adult trees in forests. We investigate the existence and uniqueness of a semiflow in the space of Lipschitz and $C^1$ weighted functions. We obtain a blow-up result when the time approaches the maximal time of existence. We conclude the paper with an application of a spatially structured forest model.

Competition for light in forest population dynamics: from computer simulator to mathematical model

In this article we build a mathematical model for forest growth and we compare this model with a computer forest simulator named SORTIE. The main ingredient taken into account in both models is the competition for light between trees. The parameters of the mathematical model are estimated by using SORTIE model, when the parameter values of SORTIE model correspond to the ones previously evaluated for the Great Mountain Forest in USA. We construct a size structured population dynamics model with one and two species and with spatial structure.
