Joint Beamforming Optimization for Active STAR-RIS-Assisted ISAC Systems

In this paper, we investigate an active simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) assisted integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system, where the dual-function base station (DFBS) operates in full-duplex (FD) mode to provide communication services and performs targets sensing simultaneously. Meanwhile, we consider multiple targets and multiple users scenario as well as the self-interference at the FD DFBS. Through jointly optimizing the DFBS and active STAR-RIS beamforming under different work modes, our purpose is to achieve the maximum communication sum-rate, while satisfying the minimum radar signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraint, the active STAR-RIS hardware constraints and the total power constraint of DFBS and active STAR-RIS. To tackle the complex non-convex optimization problem formulated, an efficient alternating optimization algorithm is proposed. Specifically, the fractional programming method is first leveraged to turn the original problem into a more tractable one, and subsequently the transformed problem is decomposed into several sub-problems. Next, we develop a derivation method to obtain the closed-form expression of the radar receiving beamforming, and then the DFBS transmit beamforming is optimized under the radar SINR requirement and total power constraints. After that, the active STAR-RIS reflection and transmission beamforming are optimized by majorization minimization, complex circle manifold and convex optimization techniques. Finally, the proposed schemes are conducted through numerical simulations to show their benefits and efficiency.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Integrated Sensing and Communications for mmWave Channels

This paper proposes an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system operating at the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band. Specifically, the ISAC system combines communication and radar operations and performs, detecting and communicating simultaneously with multiple targets and users. The IRS dynamically controls the amplitude or phase of the radio signal via reflecting elements to reconfigure the radio propagation environment and enhance the transmission rate of the ISAC system. By jointly designing the radar signal covariance (RSC) matrix, the beamforming vector of the communication system, and the IRS phase shift, the ISAC system transmission rate can be improved while matching the desired waveform for radar. The problem is non-convex due to multivariate coupling, and thus we decompose it into two separate subproblems. First, a closed-form solution of the RSC matrix is derived from the desired radar waveform. Next, the quadratic transformation (QT) technique is applied to the subproblem, and then alternating optimization (AO) is employed to determine the communication beamforming vector and the IRS phase shift. For computing the IRS phase shift, we adopt both the majorization minimization (MM) and the manifold optimization (MO). Also, we derive a closed-form solution for the formulated problem, effectively decreasing computational complexity. Furthermore, a trade-off factor is introduced to balance the performance of communication and sensing. Finally, the simulations verify the effectiveness of the algorithm and demonstrate that the IRS can improve the performance of the ISAC system.

AI-enabled STAR-RIS aided MISO ISAC Secure Communications

A simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) aided integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) dual-secure communication system is studied in this paper. The sensed target and legitimate users (LUs) are situated on the opposite sides of the STAR-RIS, and the energy splitting and time switching protocols are applied in the STAR-RIS, respectively. The long-term average security rate for LUs is maximized by the joint design of the base station (BS) transmit beamforming and receive filter, along with the STAR-RIS transmitting and reflecting coefficients, under guarantying the echo signal-to-noise ratio thresholds and rate constraints for the LUs. Since the channel information changes over time, conventional convex optimization techniques cannot provide the optimal performance for the system, and result in excessively high computational complexity in the exploration of the long-term gains for the system. Taking continuity control decisions into account, the deep deterministic policy gradient and soft actor-critic algorithms based on off-policy are applied to address the complex non-convex problem. Simulation results comprehensively evaluate the performance of the proposed two reinforcement learning algorithms and demonstrate that STAR-RIS is remarkably better than the two benchmarks in the ISAC system.

Joint Beamforming Design for the STAR-RIS-Enabled ISAC Systems with Multiple Targets and Multiple Users

In this paper, the sensing beam pattern gain under simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RIS)-enabled integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems is investigated, in which multiple targets and multiple users exist. However, multiple targets detection introduces new challenges, since the STAR-RIS cannot directly send sensing beams and detect targets, the dual-functional base station (DFBS) is required to analyze the echoes of the targets. While the echoes reflected by different targets through STAR-RIS come from the same direction for the DFBS, making it impossible to distinguish them. To address the issue, we first introduce the signature sequence (SS) modulation scheme to the ISAC system, and thus, the DFBS can detect different targets by the SS-modulated sensing beams. Next, via the joint beamforming design of DFBS and STAR-RIS, we develop a maxmin sensing beam pattern gain problem, and meanwhile, considering the communication quality requirements, the interference limitations of other targets and users, the passive nature constraint of STAR-RIS, and the total transmit power limitation. Then, to tackle the complex non-convex problem, we propose an alternating optimization method to divide it into two quadratic semidefinite program subproblems and decouple the coupled variables. Drawing on mathematical transformation, semidefinite programming, as well as semidefinite relaxation techniques, these two subproblems are iteratively sloved until convergence, and the ultimate solutions are obtained. Finally, simulation results are conducted to validate the benefits and efficiency of our proposed scheme.

Adaptive-avg-pooling based Attention Vision Transformer for Face Anti-spoofing

Traditional vision transformer consists of two parts: transformer encoder and multi-layer perception (MLP). The former plays the role of feature learning to obtain better representation, while the latter plays the role of classification. Here, the MLP is constituted of two fully connected (FC) layers, average value computing, FC layer and softmax layer. However, due to the use of average value computing module, some useful information may get lost, which we plan to preserve by the use of alternative framework. In this work, we propose a novel vision transformer referred to as adaptive-avg-pooling based attention vision transformer (AAViT) that uses modules of adaptive average pooling and attention to replace the module of average value computing. We explore the proposed AAViT for the studies on face anti-spoofing using Replay-Attack database. The experiments show that the AAViT outperforms vision transformer in face anti-spoofing by producing a reduced equal error rate. In addition, we found that the proposed AAViT can perform much better than some commonly used neural networks such as ResNet and some other known systems on the Replay-Attack corpus.

Intelligent Reflective Surface Assisted Integrated Sensing and Wireless Power Transfer

Wireless sensing and wireless energy are enablers to pave the way for smart transportation and a greener future. In this paper, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted integrated sensing and wireless power transfer (ISWPT) system is investigated, where the transmitter in transportation infrastructure networks sends signals to sense multiple targets and simultaneously to multiple energy harvesting devices (EHDs) to power them. In light of the performance tradeoff between energy harvesting and sensing, we propose to jointly optimize the system performance via optimizing the beamforming and IRS phase shift. However, the coupling of optimization variables makes the formulated problem non-convex. Thus, an alternative optimization approach is introduced and based on which two algorithms are proposed to solve the problem. Specifically, the first one involves a semi-definite program technique, while the second one features a low-complexity optimization algorithm based on successive convex approximation and majorization minimization. Our simulation results validate the proposed algorithms and demonstrate the advantages of using IRS to assist wireless power transfer in ISWPT systems.

Sum Secrecy Rate Maximization for IRS-aided Multi-Cluster MIMO-NOMA Terahertz Systems

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising technique to extend the network coverage and improve spectral efficiency. This paper investigates an IRS-assisted terahertz (THz) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system based on hybrid precoding with the presence of eavesdropper. Two types of sparse RF chain antenna structures are adopted, i.e., sub-connected structure and fully connected structure. First, cluster heads are selected for each beam, and analog precoding based on discrete phase is designed. Then, users are clustered based on channel correlation, and NOMA technology is employed to serve the users. In addition, a low-complexity forced-zero method is utilized to design digital precoding in order to eliminate inter-cluster interference. On this basis, we propose a secure transmission scheme to maximize the sum secrecy rate by jointly optimizing the power allocation and phase shifts of IRS subject to the total transmit power budget, minimal achievable rate requirement of each user, and IRS reflection coefficients. Due to multiple coupled variables, the formulated problem leads to a non-convex issue. We apply the Taylor series expansion and semidefinite programming to convert the original non-convex problem into a convex one. Then, an alternating optimization algorithm is developed to obtain a feasible solution of the original problem. Simulation results verify the convergence of the proposed algorithm, and deploying IRS can bring significant beamforming gains to suppress the eavesdropping.

Machine Learning-based Beamforming Design for Millimeter Wave IRS Communications with Discrete Phase Shifters

In this paper, we investigate an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted millimeter-wave multiple-input single-output downlink wireless communication system. By jointly calculating the active beamforming at the base station and the passive beamforming at the IRS, we aim to minimize the transmit power under the constraint of each user' signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. To solve this problem, we propose a low-complexity machine learning-based cross-entropy (CE) algorithm to alternately optimize the active beamforming and the passive beamforming. Specifically, in the alternative iteration process, the zero-forcing (ZF) method and CE algorithm are applied to acquire the active beamforming and the passive beamforming, respectively. The CE algorithm starts with random sampling, by the idea of distribution focusing, namely shifting the distribution towards a desired one by minimizing CE, and a near optimal reflection coefficients with adequately high probability can be obtained. In addition, we extend the original one-bit phase shift at the IRS to the common case with high-resolution phase shift to enhance the effectiveness of the algorithms. Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm can obtain a near optimal solution with lower computational complexity.

A Unified Framework for IRS Enabled Wireless Powered Sensor Networks

This paper unveils the importance of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in a wireless powered sensor network (WPSN). Specifically, a multi-antenna power station (PS) employs energy beamforming to provide wireless charging for multiple Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which utilize the harvested energy to deliver their own messages to an access point (AP). Meanwhile, an IRS is deployed to enhance the performances of wireless energy transfer (WET) and wireless information transfer (WIT) by intelligently adjusting the phase shift of each reflecting element. To evaluate the performance of this IRS assisted WPSN, we are interested in maximizing its system sum throughput to jointly optimize the energy beamforming of the PS, the transmission time allocation, as well as the phase shifts of the WET and WIT phases. The formulated problem is not jointly convex due to the multiple coupled variables. To deal with its non-convexity, we first independently find the phase shifts of the WIT phase in closed-form. We further propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to iteratively solve the sum throughput maximization problem. To be specific, a semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation approach is adopted to design the energy beamforming and the time allocation for given phase shifts of WET phase, which is then optimized for given energy beamforming and time allocation. Moreover, we propose an AO low-complexity scheme to significantly reduce the computational complexity incurred by the SDP relaxation, where the optimal closed-form energy beamforming, time allocation, and phase shifts of the WET phase are derived. Finally, numerical results are demonstrated to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, and highlight the beneficial role of the IRS in comparison to the benchmark schemes.

Robust Design for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted MIMO-OFDMA Terahertz Communications

Recently, terahertz (THz) communication has drawn considerable attention as one of the promising technologies for the future wireless communications owning to its ultra-wide bandwidth. Nonetheless, one major obstacle that prevents the actual deployment of THz lies in its inherent huge attenuation. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) represent two effective solutions for compensating the large pathloss in THz systems. In this paper, we consider an IRS-aided multi-user THz MIMO system with orthogonal frequency division multiple access, where the sparse radio frequency chain antenna structure is adopted for reducing the power consumption. The objective is to maximize the weighted sum rate via jointly optimizing the hybrid analog/digital beamforming at the base station and reflection matrix at the IRS. {Since the analog beamforming and reflection matrix need to cater all users and subcarriers, it is difficult to directly solve the formulated problem, and thus, an alternatively iterative optimization algorithm is proposed.} Specifically, the analog beamforming is designed by solving a MIMO capacity maximization problem, while the digital beamforming and reflection matrix optimization are both tackled using semidefinite relaxation technique. Considering that obtaining perfect channel state information (CSI) is a challenging task in IRS-based systems, we further explore the case with the imperfect CSI for the channels from the IRS to users. Under this setup, we propose a robust beamforming and reflection matrix design scheme for the originally formulated non-convex optimization problem. Finally, simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Joint Beamforming And Power Splitting Design For C-RAN With Multicast Fronthaul

In this paper, we investigate the joint beamforming and power splitting design problem in a base station (BS) cluster-based cloud radio access network (C-RAN) with multicast fronthaul, where users are jointly served by BSs within each cluster. Meanwhile, each user can simultaneously obtain information and energy from received signals. On this basis, under predefined minimum harvested energy of each user and maximum transmit power of each BS and central processor, we formulate a sum rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing multicast fronthaul beamforming, cooperative access beamforming and power split ratios. Due to the difficulty in solving the formulated problem, we first transform it into a convex one by successive convex approximate and semidefinite program (SDP) relaxation techniques, and then propose an effective iterative algorithm. Moreover, we design a randomization method that can always obtain the rank-one solution. Finally, numerical results are conducted to validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm.

Energy Harvesting Fairness in AN-aided Secure MU-MIMO SWIPT Systems with Cooperative Jammer

In this paper, we study a multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output secrecy simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) channel which consists of one transmitter, one cooperative jammer (CJ), multiple energy receivers (potential eavesdroppers, ERs), and multiple co-located receivers (CRs). We exploit the dual of artificial noise (AN) generation for facilitating efficient wireless energy transfer and secure transmission. Our aim is to maximize the minimum harvested energy among ERs and CRs subject to secrecy rate constraints for each CR and total transmit power constraint. By incorporating norm-bounded channel uncertainty model, we propose a iterative algorithm based on sequential parametric convex approximation to find a near-optimal solution. Finally, simulation results are presented to validate the performance of the proposed algorithm outperforms that of the conventional AN-aided scheme and CJ-aided scheme.

AN-aided Secure Transmission in Multi-user MIMO SWIPT Systems

In this paper, an energy harvesting scheme for a multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) secrecy channel with artificial noise (AN) transmission is investigated. Joint optimization of the transmit beamforming matrix, the AN covariance matrix, and the power splitting ratio is conducted to minimize the transmit power under the target secrecy rate, the total transmit power, and the harvested energy constraints. The original problem is shown to be non-convex, which is tackled by a two-layer decomposition approach. The inner layer problem is solved through semi-definite relaxation, and the outer problem is shown to be a single-variable optimization that can be solved by one-dimensional (1-D) line search. To reduce computational complexity, a sequential parametric convex approximation (SPCA) method is proposed to find a near-optimal solution. Furthermore, tightness of the relaxation for the 1-D search method is validated by showing that the optimal solution of the relaxed problem is rank-one. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SPCA method achieves the same performance as the scheme based on 1-D search method but with much lower complexity.

Robust Designs of Beamforming and Power Splitting for Distributed Antenna Systems with Wireless Energy Harvesting

In this paper, we investigate a multiuser distributed antenna system with simultaneous wireless information and power transmission under the assumption of imperfect channel state information (CSI). In this system, a distributed antenna port with multiple antennas supports a set of mobile stations who can decode information and harvest energy simultaneously via a power splitter. To design robust transmit beamforming vectors and the power splitting (PS) factors in the presence of CSI errors, we maximize the average worst-case signal-to-interference-plus- noise ratio (SINR) while achieving individual energy harvesting constraint for each mobile station. First, we develop an efficient algorithm to convert the max-min SINR problem to a set of "dual" min-max power balancing problems. Then, motivated by the penalty function method, an iterative algorithm based on semi-definite programming (SDP) is proposed to achieve a local optimal rank-one solution. Also, to reduce the computational complexity, we present another iterative scheme based on the Lagrangian method and the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique to yield a suboptimal solution. Simulation results are shown to validate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Beamforming and Power Splitting Designs for AN-aided Secure Multi-user MIMO SWIPT Systems

The inner layer problem is solved through semi-definite relaxation, and the outer problem, on the other hand, is shown to be a single- variable optimization that can be solved by one-dimensional (1- D) line search. To reduce computational complexity, a sequential parametric convex approximation (SPCA) method is proposed to find a near-optimal solution. The work is then extended to the imperfect channel state information case with norm-bounded channel errors. Furthermore, tightness of the relaxation for the proposed schemes are validated by showing that the optimal solution of the relaxed problem is rank-one. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SPCA method achieves the same performance as the scheme based on 1-D but with much lower complexity.
