On Decentralized Linearly Separable Computation With the Minimum Computation Cost

The distributed linearly separable computation problem finds extensive applications across domains such as distributed gradient coding, distributed linear transform, real-time rendering, etc. In this paper, we investigate this problem in a fully decentralized scenario, where $\mathsf{N}$ workers collaboratively perform the computation task without a central master. Each worker aims to compute a linearly separable computation that can be manifested as $\mathsf{K}_{\mathrm{c}}$ linear combinations of $\mathsf{K}$ messages, where each message is a function of a distinct dataset. We require that each worker successfully fulfill the task based on the transmissions from any $\mathsf{N}_{\mathrm{r}}$ workers, such that the system can tolerate any $\mathsf{N}-\mathsf{N}_{\mathrm{r}}$ stragglers. We focus on the scenario where the computation cost (the number of uncoded datasets assigned to each worker) is minimum, and aim to minimize the communication cost (the number of symbols the fastest $\mathsf{N}_{\mathrm{r}}$ workers transmit). We propose a novel distributed computing scheme that is optimal under the widely used cyclic data assignment. Interestingly, we demonstrate that the side information at each worker is ineffective in reducing the communication cost when $\mathsf{K}_{\mathrm{c}}\leq {\mathsf{K}}\mathsf{N}_{\mathrm{r}}/{\mathsf{N}}$, while it helps reduce the communication cost as $\mathsf{K}_{\mathrm{c}}$ increases.

DeepRicci: Self-supervised Graph Structure-Feature Co-Refinement for Alleviating Over-squashing

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have shown great power for learning and mining on graphs, and Graph Structure Learning (GSL) plays an important role in boosting GNNs with a refined graph. In the literature, most GSL solutions either primarily focus on structure refinement with task-specific supervision (i.e., node classification), or overlook the inherent weakness of GNNs themselves (e.g., over-squashing), resulting in suboptimal performance despite sophisticated designs. In light of these limitations, we propose to study self-supervised graph structure-feature co-refinement for effectively alleviating the issue of over-squashing in typical GNNs. In this paper, we take a fundamentally different perspective of the Ricci curvature in Riemannian geometry, in which we encounter the challenges of modeling, utilizing and computing Ricci curvature. To tackle these challenges, we present a self-supervised Riemannian model, DeepRicci. Specifically, we introduce a latent Riemannian space of heterogeneous curvatures to model various Ricci curvatures, and propose a gyrovector feature mapping to utilize Ricci curvature for typical GNNs. Thereafter, we refine node features by geometric contrastive learning among different geometric views, and simultaneously refine graph structure by backward Ricci flow based on a novel formulation of differentiable Ricci curvature. Finally, extensive experiments on public datasets show the superiority of DeepRicci, and the connection between backward Ricci flow and over-squashing. Motif-aware Riemannian Graph Neural Network with Generative-Contrastive Learning

Graphs are typical non-Euclidean data of complex structures. In recent years, Riemannian graph representation learning has emerged as an exciting alternative to Euclidean ones. However, Riemannian methods are still in an early stage: most of them present a single curvature (radius) regardless of structural complexity, suffer from numerical instability due to the exponential/logarithmic map, and lack the ability to capture motif regularity. In light of the issues above, we propose the problem of \emph{Motif-aware Riemannian Graph Representation Learning}, seeking a numerically stable encoder to capture motif regularity in a diverse-curvature manifold without labels. To this end, we present a novel Motif-aware Riemannian model with Generative-Contrastive learning (MotifRGC), which conducts a minmax game in Riemannian manifold in a self-supervised manner. First, we propose a new type of Riemannian GCN (D-GCN), in which we construct a diverse-curvature manifold by a product layer with the diversified factor, and replace the exponential/logarithmic map by a stable kernel layer. Second, we introduce a motif-aware Riemannian generative-contrastive learning to capture motif regularity in the constructed manifold and learn motif-aware node representation without external labels. Empirical results show the superiority of MofitRGC.

Coded Caching Scheme for Partially Connected Linear Networks Via Multi-antenna Placement Delivery Array

In this paper, we study the coded caching scheme for the $(K,L,M_{\text{T}},M_{\text{U}},N)$ partially connected linear network, where there are $N$ files each of which has an equal size, $K+L-1$ transmitters and $K$ users; each user and transmitter caches at most $M_{\text{U}}$ and $M_{\text{T}}$ files respectively; each user cyclically communicates with $L$ transmitters. The goal is to design caching and delivery schemes to reduce the transmission latency measured by the metric normalized delivery time (NDT). By delicately designing the data placement of the transmitters and users according to the topology, we show that a combinatorial structure called multiple-antenna placement delivery array (MAPDA), which was originally proposed for the multiple-input single-output broadcast channels, can be also used to design schemes for the partially connected linear network. Then, based on existing MAPDAs and our constructing approach, we propose new schemes that achieve the optimal NDT when $ {M_\text{T}}+ {M_\text{U}}\geq N$ and smaller NDT than that of the existing schemes when (${M_\text{T}}+ {M_\text{U}}\leq N$, $\frac{M_\text{U}}{N}+\frac{M_\text{T}}{N} \frac{L}{K}\left\lceil \frac{K}{L} \right\rceil \geq 1$) or ($ {M_\text{U}}+ {M_\text{T}}< N, \frac{K}{L}\notin\mathbb{Z}^+$). Moreover, our schemes operate in one-shot linear delivery and significantly reduce the subpacketizations compared to the existing scheme, which implies that our schemes have a wider range of applications and lower complexity of implementation.

Coded Computing for Half-Duplex Wireless Distributed Computing Systems via Interference Alignment

Distributed computing frameworks such as MapReduce and Spark are often used to process large-scale data computing jobs. In wireless scenarios, exchanging data among distributed nodes would seriously suffer from the communication bottleneck due to limited communication resources such as bandwidth and power. To address this problem, we propose a coded parallel computing (CPC) scheme for distributed computing systems where distributed nodes exchange information over a half-duplex wireless interference network. The CPC scheme achieves the multicast gain by utilizing coded computing to multicast coded symbols {intended to} multiple receiver nodes and the cooperative transmission gain by allowing multiple {transmitter} nodes to jointly deliver messages via interference alignment. To measure communication performance, we apply the widely used latency-oriented metric: \emph{normalized delivery time (NDT)}. It is shown that CPC can significantly reduce the NDT by jointly exploiting the parallel transmission and coded multicasting opportunities. Surprisingly, when $K$ tends to infinity and the computation load is fixed, CPC approaches zero NDT while all state-of-the-art schemes achieve positive values of NDT. Finally, we establish an information-theoretic lower bound for the NDT-computation load trade-off over \emph{half-duplex} network, and prove our scheme achieves the minimum NDT within a multiplicative gap of $3$, i.e., our scheme is order optimal.

Bayesian Robust Tensor Ring Model for Incomplete Multiway Data

Robust tensor completion (RTC) aims to recover a low-rank tensor from its incomplete observation with outlier corruption. The recently proposed tensor ring (TR) model has demonstrated superiority in solving the RTC problem. However, the existing methods either require a pre-assigned TR rank or aggressively pursue the minimum TR rank, thereby often leading to biased solutions in the presence of noise. In this paper, a Bayesian robust tensor ring decomposition (BRTR) method is proposed to give more accurate solutions to the RTC problem, which can avoid exquisite selection of the TR rank and penalty parameters. A variational Bayesian (VB) algorithm is developed to infer the probability distribution of posteriors. During the learning process, BRTR can prune off slices of core tensor with marginal components, resulting in automatic TR rank detection. Extensive experiments show that BRTR can achieve significantly improved performance than other state-of-the-art methods.

Efficient Tensor Robust PCA under Hybrid Model of Tucker and Tensor Train

Tensor robust principal component analysis (TRPCA) is a fundamental model in machine learning and computer vision. Recently, tensor train (TT) decomposition has been verified effective to capture the global low-rank correlation for tensor recovery tasks. However, due to the large-scale tensor data in real-world applications, previous TRPCA models often suffer from high computational complexity. In this letter, we propose an efficient TRPCA under hybrid model of Tucker and TT. Specifically, in theory we reveal that TT nuclear norm (TTNN) of the original big tensor can be equivalently converted to that of a much smaller tensor via a Tucker compression format, thereby significantly reducing the computational cost of singular value decomposition (SVD). Numerical experiments on both synthetic and real-world tensor data verify the superiority of the proposed model.
