Multiple-distribution-function lattice Boltzmann method for convection-diffusion-system based incompressible Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, a multiple-distribution-function lattice Boltzmann method (MDF-LBM) with multiple-relaxation-time model is proposed for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (NSEs) which are considered as the coupled convection-diffusion equations (CDEs). Through direct Taylor expansion analysis, we show that the Navier-Stokes equations can be recovered correctly from the present MDF-LBM, and additionally, it is also found that the velocity and pressure can be directly computed through the zero and first-order moments of distribution function. Then in the framework of present MDF-LBM, we develop a locally computational scheme for the velocity gradient where the first-order moment of the non-equilibrium distribution is used, this scheme is also extended to calculate the velocity divergence, strain rate tensor, shear stress and vorticity. Finally, we also conduct some simulations to test the MDF-LBM, and find that the numerical results not only agree with some available analytical and numerical solutions, but also have a second-order convergence rate in space.

Trash to Treasure: Harvesting OOD Data with Cross-Modal Matching for Open-Set Semi-Supervised Learning

Open-set semi-supervised learning (open-set SSL) investigates a challenging but practical scenario where out-of-distribution (OOD) samples are contained in the unlabeled data. While the mainstream technique seeks to completely filter out the OOD samples for semi-supervised learning (SSL), we propose a novel training mechanism that could effectively exploit the presence of OOD data for enhanced feature learning while avoiding its adverse impact on the SSL. We achieve this goal by first introducing a warm-up training that leverages all the unlabeled data, including both the in-distribution (ID) and OOD samples. Specifically, we perform a pretext task that enforces our feature extractor to obtain a high-level semantic understanding of the training images, leading to more discriminative features that can benefit the downstream tasks. Since the OOD samples are inevitably detrimental to SSL, we propose a novel cross-modal matching strategy to detect OOD samples. Instead of directly applying binary classification, we train the network to predict whether the data sample is matched to an assigned one-hot class label. The appeal of the proposed cross-modal matching over binary classification is the ability to generate a compatible feature space that aligns with the core classification task. Extensive experiments show that our approach substantially lifts the performance on open-set SSL and outperforms the state-of-the-art by a large margin.

A diffuse-interface lattice Boltzmann method for fluid-particle interaction problems

In this paper, a diffuse-interface lattice Boltzmann method (DI-LBM) is developed for fluid-particle interaction problems. In this method, the sharp interface between the fluid and solid is replaced by a thin but nonzero thickness transition region named diffuse interface, where the physical variables varies continuously. In order to describe the diffuse interface, we introduce a smooth function, which is similar to the order parameter in phase-field model or the volume fraction of solid phase in the partially saturated lattice Boltzmann method (PS-LBM). In addition, to depict the fluid-particle interaction more accurately, a modified force term is also proposed and included in the evolution equation of the DI-LBM. Some classical problems are used to test the DI-LBM, and the results are in good agreement with some available theoretical and numerical works. Finally, it is also found that the DI-LBM is more efficient and accurate than the PS-LBM with the superposition model.

Discrete effects on some boundary schemes of multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model for convection-diffusion equations

In this paper, we perform a more general analysis on the discrete effects of some boundary schemes of the popular one- to three-dimensional DnQq multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model for convection-diffusion equation (CDE). Investigated boundary schemes include anti-bounce-back(ABB) boundary scheme, bounce-back(BB) boundary scheme and non-equilibrium extrapolation(NEE) boundary scheme. In the analysis, we adopt a transform matrix $\textbf{M}$ constructed by natural moments in the evolution equation, and the result of ABB boundary scheme is consistent with the existing work of orthogonal matrix $\textbf{M}$. We also find that the discrete effect does not rely on the choice of transform matrix, and obtain a relation to determine some of the relaxation-time parameters which can be used to eliminate the numerical slip completely under some assumptions. In this relation, the weight coefficient is considered as an adjustable parameter which makes the parameter adjustment more flexible. The relaxation factors associated with second moments can be used to eliminate the numerical slip of ABB boundary scheme and BB boundary scheme while the numerical slip can not be eliminated of NEE boundary scheme. Furthermore, we extend the relations to complex-valued CDE, several numerical examples are used to test the relations.

Rethinking BiSeNet For Real-time Semantic Segmentation

BiSeNet has been proved to be a popular two-stream network for real-time segmentation. However, its principle of adding an extra path to encode spatial information is time-consuming, and the backbones borrowed from pretrained tasks, e.g., image classification, may be inefficient for image segmentation due to the deficiency of task-specific design. To handle these problems, we propose a novel and efficient structure named Short-Term Dense Concatenate network (STDC network) by removing structure redundancy. Specifically, we gradually reduce the dimension of feature maps and use the aggregation of them for image representation, which forms the basic module of STDC network. In the decoder, we propose a Detail Aggregation module by integrating the learning of spatial information into low-level layers in single-stream manner. Finally, the low-level features and deep features are fused to predict the final segmentation results. Extensive experiments on Cityscapes and CamVid dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by achieving promising trade-off between segmentation accuracy and inference speed. On Cityscapes, we achieve 71.9% mIoU on the test set with a speed of 250.4 FPS on NVIDIA GTX 1080Ti, which is 45.2% faster than the latest methods, and achieve 76.8% mIoU with 97.0 FPS while inferring on higher resolution images.

Feature Decomposition and Reconstruction Learning for Effective Facial Expression Recognition

In this paper, we propose a novel Feature Decomposition and Reconstruction Learning (FDRL) method for effective facial expression recognition. We view the expression information as the combination of the shared information (expression similarities) across different expressions and the unique information (expression-specific variations) for each expression. More specifically, FDRL mainly consists of two crucial networks: a Feature Decomposition Network (FDN) and a Feature Reconstruction Network (FRN). In particular, FDN first decomposes the basic features extracted from a backbone network into a set of facial action-aware latent features to model expression similarities. Then, FRN captures the intra-feature and inter-feature relationships for latent features to characterize expression-specific variations, and reconstructs the expression feature. To this end, two modules including an intra-feature relation modeling module and an inter-feature relation modeling module are developed in FRN. Experimental results on both the in-the-lab databases (including CK+, MMI, and Oulu-CASIA) and the in-the-wild databases (including RAF-DB and SFEW) show that the proposed FDRL method consistently achieves higher recognition accuracy than several state-of-the-art methods. This clearly highlights the benefit of feature decomposition and reconstruction for classifying expressions.

A lattice Boltzmann model for the coupled cross-diffusion-fluid system

In this paper, we propose a lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for the generalized coupled cross-diffusion-fluid system. Through the direct Taylor expansion method, the proposed LB model can correctly recover the macroscopic equations. The cross diffusion terms in the coupled system are modeled by introducing additional collision operators, which can be used to avoid special treatments for the gradient terms. In addition, the auxiliary source terms are constructed properly such that the numerical diffusion caused by the convection can be eliminated. We adopt the developed LB model to study two important systems, i.e., the coupled chemotaxis-fluid system and the double-diffusive convection system with Soret and Dufour effects. We first test the present LB model through considering a steady-state case of coupled chemotaxis-fluid system, then we analyze the influences of some physical parameters on the formation of sinking plumes. Finally, the double-diffusive natural convection system with Soret and Dufour effects is also studied, and the numerical results agree well with some previous works.

A multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model based four-level finite-difference scheme for one-dimensional diffusion equation

In this paper, we first present a multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann (MRT-LB) model for one-dimensional diffusion equation where the D1Q3 (three discrete velocities in one-dimensional space) lattice structure is considered. Then through the theoretical analysis, we derive an explicit four-level finite-difference scheme from this MRT-LB model. The results show that the four-level finite-difference scheme is unconditionally stable, and through adjusting the weight coefficient $ω_{0}$ and the relaxation parameters $s_1$ and $s_2$ corresponding to the first and second moments, it can also have a sixth-order accuracy in space. Finally, we also test the four-level finite-difference scheme through some numerical simulations, and find that the numerical results are consistent with our theoretical analysis.

Free-Form Image Inpainting via Contrastive Attention Network

Most deep learning based image inpainting approaches adopt autoencoder or its variants to fill missing regions in images. Encoders are usually utilized to learn powerful representational spaces, which are important for dealing with sophisticated learning tasks. Specifically, in image inpainting tasks, masks with any shapes can appear anywhere in images (i.e., free-form masks) which form complex patterns. It is difficult for encoders to capture such powerful representations under this complex situation. To tackle this problem, we propose a self-supervised Siamese inference network to improve the robustness and generalization. It can encode contextual semantics from full resolution images and obtain more discriminative representations. we further propose a multi-scale decoder with a novel dual attention fusion module (DAF), which can combine both the restored and known regions in a smooth way. This multi-scale architecture is beneficial for decoding discriminative representations learned by encoders into images layer by layer. In this way, unknown regions will be filled naturally from outside to inside. Qualitative and quantitative experiments on multiple datasets, including facial and natural datasets (i.e., Celeb-HQ, Pairs Street View, Places2 and ImageNet), demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in generating high-quality inpainting results.

Query Twice: Dual Mixture Attention Meta Learning for Video Summarization

Video summarization aims to select representative frames to retain high-level information, which is usually solved by predicting the segment-wise importance score via a softmax function. However, softmax function suffers in retaining high-rank representations for complex visual or sequential information, which is known as the Softmax Bottleneck problem. In this paper, we propose a novel framework named Dual Mixture Attention (DMASum) model with Meta Learning for video summarization that tackles the softmax bottleneck problem, where the Mixture of Attention layer (MoA) effectively increases the model capacity by employing twice self-query attention that can capture the second-order changes in addition to the initial query-key attention, and a novel Single Frame Meta Learning rule is then introduced to achieve more generalization to small datasets with limited training sources. Furthermore, the DMASum significantly exploits both visual and sequential attention that connects local key-frame and global attention in an accumulative way. We adopt the new evaluation protocol on two public datasets, SumMe, and TVSum. Both qualitative and quantitative experiments manifest significant improvements over the state-of-the-art methods.

Reference-guided Face Component Editing

Face portrait editing has achieved great progress in recent years. However, previous methods either 1) operate on pre-defined face attributes, lacking the flexibility of controlling shapes of high-level semantic facial components (e.g., eyes, nose, mouth), or 2) take manually edited mask or sketch as an intermediate representation for observable changes, but such additional input usually requires extra efforts to obtain. To break the limitations (e.g. shape, mask or sketch) of the existing methods, we propose a novel framework termed r-FACE (Reference-guided FAce Component Editing) for diverse and controllable face component editing with geometric changes. Specifically, r-FACE takes an image inpainting model as the backbone, utilizing reference images as conditions for controlling the shape of face components. In order to encourage the framework to concentrate on the target face components, an example-guided attention module is designed to fuse attention features and the target face component features extracted from the reference image. Through extensive experimental validation and comparisons, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

A finite-difference lattice Boltzmann model with second-order accuracy of time and space for incompressible flow

In this paper, a kind of finite-difference lattice Boltzmann method with the second-order accuracy of time and space (T2S2-FDLBM) is proposed. In this method, a new simplified two-stage fourth order time-accurate discretization approach is applied to construct time marching scheme, and the spatial gradient operator is discretized by a mixed difference scheme to maintain a second-order accuracy both in time and space. It is shown that the previous finite-difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM) proposed by Guo [1] is a special case of the T2S2-FDLBM. Through the von Neumann analysis, the stability of the method is analyzed and two specific T2S2-FDLBMs are discussed. The two T2S2-FDLBMs are applied to simulate some incompressible flows with the non-uniform grids. Compared with the previous FDLBM and SLBM, the T2S2-FDLBM is more accurate and more stable. The value of the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy condition number in our method can be up to 0.9, which also significantly improves the computational efficiency.

A block triple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model for nonlinear anisotropic convection-diffusion equations

A block triple-relaxation-time (B-TriRT) lattice Boltzmann model for general nonlinear anisotropic convection-diffusion equations (NACDEs) is proposed, and the Chapman-Enskog analysis shows that the present B-TriRT model can recover the NACDEs correctly. There are some striking features of the present B-TriRT model: firstly, the relaxation matrix of B-TriRT model is partitioned into three relaxation parameter blocks, rather than a diagonal matrix in general multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) model; secondly, based on the analysis of half-way bounce-back (HBB) scheme for Dirichlet boundary conditions, we obtain an expression to determine the relaxation parameters; thirdly, the anisotropic diffusion tensor can be recovered by the relaxation parameter block that corresponds to the first-order moment of non-equilibrium distribution function. A number of simulations of isotropic and anisotropic convection-diffusion equations are conducted to validate the present B-TriRT model. The results indicate that the present model has a second-order accuracy in space, and is also more accurate and more stable than some available lattice Boltzmann models.

Lattice Boltzmann simulations of melting in a rectangular cavity heated locally from below at high Rayleigh number

This work presented a block triple-relaxation-time (B-TriRT) lattice Boltzmann model for simulating melting in a rectangular cavity heated from below at high Rayleigh (Ra) number (Ra = 108). The test of benchmark problem shows that present B-TriRT can dramatically reduce the numerical diffusion across the phase interface. In addition, the influences of the location of the heated region are investigated. The results indicate that the location of heated region plays an essential role in melting rate and the full melting occur earliest when the heated region is located in the middle region.

Grand Challenge of 106-Point Facial Landmark Localization

Facial landmark localization is a very crucial step in numerous face related applications, such as face recognition, facial pose estimation, face image synthesis, etc. However, previous competitions on facial landmark localization (i.e., the 300-W, 300-VW and Menpo challenges) aim to predict 68-point landmarks, which are incompetent to depict the structure of facial components. In order to overcome this problem, we construct a challenging dataset, named JD-landmark. Each image is manually annotated with 106-point landmarks. This dataset covers large variations on pose and expression, which brings a lot of difficulties to predict accurate landmarks. We hold a 106-point facial landmark localization competition1 on this dataset in conjunction with IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME) 2019. The purpose of this competition is to discover effective and robust facial landmark localization approaches.

Discrete unified gas kinetic scheme for nonlinear convection-diffusion equations

In this paper, we develop a discrete unified gas kinetic scheme (DUGKS) for general nonlinear convection-diffusion equation (NCDE), and show that the NCDE can be recovered correctly from the present model through the Chapman-Enskog analysis. We then test the present DUGKS through some classic convection-diffusion equations, and find that the numerical results are in good agreement with analytical solutions and the DUGKS model has a second-order convergence rate. Finally, as a finite-volume method, DUGKS can also adopt the non-uniform mesh. Besides, we performed some comparisons among the DUGKS, finite-volume lattice Boltzmann model (FV-LBM), single-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model (SLBM) and multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model (MRT-LBM). The results show that the DUGKS model is more accurate than FV-LBM, more stable than SLBM, and almost has the same accuracy as the MRT-LBM. Besides, the using of non-uniform mesh may make DUGKS model more flexible.

Generalized lattice Boltzmann method: Modeling, analysis, and elements

In this paper, we first present a unified framework for the modelling of generalized lattice Boltzmann method (GLBM). We then conduct a comparison of the four popular analysis methods (Chapman-Enskog analysis, Maxwell iteration, direct Taylor expansion and recurrence equations approaches) that have been used to obtain the macroscopic Navier-Stokes equations and nonlinear convection-diffusion equations from the GLBM, and show that from mathematical point of view, these four analysis methods are equivalent to each other. Finally, we give some elements that are needed in the implementation of the GLBM, and also find that some available LB models can be obtained from this GLBM.

Phase-field-based lattice Boltzmann model for immiscible incompressible N-phase flows

In this paper, we develop an efficient lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for simulating immiscible incompressible $N$-phase flows $(N \geq 2)$ based on the Cahn-Hilliard phase field theory. In order to facilitate the design of LB model and reduce the calculation of the gradient term, the governing equations of the $N$-phase system are reformulated, and they satisfy the conservation of mass, momentum and the second law of thermodynamics. In the present model, $(N-1)$ LB equations are employed to capture the interface, and another LB equation is used to solve the Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations, where a new distribution function for the total force is delicately designed to reduce the calculation of the gradient term. The developed model is first validated by two classical benchmark problems, including the tests of static droplets and the spreading of a liquid lens, the simulation results show that the current LB model is accurate and efficient for simulating incompressible $N$-phase fluid flows. To further demonstrate the capability of the LB model, two numerical simulations, including dynamics of droplet collision for four fluid phases and dynamics of droplets and interfaces for five fluid phases, are performed to test the developed model. The results show that the present model can successfully handle complex interactions among $N$ ($N \geq 2$) immiscible incompressible flows.
