TeachUp: Facilitating Early-Stage Teachers to Learn Instructional Strategies from Classroom Videos with Reflective Support

Recorded videos of offline open classes provide good examples for early-stage teachers to learn instructional strategies, e.g., how to organize cooperative learning. However, learning by watching these videos is challenging, as these strategies are implicitly performed, and it lacks in-situ reflective support. In this paper, via a formative study (N=9), we design TeachUp to support the learning of instructional strategies from classroom teaching videos. TeachUp adopts an LLM-powered pipeline to detect nine instructional strategies in videos (precision = 63.4%), provides reflective questions and hints while watching, and generates customized practices with reflective feedback. A within-subjects study (N=16) shows that compared to a traditional video-playing and self-practicing baseline, early-stage teachers with TeachUp are more engaged in learning and perform better in applying learned strategies to new tasks. Interviews with four in-service teachers further generalize our findings and TeachUp's use cases. We discuss practical implications for fostering video-based learning of instructional strategies.

Associations Between Support-Seekers' Cross-Community Interactions and Their Engagement with Received Comments in Online Health Communities

Support-seekers' active engagement with received comments, e.g., showing positive sentiment and willingness to improve in the replies, can indicate the success of online health communities (OHCs). Their participation in other communities may correlate with their engagement in OHCs but remains under-explored. This paper analyzes 26, 725 seekers' behaviors in the other 40, 479 communities and their associations with seekers' engagement with received comments under their 78, 501 posts in 30 Baidu Tieba OHCs. We found that seekers primarily posted in other communities that are also health-related (25.3%), followed by those about games and entertainment (e.g., Dota, 20.8%). Seekers who posted in other communities about health (26.3%) or personal issues (e.g., saving money, 20.7%) before had relatively higher probabilities of subsequently posting in the 30 OHCs we identified, but this posting experience was associated with fewer replies and less expressed willingness to improve based on received comments. We provide insights into fostering seekers' engagement in OHCs based on cross-community interactions.

Understanding Fortunetelling with Large Language Models in China: User Practices, Perceptions, and Impacts on Beliefs and Decisions

Fortunetelling is a cultural practice for navigating uncertainty, often associated with people's beliefs and decisions. Fortunetelling with recent large language models (LLMs) introduces new opportunities and risks. This paper conducts qualitative studies to understand users' practices, perceptions, and impacts of LLM fortunetelling in China. We first analyze 1,045 posts on Chinese social media, yielding a comprehensive taxonomy of the diverse foretold topics (e.g., career, romance), emotion reactions (e.g., surprise, worry), and perceived credibility (e.g., doubt, trust) of LLM fortunetelling. Then, we conduct interviews with 20 users of LLM fortunetelling. The findings indicate that users treat LLM fortunetelling as a tool less for accurate prediction but more for emotional support. While the fortunetelling results rarely change users' initial beliefs or decisions, they are associated with subtle mindset shifts, with some users reporting small behavioral adjustments. We discuss implications for gaining benefits from LLM fortunetelling.

Same Stories, Different Journeys: From Social Comparison to Sensemaking in AI-Mediated Peer Career Exploration

Young job seekers frequently turn to social media to compare themselves with peers and make sense of career possibilities. However, passive feed browsing creates a paradox: the authentic peer content that provides emotional grounding also triggers potentially detrimental upward social comparison and cognitive overload. Previous work has either structured online user-generated content to reduce noise without changing the passive browsing modality, or built AI-powered career exploration systems that disregard authentic human experiences. To address this gap, we developed JobMate, an interactive system that transforms real social media career posts into persona-grounded conversational AI agents, shifting the interaction from passive scrolling to active, personalized dialogue. We conducted a between-subjects study ($N$ = 24, three disciplines) comparing JobMate with native RedNote browsing. Our study shows that JobMate's AI-mediated dialogue redirected social comparison from potentially detrimental upward comparison toward constructive self-reframing, while promoting sensemaking through active conversational engagement. However, users still relied on the authenticity of real peer content for emotional grounding. We discuss design implications for AI systems that augment authentic online user-generated content consumption across social comparison contexts.

CoNewsReader: Supporting Comprehensive Understanding and Raising Critical Thoughts on Social Media News Through Comments

Critical news reading (CNR), which requires grasping the holistic ideas of and raising critical thoughts on the news, is beneficial yet challenging for general people who usually get information on daily social media. Comments under the news can aid CNR by providing complementary information and other readers' diverse and critical thoughts. However, it is under-investigated how to leverage these comments to support users in CNR. In this paper, we first derive user requirements for a comment-based CNR tool from literature and a formative study (N=12). Then, we develop CoNewsReader, a comment-based interactive CNR tool powered by a large language model. CoNewsReader supports users in grasping the news idea with complementary information from comments, filtering useful comments for CNR, and getting questions generated based on the comments to conduct critical thinking. Our within-subjects study with 24 university students indicates that compared to a baseline news reading interface in social media, participants with CoNewsReader have a more engaging CNR experience and perform better on comprehending the news and raising critical thoughts. We discuss design considerations for supporting reading tasks with user- and machine-generated content.

ConSearcher: Supporting Conversational Information Seeking in Online Communities with Member Personas

Many people browse online communities to learn from others' experiences and opinions, e.g., for constructing travel plans. Conversational search powered by large language models (LLMs) could ease this information-seeking task, but it remains under-investigated within the online community. In this paper, we first conducted an exploratory study (N=10) that indicated the helpfulness of a classic conversational search tool and identified room for improvement. Then, we proposed ConSearcher, an LLM-powered tool with dynamically generated member personas based on user queries to facilitate conversational search in the community. In ConSearcher, users can clarify their interests by checking what a simulated member similar to them may ask and get responses from diverse members' perspectives. A within-subjects study (N=27) showed that compared to two conversational search baselines, ConSearcher led to significantly higher information-seeking outcome and user engagement but raised concerns about over-personalization. We discuss implications for supporting conversational information seeking in online communities.

InkIdeator: Supporting Chinese-Style Visual Design Ideation via AI-Infused Exploration of Chinese Paintings

Visual designers often seek inspiration from Chinese paintings when tasked with creating Chinese-style illustrations, posters, etc. Our formative study (N=10) reveals that during ideation, designers learn the cultural symbols, emotions, compositions, and styles in Chinese paintings but face challenges in searching, analyzing, and integrating these dimensions. This paper leverages multi-modal large models to annotate the value of each dimension in 16,315 Chinese paintings, built on which we propose InkIdeator, an ideation support system for Chinese-style visual designs. InkIdeator suggests cultural symbols associated with the task theme, provides dimensional keywords to help analyze Chinese paintings, and generates visual examples integrating user-selected keywords. Our within-subjects study (N=12) using a baseline system without extracted dimensional keywords, along with two extended use cases by Chinese painters, indicates InkIdeator's effectiveness in creative ideation support, helping users efficiently explore cultural dimensions in Chinese paintings and visualize their ideas. We discuss implications for supporting culture-related visual design ideation with generative AI.

Exploring Community-Powered Conversational Agent for Health Knowledge Acquisition: A Case Study in Colorectal Cancer

Online communities have become key platforms where young adults, actively seek and share information, including health knowledge. However, these users often face challenges when browsing these communities, such as fragmented content, varying information quality and unfamiliar terminology. Based on a survey with 56 participants and follow-up interviews, we identify common challenges and expected features for learning health knowledge. In this paper, we develop a computational workflow that integrates community content into a conversational agent named CanAnswer to facilitate health knowledge acquisition. Using colorectal cancer as a case study, we evaluate CanAnswer through a lab study with 24 participants and interviews with six medical experts. Results show that CanAnswer improves the recalled gained knowledge and reduces the task workload of the learning session. Our expert interviews (N=6) further confirm the reliability and usefulness of CanAnswer. We discuss the generality of CanAnswer and provide design considerations for enhancing the usefulness and credibility of community-powered learning tools.

Designing AI-Infused Interactive Systems for Online Communities: A Systematic Literature Review

AI-infused systems have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in addressing diverse human needs within online communities. Their widespread adoption has shaped user experiences and community dynamics at scale. However, designing such systems requires a clear understanding of user needs, careful design decisions, and robust evaluation. While research on AI-infused systems for online communities has flourished in recent years, a comprehensive synthesis of this space remains absent. In this work, we present a systematic review of 77 studies, analyzing the systems they propose through three lenses: the challenges they aim to address, their design functionalities, and the evaluation strategies employed. The first two dimensions are organized around four core aspects of community participation: contribution, consumption, mediation, and moderation. Our analysis identifies common design and evaluation patterns, distills key design considerations, and highlights opportunities for future research on AI-infused systems in online communities.

ReviseMate: Exploring Contextual Support for Digesting STEM Paper Reviews

Effectively assimilating and integrating reviewer feedback is crucial for researchers seeking to refine their papers and handle potential rebuttal phases in academic venues. However, traditional review digestion processes present challenges such as time consumption, reading fatigue, and the requisite for comprehensive analytical skills. Prior research on review analysis often provides theoretical guidance with limited targeted support. Additionally, general text comprehension tools overlook the intricate nature of comprehensively understanding reviews and lack contextual assistance. To bridge this gap, we formulated research questions to explore the authors' concerns and methods for enhancing comprehension during the review digestion phase. Through interviews and the creation of storyboards, we developed ReviseMate, an interactive system designed to address the identified challenges. A controlled user study (N=31) demonstrated the superiority of ReviseMate over baseline methods, with positive feedback regarding user interaction. Subsequent field deployment (N=6) further validated the effectiveness of ReviseMate in real-world review digestion scenarios. These findings underscore the potential of interactive tools to significantly enhance the assimilation and integration of reviewer feedback during the manuscript review process.

"Here Comes the Makeup Tutorial You Asked For!": Exploring Communication Strategies and Viewer Engagement in Beauty Videos on Rednote

More and more people, especially females, create and view beauty videos covering topics like makeup tutorials and vlogs on social media platforms. Understanding the communication strategies that creators use in these videos and how they affect viewers' engagement can help spread beauty knowledge. By coding 352 beauty videos in Rednote, this study presents a comprehensive taxonomy of communication strategies used by the creators, such as using home as the video background and displaying makeup effects when starting the narrative at the beginning. We further label and computationally classify six categories of comments that reveal viewers' engagement with beauty videos. The regression analyses reveal the effects of beauty video communication strategies on viewers' engagement; for example, calling viewers to take action at the end tends to attract more comments that debate the product's efficacy. We discuss insights into fostering the creation of beauty videos and the communication of beauty knowledge.

Exploring the Usage of Generative AI for Group Project-Based Offline Art Courses in Elementary Schools

The integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in K-6 project-based art courses presents both opportunities and challenges for enhancing creativity, engagement, and group collaboration. This study introduces a four-phase field study, involving in total two experienced K-6 art teachers and 132 students in eight offline course sessions, to investigate the usage and impact of GenAI. Specifically, based on findings in Phases 1 and 2, we developed AskArt, an interactive interface that combines DALL-E and GPT and is tailored to support elementary school students in their art projects, and deployed it in Phases 3 and 4. Our findings revealed the benefits of GenAI in providing background information, inspirations, and personalized guidance. However, challenges in query formulation for generating expected content were also observed. Moreover, students employed varied collaboration strategies, and teachers noted increased engagement alongside concerns regarding misuse and interface suitability. This study offers insights into the effective integration of GenAI in elementary education, presents AskArt as a practical tool, and provides recommendations for educators and researchers to enhance project-based learning with GenAI technologies.

VChatter: Exploring Generative Conversational Agents for Simulating Exposure Therapy to Reduce Social Anxiety

Many people struggle with social anxiety, feeling fear, or even physically uncomfortable in social situations like talking to strangers. Exposure therapy, a clinical method that gradually and repeatedly exposes individuals to the source of their fear and helps them build coping mechanisms, can reduce social anxiety but traditionally requires human therapists' guidance and constructions of situations. In this paper, we developed a multi-agent system VChatter to explore large language models(LLMs)-based conversational agents for simulating exposure therapy with users. Based on a survey study (N=36) and an expert interview, VChatter includes an Agent-P, which acts as a psychotherapist to design the exposure therapy plans for users, and two Agent-Hs, which can take on different interactive roles in low, medium, and high exposure scenarios. A six-day qualitative study (N=10) showcases VChatter's usefulness in reducing users' social anxiety, feelings of isolation, and avoidance of social interactions. We demonstrated the feasibility of using LLMs-based conversational agents to simulate exposure therapy for addressing social anxiety and discussed future concerns for designing agents tailored to social anxiety.

Redesign of Online Design Communities: Facilitating Personalized Visual Design Learning with Structured Comments

Online Design Communities (ODCs) offer various artworks with members' comments for beginners to learn visual design. However, as identified by our Formative Study (N = 10), current ODCs lack features customized for personal learning purposes, e.g., searching artworks and digesting useful comments to learn design principles about buttons. In this paper, we present DesignLearner, a redesigned interface of ODCs to facilitate personalized visual design learning with comments structured based on UI components (e.g., button, text) and visual elements (e.g., color, contrast). In DesignLearner, learners can specify the UI components and visual elements that they wish to learn to filter artworks and associated comments. They can interactively read comments on an artwork, take notes, and get suggestions for the next artworks to explore. Our between-subjects study (N = 24) indicates that compared to a traditional ODC interface, DesignLearner can improve the user learning outcome and is deemed significantly more useful. We conclude with design considerations for customizing the interface of online communities to satisfy users' learning needs.

LitLinker: Supporting the Ideation of Interdisciplinary Contexts with Large Language Models for Teaching Literature in Elementary Schools

Teaching literature under interdisciplinary contexts (e.g., science, art) that connect reading materials has become popular in elementary schools. However, constructing such contexts is challenging as it requires teachers to explore substantial amounts of interdisciplinary content and link it to the reading materials. In this paper, we develop LitLinker via an iterative design process involving 13 teachers to facilitate the ideation of interdisciplinary contexts for teaching literature. Powered by a large language model (LLM), LitLinker can recommend interdisciplinary topics and contextualize them with the literary elements (e.g., paragraphs, viewpoints) in the reading materials. A within-subjects study (N=16) shows that compared to an LLM chatbot, LitLinker can improve the integration depth of different subjects and reduce workload in this ideation task. Expert interviews (N=9) also demonstrate LitLinker's usefulness for supporting the ideation of interdisciplinary contexts for teaching literature. We conclude with concerns and design considerations for supporting interdisciplinary teaching with LLMs.

ComViewer: An Interactive Visual Tool to Help Viewers Seek Social Support in Online Mental Health Communities

Online mental health communities (OMHCs) offer rich posts and comments for viewers, who do not directly participate in the communications, to seek social support from others' experience. However, viewers could face challenges in finding helpful posts and comments and digesting the content to get needed support, as revealed in our formative study (N=10). In this work, we present an interactive visual tool named ComViewer to help viewers seek social support in OMHCs. With ComViewer, viewers can filter posts of different topics and find supportive comments via a zoomable circle packing visual component that adapts to searched keywords. Powered by LLM, ComViewer supports an interactive sensemaking process by enabling viewers to interactively highlight, summarize, and question any community content. A within-subjects study (N=20) demonstrates ComViewer's strengths in providing viewers with a more simplified, more fruitful, and more engaging support-seeking experience compared to a baseline OMHC interface without ComViewer. We further discuss design implications for facilitating information-seeking and sense making in online mental health communities.

MentalImager: Exploring Generative Images for Assisting Support-Seekers' Self-Disclosure in Online Mental Health Communities

Support-seekers' self-disclosure of their suffering experiences, thoughts, and feelings in the post can help them get needed peer support in online mental health communities (OMHCs). However, such mental health self-disclosure could be challenging. Images can facilitate the manifestation of relevant experiences and feelings in the text; yet, relevant images are not always available. In this paper, we present a technical prototype named MentalImager and validate in a human evaluation study that it can generate topical- and emotional-relevant images based on the seekers' drafted posts or specified keywords. Two user studies demonstrate that MentalImager not only improves seekers' satisfaction with their self-disclosure in their posts but also invokes support-providers' empathy for the seekers and willingness to offer help. Such improvements are credited to the generated images, which help seekers express their emotions and inspire them to add more details about their experiences and feelings. We report concerns on MentalImager and discuss insights for supporting self-disclosure in OMHCs.

LessonPlanner: Assisting Novice Teachers to Prepare Pedagogy-Driven Lesson Plans with Large Language Models

Preparing a lesson plan, e.g., a detailed road map with strategies and materials for instructing a 90-minute class, is beneficial yet challenging for novice teachers. Large language models (LLMs) can ease this process by generating adaptive content for lesson plans, which would otherwise require teachers to create from scratch or search existing resources. In this work, we first conduct a formative study with six novice teachers to understand their needs for support of preparing lesson plans with LLMs. Then, we develop LessonPlanner that assists users to interactively construct lesson plans with adaptive LLM-generated content based on Gagne's nine events. Our within-subjects study (N=12) shows that compared to the baseline ChatGPT interface, LessonPlanner can significantly improve the quality of outcome lesson plans and ease users' workload in the preparation process. Our expert interviews (N=6) further demonstrate LessonPlanner's usefulness in suggesting effective teaching strategies and meaningful educational resources. We discuss concerns on and design considerations for supporting teaching activities with LLMs.
