A deformation of Asaeda-Przytycki-Sikora homology

We define a 1-parameter family of homology invariants for links in thickened oriented surfaces. It recovers the homology invariant of Asaeda-Przytycki-Sikora (arxiv:0409414) and the invariant defined by Winkeler (arxiv:2106.03834). The new invariant can be regarded as a deformation of Asaeda-Przytycki-Sikora homology; it is not a Lee-type deformation as the deformation is only non-trivial when the surface is not simply connected. Our construction is motivated by computations in singular instanton Floer homology. We also prove a detection property for the new invariant, which is a stronger result than the main theorem of arxiv:2208.13963.

Instanton homology and knot detection on thickened surfaces

Suppose $Σ$ is a compact oriented surface (possibly with boundary) that has genus zero, and L is a link in the interior of $(-1,1)\timesΣ$. We prove that the Asaeda-Przytycki-Sikora (APS) homology of L has rank 2 if and only if L is isotopic to an embedded knot in $\{0\}\timesΣ$. As a consequence, the APS homology detects the unknot in $(-1,1)\timesΣ$. This is the first detection result for generalized Khovanov homology that is valid on an infinite family of manifolds, and it partially solves a conjecture in arxiv:2005.12863. Our proof is different from the previous detection results obtained by instanton homology because in this case, the second page of Kronheimer-Mrowka's spectral sequence is not isomorphic to the APS homology. We also characterize all links in product manifolds that have minimal sutured instanton homology, which may be of independent interest.

Instanton Floer homology, sutures, and Heegaard diagrams

This paper establishes a new technique that enables us to access some fundamental structural properties of instanton Floer homology. As an application, we establish, for the first time, a relation between the instanton Floer homology of a $3$-manifold or a null-homologous knot inside a $3$-manifold and the Heegaard diagram of that $3$-manifold or knot. We further use this relation to compute the instanton knot homology of some families of $(1,1)$-knots, including all torus knots in $S^3$, which were mostly unknown before. As a second application, we also study the relation between the instanton knot homology $KHI(Y,K)$ and the framed instanton Floer homology $I^\sharp(Y)$. In particular, we prove the inequality $\dim_\mathbb{C} I^\sharp(Y)\le \dim_\mathbb{C}KHI(Y,K)$ for all rationally null-homologous knots $K\subset Y$ and we constructed a new decomposition of the framed instanton Floer homology of Dehn surgeries along $K$ that corresponds to the decomposition along torsion spin$^c$ decompositions in monopole and Heegaard Floer theory.

On the tau invariants in instanton and monopole Floer theories

We unify two existing approaches to the tau invariants in instanton and monopole Floer theories, by identifying $τ_{\mathrm{G}}$, defined by the second author via the minus flavors $\underline{\operatorname{KHI}}^-$ and $\underline{\operatorname{KHM}}^-$ of the knot homologies, with $τ_{\mathrm{G}}^{\sharp}$, defined by Baldwin and Sivek via cobordism maps of the $3$-manifold homologies induced by knot surgeries. We exhibit several consequences, including a relationship with Heegaard Floer theory, and use our result to compute $\underline{\operatorname{KHI}}^-$ and $\underline{\operatorname{KHM}}^-$ for twist knots.

Small Dehn surgery and SU(2)

We prove that the fundamental group of 3-surgery on a nontrivial knot in the 3-sphere always admits an irreducible SU(2)-representation. This answers a question of Kronheimer and Mrowka dating from their work on the Property P conjecture. An important ingredient in our proof is a relationship between instanton Floer homology and the symplectic Floer homology of genus-2 surface diffeomorphisms, due to Ivan Smith. We use similar arguments at the end to extend our main result to infinitely many surgery slopes in the interval [3,5).

On Floer minimal knots in sutured manifolds

Suppose $(M, γ)$ is a balanced sutured manifold and $K$ is a rationally null-homologous knot in $M$. It is known that the rank of the sutured Floer homology of $M\backslash N(K)$ is at least twice the rank of the sutured Floer homology of $M$. This paper studies the properties of $K$ when the equality is achieved for instanton homology. As an application, we show that if $L\subset S^3$ is a fixed link and $K$ is a knot in the complement of $L$, then the instanton link Floer homology of $L\cup K$ achieves the minimum rank if and only if $K$ is the unknot in $S^3\backslash L$.

Decomposing sutured monopole and Instanton Floer homologies

In this paper, we generalize the work of the second author and prove a grading shifting property, in sutured monopole and instanton Floer theories, for general balanced sutured manifolds. This result has a few consequences. First, we offer an algorithm that computes the Floer homologies of a family of sutured handle-bodies. Second, we obtain a canonical decomposition of sutured monopole and instanton Floer homologies and build polytopes for these two theories, which was initially achieved by Juhász for sutured (Heegaard) Floer homology. Third, we establish a Thurston-norm detection result for monopole and instanton knot Floer homologies, which were introduced by Kronheimer and Mrowka. The same result was originally proved by Ozsváth and Szabó for link Floer homology. Last, we generalize the construction of minus versions of monopole and instanton knot Floer homology, which was initially done for knots by the second author, to the case of links. Along with the construction of polytopes, we also proved that, for a balanced sutured manifold with vanishing second homology, the rank of the sutured monopole or instanton Floer homology bounds the depth of the balanced sutured manifold. As a corollary, we obtain an independent proof that monopole and instanton knot Floer homologies, as mentioned above, both detect fibred knots in $S^3$. This result was originally achieved by Kronheimer and Mrowka.

Sutured instanton homology and Heegaard diagrams

Suppose H is an admissible Heegaard diagram for a balanced sutured manifold (M,γ). We prove that the number of generators of the associated sutured Heegaard Floer complex is an upper bound on the dimension of the sutured instanton homology of (M,γ). It follows, in particular, that strong L-spaces are instanton L-spaces.

Instanton and the depth of taut foliations

Sutured instanton Floer homology was introduced by Kronheimer and Mrowka. In this paper, we prove that for a taut balanced sutured manifold with vanishing second homology, the dimension of the sutured instanton Floer homology provides a bound on the minimal depth of all possible taut foliations on that balanced sutured manifold. The same argument can be adapted to the monopole and even the Heegaard Floer settings, which gives a partial answer to one of Juhasz's conjectures. Using the nature of instanton Floer homology, on knot complements, we can construct a taut foliation with bounded depth, given some information on the representation varieties of the knot fundamental groups. This indicates a mystery relation between the representation varieties and some small depth taut foliations on knot complements, and gives a partial answer to one of Kronheimer and Mrowka's conjecture.

Classification of tight contact structures on a solid torus

It is a basic question in contact geometry to classify all non-isotopic tight contact structures on a given 3-manifold. If the manifold has a boundary, we need also specify the dividing set on the boundary. In this paper, we answer the classification question completely for the case of a solid torus by writing down a closed formula for the number of non-isotopic tight contact structures with any given dividing set on the boundary of the solid torus. Previously, only a few special cases were known due to work by Honda.

Trunk of Satellite and Companion Knots

We study the knot invariant called trunk, as defined by Ozawa, and the relation of the trunk of a satellite knot with the trunk of its companion knot. Our first result is ${\rm trunk}(K) \geq n \cdot {\rm trunk}(J)$ where ${\rm trunk}(\cdot)$ denotes the trunk of a knot, $K$ is a satellite knot with companion $J$, and $n$ is the winding number of $K$. To upgrade winding number to wrapping number, which we denote by $m$, we must include an extra factor of $\frac{1}{2}$ in our second result ${\rm trunk}(K) > \frac{1}{2} m\cdot {\rm trunk}(J)$ since $m \geq n$. We also discuss generalizations of the second result.

Contact structures, excisions, and sutured monopole Floer homology

In this paper, we explore the interplay between contact structures and sutured monopole Floer homology. First, we study the behavior of contact elements, which were defined by Baldwin and Sivek, under the operation of performing Floer excisions, which was introduced to the context of sutured monopole Floer homology by Kronheimer and Mrowka. We then compute the sutured monopole Floer homology of some special balanced sutured manifolds, using tools closely related to contact geometry. For application, we obtain an exact triangle for the oriented skein relation in monopole theory and derive a connected sum formula for sutured monopole Floer homology.

Knot homologies in monopole and instanton theories via sutures

In this paper we construct possible candidates for the minus versions of monopole and instanton knot Floer homologies. For a null-homologous knot $K\subset Y$ and a base point $p\in K$, we can associate the minus versions, $\underline{\rm KHM}^-(Y,K,p)$ and $\underline{\rm KHI}^-(Y,K,p)$, to the triple $(Y,K,p)$. We prove that a Seifert surface of $K$ induces a $\mathbb{Z}$-grading, and there is an $U$-map on the minus versions, which is of degree $-1$. We also prove other basic properties of them. If $K\subset Y$ is not null-homologous but represents a torsion class, then we can also construct the corresponding minus versions for $(Y,K,p)$. We also proved a surgery-type formula relating the minus versions of a knot $K$ with those of the dual knot, when performing a Dehn surgery of large enough slope along $K$. The techniques developed in this paper can also be applied to compute the sutured monopole and instanton Floer homologies of any sutured solid tori.

Width of a satellite knot and its companion

In the paper we prove the conjecture by Alexander Zupan that $w(K) \geqslant n^2w(J)$ where w denote the width and $K$ and $J$ are satellite knot and its companion with winding number $n$. Also we proved that for satellite knot with braid pattern, the equality holds.
