Cooperative Bistatic ISAC Systems for Low-Altitude Economy

The burgeoning low-altitude economy (LAE) necessitates integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems capable of high-accuracy multi-target localization and velocity estimation under hardware and coverage constraints inherent in conventional ISAC architectures. This paper addresses these challenges by proposing a cooperative bistatic ISAC framework within MIMO-OFDM cellular networks, enabling robust sensing services for LAE applications through standardized 5G New Radio (NR) infrastructure. We first develop a low-complexity parameter extraction algorithm employing CANDECOMP/PARAFAC (CP) tensor decomposition, which exploits the inherent Vandermonde structure in delay-related factor matrices to efficiently recover bistatic ranges, Doppler velocities, and angles-of-arrival (AoA) from multi-dimensional received signal tensors. To resolve data association ambiguity across distributed transmitter-receiver pairs and mitigate erroneous estimates, we further design a robust fusion scheme based on the minimum spanning tree (MST) method, enabling joint 3D position and velocity reconstruction. Comprehensive simulation results validate the framework's superiority in computational efficiency and sensing performance for low-altitude scenarios.

UAV SAR Imaging with 5G NR OFDM Signals in NLOS Environments

The integration of sensing and communication (ISAC) has significant potential for future wireless systems, enabling efficient spectrum utilization and novel application scenarios. In this paper, we propose a cooperative ISAC framework for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging by leveraging orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication signals. We address the challenge of severe imaging degradation in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) environments under the QUAsi Deterministic RadIo channel GenerAtor (QuaDRiGa). To detect weak signals and eliminate false points, we develop a two-stage compressed sensing-space alternating generalized expectation maximization (CS-SAGE) scheme for high-precision scatterer localization. In stage I, orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) is employed for coarse estimation to identify the approximate locations of dominant scatterers. Then, the SAGE algorithm in stage II performs fine estimation to accurately extract scatterer parameters. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed cooperative ISAC framework, and provide valuable insights for practical system design.

Sensing Capacity for Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems in Low-Altitude Economy

The burgeoning significance of the low-altitude economy (LAE) has garnered considerable interest, largely fuelled by the widespread deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). To tackle the challenges associated with the detection of unauthorized UAVs and the efficient scheduling of authorized UAVs, this letter introduces a novel performance metric, termed sensing capacity, for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. This metric, which quantifies the capability of a base station (BS) to detect multiple UAVs simultaneously, leverages signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and probability of detection (PD) as key intermediate variables. Through mathematical derivations, we can derive a closed-form solution for the maximum number of UAVs that can be detected by the BS while adhering to a specific SNR constraint. Furthermore, an approximate solution based on PD constraints is proposed to facilitate the efficient determination of the threshold for the maximum number of detectable UAVs. The accuracy of this analytical approach is verified through extensive simulation results.

A Framework of RIS-assisted ICSC User-centric Based Systems: Latency Optimization and Design

This paper studies a comprehensive framework for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted integrated communication, sensing, and computation (ICSC) systems with a User-centric focus. The study encompasses two scenarios: the general multi-user equipment (UE) scenario and the simplified single-UE scenario. To satisfy the critical need for time-efficient sensing, we investigate the latency minimization problem, subject to constraints on UEs' transmit power, radar signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR), RIS phase shift, and computation capability. To address the formulated non-convex problem in the multi-UE scenario, we decouple the original problem into two subproblems, where the computational and beamforming settings are optimized alternately. Specifically, for the computational settings, we derive a closed-form solution for the offloading volume and propose a low-complexity algorithm based on the bisection search method to optimize the edge computing resource allocation. Additionally, we employ two equivalent transformations to address the challenge posed by the non-convex sum-of-ratios form in the objective function (OF) of the subproblem related to active and passive beamforming. Several techniques are then combined to address these subproblems. Furthermore, a low-complexity algorithm that offers closed-form solutions is developed for the simplified single UE scenario. Finally, simulation results substantiate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Target Localization in Cooperative ISAC Systems: A Scheme Based on 5G NR OFDM Signals

The integration of sensing capabilities into communication systems, by sharing physical resources, has a significant potential for reducing spectrum, hardware, and energy costs while inspiring innovative applications. Cooperative networks, in particular, are expected to enhance sensing services by enlarging the coverage area and enriching sensing measurements, thus improving the service availability and accuracy. This paper proposes a cooperative integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) framework by leveraging information-bearing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals transmitted by access points (APs). Specifically, we propose a two-stage scheme for target localization, where communication signals are reused as sensing reference signals based on the system information shared at the central processing unit (CPU). In Stage I, we propose a twodimensional fast Fourier transform (2D-FFT)-based algorithm to measure the ranges of scattered paths induced by targets, through the extraction of delay and Doppler information from the sensing channels between APs. Then, the target locations are estimated in Stage II based on these range measurements. Considering the potential occurrence of ill-conditioned measurements with large error during the extraction of time-frequency information, we propose an efficient algorithm to match the range measurements with the targets while eliminating ill-onditioned measurements, achieving high-accuracy target localization. In addition, based on the transmission configurations defined in the fifth generation (5G) standards, we elucidate the performance trade-offs in both communication and sensing, and extend the proposed sensing scheme for general scenarios. Finally, numerical results confirm the effectiveness of our sensing scheme and the cooperative gain of the ISAC framework.

Active pulsatile gels: from chemical microreactor to polymeric actuator

We report on a synthesis protocol, experimental characterization and theoretical modeling of active pulsatile Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) hydrogels. Our two-step synthesis technique allows independent optimization of the geometry, the chemical, and the mechanical properties of BZ gels. We identify the role of the surrounding medium chemistry and gel radius for the occurrence of BZ gel oscillations, quantified by the Damkohler number, ratio of chemical reaction to diffusion rates. Tuning the BZ gel size to maximize its chemomechanical oscillation amplitude, we find that its oscillatory strain amplitude is limited by the timescale of gel swelling relative to the chemical oscillation period. Our experimental findings are in good agreement with a Vanag-Epstein model of BZ chemistry and a Tanaka Fillmore theory of gel swelling dynamics.

Energy Minimization for Active RIS-Aided UAV-Enabled SWIPT Systems

In this paper, we consider an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)-enabled simultaneous wireless information and power transfer(SWIPT) system with multiple ground users. Compared with the conventional passive RIS, the active RIS deploying the internally integrated amplifiers can offset part of the multiplicative fading. In this system, we deal with an optimization problem of minimizing the total energy cost of the UAV. Specifically, we alternately optimize the trajectories, the hovering time, and the reflection vectors at the active RIS by using the successive convex approximation (SCA) method. Simulation results show that the active RIS performs better in energy saving than the conventional passive RIS.

Active Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface for Mobile Edge Computing

This paper investigates an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided mobile edge computing (MEC) system. Compared with passive RIS, the active RIS is equipped with active reflective amplifier, which can effectively circumvent the "double path loss" attenuation. We propose a joint computing and communication design to minimize the maximum computational latency (MCL), subject to both the phase shift constraints and the edge computing capability constraints. Specifically, the original problem is decoupled into four subproblems, and then the block coordinate descent (BCD) method and the successive convex approximation (SCA) method are applied to alternately optimize the subproblems. The simulation results show that with the same power budget, the performance gain achieved by the active RIS is much larger than that by the passive RIS.

Energy Minimization in RIS-Assisted UAV-Enabled Wireless Power Transfer Systems

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless power transfer (WPT) systems offer significant advantages in coverage and deployment flexibility, but suffer from endurance limitations due to the limited onboard energy. This paper proposes to improve the energy efficiency of UAV-enabled WPT systems with multiple ground sensors by utilizing reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). Specifically, the total energy consumption of the UAV is minimized, while meeting the energy requirement of each sensor. Firstly, we consider a fly-hover-broadcast (FHB) protocol, in which the UAV radiates radio frequency (RF) signals only at several hovering locations. The energy minimization problem is formulated to jointly optimize the UAV's trajectory, hovering time and the RIS's reflection coefficients. To solve this complex non-convex problem, we propose an efficient algorithm. Specifically, the successive convex approximation (SCA) framework is adopted to jointly optimize the UAV's trajectory and hovering time, in which a minorization-maximization (MM) algorithm that maximizes the minimum charged energy of all sensors is provided to update the reflection coefficients. Then, we investigate the general scenario in which the RF signals are radiated during the flight, aiming to minimize the total energy consumption of the UAV by jointly optimizing the UAV's trajectory, flight time and the RIS's reflection coefficients. By applying the path discretization (PD) protocol, the optimization problem is formulated with a finite number of variables. A high-quality solution for this more challenging problem is obtained. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and the benefits of RIS in energy saving.

Multiuser Full-Duplex Two-Way Communications via Intelligent Reflecting Surface

Low-cost passive intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) have recently been envisioned as a revolutionary technology capable of reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment through carefully tuning reflection elements. This paper proposes deploying an IRS to cover the dead zone of cellular multiuser full-duplex (FD) two-way communication links while suppressing user-side self-interference (SI) and co-channel interference (CI). Based on information exchanged by the base station (BS) and all users, this approach can potentially double the spectral efficiency. To ensure network fairness, we jointly optimize the precoding matrix of the BS and the reflection coefficients of the IRS to maximize the weighted minimum rate (WMR) of all users, subject to maximum transmit power and unit-modulus constraints. We reformulate this non-convex problem and decouple it into two subproblems. Then the optimization variables in the equivalent problem are alternately optimized by adopting the block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm. In order to further reduce the computational complexity, we propose the minorization-maximization (MM) algorithm for optimizing the precoding matrix and the reflection coefficient vector by defining minorizing functions in the surrogate problems. Finally, simulation results confirm the convergence and efficiency of our proposed algorithm, and validate the advantages of introducing IRS to improve coverage in blind areas.

Vertically-Oriented Graphene Oxide Membranes for High-Performance Osmotic Energy Conversion

Reverse electrodialysis is a promising method to harvest the osmotic energy stored between seawater and freshwater, but it has been a long-standing challenge to fabricate permselective membranes with the power density surpassing the industry benchmark of 5.0 W $m^{-2}$ for half a century. Herein, we report a vertically-oriented graphene oxide membranes (V-GOMs) with the combination of high ion selectivity and ultrafast ion permeation, whose permeation is three orders of magnitude higher than the extensively studied horizontally stacked GOMs (H-GOMs). By mixing artificial seawater and river water, we obtained an unprecedented high output power density of 10.6 W $m^{-2}$, outperforming all existing materials. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveal the mechanism of the ultrafast transport in V-GOMs results from the quick entering of ions and the large accessible area as well as the apparent short diffusion paths in V-GOMs. These results will facilitate the practical application of osmotic energy and bring innovative design strategy for various systems involving ultrafast transport, such as filtration and catalysis.

Effects of particle stiffness on the extensional rheology of model rod-like nanoparticle suspensions

The linear and nonlinear rheological behavior of two rod-like particle suspensions as a function of concentration is studied using small amplitude oscillatory shear, steady shear and capillary breakup extensional rheometry. The rod-like suspensions are composed of fd virus and its mutant fdY21M, which are perfectly monodisperse, with a length on the order of 900 nm. The particles are semi flexible yet differ in their persistence length. The effect of stiffness on the rheological behavior in both, shear and extensional flow, is investigated experimentally. The linear viscoelastic shear data is compared in detail with theoretical predictions for worm-like chains. The extensional properties are compared to Batchelor's theory, generalized for the shear thinning nature of the suspensions. Theoretical predictions agree well with the measured complex moduli at low concentrations as well as the nonlinear shear and elongational viscosities at high flow rates. The results in this work provide guidelines for enhancing the elongational viscosity based on purely frictional effects in absence of strong normal forces which are characteristic for high molecular weight polymers.
