Mining Negative Sequential Patterns to Improve Viral Genomic Feature Representation and Classification

Viruses represent the most abundant biological entities on Earth and play a pivotal role in microbial ecosystems, yet, as prominent human pathogens, they are closely linked to human morbidity and mortality. Accurate identification of viral sequences from viral genome sequences is therefore essential, but existing genome-based classification models that largely relying on composition- or frequency-based subsequence features often suffer from limited interpretability and reduced accuracy, particularly on complex or imbalanced datasets. To address these limitations, we propose GeneNSPCla (Genomic Negative Sequential Pattern-based Classification), a novel viral classification framework based on Negative Sequential Patterns (NSPs) that extracts discriminative absence-based features from nucleotide sequences of RNA viral genomes. By transforming these NSPs into numerical feature vectors and integrating them into multiple supervised classifiers, GeneNSPCla effectively captures both presence and absence signals in viral sequences. Furthermore, we propose a negative pattern mining algorithm adapted for processing genomic data: GONPM+, which can discover longer and more biologically meaningful negative sequential patterns. The experimental results demonstrate that the average accuracy of GONPM+ in 8 classifiers has improved by 10.03% compared to the original negative pattern mining algorithm and by 24.75% compared to the positive pattern mining algorithm. These findings highlight the effectiveness of incorporating absence-based sequential information, providing a new and complementary perspective for viral genome analysis and classification.

Utility-based Privacy Preserving Data Mining

With the advent of big data, periodic pattern mining has demonstrated significant value in real-world applications, including smart home systems, healthcare systems, and the medical field. However, advances in network technology have enabled malicious actors to extract sensitive information from publicly available datasets, posing significant threats to data providers and, in severe cases, hindering societal development. To mitigate such risks, privacy-preserving utility mining (PPUM) has been proposed. However, PPUM is unsuitable for addressing privacy concerns in periodic information mining. To address this issue, we innovatively extend the existing PPUM framework and propose two algorithms, Maximum sensitive Utility-MAximum maxPer item (MU-MAP) and Maximum sensitive Utility-MInimum maxPer item (MU-MIP). These algorithms aim to hide sensitive periodic high-utility itemsets while generating sanitized datasets. To enhance the efficiency of the algorithms, we designed two novel data structures: the Sensitive Itemset List (SISL) and the Sensitive Item List (SIL), which store essential information about sensitive itemsets and their constituent items. Moreover, several performance metrics were employed to evaluate the performance of our algorithms compared to the state-of-the-art PPUM algorithms. The experimental results show that our proposed algorithms achieve an Artificial Cost (AC) value of 0 on all datasets when hiding sensitive itemsets. In contrast, the traditional PPUM algorithm yields non-zero AC. This indicates that our algorithms can successfully hide sensitive periodic itemsets without introducing misleading patterns, whereas the PPUM algorithm generates additional itemsets that may interfere with user decision-making. Moreover, the results also reveal that our algorithms maintain Database Utility Similarity (DUS) of over 90\% after the sensitive itemsets are hidden.

TALENT: Targeted Mining of Non-overlapping Sequential Patterns

With the widespread application of efficient pattern mining algorithms, sequential patterns that allow gap constraints have become a valuable tool to discover knowledge from biological data such as DNA and protein sequences. Among all kinds of gap-constrained mining, non-overlapping sequence mining can mine interesting patterns and satisfy the anti-monotonic property (the Apriori property). However, existing algorithms do not search for targeted sequential patterns, resulting in unnecessary and redundant pattern generation. Targeted pattern mining can not only mine patterns that are more interesting to users but also reduce the unnecessary redundant sequence generated, which can greatly avoid irrelevant computation. In this paper, we define and formalize the problem of targeted non-overlapping sequential pattern mining and propose an algorithm named TALENT (TArgeted mining of sequentiaL pattErN with consTraints). Two search methods including breadth-first and depth-first searching are designed to troubleshoot the generation of patterns. Furthermore, several pruning strategies to reduce the reading of sequences and items in the data and terminate redundant pattern extensions are presented. Finally, we select a series of datasets with different characteristics and conduct extensive experiments to compare the TALENT algorithm with the existing algorithms for mining non-overlapping sequential patterns. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed targeted mining algorithm, TALENT, has excellent mining efficiency and can deal efficiently with many different query settings.

Towards Top-$K$ Non-Overlapping Sequential Patterns

Sequential pattern mining (SPM) has excellent prospects and application spaces and has been widely used in different fields. The non-overlapping SPM, as one of the data mining techniques, has been used to discover patterns that have requirements for gap constraints in some specific mining tasks, such as bio-data mining. And for the non-overlapping sequential patterns with gap constraints, the Nettree structure has been proposed to efficiently compute the support of the patterns. For pattern mining, users usually need to consider the threshold of minimum support (\textit{minsup}). This is especially difficult in the case of large databases. Although some existing algorithms can mine the top-$k$ patterns, they are approximate algorithms with fixed lengths. In this paper, a precise algorithm for mining \underline{T}op-$k$ \underline{N}on-\underline{O}verlapping \underline{S}equential \underline{P}atterns (TNOSP) is proposed. The top-$k$ solution of SPM is an effective way to discover the most frequent non-overlapping sequential patterns without having to set the \textit{minsup}. As a novel pattern mining algorithm, TNOSP can precisely search the top-$k$ patterns of non-overlapping sequences with different gap constraints. We further propose a pruning strategy named \underline{Q}ueue \underline{M}eta \underline{S}et \underline{P}runing (QMSP) to improve TNOSP's performance. TNOSP can reduce redundancy in non-overlapping sequential mining and has better performance in mining precise non-overlapping sequential patterns. The experimental results and comparisons on several datasets have shown that TNOSP outperformed the existing algorithms in terms of precision, efficiency, and scalability.

Second, we discuss the manifestation of human-centric in the Metaverse. Finally, we discuss some current issues in the construction of HCM. In this paper, we provide a detailed review of the applications of human-centric technologies in the Metaverse, as well as the relevant HCM application scenarios. We hope that this paper can provide researchers and developers with some directions and ideas for human-centric Metaverse construction.

Maximal co-occurrence nonoverlapping sequential rule mining

The aim of sequential pattern mining (SPM) is to discover potentially useful information from a given se-quence. Although various SPM methods have been investigated, most of these focus on mining all of the patterns. However, users sometimes want to mine patterns with the same specific prefix pattern, called co-occurrence pattern. Since sequential rule mining can make better use of the results of SPM, and obtain better recommendation performance, this paper addresses the issue of maximal co-occurrence nonoverlapping sequential rule (MCoR) mining and proposes the MCoR-Miner algo-rithm. To improve the efficiency of support calculation, MCoR-Miner employs depth-first search and backtracking strategies equipped with an indexing mechanism to avoid the use of sequential searching. To obviate useless support calculations for some sequences, MCoR-Miner adopts a filtering strategy to prune the sequences without the prefix pattern. To reduce the number of candidate patterns, MCoR-Miner applies the frequent item and binomial enumeration tree strategies. To avoid searching for the maximal rules through brute force, MCoR-Miner uses a screening strategy. To validate the per-formance of MCoR-Miner, eleven competitive algorithms were conducted on eight sequences. Our experimental results showed that MCoR-Miner outperformed other competitive algorithms, and yielded better recommendation performance than frequent co-occurrence pattern mining. All algorithms and datasets can be downloaded from https://github.com/wuc567/Pattern-Mining/tree/master/MCoR-Miner.
