Quantum Time Synchronization of Star Networks

We extend the single source approach of Valencia et al in order to synchronize the clocks of an N user start network, connected both through fiber and in free space. Entangled photon pairs from a centralized SPDC source are distributed through a 1 by N splitter to four remote users arranged in a star topology. Using commercially available single photon detectors and time taggers, we achieve median time precision of 50 ps for atomic oscillators and 20 ps for GPS displayed oscillators in our Kalman models. Thus, we achieve three order of magnitude improvement over GPS alone. By monitoring the drift fo the correlation peaks over time, we also extract the frequency skew between users's local clocks to 35ps/s precision. From these measurements, e3ach user can compute its offset and drift relative to every other user, achieving full network synchronization without a central clock.

Integrated microheater on the 4H-silicon-carbide-on-insulator platform and its applications

Recent progress in the 4H-silicon-carbide-on-insulator (4H-SiCOI) platform has resulted in the demonstration of essential building blocks such as low-loss waveguides and microresonators. In this work, we add tunability to the 4H-SiCOI platform by integrating microheaters with compact microresonators. The strong thermo-optic effect in SiC enables a resonance tuning rate of $11.7$ pm/mW for a 36-$μ$m-radius SiC microring, with a maximum wavelength shift up to $2.4$ nm (300 GHz). The thermal time constant of the microheater is estimated near 7 $μ$s, corresponding to a 3-dB electrical bandwidth of 40 kHz. As a demonstration of potential applications, we employ the microheater to perform fast thermo-optic scans to deterministically access the single-soliton state of a 36-$μ$m-radius microcomb source. In addition, an add-drop filter based on an over-coupled 18-$μ$m-radius SiC microring is combined with the microcomb source for the selective filtering of individual comb lines, featuring an approximate 3-dB bandwidth of 5 GHz and an insertion loss of less than 1 dB. With such demonstrations, our work brings the much-needed tunability and reconfigurability to the 4H-SiCOI platform, paving the way for a wealth of chip-scale applications.

A Novel Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation Design for 100G Coherent Passive Optical Network

With the rapid advancements in coherent Passive Optical Network (PON) technologies featuring 100G and higher data rates, this paper addresses the urgent requirement for sophisticated simulation and MAC layer development within the domain of coherent Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) PON and coherent Time and Frequency Division Multiplexing (TFDM) PON networks. The ever-growing demand for latency-sensitive services and expanding user populations in next-generation 100G and beyond coherent PONs, underscores the crucial need for low-latency bandwidth management and efficient Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) mechanisms. In this paper, we present a pioneering analysis of two established DBAs from the perspective of temporal misalignments. Subsequently, a novel DBA algorithm tailored for coherent PONs featuring 100 Gbps data rate and up to 512 end-users is introduced, named the Hybrid-Switch DBA. This innovative approach allows for adaptive switching of the DBA scheme in response to real-time traffic conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this paper represents the first attempt to address the misalignment problem of DBA and proposes a novel DBA solution for both TDM- and TFDM-based coherent PON networks. This research significantly contributes to the development of coherent TDM PON and coherent TFDM PON networks by enhancing the efficiency of bandwidth allocation and addressing the challenges associated with misalignments in DBA mechanisms. As optical access networks continue to evolve to meet the ever-increasing demands of modern communication services, the Hybrid-Switch DBA algorithm presented in this paper offers a promising solution for optimizing network performance and accommodating latency-sensitive applications.

Silicon carbide soliton microcomb generation for narrow-grid optical communications

A soliton microcomb can play a crucial role in narrow-grid optical communications by replacing many independently operated lasers in wavelength-division multiplexing systems. In this work, we designed and demonstrated power-efficient soliton microcombs with 100-GHz free spectral range in an integrated 4H-SiC platform for the first time. The combination of enabling technologies, including efficient fiber coupling (3 dB insertion loss), high-quality-factor microrings (intrinsic quality factors up to 5.7 million), and the employment of the Raman effect for adiabatic accessing of the soliton state, has enabled the demonstration of soliton pump power as low as 6 mW while supporting comb powers above -20 dBm per line near the pump wavelength.

Intelligent Bandwidth Allocation for Latency Management in NG-EPON using Reinforcement Learning Methods

A novel intelligent bandwidth allocation scheme in NG-EPON using reinforcement learning is proposed and demonstrated for latency management. We verify the capability of the proposed scheme under both fixed and dynamic traffic loads scenarios to achieve <1ms average latency. The RL agent demonstrates an efficient intelligent mechanism to manage the latency, which provides a promising IBA solution for the next-generation access network.
