Reconfigurable all-optical inference via tunable second-harmonic generation and spin-orbit coupling cascade

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is widely exploited as a fundamental mechanism for generating orbital angular momentum (OAM); however, conventional approaches typically lack flexibility and tunability. Here, we introduce a continuously tunable second-harmonic generation (SHG)-SOC cascade mechanism modulated by a spatially movable nonlinear crystal. Under linearly polarized excitation, the SHG-SOC cascade engages synchronously with both degenerate and nondegenerate SHG processes, thereby expanding the OAM spectrum and significantly enhancing the information density and feature-mapping capacity of the optical field. Moreover, the OAM spectral distribution can be continuously reconfigured simply by translating the nonlinear crystal. This deterministic physical evolution, which maps simple OAM modes onto a tunable high-dimensional OAM space, is mathematically analogous to the high-dimensional feature expansion performed by a kernel function of a support vector machine (SVM) in machine learning. Such dimensional expansion can project linearly inseparable input data into a high-dimensional space where they become linearly separable. Exploiting this physics-algorithm analogy, we develop a reconfigurable all-optical inference platform. As a proof of concept, we successfully perform classification tasks, including the recognition of Iris flowers and Palmer penguins. This work establishes a scalable, physically reconfigurable architecture for high-dimensional all-optical computing and neuromorphic photonics.

High-Dimensional Light Field Modulation via Conjugate Phase Encoding in Liquid Crystal Devices

High-dimensional light field modulation demands precise control over multiple optical parameters, a capability critical for next-generation photonic systems. While liquid crystals offer inherent advantages in dynamic birefringence tuning, existing approaches face fundamental limitations in decoupling interdependent phase responses across polarization states. Here, we demonstrate a conjugate phase encoding paradigm enabling simultaneous manipulation of wavelength-dependent wavefronts, orbital angular momentum (OAM), and polarization states in photoaligned liquid crystal devices.

Generalized Skyrmions

Skyrmions are important topologically non-trivial fields characteristic of models spanning scales from the microscopic to the cosmological. However, the Skyrmion number can only be defined for fields with specific boundary conditions, limiting its use in broader contexts. Here, we address this issue through a generalized notion of the Skyrmion derived from the De Rham cohomology of compactly supported forms. This allows for the definition of an entirely new $\coprod_{i=1}^\infty \mathbb{Z}^i$-valued topological number that assigns a tuple of integers $(a_1, \ldots, a_k)\in \mathbb{Z}^k$ to a field instead of a single number, with no restrictions to its boundary. The notion of the generalized Skyrmion presented in this paper is completely abstract and can be applied to vector fields in any discipline, not unlike index theory within dynamical systems. To demonstrate the power of our new formalism, we focus on the propagation of optical polarization fields and show that our newly defined generalized Skyrmion number significantly increases the dimension of data that can be stored within the field while also demonstrating strong robustness. Our work represents a fundamental paradigm shift away from the study of fields with natural topological character to engineered fields that can be artificially embedded with topological structures.

Photonic quasicrystal of spin angular momentum

Quasicrystals, characterized by long-range order without translational symmetry, have catalyzed transformative advances in various fields, including optics in terms of field quasicrystals. Here,we present the first demonstration of photonic quasicrystals formed by spin angular momentum, unveiling novel spin-orbit coupling effects absent in traditional field quasicrystals.A de Bruijn tiling like theoretical framework was built elucidating the formation mechanism of spin quasicrystals for diverse symmetries. Moreover, the configurations of these spin textures can be manipulated through the adjustments of the wavefronts, among which phason-like discontinuous dynamics is observed and quantitatively measured. Unlike optical quasicrystals shaped by electromagnetic fields, these spin-governed quasicrystals exhibit quasi-periodic properties of kinematic parameters, extending their potential applications to other physical systems. These findings hold promise for novel advancements in optical trapping, quasicrystal fabrication, and optical encryption systems.

Photonic spin lattices: symmetry constraints for skyrmion and meron topologies

Symmetry governs many electronic and photonic phenomena in optics and condensed matter physics. Skyrmions and merons are prominent topological structures in magnetic materials, with the topological features determined by the interplay between anisotropy of a material and its magnetization. Here we theoretically show and experimentally demonstrate that the symmetry of the electromagnetic field determines the spin topological properties of the guided modes via spin-orbit coupling and may only result in either hexagonal spin-skyrmion or square spin-meron lattices. We also show that in the absence of spin-orbit coupling these spin topologies are degenerated in dynamic field-skyrmions, unifying description of electromagnetic field topologies. The results provide new understanding of electromagnetic field topology and its transformations as well as new opportunities for applications in quantum optics, spin-optics and topological photonics.

Bloch-type photonic skyrmions in optical chiral multilayers

Magnetic skyrmions are topological quasiparticles in magnetic field. Until recently, as one of their photonic counterparts, Néel-type photonic skyrmion is discovered in surface plasmon polaritons. The deep-subwavelength features of the photonic skyrmions suggest their potentials in quantum technologies and data storage. So far, the Bloch-type photonic skyrmion has yet to be demonstrated in this brand new research field. Here, by exploiting the quantum spin Hall effect of a plasmonic optical vortex in multilayered structure, we predict the existence of photonic twisted-Néel- and Bloch-type skyrmions in chiral materials. Their chirality-dependent features can be considered as additional degrees-of-freedom for future chiral sensing, information processing and storage technologies. In particular, our findings enlarge the family of photonic skyrmions and reveal a remarkable resemblance of the feature of chiral materials in two seemingly distant fields: photonic skyrmions and magnetic skyrmions.

Multiple-image encryption and hiding with an optical diffractive neural network

A cascaded phase-only mask architecture (or an optical diffractive neural network) can be employed for different optical information processing tasks such as pattern recognition, orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode conversion, image salience detection and image encryption. However, for optical encryption and watermarking applications, such a system usually cannot process multiple pairs of input images and output images simultaneously. In our proposed scheme, multiple input images can be simultaneously fed to an optical diffractive neural network (DNN) system and each corresponding output image will be displayed in a non-overlap sub-region in the output imaging plane. Each input image undergoes a different optical transform in an independent channel within the same system. The multiple cascaded phase masks in the system can be effectively optimized by a wavefront matching algorithm. Similar to recent optical pattern recognition and mode conversion works, the orthogonality property is employed to design a multiplexed DNN.

Optical machine learning with incoherent light and a single-pixel detector

An optical diffractive neural network (DNN) can be implemented with a cascaded phase mask architecture. Like an optical computer, the system can perform machine learning tasks such as number digit recognition in an all-optical manner. However, the system can only work under coherent light illumination and the precision requirement in practical experiments is quite high. This paper proposes an optical machine learning framework based on single-pixel imaging (MLSPI). The MLSPI system can perform the same linear pattern recognition task as DNN. Furthermore, it can work under incoherent lighting conditions, has lower experimental complexity and can be easily programmable.

Manipulating Coherent Light Matter Interaction: Continuous Transition between Strong Coupling and Weak Coupling in MoS2 Monolayer Coupled with Plasmonic Nanocavities

Strong interactions between surface plasmons in ultra-compact nanocavities and excitons in two dimensional materials have attracted wide interests for its prospective realization of polariton devices at room temperature. Here, we propose a continuous transition from weak coupling to strong coupling between excitons in MoS2 monolayer and highly localized plasmons in ultra-compact nanoantenna. The nanoantenna is assembled by a silver nanocube positioned over a gold film and separated by a dielectric spacer layer. We observed a 1570-fold enhancement in the photoluminescence at weak coupling regime in hybrid nanocavities with thick spacer layers. The interaction between excitons and plasmons is then directly prompted to strong coupling regime by shrinking down the thickness of spacer layer. Room temperature formation of polaritons with Rabi splitting up to 190 meV was observed, which is the largest plasmon-exciton Rabi splitting reported in two dimensional materials. Numerical calculations quantified the relation between coupling strength, local density of states and spacer thickness, and revealed the transition between weak coupling and strong coupling in nanocavities. The findings in this work offer a guideline for feasible designs of plasmon-exciton interaction systems with gap plasmonic cavities.

Known-plaintext attack and ciphertext-only attack for encrypted single-pixel imaging

In many previous works, a single-pixel imaging (SPI) system is constructed as an optical image encryption system. Unauthorized users are not able to reconstruct the plaintext image from the ciphertext intensity sequence without knowing the illumination pattern key. However, little cryptanalysis about encrypted SPI has been investigated in the past. In this work, we propose a known-plaintext attack scheme and a ciphertext-only attack scheme to an encrypted SPI system for the first time. The known-plaintext attack is implemented by interchanging the roles of illumination patterns and object images in the SPI model. The ciphertext-only attack is implemented based on the statistical features of single-pixel intensity values. The two schemes can crack encrypted SPI systems and successfully recover the key containing correct illumination patterns.

Ultra-broadband On-chip Twisted Light Emitter

On-chip twisted light emitters are essential components for orbital angular momentum (OAM) communication devices, which could address the growing demand for high-capacity communication systems by providing an additional degree of freedom for wavelength/frequency division multiplexing (WDM/FDM). Although whispering gallery mode enabled OAM emitters have been shown to possess some advantages, such as being compact and phase accurate, their inherent narrow bandwidth prevents them from being compatible with WDM/FDM techniques. Here, we demonstrate an ultra-broadband multiplexed OAM emitter that utilizes a novel joint path-resonance phase control concept. The emitter has a micron sized radius and nanometer sized features. Coaxial OAM beams are emitted across the entire telecommunication band from 1450 to 1650 nm. We applied the emitter for OAM communication with a data rate of 1.2 Tbit/s assisted by 30-channel optical frequency combs (OFC). The emitter provides a new solution to further increase of the capacity in the OFC communication scenario.
