Intrinsically Honeycomb-patterned Hydrogenated Graphene with Spin Polarized Edge-states

Since the advent of graphene ushered the era of two-dimensional materials, many forms of hydrogenated graphene have been reported, exhibiting diverse properties ranging from a tunable band gap to ferromagnetic ordering. Patterned hydrogenated graphene with micron-scale patterns has been fabricated by lithographic means. Here we report successful millimeter-scale synthesis of an intrinsically honeycomb patterned form of hydrogenated graphene on Ru(0001) by epitaxial growth followed by hydrogenation. Combining scanning tunneling microscopy observations with density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations, we reveal that an atomic-hydrogen layer intercalates between graphene and Ru(0001). The result is a hydrogen honeycomb structure that serves as a template for the final hydrogenation, which converts the graphene into graphane only over the template, yielding honeycomb-patterned hydrogenated graphene (HPHG). In effect, HPHG is a form of patterned graphane. DFT calculations find that the unhydrogenated graphene regions embedded in the patterned graphane exhibit spin-polarized edge states. This type of growth mechanism provides new pathways for the fabrication of intrinsically patterned graphene-based materials.

Magnonic frequency comb through nonlinear magnon-skyrmion scattering

An optical frequency comb consists of a set of discrete and equally spaced frequencies and has found wide applications in the synthesis over broad spectral frequencies of electromagnetic wave and precise optical frequency metrology. Despite the analogies between magnons and photons in many aspects, the analogue of optical frequency comb in magnonic system has not been reported. Here, we theoretically study the magnon-skyrmion interaction and find that magnonic frequency comb (MFC) can be generated above a threshold of driving amplitude, where the nonlinear scattering process involving three magnons prevails. The mode-spacing of the MFC is equal to the breathing-mode frequency of skyrmion and is thus tunable by either electric or magnetic means. The theoretical prediction is verified by micromagnetic simulations and the essential physics can be generalized to a large class of magnetic solitons. Our findings open a new pathway to observe the frequency comb structure in magnonic devices, that may inspire the study of fundamental nonlinear physics in spintronic platform in the future.

Three-dimensional charge density wave and robust zero-bias conductance peak inside the superconducting vortex core of a kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

The transition-metal-based kagome metals provide a versatile platform for correlated topological phases hosting various electronic instabilities. While superconductivity is rare in layered kagome compounds, its interplay with nontrivial topology could offer an engaging space to realize exotic excitations of quasiparticles. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to study a newly discovered Z$_2$ topological kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ with a superconducting ground state. We observe charge modulation associated with the opening of an energy gap near the Fermi level. When across single-unit-cell surface step edges, the intensity of this charge modulation exhibits a π-phase shift, suggesting a three-dimensional 2$\times$2$\times$2 charge density wave ordering. Interestingly, a robust zero-bias conductance peak is observed inside the superconducting vortex core on the Cs 2$\times$2 surfaces that does not split in a large distance when moving away from the vortex center, resembling the Majorana bound states arising from the superconducting Dirac surface states in Bi$_2$Te$_3$/NbSe$_2$ heterostructures. Our findings establish CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ as a promising candidate for realizing exotic excitations at the confluence of nontrivial lattice geometry, topology and multiple electronic orders.

Observation of linearly dispersive edge modes in a magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2

The physical realization of Chern insulators is of fundamental and practical interest, as they are predicted to host the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and topologically protected chiral edge states which can carry dissipationless current. The realization of the QAHE state has however been challenging because of the complex heterostructures and sub-Kelvin temperatures required. Time-reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semimetals, being essentially stacks of Chern insulators with inter-layer coupling, may provide a new platform for the higher temperature realization of robust QAHE edge states. In this work we present a combined scanning tunneling spectroscopy and theoretical investigation of a newly discovered magnetic Weyl semimetal, Co3Sn2S2. Using modeling and numerical simulations we find that chiral edge states can be localized on partially exposed Kagome planes on the surface of a Weyl semimetal. Correspondingly, our STM dI/dV maps on narrow kagome Co3Sn terraces show linearly dispersing quantum well like states, which can be attributed to hybridized chiral edge modes. Our experiment and theory results suggest a new paradigm for studying chiral edge modes in time-reversal breaking Weyl semimetals. More importantly, this work leads a practical route for realizing higher temperature QAHE.

Data-Uncertainty Guided Multi-Phase Learning for Semi-Supervised Object Detection

In this paper, we delve into semi-supervised object detection where unlabeled images are leveraged to break through the upper bound of fully-supervised object detection models. Previous semi-supervised methods based on pseudo labels are severely degenerated by noise and prone to overfit to noisy labels, thus are deficient in learning different unlabeled knowledge well. To address this issue, we propose a data-uncertainty guided multi-phase learning method for semi-supervised object detection. We comprehensively consider divergent types of unlabeled images according to their difficulty levels, utilize them in different phases and ensemble models from different phases together to generate ultimate results. Image uncertainty guided easy data selection and region uncertainty guided RoI Re-weighting are involved in multi-phase learning and enable the detector to concentrate on more certain knowledge. Through extensive experiments on PASCAL VOC and MS COCO, we demonstrate that our method behaves extraordinarily compared to baseline approaches and outperforms them by a large margin, more than 3% on VOC and 2% on COCO.

AIBench Training: Balanced Industry-Standard AI Training Benchmarking

Earlier-stage evaluations of a new AI architecture/system need affordable benchmarks. Only using a few AI component benchmarks like MLPerfalone in the other stages may lead to misleading conclusions. Moreover, the learning dynamics are not well understood, and the benchmarks' shelf-life is short. This paper proposes a balanced benchmarking methodology. We use real-world benchmarks to cover the factors space that impacts the learning dynamics to the most considerable extent. After performing an exhaustive survey on Internet service AI domains, we identify and implement nineteen representative AI tasks with state-of-the-art models. For repeatable performance ranking (RPR subset) and workload characterization (WC subset), we keep two subsets to a minimum for affordability. We contribute by far the most comprehensive AI training benchmark suite. The evaluations show: (1) AIBench Training (v1.1) outperforms MLPerfTraining (v0.7) in terms of diversity and representativeness of model complexity, computational cost, convergent rate, computation, and memory access patterns, and hotspot functions; (2) Against the AIBench full benchmarks, its RPR subset shortens the benchmarking cost by 64%, while maintaining the primary workload characteristics; (3) The performance ranking shows the single-purpose AI accelerator like TPU with the optimized TensorFlowframework performs better than that of GPUs while losing the latter's general support for various AI models. The specification, source code, and performance numbers are available from the AIBench homepage https://www.benchcouncil.org/aibench-training/index.html.

Third-order topological insulator in three-dimensional lattice of magnetic vortices

Recent acoustic and electrical-circuit experiments have reported the third-order (or octupole) topological insulating phase, while its counterpart in classical magnetic systems is yet to be realized. Here we explore the collective dynamics of magnetic vortices in three-dimensional breathing cuboids, and find that the vortex lattice can support zero-dimensional corner states, one-dimensional hinge states, two-dimensional surface states, and three-dimensional bulk states, when the ratio of alternating intralayer and interlayer bond lengths goes beyond a critical value. We show that only the corner states are stable against external frustrations because of the topological protection. Full micromagnetic simulations verify our theoretical predictions with good agreement.

Strong coupling of quantized spin waves in ferromagnetic bilayers

We formulate a strong-coupling theory for perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSWs) in ferromagnetic bilayers with the interlayer exchange coupling (IEC). Employing the Hoffmann boundary condition and the energy-flow continuity across the interface, we show that the PSSWs are still quantized but with non-integral quantum numbers, in sharp contrast to that of a single layer. The magnon-magnon coupling is characterized by the spectrum splitting which is linear with the IEC in the weak-coupling region, but getting saturated in the strong-coupling limit. Analytical predictions are verified by full micromagnetic simulations with good agreement.

Parallel selective nuclear spin addressing for fast high-fidelity quantum gates

Due to their long coherence times, nuclear spins have gained considerable attention as physical qubits. Two-qubit gates between nuclear spins of distinct resonance frequencies can be mediated by electron spins, usually employing a sequence of electron-nuclear gates. Here we present a different approach inspired by, but not limited to, NV centers in diamond and discuss possible applications. To this end we generalize external electron spin control sequences for nuclear spin initialization and hyperpolarization to achieve the simultaneous control of distinct nuclear spins via an electron spin. This approach results in efficient entangling gates that, compared to standard techniques, reduce the gate time by more than 50% when the gate time is limited by off-resonant coupling to other spins, and by up to 22% when the gate time is limited by small electron-nuclear coupling.

Automatic Curriculum Learning With Over-repetition Penalty for Dialogue Policy Learning

Dialogue policy learning based on reinforcement learning is difficult to be applied to real users to train dialogue agents from scratch because of the high cost. User simulators, which choose random user goals for the dialogue agent to train on, have been considered as an affordable substitute for real users. However, this random sampling method ignores the law of human learning, making the learned dialogue policy inefficient and unstable. We propose a novel framework, Automatic Curriculum Learning-based Deep Q-Network (ACL-DQN), which replaces the traditional random sampling method with a teacher policy model to realize the dialogue policy for automatic curriculum learning. The teacher model arranges a meaningful ordered curriculum and automatically adjusts it by monitoring the learning progress of the dialogue agent and the over-repetition penalty without any requirement of prior knowledge. The learning progress of the dialogue agent reflects the relationship between the dialogue agent's ability and the sampled goals' difficulty for sample efficiency. The over-repetition penalty guarantees the sampled diversity. Experiments show that the ACL-DQN significantly improves the effectiveness and stability of dialogue tasks with a statistically significant margin. Furthermore, the framework can be further improved by equipping with different curriculum schedules, which demonstrates that the framework has strong generalizability.

Geometric Electrostatic Particle-In-Cell Algorithm on Unstructured Meshes

We present a geometric Particle-in-Cell (PIC) algorithm on two-dimensional (2D) unstructured meshes for studying electrostatic perturbations in magnetized plasmas. In this method, ions are treated as fully kinetic particles, and electrons are described by the adiabatic response. The PIC method is derived from a discrete variational principle on unstructured meshes. To preserve the geometric structure of the system, the discrete variational principle requires that the electric field is interpolated using Whitney 1-forms, the charge is deposited using Whitney 0-forms, and the electric field is computed by discrete exterior calculus. The algorithm has been applied to study the Ion Bernstein Wave (IBW) in 2D magnetized plasmas. The simulated dispersion relations of the IBW in a rectangular region agree well with theoretical results. In a 2D circular region with the fixed boundary condition, the spectrum and eigenmode structures of the IBW are determined from simulation. We compare the energy conservation property of the geometric PIC algorithm derived from the discrete variational principle with that of previous PIC methods on unstructured meshes. The comparison shows that the new PIC algorithm significantly improves the energy conservation property.

Enumeration of row-increasing tableaux of two-row skew shapes

In this paper, we firstly extend a result of Bonin, Shapiro and Simion by giving the distribution of the major index over generalized Schröder paths. Then by providing a bijection between generalized Schröder paths and row-increasing tableaux of skew shapes with two rows, we obtain the distribution of the major index and the amajor index over these tableaux, which extends a result of Du, Fan and Zhao. We also generalize a result of Pechenik and give the distribution of the major index over increasing tableaux of skew shapes with two rows. Especially, a bijection from row-increasing tableaux with shape $(n,m)$ and maximal value $n+m-k$ to standard Young tableaux with shape $((n-k+1,m-k+1,1^k)/(1^2))$ is obtained.

Metal-to-insulator transition in Pt-doped TiSe$_2$ driven by emergent network of narrow transport channels

Metal-to-insulator transitions (MIT) can be driven by a number of different mechanisms, each resulting in a different type of insulator -- Change in chemical potential can induce a transition from a metal to a band insulator; strong correlations can drive a metal into a Mott insulator with an energy gap; an Anderson transition, on the other hand, due to disorder leads to a localized insulator without a gap in the spectrum. Here we report the discovery of an alternative route for MIT driven by the creation of a network of narrow channels. Transport data on Pt substituted for Ti in TiSe$_2$ shows a dramatic increase of resistivity by five orders of magnitude for few % of Pt substitution, with a power-law dependence of the temperature-dependent resistivity $ρ(T)$. Our scanning tunneling microscopy data show that Pt induces an irregular network of nanometer-thick domain walls (DWs) of charge density wave (CDW) order, which pull charge carriers out of the bulk and into the DWs. While the CDW domains are gapped, the charges confined to the narrow DWs interact strongly, with pseudogap-like suppression in the local density of states, even when they were weakly interacting in the bulk, and scatter at the DW network interconnects thereby generating the highly resistive state. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy spectra exhibit pseudogap behavior corroborating the spatial coexistence of gapped domains and narrow domain walls with excess charge carriers.

Nanoscale Dynamic Readout of a Chemical Redox Process Using Radicals Coupled with Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers in Nanodiamonds

Biocompatible nanoscale probes for sensitive detection of paramagnetic species and molecules associated with their (bio)chemical transformations would provide a desirable tool for a better understanding of cellular redox processes. Here, we describe an analytical tool based on quantum sensing techniques. We magnetically coupled negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in nanodiamonds (NDs) with nitroxide radicals present in a bioinert polymer coating of the NDs. We demonstrated that the T1 spin relaxation time of NV centers is very sensitive to the number of nitroxide radicals, with a resolution down to ~10 spins per ND (detection of approximately $ 10^-23 $ mol in a localized volume). The detection is based on T1 shortening upon the radical attachment and we propose a theoretical model describing this phenomenon. We further show this colloidally stable, water-soluble system can be used dynamically for spatiotemporal readout of a redox chemical process (oxidation of ascorbic acid) occurring near the ND surface in an aqueous environment under ambient conditions.

Robust edge states in magnetic domain-wall racetrack

Controllable artificial pinning is indispensable in numerous domain-wall (DW) devices, such as memory, sensor, logic gate, and neuromorphic computing hardware. The high-accuracy determination of the effective spring constant of the pinning potential, however, remains challenging, because the extrinsic pinning is often mixed up with intrinsic ones caused by materials defects and randomness. Here, we study the collective dynamics of interacting DWs in a racetrack with pinning sites of alternate distances. By mapping the governing equations of DW motion to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and evaluating the quantized Zak phase, we predict two topologically distinct phases in the racetrack. Robust edge state emerges at either one or both ends depending on the parity of the DW number and the ratio of alternating intersite lengths. We show that the in-gap DW oscillation frequency has a fixed value which depends only on the geometrical shape of the pinning notch, and is insensitive to device imperfections and inhomogeneities. We propose to accurately quantify the spring coefficient that equals the square of the robust DW frequency multiplied by its constant mass. Our findings suggest as well that the DW racetrack is an ideal platform to study the topological phase transition.

Spin-wave focusing induced skyrmion generation

We propose a new method to generate magnetic skyrmions through spin-wave focusing in chiral ferromagnets.A lens is constructed to focus spin waves by a curved interface between two ferromagnetic thin films with different perpendicular magnetic anisotropies. Based on the principle of identical magnonic path length, we derive the lens contour that can be either elliptical or hyperbolical depending on the magnon refractive index. Micromagnetic simulations are performed to verify the theoretical design. It is found that under proper condition magnetic skyrmions emerge near the focus point of the lens where the spin-wave intensity has been significantly enhanced. A close investigation shows that a magnetic droplet first forms and then converts to the skyrmion accompanying with a change of topological charge. Phase diagram about the amplitude and duration-time of the exciting field for skyrmion generation is obtained. Our findings would be helpful for designing novel spintronic devices combining the advantages of skyrmionics and magnonics.

Cross-domain Adaptation with Discrepancy Minimization for Text-independent Forensic Speaker Verification

Forensic audio analysis for speaker verification offers unique challenges due to location/scenario uncertainty and diversity mismatch between reference and naturalistic field recordings. The lack of real naturalistic forensic audio corpora with ground-truth speaker identity represents a major challenge in this field. It is also difficult to directly employ small-scale domain-specific data to train complex neural network architectures due to domain mismatch and loss in performance. Alternatively, cross-domain speaker verification for multiple acoustic environments is a challenging task which could advance research in audio forensics. In this study, we introduce a CRSS-Forensics audio dataset collected in multiple acoustic environments. We pre-train a CNN-based network using the VoxCeleb data, followed by an approach which fine-tunes part of the high-level network layers with clean speech from CRSS-Forensics. Based on this fine-tuned model, we align domain-specific distributions in the embedding space with the discrepancy loss and maximum mean discrepancy (MMD). This maintains effective performance on the clean set, while simultaneously generalizes the model to other acoustic domains. From the results, we demonstrate that diverse acoustic environments affect the speaker verification performance, and that our proposed approach of cross-domain adaptation can significantly improve the results in this scenario.

A multi-view approach for Mandarin non-native mispronunciation verification

Traditionally, the performance of non-native mispronunciation verification systems relied on effective phone-level labelling of non-native corpora. In this study, a multi-view approach is proposed to incorporate discriminative feature representations which requires less annotation for non-native mispronunciation verification of Mandarin. Here, models are jointly learned to embed acoustic sequence and multi-source information for speech attributes and bottleneck features. Bidirectional LSTM embedding models with contrastive losses are used to map acoustic sequences and multi-source information into fixed-dimensional embeddings. The distance between acoustic embeddings is taken as the similarity between phones. Accordingly, examples of mispronounced phones are expected to have a small similarity score with their canonical pronunciations. The approach shows improvement over GOP-based approach by +11.23% and single-view approach by +1.47% in diagnostic accuracy for a mispronunciation verification task.
