The typical manners of dynamic crack propagation along the metal/ceramics interfaces: A molecular dynamics study

This letter addresses the issue of interfacial crack propagation mechanisms on various interfaces with using molecular dynamics. Four different interfacial crack propagation manners are recognized by MD simulations: 1, the crack propagates along the interface strictly; 2, the nucleation of a twinning at the crack tip leads to the crack tip blunting; 3, the daughter crack appears ahead of the main crack and then coalesces to the mother crack; 4, the crack tip blunts with stacking fault nucleation at the crack tip. Furthermore, the adhesive strength coefficient λis used to identify the type of the interface. Interface with λ> 0.9 means an ordered interface, and interfacial crack propagates in mode I or mode II. While λ< 0.9 represents a disordered interface, and mode III and mode IV of the interfacial cracks are preferred. This work illustrates the effect of adhesive strength of interface on the mechanism of crack propagation along the interface of metal/ceramics nano-composites.

Empirical Bayes estimation of posterior probabilities of enrichment

To interpret differentially expressed genes or other discovered features, researchers conduct hypothesis tests to determine which biological categories such as those of the Gene Ontology (GO) are enriched in the sense of having differential representation among the discovered features. We study application of better estimators of the local false discovery rate (LFDR), a probability that the biological category has equivalent representation among the preselected features. We identified three promising estimators of the LFDR for detecting differential representation: a semiparametric estimator (SPE), a normalized maximum likelihood estimator (NMLE), and a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE). We found that the MLE performs at least as well as the SPE for on the order of 100 of GO categories even when the ideal number of components in its underlying mixture model is unknown. However, the MLE is unreliable when the number of GO categories is small compared to the number of PMM components. Thus, if the number of categories is on the order of 10, the SPE is a more reliable LFDR estimator. The NMLE depends not only on the data but also on a specified value of the prior probability of differential representation. It is therefore an appropriate LFDR estimator only when the number of GO categories is too small for application of the other methods. For enrichment detection, we recommend estimating the LFDR by the MLE given at least a medium number (~100) of GO categories, by the SPE given a small number of GO categories (~10), and by the NMLE given a very small number (~1) of GO categories.

Carrier-envelope phase measurement from half-cycle high harmonics

We present a method to distinguish the high harmonics generated in individual half-cycle of the driving laser pulse by mixing a weak ultraviolet pulse, enabling one to observe the cutoff of each half-cycle harmonic. We show that the detail information of the driving laser pulse, including the laser intensity, pulse duration and carrier-envelope phase, can be {\it in situ} retrieved from the harmonic spectrogram. In addition, our results show that this method also distinguishes the half-cycle high harmonics for a pulse longer than 10 fs, suggesting a potential to extend the CEP measurement to the multi-cycle regime.
