Activated lone-pair electrons lead to low lattice thermal conductivity: a case study of boron arsenide

Reducing thermal conductivity ($κ$) is an efficient way to boost the thermoelectric performance to achieve direct solid-state conversion to electrical power from thermal energy, which has lots of valuable applications in reusing waste resources. In this study, we propose an effective approach for realizing low $κ$ by introducing lone-pair electrons or making the lone-pair electrons stereochemically active through bond nanodesigning. As a case study, by cutting at the (111) cross section of the three-dimensional cubic boron arsenide (c-BAs), the $κ$ is lowered by more than one order of magnitude in the resultant two-dimensional system of graphene-like BAs (g-BAs) due to the stereochemically activated lone-pair electrons. Similar concept can be also extended to other systems with lone-pair electrons beyond BAs, such as group III-V compounds, where a strong correlation between $κ$ modulation and electronegativity difference for binary compounds is found. Thus, the lone-pair electrons combined with a small electronegativity difference could be the indicator of lowering $κ$ through bond nanodesigning to change the coordination environment. The proposed approach for realizing low $κ$ and the underlying mechanism uncovered in this study would largely benefit the design of thermoelectric devices with improved performance, especially in future researches involving novel materials for energy applications.

Unconventional magnetic anisotropy in one-dimentional Rashba system realized by adsorbing Gd atom on zigzag graphene nanoribbons

The Rashba effect, a spin splitting in electronic band structure, attracts much attention for the potential applications in spintronics with no requirement of external magnetic field. Realizing one-dimensional (1D) Rashba system is a big challenge due to the difficulties of growing high-quality heavy-metal nanowires or introducing strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and broken inversion symmetry in flexible materials. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we propose a pathway to realize the Rashba spin-split by adsorbing Gd atom on zigzag graphene nanoribbons (Gd-ZGNR) and further investigate the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE). Perpendicular MAE and unconventional MAE contributions in k-space are found in the self-assembled Gd-ZGNR system, which present a remarkable Rashba effect (the estimated strength is 1.89 eV Å) attributed to strong SOC (~65.6 meV) and the asymmetric adsorption site at the nanoribbons edge. Moreover, first-order MAE is connected to the intrinsic Rashba effect beyond the traditional second-order MAE, which is confirmed based on the analysis of electronic structures perturbed with SOC in comparison with metastable Gd-ZGNR at central symmetric adsorption site. The dependence of first-order MAE as well as Rashba effect of Gd-ZGNRs on the ribbon width are also examined. This work offers new perspective to achieve 1D Rashba system and provides fundamental understanding on the magnetic anisotropy, which would be of great significance for searching Majorana fermions and promoting the potential applications in spintronics.

Diverse anisotropy of phonon transport in two-dimensional IV-VI compounds: A comparative study

New classes two-dimensional (2D) materials beyond graphene, including layered and non-layered, and their heterostructures, are currently attracting increasing interest due to their promising applications in nanoelectronics, optoelectronics and clean energy, where thermal transport property is one of the fundamental physical parameters. In this paper, we systematically investigated the phonon transport properties of 2D orthorhombic group IV-VI compounds of $GeS$, $GeSe$, $SnS$ and $SnSe$ by solving the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) based on first-principles calculations. Despite the similar puckered (hinge-like) structure along the armchair direction as phosphorene, the four monolayer compounds possess diverse anisotropic properties in many aspects, such as phonon group velocity, Young's modulus and lattice thermal conductivity ($κ$), etc. Especially, the $κ$ along the zigzag and armchair directions of monolayer $GeS$ shows the strongest anisotropy while monolayer $SnS$ and $SnSe$ shows an almost isotropy in phonon transport. The origin of the diverse anisotropy is fully studied and the underlying mechanism is discussed in detail. With limited size, the $κ$ could be effectively lowered, and the anisotropy could be effectively modulated by nanostructuring, which would extend the applications in nanoscale thermoelectrics and thermal management. Our study offers fundamental understanding of the anisotropic phonon transport properties of 2D materials, and would be of significance for further study, modulation and aplications in emerging technologies.

Chandra Studies of the X-ray Gas Properties of Fossil Systems

We study ten galaxy groups and clusters suggested in the literature to be "fossil system (FS)" based on \chandra\ observations. According to the $M_{500}-T$ and $L_{\rm X}-T$ relations, the gas properties of FSs are not physically distinct from ordinary galaxy groups or clusters. We also first study the $f_{\rm gas,~2500}-T$ relation and find that the FS exhibits same as ordinary systems. The gas densities of FSs within $0.1r_{200}$, are $\sim 10^{-3}$ cm$^{-3}$, which is the same order as galaxy clusters. The entropies within $0.1r_{200}$ ($S_{0.1r_{200}}$) of FSs are systematically lower than those in ordinary galaxy groups which is consistent with previous report, but we find their $S_{0.1r_{200}}-T$ relation is more similar to galaxy clusters. The derived mass profiles of FSs are consistent with the Navarro, Frenk, \& White model in $(0.1-1)r_{200}$, and the relation between scale radius $r_{\rm s}$ and characteristic mass density $ta_{\rm c}$ indicates the self-similarity of dark matter halos of FSs. The range of $r_{\rm s}$ and $ta_{\rm c}$ of FSs are also close to those of galaxy clusters. Therefore, FSs share more common characteristics with galaxy clusters. The special birth place of the FS makes it as a distinct galaxy system type.

Anisotropic intrinsic lattice thermal conductivity of phosphorene from first principles

Phosphorene, the single layer counterpart of black phosphorus, is a novel two-dimensional semiconductor with high carrier mobility and a large fundamental direct band gap, which has attracted tremendous interest recently. Its potential applications in nano-electronics and thermoelectrics call for a fundamental study of the phonon transport. Here, we calculate the intrinsic lattice thermal conductivity of phosphorene by solving the phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) based on first-principles calculations. The thermal conductivity of phosphorene at $300\,\mathrm{K}$ is $30.15\,\mathrm{Wm^{-1}K^{-1}}$ (zigzag) and $13.65\,\mathrm{Wm^{-1}K^{-1}}$ (armchair), showing an obvious anisotropy along different directions. The calculated thermal conductivity fits perfectly to the inverse relation with temperature when the temperature is higher than Debye temperature ($Θ_D = 278.66\,\mathrm{K}$). In comparison to graphene, the minor contribution around $5\%$ of the ZA mode is responsible for the low thermal conductivity of phosphorene. In addition, the representative mean free path (MFP), a critical size for phonon transport, is also obtained.

Energetics and magnetism of Co-doped GaN(0001) surfaces: A first-principles stud

A comprehensive first-principles study of the energetics, electronic and magnetic properties of Co-doped GaN(0001) thin films are presented and the effect of surface structure on the magnetic coupling between Co atoms is demonstrated. It is found that Co atoms prefer to substitute the surface Ga sites in different growth conditions. In particular, a CoN/GaN interface structure with Co atoms replacing the first Ga layer is preferred under N-rich and moderately Ga-rich conditions, while CoGax/GaN interface is found to be energetically stable under extremely Ga-rich conditions. It's worth noted that the antiferromagnetic coupling between Co atoms is favorable in clean GaN(0001) surface, but the existence of FM would be expected to occur as Co concentration increased in Ga-bilayer GaN(0001) surface. Our study provides the theoretical understanding for experimental research on Co-doped GaN films and might promise the Co:GaN system potential applications in spin injection devices.

Hinge-like structure induced unusual properties of black phosphorus and new strategies to improve the thermoelectric performance

We systematically investigated the geometric, electronic and thermoelectric (TE) properties of bulk black phosphorus (BP) under strain. The hinge-like structure of BP brings unusual mechanical responses such as anisotropic Young's modulus and negative Poisson's ratio. A sensitive electronic structure of BP makes it transform among metal, direct and indirect semiconductors under strain. The maximal figure of merit $ZT$ of BP is found to be 0.72 at $800\,\mathrm{K}$ that could be enhanced to 0.87 by exerting an appropriate strain, revealing BP could be a potential medium-high temperature TE material. Such strain-induced enhancements of TE performance are often observed to occur at the boundary of the direct-indirect band gap transition, which can be attributed to the increase of degeneracy of energy valleys at the transition point. By comparing the structure of BP with SnSe, a family of potential TE materials with hinge-like structure are suggested. This study not only exposes various novel properties of BP under strain, but also proposes effective strategies to seek for better TE materials.

Chandra Study of the Massive and Distant Galaxy Cluster SDSS J0150-1005

In this work, we present a high spatial resolution study of a fossil cluster, SDSS J0150-1005 ($z \simeq 0.364$), based on the imaging spectroscopic analysis of \chandra\ observation. The \chandra\ X-ray image shows a relax and symmetric morphology, which indicates SDSS J0150-1005 is a well-developed galaxy cluster with no sign of recent merger. Its global gas temperature is 5.73 $\pm$ 0.80 keV, and the virial mass is 6.23 $\pm$ 1.34 $\times 10^{14} $ M$_{\odot}$ according to the isothermal model. Compared with polytropic temperature model, the mass calculated based on isothermal model overestimates 49 $\pm$ 11%. The central gas entropy, $S_{0.1r_{200}} = 143.9 \pm 18.3$ keV cm$^2$, is significantly lower than average value of the normal galaxy clusters with similar temperatures. Our results indicate the early formation epoch of SDSS J0150-1005.

Chandra Observation of a Weak Shock in the Galaxy Cluster A2556

Based on a 21.5 ks \chandra\ observation of A2556, we identify an edge on the surface brightness profile (SBP) at about 160$h_{71}^{-1}$ kpc northeast of the cluster center, and it corresponds to a shock front whose Mach number $\mathcal{M}$ is calculated to be $1.25_{-0.03}^{+0.02}$. No prominent substructure, such as sub-cluster, is found in either optical or X-ray band that can be associated with the edge, suggesting that the conventional super-sonic motion mechanism may not work in this case. As an alternative solution, we propose that the nonlinear steepening of acoustic wave, which is induced by the turbulence of the ICM at the core of the cluster, can be used to explain the origin of the shock front. Although nonlinear steepening weak shock is expected to occur frequently in clusters, why it is rarely observed still remains a question that requires further investigation, including both deeper X-ray observation and extensive theoretical studies.

Two-Phase ICM in the Central Region of the Rich Cluster of Galaxies Abell 1795: A Joint Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Suzaku View

Based on a detailed analysis of the high-quality Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Suzaku data of the X-ray bright cluster of galaxies Abell 1795, we report clear evidence for a two-phase intracluster medium (ICM) structure, which consists of a cool (with a temperature T = 2.0-2.2 keV) and a hot (T = 5.0-5.7 keV) component that coexist and dominate the X-ray emission at least in the central 80 kpc. A third weak emission component (T = 0.8 keV) is also detected within the innermost 144 kpc and is ascribed to a portion of inter-stellar medium (ISM) of the cD galaxy. Deprojected spectral analysis reveals flat radial temperature distributions for both the hot phase and cool phase components. These results are consistent with the ASCA measurements reported in Xu et al. (1998), and resemble the previous findings for the Centaurus cluster (e.g., Takahashi et al. 2009). By analyzing the emission measure ratio and gas metal abundance maps created from the Chandra data, we find that the cool phase component is more metal-enriched than the hot phase one in 50-100 kpc region, which agrees with that found in M87 (Simionescu et al. 2008). The coexistence of the cool phase and hot phase ICM cannot be realized by bubble uplifting from active galactic nuclei (AGN) alone. Instead, the two-phase ICM properties are better reconciled with a cD corona model (Makishima et al. 2001). (Abridged)

A Joint Chandra and XMM-Newton View of Abell 3158: Massive Off-Centre Cool Gas Clump As A Robust Diagnostic of Merger Stage

By analysing the Chandra and XMM-Newton archived data of the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 3158, which was reported to possess a relatively regular, relaxed morphology in the X-ray band in previous works, we identify a bow edge-shaped discontinuity in the X-ray surface brightness distribution at about $120h_{71}^{-1}$ kpc west of the X-ray peak. This feature is found to be associated with a massive, off-centre cool gas clump, and actually forms the west boundary of the cool clump. We find that the cool gas clump is moving at a subsonic velocity of ~700 km/s toward west on the sky plane. We exclude the possibility that this cool clump was formed by local inhomogeneous radiative cooling in the intra-cluster medium, due to the effectiveness of the thermal conduction on the time-scale of $\sim 0.3$ Gyr. Since no evidence for central AGN activity has been found in Abell 3158, and this cool clump bears many similarities to the off-centre cool gas clumps detected in other merging clusters in terms of their mass, size, location, and thermal properties (e.g. lower temperature and higher abundance as compared with the environment), we speculate that the cool clump in Abell 3158 was caused by a merger event, and is the remnant of the original central cool-core of the main cluster or the infalling sub-cluster. This idea is supported not only by the study of line-of-sight velocity distribution of the cluster member galaxies, but also by the study of gas entropy-temperature correlation. This example shows that the appearance of such massive, off-centre cool gas clumps can be used to diagnose the dynamical state of a cluster, especially when prominent shocks and cold fronts are absent.

Metal Enrichment via Ram Pressure Stripping in the IGM of the Compact Galaxy Group RGH 80

By creating and analyzing the two dimensional gas temperature and abundance maps of the RGH 80 compact galaxy group with the high-quality Chandra data, we detect a high-abundance ($\simeq 0.7$ $Z_\odot$) arc, where the metal abundance is significantly higher than the surrounding regions by $\simeq 0.3$ Z_\odot$. This structure shows tight spatial correlations with the member galaxy PGC 046529, as well as with the arm-like feature identified on the X-ray image in the previous work of Randall et al. (2009). Since no apparent signature of AGN activity is found associated with PGC 046529 in multi-band observations, and the gas temperature, metallicity, and mass of the high-abundance arc resemble those of the ISM of typical early-type galaxies, we conclude that this high-abundance structure is the remnant of the ISM of PGC 046529, which was stripped out of the galaxy by ram pressure stripping due to the motion of PGC 046529 in RGH 80. This novel case shows that ram pressure stripping can work efficiently in the metal enrichment process in galaxy groups, as it can in galaxy clusters.

A Chandra Study of Temperature Substructures in Intermediate-Redshift Galaxy Clusters

By analyzing the gas temperature maps created from the Chandra archive data, we reveal the prevailing existence of temperature substructures on ~100 kpc scales in the central regions of nine intermediate-redshift (z~0.1) galaxy clusters, which resemble those found in the Virgo and Coma Clusters. Each substructure contains a clump of hot plasma whose temperature is about 2-3 keV higher than the environment, corresponding to an excess thermal energy of ~1E58-1E60 erg per clump. Since if there were no significant non-gravitational heating sources, these substructures would have perished in 1E8-1E9 yrs due to thermal conduction and turbulent flows, whose velocity is found to range from about 200 to 400 km/s, we conclude that the substructures cannot be created and sustained by inhomogeneous radiative cooling. We also eliminate the possibilities that the temperature substructures are caused by supernova explosions, or by the non-thermal X-ray emission due to the inverse-Comptonization of the CMB photons. By calculating the rising time of AGN-induced buoyant bubbles, we speculate that the intermittent AGN outbursts (~ 1E60 erg per burst) may have played a crucial role in the forming of the high temperature substructures. Our results are supported by recent study of McNamara & Nulsen (2007), posing a tight observational constraint on future theoretical and numerical studies.
