Second-harmonic generation with a 440,000% W-1 conversion efficiency in a lithium niobate microcavity without periodic poling

Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) enables extremely high-efficiency second-order nonlinear optical effects due to large nonlinear coefficient d33 and strong optical field localization. Here, we first designed and fabricated a pulley-waveguide-coupled microring resonator with an intrinsic quality factor above 9.4 x10^5 on the reverse-polarized double-layer X-cut TFLN. In such a TFLN resonator without fine domain structures, second harmonic generation with an absolute (normalized) conversion efficiency of 30% (440,000% W-1), comparable to that in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) microring resonators, was realized with a sub-microwatt continuous pump. This work reduces the dependence of high-efficiency nonlinear frequency conversion on PPLN microcavities that are difficult to prepare.

Second harmonic and cascaded third harmonic generation in generalized quasi-periodic poled lithium niobate waveguides

Lithium niobate (LN) thin film has recently emerged as an important platform for nonlinear optical investigations for its large $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear coefficients and ability of light localization. In this paper, we report the first fabrication of LN on insulator (LNOI) ridge waveguides with generalized quasi-periodic poled superlattices using the electric field polarization technique and microfabrication techniques. Benefiting from the abundant reciprocal vectors, we observed efficient second-harmonic and cascaded third-harmonic signals in the same device, with the normalized conversion efficiency 1735% W$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$ and 0.41% W$^{-2}$cm$^{-4}$, respectively. This work opens a new direction of nonlinear integrated photonics based on LN thin film.

Integrated LNOI single-mode lasers by Vernier effect

Microcavity lasers based on erbium-doped lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI), which are key devices for LNOI integrated photonics, have attracted much attention recently. In this Letter, we report the realization of a C-band single-mode laser using Vernier effect in two coupled Erbium-doped LNOI microrings with different radii under the pump of a 980-nm continuous laser. The laser, operating stably over a large range of pumping power, has a pump threshold of ~200 μW and a side-mode suppression ratio exceeding 26 dB. The high-performance LNOI single-mode laser will promote the development of lithium niobate integrated photonics.

On-chip erbium-doped lithium niobate waveguide amplifiers

Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI), as an emerging and promising optical integration platform, faces shortages of on-chip active devices including lasers and amplifiers. Here, we report the fabrication on-chip erbium-doped LNOI waveguide amplifiers based on electron beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching. A net internal gain of ~30 dB/cm in communication band was achieved in the fabricated waveguide amplifiers under the pump of a 974-nm continuous laser. This work develops new active devices on LNOI and will promote the development of LNOI integrated photonics.

Broadband highly efficient nonlinear optical processes in on-chip integrated lithium niobate microdisk resonators of Q-factor above 10^8

We demonstrated broadband highly efficient optical nonlinear processes in on-chip integrated lithium niobate (LN) microdisk resonators. The Q factors of the micro-resonators fabricated by femtosecond laser writing and chemo-mechanical polishing are reliably above 10^8, approaching the intrinsic material absorption limit of LN. Broadband nonlinear processes, including optical parametric oscillation (OPO), second harmonic generation (SHG), third harmonic generation, and fourth harmonic generation, were observed with ultrahigh efficiencies in the same LN microdisk without introducing domain inversion, thanks to the natural quasi phase-matching and the dense spectral modes of the X-cut LN microdisk with millimeter diameter. The threshold of OPO and the absolute conversion efficiency of SHG are 19.6 microwatt and 66%, both surpass the state-of-the-art values among on-chip LN micro-resonators demonstrated so far. The broadband and highly efficient nonlinear frequency conversions achieved with the ultrahigh-Q LN microdisk resonators promise high-density integration of nonlinear photonic devices such as frequency convertors and entangled photon sources.

Highly-efficient second and third harmonic generation in a monocrystalline lithium niobate microresonator

Nonlinear optics in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to strong confinement of the light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, giving rise to enhancement of the nonlinear interactions of light with the resonator material. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in an on-chip monocrystalline lithium niobate (LN) microresonator. Benefitting from a cyclic phase matching scheme for the transverse-electric WGMs, nonlinear wavelength conversion utilizing the largest second-order nonlinear coefficient d33, which has not been demonstrated until now despite of its obvious advantage, is successfully achieved in an X-cut LN microresonator. We obtain high conversion efficiencies in not only the SHG (3.8% mW^-1) but also the THG (0.3% mW^-2) realized through a cascaded sum-frequency process. Our results represent a major step toward the classical and quantum photonic integrated circuits.
