Platonic representation of foundation machine learning interatomic potentials

Foundation machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) are trained on overlapping chemical spaces, yet their latent representations remain model-specific. Here, we show that independently developed MLIPs exhibit statistically consistent geometric organisation of atomic environments, which we term the Platonic representation. By projecting embeddings relative to a set of atomic anchors, we unify the latent spaces of seven MLIPs (spanning equivariant, non-equivariant, conservative, and non-conservative architectures) into a common metric space that preserves chemical periodicity and structural invariants. This unified framework enables direct cross-model optimal transport, interpretable embedding arithmetic, and the detection of representational biases. Furthermore, we demonstrate that geometric distortions in this space can indicate physical prediction failures, including symmetry breaking and incorrect phonon dispersions. Our results show that the latent spaces of diverse MLIPs present consistent statistical geometry shaped by shared physical and chemical constraints, suggesting that the Platonic representation offers a practical route toward interoperable, comparable, and interpretable foundation models for materials science.

Structural Dynamics Descriptors for Metal Halide Perovskites

Metal halide perovskites have shown extraordinary performance in solar energy conversion technologies. They have been classified as "soft semiconductors" due to their flexible corner-sharing octahedral networks and polymorphous nature. Understanding the local and average structures continues to be challenging for both modelling and experiments. Here, we report the quantitative analysis of structural dynamics in time and space from molecular dynamics simulations of perovskite crystals. The compact descriptors provided cover a wide variety of structural properties, including octahedral tilting and distortion, local lattice parameters, molecular orientations, as well as their spatial correlation. To validate our methods, we have trained a machine learning force field (MLFF) for methylammonium lead bromide (CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$) using an on-the-fly training approach with Gaussian process regression. The known stable phases are reproduced and we find an additional symmetry-breaking effect in the cubic and tetragonal phases close to the phase transition temperature. To test the implementation for large trajectories, we also apply it to 69,120 atom simulations for CsPbI$_3$ based on an MLFF developed using the atomic cluster expansion formalism. The structural dynamics descriptors and Python toolkit are general to perovskites and readily transferable to more complex compositions.

Inhomogeneous Defect Distribution in Mixed-Polytype Metal Halide Perovskites

The competition between corner, edge and face-sharing octahedral networks is a cause of phase inhomogeneity in metal halide perovskite thin-films. Here we probe the charged iodine vacancy distribution and transport at the junction between cubic and hexagonal polytypes of CsPbI$_3$ from first-principles materials modelling. We predict a lower defect formation energy in the face-sharing regions, which correlates with a longer Pb$-$I bond length and causes a million-fold increase in local defect concentration. These defects are predicted to be more mobile in the face-sharing regions with a reduced activation energy for vacancy-mediated diffusion. We conclude that hexagonal phase inclusions or interfaces will act as defect sinks that could trap charges and enhance current-voltage hysteresis in perovskite-based solar cells and electrical devices.

Transfer and evolution of structured polarization in a double-V atomic system

We numerically investigate the transfer of optical information from a vector-vortex control beam to an unstructured probe beam, as mediated by an atomic vapour. The right and left circular components of these beams drive the atomic transitions of a double-$V$ system, with the atoms acting as a spatially varying circular birefringent medium. Modelling the propagation of the light fields, we find that, for short distances, the vectorial light structure is transferred from the control field to the probe. However, for larger propagation lengths, diffraction causes the circular components of the probe field to spatially separate. We model this system for the D1 line of cold rubidium atoms. Our investigation is a first step to investigating the coupled dynamics of internal and external degrees of freedom of atoms in four wave mixing.

Lone pair driven anisotropy in antimony chalcogenide semiconductors

Antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) and selenide (Sb2Se3) have emerged as promising earth-abundant alternatives among thin-film photovoltaic compounds. A distinguishing feature of these materials is their anisotropic crystal structures, which are composed of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) [Sb4X6]n ribbons. The interaction between ribbons has been reported to be van der Waals (vdW) in nature and Sb2X3 are thus commonly classified in the literature as 1D semiconductors. However, based on first-principles calculations, here we show that inter-ribbon interactions are present in Sb2X3 beyond the vdW regime. The origin of the anisotropic structures is related to the stereochemical activity of the Sb 5s lone pair according to electronic structure analysis. The impacts of structural anisotropy on the electronic and optical properties are further examined, including the presence of higher dimensional Fermi surfaces for charge carrier transport. Our study provides guidelines for optimising the performance of Sb2X3-based solar cells via device structuring based on the underlying crystal anisotropy.

Stability Engineering of Halide Perovskite via Machine Learning

Perovskite stability is of the core importance and difficulty in current research and application of perovskite solar cells. Nevertheless, over the past century, the formability and stability of perovskite still relied on simplified factor based on human knowledge, such as the commonly used tolerance factor t. Combining machine learning (ML) with first-principles density functional calculations, we proposed a strategy to firstly calculate the decomposition energies, considered to be closely related to thermodynamic stability, of 354 kinds halide perovskites, establish the machine learning relationship between decomposition energy and compositional ionic radius and investigate the stabilities of 14,190 halide double perovskites. The ML-predicted results enable us to rediscover a series of stable rare earth metal halide perovskites (up to ~1000 kinds), indicating the generalization of this model and further provide elemental and concentration suggestion for improving the stability of mixed perovskite.

Anisotropic carrier mobility of distorted Dirac cones: theory and application

We have theoretically investigated the intrinsic carrier mobility in semimetals with distorted Dirac cones under both longitudinal and transverse acoustic phonon scattering. An analytic formula for the carrier mobility was obtained. It shows that tilting significantly reduces the mobility. The theory was then applied to 8B-Pmmn borophene and borophane (fully hydrogenated borophene), both of which have tilted Dirac cones. The predicted carrier mobilities in 8B-Pmmn borophene at room temperature are both higher than that in graphene. For borophane, despite its superhigh Fermi velocity, the carrier mobility is lower than that in 8B-Pmmn owing to its smaller elastic constant under shear strain.
