Dissipative Floquet Majorana modes in proximity-induced topological superconductors

We study a realistic Floquet topological superconductor, a periodically driven nanowire proximitized to an equilibrium s-wave superconductor. Due to both strong energy and density fluctuations caused from the superconducting proximity effect, the Floquet Majorana wire becomes dissipative. We show that the Floquet band structure is still preserved in this dissipative system. In particular, we find that both the Floquet Majorana zero and pi modes can no longer be simply described by the Floquet topological band theory. We also propose an effective model to simplify the calculation of the lifetime of these Floquet Majoranas, and find that the lifetime can be engineered by the external driving field.

Fermion doubling theorems in 2D non-Hermitian systems for Fermi points and exceptional points

The fermion doubling theorem plays a pivotal role in Hermitian topological materials. It states, for example, that Weyl points must come in pairs in three-dimensional semimetals. Here, we present an extension of the doubling theorem to non-Hermitian lattice Hamiltonians. We focus on two-dimensional non-Hermitian systems without any symmetry constraints, which can host two different types of topological point nodes, namely, (i) Fermi points and (ii) exceptional points. We show that these two types of protected point nodes obey doubling theorems, which require that the point nodes come in pairs. To prove the doubling theorem for exceptional points, we introduce a generalized winding number invariant, which we call the discriminant number. Importantly, this invariant is applicable to any two-dimensional non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with exceptional points of arbitrary order, and moreover can also be used to characterize non-defective degeneracy points. Furthermore, we show that a surface of a three-dimensional system can violate the non-Hermitian doubling theorems, which implies unusual bulk physics.

Non-perturbative Breakdown of Bloch's Theorem and Hermitian Skin Effects

In conventional Hermitian systems with the open boundary condition, Bloch's theorem is perturbatively broken down, which means although the crystal momentum is not a good quantum number, the eigenstates are the superposition of several extended Bloch waves. In this paper, we show that Bloch's theorem can be non-perturbatively broken down in some Hermitian Bosonic systems. The quasiparticles of the system are the superposition of localized non-Bloch waves, which are characterized by the complex momentum whose imaginary part determines the localization properties. Our work is a Hermitian generalization of the non-Hermitian skin effect, although they share the same mechanism.

Non-Hermitian bulk-boundary correspondence and auxiliary generalized Brillouin zone theory

We provide a systematic and self-consistent method to calculate the generalized Brillouin Zone (GBZ) analytically in one dimensional non-Hermitian systems, which helps us to understand the non-Hermitian bulk-boundary correspondence. In general, a n-band non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is constituted by n distinct sub-GBZs, each of which is a piecewise analytic closed loop. Based on the concept of resultant, we can show that all the analytic properties of the GBZ can be characterized by an algebraic equation, the solution of which in the complex plane is dubbed as auxiliary GBZ (aGBZ). We also provide a systematic method to obtain the GBZ from aGBZ. Two physical applications are also discussed. Our method provides an analytic approach to the spectral problem of open boundary non-Hermitian systems in the thermodynamic limit.

Non-Hermitian skin modes induced by on-site dissipations and chiral tunneling effect

In this paper, we study the conditions under which on-site dissipations can induce non-Hermitian skin modes in non-Hermitian systems. When the original Hermitian Hamiltonian has spinless time-reversal symmetry, it is impossible to have skin modes; on the other hand, if the Hermitian Hamiltonian has spinful time-reversal symmetry, skin modes can be induced by on-site dissipations under certain circumstance. As a concrete example, we employ the Rice-Mele model to illustrate our results. Furthermore, we predict that the skin modes can be detected by the chiral tunneling effect, that is, the tunneling favors the direction where the skin modes are localized. Our work reveals a no-go theorem for the emergence of skin modes, and paves the way for searching for quantum systems with skin modes and studying their novel physical responses.

Correspondence between winding numbers and skin modes in non-hermitian systems

We establish exact relations between the winding of "energy" (eigenvalue of Hamiltonian) on the complex plane as momentum traverses the Brillouin zone with periodic boundary condition, and the presence of "skin modes" with open boundary condition in non-hermitian systems. We show that the nonzero winding with respect to any complex reference energy leads to the presence of skin modes, and vice versa. We also show that both the nonzero winding and the presence of skin modes share the common physical origin that is the non-vanishing current through the system.

The Bulk-boundary Correspondence in Non-Hermitian Hopf-link Exceptional Line Semimetals

We consider a 3-dimensional (3D) non-Hermitian exceptional line semimetal model and take open boundary conditions in x, y, and z directions separately. In each case, we calculate the parameter regions where the bulk-boundary correspondence is broken. The breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence is manifested by the deviation from unit circles of generalized Brillouin zones (GBZ) and the discrepancy between spectra calculated with open boundary conditions (OBC) and periodic boundary conditions (PBC). The consistency between OBC and PBC spectra can be recovered if the PBC spectra are calculated with GBZs. We use both unit-circle Brillouin zones (BZ) and GBZs to plot the topological phase diagrams. The systematic analysis of the differences between the two phase diagrams suggests that it is necessary to use GBZ to characterize the bulk-boundary correspondence of non-Hermitian models.

Helical damping and anomalous critical non-Hermitian skin effect

Non-Hermitian skin effect and critical skin effect are unique features of non-Hermitian systems. In this Letter, we study an open system with its dynamics of single-particle correlation function effectively dominated by a non-Hermitian damping matrix, which exhibits $\mathbb{Z}_2$ skin effect, and uncover the existence of a novel phenomenon of helical damping. When adding perturbations that break anomalous time reversal symmetry to the system, the critical skin effect occurs, which causes the disappearance of the helical damping in the thermodynamic limit although it can exist in small size systems. We also demonstrate the existence of anomalous critical skin effect when we couple two identical systems with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ skin effect. With the help of non-Bloch band theory, we unveil that the change of generalized Brillouin zone equation is the necessary condition of critical skin effect.

Non-Hermitian Hopf-Link Exceptional Line Semimetals

We study a new class of non-Hermitian topological phases in three dimension in the absence of any symmetry, where the topological robust band degeneracies are Hopf-link exceptional lines. As a concrete example, we investigate the non-Hermitian band structures of nodal line semimetals under non-Hermitian perturbations, where the Fermi surfaces can transit from 1d nodal lines to 2d twisting surfaces with Hopf-link boundaries when the winding number defined along the nodal line is $\pm 1$. The linking numbers of these linked exceptional line phases are also proposed, based on the integral of Chern-Simons form over the Brillouin zone.

Jones polynomial and knot transitions in topological semimetals

Topological nodal line semimetals host stable chained, linked, or knotted line degeneracies in momentum space protected by symmetries. In this paper, we use the Jones polynomial as a general topological invariant to capture the global knot topology of the nodal lines. We show that every possible change in Jones polynomial is attributed to the local evolutions around every point where two nodal lines touch. As an application of our theory, we show that nodal chain semimetals with four touching points can evolve to a Hopf-link. We extend our theory to 3D non-Hermitian multi-band exceptional line semimetals.

i-Josephson Junction as Topological Superconductor

We show that the time reversal symmetry inevitably breaks in a superconducting Josephson junction formed by two superconductors with different pairing symmetries dubbed as i-Josephson junction. While the leading conventional Josephson coupling vanishes in such an i-Josephson junction, the second order coupling from tunneling always generates chiral superconductivity orders with broken time reversal symmetry. Josephson frequency in the i-junction is doubled, namely $ω= 4eV /h$. The result provides a way to engineer topological superconductivity such as the d + id' -wave superconducting state characterized by a nonzero Chern number.
