ECC Analyzer: Extract Trading Signal from Earnings Conference Calls using Large Language Model for Stock Performance Prediction

In the realm of financial analytics, leveraging unstructured data, such as earnings conference calls (ECCs), to forecast stock volatility is a critical challenge that has attracted both academics and investors. While previous studies have used multimodal deep learning-based models to obtain a general view of ECCs for volatility predicting, they often fail to capture detailed, complex information. Our research introduces a novel framework: \textbf{ECC Analyzer}, which utilizes large language models (LLMs) to extract richer, more predictive content from ECCs to aid the model's prediction performance. We use the pre-trained large models to extract textual and audio features from ECCs and implement a hierarchical information extraction strategy to extract more fine-grained information. This strategy first extracts paragraph-level general information by summarizing the text and then extracts fine-grained focus sentences using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). These features are then fused through multimodal feature fusion to perform volatility prediction. Experimental results demonstrate that our model outperforms traditional analytical benchmarks, confirming the effectiveness of advanced LLM techniques in financial analysis.

Snap and Diagnose: An Advanced Multimodal Retrieval System for Identifying Plant Diseases in the Wild

Plant disease recognition is a critical task that ensures crop health and mitigates the damage caused by diseases. A handy tool that enables farmers to receive a diagnosis based on query pictures or the text description of suspicious plants is in high demand for initiating treatment before potential diseases spread further. In this paper, we develop a multimodal plant disease image retrieval system to support disease search based on either image or text prompts. Specifically, we utilize the largest in-the-wild plant disease dataset PlantWild, which includes over 18,000 images across 89 categories, to provide a comprehensive view of potential diseases relating to the query. Furthermore, cross-modal retrieval is achieved in the developed system, facilitated by a novel CLIP-based vision-language model that encodes both disease descriptions and disease images into the same latent space. Built on top of the retriever, our retrieval system allows users to upload either plant disease images or disease descriptions to retrieve the corresponding images with similar characteristics from the disease dataset to suggest candidate diseases for end users' consideration.

Flexible Beam Coverage Optimization for Movable-Antenna Array

Fluid antennas (FAs) and movable antennas (MAs) have attracted increasing attention in wireless communications recently. As compared to the conventional fixed-position antennas (FPAs), their geometry can be dynamically reconfigured, such that more flexible beamforming can be achieved for signal coverage and/or interference nulling. In this paper, we investigate the use of MAs to achieve uniform coverage for multiple regions with arbitrary number and width in the spatial domain. In particular, we aim to jointly optimize the MAs weights and positions within a linear array to maximize the minimum beam gain over the desired spatial regions. However, the resulting problem is non-convex and difficult to be optimally solved. To tackle this difficulty, we propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution, where the MAs weights and positions are alternately optimized by applying successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. Numerical results show that our proposed MAbased beam coverage scheme can achieve much better performance than conventional FPAs.

Joint Beamforming and Antenna Position Optimization for Movable Antenna-Assisted Spectrum Sharing

Fluid antennas (FAs) and movable antennas (MAs) have drawn increasing attention in wireless communications recently due to their ability to create favorable channel conditions via local antenna movement within a confined region. In this letter, we advance their application for cognitive radio to facilitate efficient spectrum sharing between primary and secondary communication systems. In particular, we aim to jointly optimize the transmit beamforming and MA positions at a secondary transmitter (ST) to maximize the received signal power at a secondary receiver (SR) subject to the constraints on its imposed co-channel interference power with multiple primary receivers (PRs). However, such an optimization problem is difficult to be optimally solved due to the highly nonlinear functions of the received signal/interference power at the SR/all PRs in terms of the MA positions. To drive useful insights, we first perform theoretical analyses to unveil MAs' capability to achieve maximum-ratio transmission with the SR and effective interference mitigation for all PRs at the same time. To solve the MA position optimization problem, we propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed algorithms can significantly outperform the conventional fixed-position antennas (FPAs) and other baseline schemes.

ISAC-Enabled Beam Alignment for Terahertz Networks: Scheme Design and Coverage Analysis

As a key pillar technology for the future 6G networks, Terahertz (THz) communications can provide high-capacity transmissions, but suffers from severe propagation loss and line-of-sight (LoS) blockage that limits the network coverage. Narrow beams are required to compensate for the loss, but they in turn bring in beam misalignment challenge and degrade the THz network coverage. The high sensing resolution of THz signals enables integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) technology to assist the LoS blockage and user mobility-induced beam misalignment, enhancing THz network coverage. Based on the 5G beam management, we propose a joint synchronization signal block (SSB) and reference signal (RS)-based sensing (JSRS) scheme to assist beam alignment. JSRS enables a predict-and-prevent procedure that provides early interventions for timely beam switches. To maximize performance of JSRS, we provide an optimal sensing signal insertion and time-to-frequency allocation to improve the joint range and velocity resolutions. We derive the coverage probability of the JSRS-enabled network to evaluate its abilities in beam misalignment reduction and coverage enhancement. The expression also instructs the network density deployment and beamwidth selection. Numerical results show that the JSRS scheme is effective and highly compatible with the 5G air interface. Averaged in the tested urban use cases, JSRS achieves near-ideal performance and reduces around 80% of beam misalignment, and enhances the coverage probability by about 75%, compared to the network with 5G-required positioning ability.

The Blessing of Strategic Customers in Personalized Pricing

We consider a feature-based personalized pricing problem in which the buyer is strategic: given the seller's pricing policy, the buyer can augment the features that they reveal to the seller to obtain a low price for the product. We model the seller's pricing problem as a stochastic program over an infinite-dimensional space of pricing policies where the radii by which the buyer can perturb the features are strictly positive. We establish that the sample average approximation of this problem is asymptotically consistent; that is, we prove that the objective value of the sample average approximation converges almost surely to the objective value of the stochastic problem as the number of samples tends to infinity under mild technical assumptions. This consistency guarantee thus shows that incorporating strategic consumer behavior into a data-driven pricing problem can, in addition to making the pricing problem more realistic, also help prevent overfitting.

Phononic materials with effectively scale-separated hierarchical features using interpretable machine learning

Manipulating the dispersive characteristics of vibrational waves is beneficial for many applications, e.g., high-precision instruments. architected hierarchical phononic materials have sparked promise tunability of elastodynamic waves and vibrations over multiple frequency ranges. In this article, hierarchical unit-cells are obtained, where features at each length scale result in a band gap within a targeted frequency range. Our novel approach, the ``hierarchical unit-cell template method,'' is an interpretable machine-learning approach that uncovers global unit-cell shape/topology patterns corresponding to predefined band-gap objectives. A scale-separation effect is observed where the coarse-scale band-gap objective is mostly unaffected by the fine-scale features despite the closeness of their length scales, thus enabling an efficient hierarchical algorithm. Moreover, the hierarchical patterns revealed are not predefined or self-similar hierarchies as common in current hierarchical phononic materials. Thus, our approach offers a flexible and efficient method for the exploration of new regions in the hierarchical design space, extracting minimal effective patterns for inverse design in applications targeting multiple frequency ranges.

Benchmarking In-the-wild Multimodal Disease Recognition and A Versatile Baseline

Existing plant disease classification models have achieved remarkable performance in recognizing in-laboratory diseased images. However, their performance often significantly degrades in classifying in-the-wild images. Furthermore, we observed that in-the-wild plant images may exhibit similar appearances across various diseases (i.e., small inter-class discrepancy) while the same diseases may look quite different (i.e., large intra-class variance). Motivated by this observation, we propose an in-the-wild multimodal plant disease recognition dataset that contains the largest number of disease classes but also text-based descriptions for each disease. Particularly, the newly provided text descriptions are introduced to provide rich information in textual modality and facilitate in-the-wild disease classification with small inter-class discrepancy and large intra-class variance issues. Therefore, our proposed dataset can be regarded as an ideal testbed for evaluating disease recognition methods in the real world. In addition, we further present a strong yet versatile baseline that models text descriptions and visual data through multiple prototypes for a given class. By fusing the contributions of multimodal prototypes in classification, our baseline can effectively address the small inter-class discrepancy and large intra-class variance issues. Remarkably, our baseline model can not only classify diseases but also recognize diseases in few-shot or training-free scenarios. Extensive benchmarking results demonstrate that our proposed in-the-wild multimodal dataset sets many new challenges to the plant disease recognition task and there is a large space to improve for future works.

FastEdit: Fast Text-Guided Single-Image Editing via Semantic-Aware Diffusion Fine-Tuning

Conventional Text-guided single-image editing approaches require a two-step process, including fine-tuning the target text embedding for over 1K iterations and the generative model for another 1.5K iterations. Although it ensures that the resulting image closely aligns with both the input image and the target text, this process often requires 7 minutes per image, posing a challenge for practical application due to its time-intensive nature. To address this bottleneck, we introduce FastEdit, a fast text-guided single-image editing method with semantic-aware diffusion fine-tuning, dramatically accelerating the editing process to only 17 seconds. FastEdit streamlines the generative model's fine-tuning phase, reducing it from 1.5K to a mere 50 iterations. For diffusion fine-tuning, we adopt certain time step values based on the semantic discrepancy between the input image and target text. Furthermore, FastEdit circumvents the initial fine-tuning step by utilizing an image-to-image model that conditions on the feature space, rather than the text embedding space. It can effectively align the target text prompt and input image within the same feature space and save substantial processing time. Additionally, we apply the parameter-efficient fine-tuning technique LoRA to U-net. With LoRA, FastEdit minimizes the model's trainable parameters to only 0.37\% of the original size. At the same time, we can achieve comparable editing outcomes with significantly reduced computational overhead. We conduct extensive experiments to validate the editing performance of our approach and show promising editing capabilities, including content addition, style transfer, background replacement, and posture manipulation, etc.

Movable-Antenna Position Optimization for Physical-Layer Security via Discrete Sampling

Fluid antennas (FAs) and mobile antennas (MAs) are innovative technologies in wireless communications that are able to proactively improve channel conditions by dynamically adjusting the transmit/receive antenna positions within a given spatial region. In this paper, we investigate an MA-enhanced multiple-input single-output (MISO) secure communication system, aiming to maximize the secrecy rate by jointly optimizing the positions of multiple MAs. Instead of continuously searching for the optimal MA positions as in prior works, we propose to discretize the transmit region into multiple sampling points, thereby converting the continuous antenna position optimization into a discrete sampling point selection problem. However, this point selection problem is combinatory and thus difficult to be optimally solved. To tackle this challenge, we ingeniously transform this combinatory problem into a recursive path selection problem in graph theory and propose a partial enumeration algorithm to obtain its optimal solution without the need for high-complexity exhaustive search. To further reduce the complexity, a linear-time sequential update algorithm is also proposed to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution. Numerical results show that our proposed algorithms yield much higher secrecy rates as compared to the conventional FPA and other baseline schemes.

Linear Alignment: A Closed-form Solution for Aligning Human Preferences without Tuning and Feedback

The success of AI assistants based on Language Models (LLMs) hinges on Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) to comprehend and align with user intentions. However, traditional alignment algorithms, such as PPO, are hampered by complex annotation and training requirements. This reliance limits the applicability of RLHF and hinders the development of professional assistants tailored to diverse human preferences. In this work, we introduce \textit{Linear Alignment}, a novel algorithm that aligns language models with human preferences in one single inference step, eliminating the reliance on data annotation and model training. Linear alignment incorporates a new parameterization for policy optimization under divergence constraints, which enables the extraction of optimal policy in a closed-form manner and facilitates the direct estimation of the aligned response. Extensive experiments on both general and personalized preference datasets demonstrate that linear alignment significantly enhances the performance and efficiency of LLM alignment across diverse scenarios. Our code and dataset is published on \url{https://github.com/Wizardcoast/Linear_Alignment.git}.

M$^3$CoT: A Novel Benchmark for Multi-Domain Multi-step Multi-modal Chain-of-Thought

Multi-modal Chain-of-Thought (MCoT) requires models to leverage knowledge from both textual and visual modalities for step-by-step reasoning, which gains increasing attention. Nevertheless, the current MCoT benchmark still faces some challenges: (1) absence of visual modal reasoning, (2) single-step visual modal reasoning, and (3) Domain missing, thereby hindering the development of MCoT. Motivated by this, we introduce a novel benchmark (M$^3$CoT) to address the above challenges, advancing the multi-domain, multi-step, and multi-modal CoT. Additionally, we conduct a thorough evaluation involving abundant MCoT approaches on Vision Large Language Models (VLLMs). In addition, we highlight that the current VLLMs still struggle to correctly reason in M$^3$CoT and there remains a large gap between existing VLLMs and human performance in M$^3$CoT, despite their superior results on previous MCoT benchmarks. To our knowledge, we take the first meaningful step toward the multi-domain, multi-step, and multi-modal scenario in MCoT. We hope that M$^3$CoT can serve as a valuable resource, providing a pioneering foundation in multi-domain, multi-step, multi-modal chain-of-thought research.

A Max-Min-Max Algorithm for Large-Scale Robust Optimization

Robust optimization (RO) is a powerful paradigm for decision making under uncertainty. Existing algorithms for solving RO, including the reformulation approach and the cutting-plane method, do not scale well, hindering the application of RO to large-scale decision problems. In this paper, we devise a first-order algorithm for solving RO based on a novel max-min-max perspective. Our algorithm operates directly on the model functions and sets through the subgradient and projection oracles, which enables the exploitation of problem structures and is especially suitable for large-scale RO. Theoretically, we prove that the oracle complexity of our algorithm for attaining an $\varepsilon$-approximate optimal solution is $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^{-3})$ or $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^{-2})$, depending on the smoothness of the model functions. The algorithm and its theoretical results are then extended to RO with projection-unfriendly uncertainty sets. We also show via extensive numerical experiments that the proposed algorithm outperforms the reformulation approach, the cutting-plane method and two other recent first-order algorithms.

However, replicating such advancements in open-source models has been challenging. This paper introduces InternLM2, an open-source LLM that outperforms its predecessors in comprehensive evaluations across 6 dimensions and 30 benchmarks, long-context modeling, and open-ended subjective evaluations through innovative pre-training and optimization techniques. The pre-training process of InternLM2 is meticulously detailed, highlighting the preparation of diverse data types including text, code, and long-context data. Movable-Antenna Position Optimization: A Graph-based Approach

Fluid antennas (FAs) and movable antennas (MAs) have emerged as promising technologies in wireless communications, which offer the flexibility to improve channel conditions by adjusting transmit/receive antenna positions within a spatial region. In this letter, we focus on an MA-enhanced multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system, aiming to optimize the positions of multiple transmit MAs to maximize the received signal power. Unlike the prior works on continuously searching for the optimal MA positions, we propose to sample the transmit region into discrete points, such that the continuous antenna position optimization problem is transformed to a discrete sampling point selection problem based on the point-wise channel information. However, such a point selection problem is combinatory and challenging to be optimally solved. To tackle this challenge, we ingeniously recast it as an equivalent fixed-hop shortest path problem in graph theory and propose a customized algorithm to solve it optimally in polynomial time. To further reduce the complexity, a linear-time sequential update algorithm is also proposed to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can yield considerable performance gains over the conventional fixed-position antennas with/without antenna selection.

Sensitivity of Simulations of Double Detonation Type Ia Supernova to Integration Methodology

We study the coupling of hydrodynamics and reactions in simulations of the double detonation model for Type Ia supernovae. When assessing the convergence of simulations, the focus is usually on spatial resolution; however, the method of coupling the physics together as well as the tolerances used in integrating a reaction network also play an important role. In this paper, we explore how the choices made in both coupling and integrating the reaction portion of a simulation (operator / Strang splitting vs.\ the simplified spectral deferred corrections method we introduced previously) influences the accuracy, efficiency, and the nucleosynthesis of simulations of double detonations. We find no need to limit reaction rates or reduce the simulation timestep to the reaction timescale. The entire simulation methodology used here is GPU-accelerated and made freely available as part of the Castro simulation code.
