Dynamical properties of quasiparticles in a tunable Kekulé graphene superlattice

We investigate the dynamical properties of quasiparticles in graphene superlattices with three typical Kekulé distortions (i.e., Kekulé-O, Kekulé-Y and Kekulé-M). On the one hand, we numerically show the visualized evolution process of Kekulé quasiparticles; while on the other hand, we analytically obtain the centroid trajectory of the quasiparticles, and both of them agree well with each other. The results reveal that the relativistic Zitterbewegung (ZB) phenomenon occurs in the Kekulé systems. Furthermore, through analyzing the frequency of ZB, we unveil the one-to-one relationship between ZB and Kekulé textures, i.e., the ZB frequenies of Kekulé-O, Kekulé-Y and Kekulé-M quasiparticles feature single, double and six frequencies, respectively. Finally, we propose a scheme to distinguish among different Kekulé textures from the dynamical perspective. The predictions in this paper are expected to be experimentally verified in the near future, so as to facilitate further research of Kekulé structures in solid materials or artificial systems.

On a Bogomolov type vanishing theorem

Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold and $(L,h)\rightarrow X$ be a pseudoeffective line bundle, such that the curvature $iΘ_{L,h}\geq 0$ in the sense of currents. The main result of the present paper is that $H^n(X,\mathcal{O}(Ω^p_X\otimes L)\otimes \mathcal{I}(h))=0$ for $p\geq n-nd(L,h)+1$. This is a generalization of Bogomolov's vanishing theorem.

Rehearsal-Free Domain Continual Face Anti-Spoofing: Generalize More and Forget Less

Face Anti-Spoofing (FAS) is recently studied under the continual learning setting, where the FAS models are expected to evolve after encountering the data from new domains. However, existing methods need extra replay buffers to store previous data for rehearsal, which becomes infeasible when previous data is unavailable because of privacy issues. In this paper, we propose the first rehearsal-free method for Domain Continual Learning (DCL) of FAS, which deals with catastrophic forgetting and unseen domain generalization problems simultaneously. For better generalization to unseen domains, we design the Dynamic Central Difference Convolutional Adapter (DCDCA) to adapt Vision Transformer (ViT) models during the continual learning sessions. To alleviate the forgetting of previous domains without using previous data, we propose the Proxy Prototype Contrastive Regularization (PPCR) to constrain the continual learning with previous domain knowledge from the proxy prototypes. Simulate practical DCL scenarios, we devise two new protocols which evaluate both generalization and anti-forgetting performance. Extensive experimental results show that our proposed method can improve the generalization performance in unseen domains and alleviate the catastrophic forgetting of the previous knowledge. The codes and protocols will be released soon.

GUESR: A Global Unsupervised Data-Enhancement with Bucket-Cluster Sampling for Sequential Recommendation

Sequential Recommendation is a widely studied paradigm for learning users' dynamic interests from historical interactions for predicting the next potential item. Although lots of research work has achieved remarkable progress, they are still plagued by the common issues: data sparsity of limited supervised signals and data noise of accidentally clicking. To this end, several works have attempted to address these issues, which ignored the complex association of items across several sequences. Along this line, with the aim of learning representative item embedding to alleviate this dilemma, we propose GUESR, from the view of graph contrastive learning. Specifically, we first construct the Global Item Relationship Graph (GIRG) from all interaction sequences and present the Bucket-Cluster Sampling (BCS) method to conduct the sub-graphs. Then, graph contrastive learning on this reduced graph is developed to enhance item representations with complex associations from the global view. We subsequently extend the CapsNet module with the elaborately introduced target-attention mechanism to derive users' dynamic preferences. Extensive experimental results have demonstrated our proposed GUESR could not only achieve significant improvements but also could be regarded as a general enhancement strategy to improve the performance in combination with other sequential recommendation methods.

Electric Vehicle Sales Forecasting Model Considering Green Premium: A Chinese Market-based Perspective

"Green Premiums" which means the difference in cost between emissions-emitting technology and zero-emissions or emissions-reducing technology is significant for those renewable energy technology to address the climate change challenge facing the world in this century. China's Electrical Vehicles (EVs) industry is the first to cross the green premium into the commercialization stage, prompting its market size to exceed that of the US and EU combined, making it the most inspiring case in global carbon reduction practices. This study, which is based on first-hand data from industry research and innovatively constructs a multi-factor green premium model for EVs based on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis, finds that EVs currently have a higher green premium than Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles (ICEVs) and is expected that short-range EVs will be the first to achieve parity in acquisition costs by 2025 and long-range EVs by 2030. Further, this paper constructs a generalized Bass diffusion model considering the green premium, selects the time series data of EVs diffusion in the Chinese market from 2010-2021, and uses a genetic algorithm to fit the parameters to predict the EVs market penetration in the next ten years under different scenarios. The model prediction results show that EVs are successful innovative diffusion products and the market penetration rate depends largely on their green premium. The Chinese EVs market may experience a slowdown or even a decline in growth in the short term, but will maintain high growth in the medium to long term, with annual sales expected to reach 10.77 million units by 2030 and a penetration rate of about 39%.

Autonomous Exploration and Mapping for Mobile Robots via Cumulative Curriculum Reinforcement Learning

Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has been widely applied in autonomous exploration and mapping tasks, but often struggles with the challenges of sampling efficiency, poor adaptability to unknown map sizes, and slow simulation speed. To speed up convergence, we combine curriculum learning (CL) with DRL, and first propose a Cumulative Curriculum Reinforcement Learning (CCRL) training framework to alleviate the issue of catastrophic forgetting faced by general CL. Besides, we present a novel state representation, which considers a local egocentric map and a global exploration map resized to the fixed dimension, so as to flexibly adapt to environments with various sizes and shapes. Additionally, for facilitating the fast training of DRL models, we develop a lightweight grid-based simulator, which can substantially accelerate simulation compared to popular robot simulation platforms such as Gazebo. Based on the customized simulator, comprehensive experiments have been conducted, and the results show that the CCRL framework not only mitigates the catastrophic forgetting problem, but also improves the sample efficiency and generalization of DRL models, compared to general CL as well as without a curriculum. FormerTime: Hierarchical Multi-Scale Representations for Multivariate Time Series Classification

Deep learning-based algorithms, e.g., convolutional networks, have significantly facilitated multivariate time series classification (MTSC) task. Nevertheless, they suffer from the limitation in modeling long-range dependence due to the nature of convolution operations. Recent advancements have shown the potential of transformers to capture long-range dependence. However, it would incur severe issues, such as fixed scale representations, temporal-invariant and quadratic time complexity, with transformers directly applicable to the MTSC task because of the distinct properties of time series data. To tackle these issues, we propose FormerTime, an hierarchical representation model for improving the classification capacity for the MTSC task. In the proposed FormerTime, we employ a hierarchical network architecture to perform multi-scale feature maps. Besides, a novel transformer encoder is further designed, in which an efficient temporal reduction attention layer and a well-informed contextual positional encoding generating strategy are developed. To sum up, FormerTime exhibits three aspects of merits: (1) learning hierarchical multi-scale representations from time series data, (2) inheriting the strength of both transformers and convolutional networks, and (3) tacking the efficiency challenges incurred by the self-attention mechanism. Extensive experiments performed on $10$ publicly available datasets from UEA archive verify the superiorities of the FormerTime compared to previous competitive baselines.

ShapeWordNet: An Interpretable Shapelet Neural Network for Physiological Signal Classification

Physiological signals are high-dimensional time series of great practical values in medical and healthcare applications. However, previous works on its classification fail to obtain promising results due to the intractable data characteristics and the severe label sparsity issues. In this paper, we try to address these challenges by proposing a more effective and interpretable scheme tailored for the physiological signal classification task. Specifically, we exploit the time series shapelets to extract prominent local patterns and perform interpretable sequence discretization to distill the whole-series information. By doing so, the long and continuous raw signals are compressed into short and discrete token sequences, where both local patterns and global contexts are well preserved. Moreover, to alleviate the label sparsity issue, a multi-scale transformation strategy is adaptively designed to augment data and a cross-scale contrastive learning mechanism is accordingly devised to guide the model training. We name our method as ShapeWordNet and conduct extensive experiments on three real-world datasets to investigate its effectiveness. Comparative results show that our proposed scheme remarkably outperforms four categories of cutting-edge approaches. Visualization analysis further witnesses the good interpretability of the sequence discretization idea based on shapelets.

Entanglement Dynamics of Noisy Random Circuits

The process by which open quantum systems thermalize with an environment is both of fundamental interest and relevant to noisy quantum devices. As a minimal model of this process, we consider a qudit chain evolving under local random unitaries and local depolarization channels. After mapping to a statistical mechanics model, the depolarization (noise) acts like a symmetry-breaking field, and we argue that it causes the system to thermalize within a timescale independent of system size. We show that various bipartite entanglement measures -- mutual information, operator entanglement, and entanglement negativity -- grow at a speed proportional to the size of the bipartition boundary. As a result, these entanglement measures obey an area law: Their maximal value during the dynamics is bounded by the boundary instead of the volume. In contrast, if the depolarization only acts at the system boundary, then the maximum value of the entanglement measures obeys a volume law. We complement our analysis with scalable simulations involving Clifford gates, for both one- and two-dimensional systems.

Ultrafast Entanglement Dynamics in Monitored Quantum Circuits

Projective measurement, a basic operation in quantum mechanics, can induce seemingly nonlocal effects. In this work, we analyze such effects in many-body systems by studying the non-equilibrium dynamics of weakly monitored quantum circuits, focusing on entanglement generation and information spreading. We find that, due to measurements, the entanglement dynamics in monitored circuits is indeed "faster" than that of unitary ones in several ways. Specifically, we find that a pair of well-separated regions can become entangled in a time scale $\ell^{2/3}$, sub-linear in their distance $\ell$. For the case of Clifford monitored circuits, this originates from super-ballistically growing stabilizer generators of the evolving state. In addition, we find initially local information can spread super-ballistically as $t^{3/2}$. Furthermore, by viewing the dynamics as a dynamical encoding process, we show that the super-ballistic growing length scale relates to an encoding time that is sublinear in system size. To quantify the information dynamics, we develop a formalism generalizing operator spreading to non-unitary dynamics, which is of independent interest.

Energy Management of Multi-mode Hybrid Electric Vehicles based on Hand-shaking Multi-agent Learning

The future transportation system will be a multi-agent network where connected AI agents can work together to address the grand challenges in our age, e.g., mitigation of real-world driving energy consumption. Distinguished from the existing research on vehicle energy management, which decoupled multiple inputs and multiple outputs (MIMO) control into single-output(MISO) control, this paper studied a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) framework to deal with multiple control outputs simultaneously. A new hand-shaking strategy is proposed for the DRL agents by introducing an independence ratio, and a parametric study is conducted to obtain the best setting for the MADRL framework. The study suggested that the MADRL with an independence ratio of 0.2 is the best, and more than 2.4% of energy can be saved over the conventional DRL framework.

One Person, One Model--Learning Compound Router for Sequential Recommendation

Deep learning has brought significant breakthroughs in sequential recommendation (SR) for capturing dynamic user interests. A series of recent research revealed that models with more parameters usually achieve optimal performance for SR tasks, inevitably resulting in great challenges for deploying them in real systems. Following the simple assumption that light networks might already suffice for certain users, in this work, we propose CANet, a conceptually simple yet very scalable framework for assigning adaptive network architecture in an input-dependent manner to reduce unnecessary computation. The core idea of CANet is to route the input user behaviors with a light-weighted router module. Specifically, we first construct the routing space with various submodels parameterized in terms of multiple model dimensions such as the number of layers, hidden size and embedding size. To avoid extra storage overhead of the routing space, we employ a weight-slicing schema to maintain all the submodels in exactly one network. Furthermore, we leverage several solutions to solve the discrete optimization issues caused by the router module. Thanks to them, CANet could adaptively adjust its network architecture for each input in an end-to-end manner, in which the user preference can be effectively captured. To evaluate our work, we conduct extensive experiments on benchmark datasets. Experimental results show that CANet reduces computation by 55 ~ 65% while preserving the accuracy of the original model. Our codes are available at https://github.com/icantnamemyself/CANet.

Nested Named Entity Recognition from Medical Texts: An Adaptive Shared Network Architecture with Attentive CRF

Recognizing useful named entities plays a vital role in medical information processing, which helps drive the development of medical area research. Deep learning methods have achieved good results in medical named entity recognition (NER). However, we find that existing methods face great challenges when dealing with the nested named entities. In this work, we propose a novel method, referred to as ASAC, to solve the dilemma caused by the nested phenomenon, in which the core idea is to model the dependency between different categories of entity recognition. The proposed method contains two key modules: the adaptive shared (AS) part and the attentive conditional random field (ACRF) module. The former part automatically assigns adaptive weights across each task to achieve optimal recognition accuracy in the multi-layer network. The latter module employs the attention operation to model the dependency between different entities. In this way, our model could learn better entity representations by capturing the implicit distinctions and relationships between different categories of entities. Extensive experiments on public datasets verify the effectiveness of our method. Besides, we also perform ablation analyses to deeply understand our methods.

Debiasing Graph Transfer Learning via Item Semantic Clustering for Cross-Domain Recommendations

Deep learning-based recommender systems may lead to over-fitting when lacking training interaction data. This over-fitting significantly degrades recommendation performances. To address this data sparsity problem, cross-domain recommender systems (CDRSs) exploit the data from an auxiliary source domain to facilitate the recommendation on the sparse target domain. Most existing CDRSs rely on overlapping users or items to connect domains and transfer knowledge. However, matching users is an arduous task and may involve privacy issues when data comes from different companies, resulting in a limited application for the above CDRSs. Some studies develop CDRSs that require no overlapping users and items by transferring learned user interaction patterns. However, they ignore the bias in user interaction patterns between domains and hence suffer from an inferior performance compared with single-domain recommender systems. In this paper, based on the above findings, we propose a novel CDRS, namely semantic clustering enhanced debiasing graph neural recommender system (SCDGN), that requires no overlapping users and items and can handle the domain bias. More precisely, SCDGN semantically clusters items from both domains and constructs a cross-domain bipartite graph generated from item clusters and users. Then, the knowledge is transferred via this cross-domain user-cluster graph from the source to the target. Furthermore, we design a debiasing graph convolutional layer for SCDGN to extract unbiased structural knowledge from the cross-domain user-cluster graph. Our Experimental results on three public datasets and a pair of proprietary datasets verify the effectiveness of SCDGN over state-of-the-art models in terms of cross-domain recommendations.

Model-based Evaluation of Driver Control Workloads in Haptic-based Driver Assistance Systems

This study presents a novel approach for modeling and simulating human-vehicle interactions in order to examine the effects of automated driving systems (ADS) on driving performance and driver control workload. Existing driver-ADS interaction studies have relied on simulated or real-world human driver experiments that are limited in providing objective evaluation of the dynamic interactions and control workloads on the driver. Our approach leverages an integrated human model-based active driving system (HuMADS) to simulate the dynamic interaction between the driver model and the haptic-based ADS during a vehicle overtaking task. Two driver arm-steering models were developed for both tense and relaxed human driver conditions and validated against experimental data. We conducted a simulation study to evaluate the effects of three different haptic shared control conditions (based on the presence and type of control conflict) on overtaking task performance and driver workloads. We found that No Conflict shared control scenarios result in improved driving performance and reduced control workloads, while Conflict scenarios result in unsafe maneuvers and increased workloads. These findings, which are consistent with experimental studies, demonstrate the potential for our approach to improving future ADS design for safer driver assistance systems.

Alpha-particle generation from H-11B fusion initiated by laser-accelerated boron ions

Here we report the generation of MeV alpha-particles from H-11B fusion initiated by laser-accelerated boron ions. Boron ions with maximum energy of 6MeV and fluence of 10^9/MeV/sr@5MeV were generated from 60-nm-thick self-supporting boron nanofoils irradiated by 1J femtosecond pulses at an intensity of 10^19W/cm^2. By bombarding secondary hydrogenous targets with the boron ions, 3*10^5/sr alpha-particles from H-11B fusion were registered, which is consistent with the theoretical yield calculated from the measured boron energy spectra. Our results demonstrate an alternative way toward ultrashort MeV alpha-particle sources employing compact femtosecond lasers. The ion acceleration and product measurement scheme are referential for the studies on the ion stopping power and cross-section of the H-11B reaction in solid or plasma.

MoCapDeform: Monocular 3D Human Motion Capture in Deformable Scenes

3D human motion capture from monocular RGB images respecting interactions of a subject with complex and possibly deformable environments is a very challenging, ill-posed and under-explored problem. Existing methods address it only weakly and do not model possible surface deformations often occurring when humans interact with scene surfaces. In contrast, this paper proposes MoCapDeform, i.e., a new framework for monocular 3D human motion capture that is the first to explicitly model non-rigid deformations of a 3D scene for improved 3D human pose estimation and deformable environment reconstruction. MoCapDeform accepts a monocular RGB video and a 3D scene mesh aligned in the camera space. It first localises a subject in the input monocular video along with dense contact labels using a new raycasting based strategy. Next, our human-environment interaction constraints are leveraged to jointly optimise global 3D human poses and non-rigid surface deformations. MoCapDeform achieves superior accuracy than competing methods on several datasets, including our newly recorded one with deforming background scenes.
