Landau-Zener-Stückelberg Interferometry in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Non-Hermitian models

We systematically investigate the non-Hermitian generalisations of the Landau-Zener (LZ) transition and the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) interferometry. The LZ transition probabilities, or band populations, are calculated for a generic non-Hermitian model and their asymptotic behaviour analysed. We then focus on non-Hermitian systems with a real adiabatic parameter and study the LZS interferometry formed out of two identical avoided level crossings. Four distinctive cases of interferometry are identified and the analytic formulae for the transition probabilities are calculated for each case. The differences and similarities between the non-Hermitian case and its Hermitian counterpart are emphasised. In particular, the geometrical phase originated from the sign change of the mass term at the two level crossings is still present in the non-Hermitian system, indicating its robustness against the non-Hermiticity. We further apply our non-Hermitian LZS theory to describing the Bloch oscillation in one-dimensional parity-time $(\mathcal{PT})$ reversal symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and propose an experimental scheme to simulate such dynamics using photonic waveguide arrays. The Landau-Zener transition, as well as the LZS interferometry, can be visualised through the beam intensity profile and the transition probabilitiess measured by the centre of mass of the profile.

Local formula for the $Z_2$ invariant of topological insulators

We proposed a formula for the $Z_2$ invariant for topological insulators, which remains valid without translational invariance. Our formula is a local expression, in the sense that the contributions mainly come from quantities near a point. Using almost commute matrices, we proposed a method to approximate this invariant with local information. The validity of the formula and the approximation method is proved.

Novel Trotter formulas for digital quantum simulation

Quantum simulation promises to address many challenges in fields ranging from quantum chemistry to material science, and high-energy physics, and could be implemented in noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices. A challenge in building good digital quantum simulators is the fidelity of the engineered dynamics given a finite set of elementary operations. Here we present a framework for optimizing the order of operations based on a geometric picture, thus abstracting from the operation details and achieving computational efficiency. Based on this geometric framework, we provide two alternative second-order Trotter expansions, one with optimal fidelity at a short time scale, and the second robust at a long time scale. Thanks to the improved fidelity at different time scale, the two expansions we introduce can form the basis for experimental-constrained digital quantum simulation.

Finite-temperature topological entanglement entropy for CSS codes

We consider topological entanglement entropy (TEE) at finite temperature for CSS codes, which include some ordinary topological-ordered systems such as the toric code and some fracton models such as the Haah's code and the X-cube model. We find, under the assumption that there is no extended critical phase, the finite-temperature TEE is a piecewise constant function of the temperature, with possible discontinuities only at phase transitions. We then consider phase transitions of CSS codes. We claim that there must exist a phase transition at zero temperature for any CSS codes in 2D and 3D with topological order. This statement can be rigorous proved for some familiar examples, while for general models it can be argued based on the low-temperature expansion. This indicates the break down of topological orders at finite temperature. We also discuss possible connections with self-correcting quantum memory.

Generalized Score Distribution

A class of discrete probability distributions contains distributions with limited support, i.e. possible argument values are limited to a set of numbers (typically consecutive). Examples of such data are results from subjective experiments utilizing the Absolute Category Rating (ACR) technique, where possible answers (argument values) are $\{1, 2, \cdots, 5\}$ or typical Likert scale $\{-3, -2, \cdots, 3\}$. An interesting subclass of those distributions are distributions limited to two parameters: describing the mean value and the spread of the answers, and having no more than one change in the probability monotonicity. In this paper we propose a general distribution passing those limitations called Generalized Score Distribution (GSD). The proposed GSD covers all spreads of the answers, from very small, given by the Bernoulli distribution, to the maximum given by a Beta Binomial distribution. We also show that GSD correctly describes subjective experiments scores from video quality evaluations with probability of 99.7\%. A Google Collaboratory website with implementation of the GSD estimation, simulation, and visualization is provided.

Dynamic State Estimation of Generators Under Cyber Attacks

Accurate and reliable estimation of generator's dynamic state vectors in real time are critical to the monitoring and control of power systems. A robust Cubature Kalman Filter (RCKF) based approach is proposed for dynamic state estimation (DSE) of generators under cyber attacks in this paper. First, two types of cyber attacks, namely false data injection and denial of service attacks, are modelled and thereby introduced into DSE of a generator by mixing the attack vectors with the measurement data; Second, under cyber attacks with different degrees of sophistication, the RCKF algorithm and the Cubature Kalman Filter (CKF) algorithm are adopted to the DSE, and then the two algorithms are compared and discussed. The novelty of this study lies primarily in our attempt to introduce cyber attacks into DSE of generators. The simulation results on the IEEE 9-bus system and the New England 16-machine 68-bus system verify the effectiveness and superiority of the RCKF.

Dynamic State Estimation of Synchronous Machines Using Robust Cubature Kalman Filter Against Complex Measurement Noise Statistics

Cubature Kalman Filter (CKF) has good performance when handling nonlinear dynamic state estimations. However, it cannot work well in non-Gaussian noise and bad data environment due to the lack of auto-adaptive ability to measure noise statistics on line. In order to address the problem of behavioral decline and divergence when measure noise statistics deviate prior noise statistics, a new robust CKF (RCKF) algorithm is developed by combining the Huber's M-estimation theory with the classical CKF, and thereby it is proposed to coping with the dynamic state estimation of synchronous generators in this study. The simulation results on the IEEE-9 bus system and New England 16-machine-68-bus system demonstrate that the estimation accuracy and convergence of the proposed RCKF are superior to those of the classical CKF under complex measurement noise environments including different measurement noises and bad data, and that the RCKF is capable of effectively eliminating the impact of bad data on the estimation effects.

Modulation of crystal and electronic structures in topological insulators by rare-earth doping

We study magnetotransport in a rare earth doped topological insulator, Sm0.1Sb1.9Te3 single crystals, under magnetic fields up to 14 T. It is found that that the crystals exhibit Shubnikov de Haas oscillations in their magneto-transport behaviour at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. The SdH oscillations result from the mixed contributions of bulk and surface states. We also investigate the SdH oscillations in different orientations of the magnetic field, which reveals a three dimensional Fermi surface topology. By fitting the oscillatory resistance with the Lifshitz Kosevich theory, we draw a Landau-level fan diagram that displays the expected nontrivial phase. In addition, the density functional theory calculations shows that Sm doping changes the crystal structure and electronic structure compared with pure Sb2Te3. This work demonstrates that rare earth doping is an effective way to manipulate the Fermi surface of topological insulators. Our results hold potential for the realization of exotic topological effects in magnetic topological insulators.

Multilayer silicene: structure, electronics, and mechanical property

Herein, we performed first principle calculation and classical molecular dynamics simulation to study structural optimization, band structure, and mechanical properties of differently stacked multilayer silicene. Several local energy minima have been identified as metastable conformation with different stacking mode and layer number. Bandstructure of low buckled AA bilayer silicene optimized with SCAN+rvv10 presents semiconducting behavior with a bandgap of 0.4419ev. Young's modulus of multilayer silicene shows low dependency on layer number or stacking mode. Whereas, fracture stress and strain is sensitive to the number of layers, specific stacking mode, and chirality. Furthermore, bending modulus of multilayer silicene (e.g., 0.44ev for monolayer silicene) is even lower than that of graphene, which may attribute to the flexibility of bond angle.

Explainable Fashion Recommendation: A Semantic Attribute Region Guided Approach

In fashion recommender systems, each product usually consists of multiple semantic attributes (e.g., sleeves, collar, etc). When making cloth decisions, people usually show preferences for different semantic attributes (e.g., the clothes with v-neck collar). Nevertheless, most previous fashion recommendation models comprehend the clothing images with a global content representation and lack detailed understanding of users' semantic preferences, which usually leads to inferior recommendation performance. To bridge this gap, we propose a novel Semantic Attribute Explainable Recommender System (SAERS). Specifically, we first introduce a fine-grained interpretable semantic space. We then develop a Semantic Extraction Network (SEN) and Fine-grained Preferences Attention (FPA) module to project users and items into this space, respectively. With SAERS, we are capable of not only providing cloth recommendations for users, but also explaining the reason why we recommend the cloth through intuitive visual attribute semantic highlights in a personalized manner. Extensive experiments conducted on real-world datasets clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach compared with the state-of-the-art methods.

Quantum Oscillations of Robust Topological Surface States up to 50 K in Thick Bulk-insulating Topological Insulator

As personal electronic devices increasingly rely on cloud computing for energy-intensive calculations, the power consumption associated with the information revolution is rapidly becoming an important environmental issue. Several approaches have been proposed to construct electronic devices with low energy consumption. Among these, the low-dissipation surface states of topological insulators (TIs) are widely employed. To develop TI-based devices, a key factor is the maximum temperature at which the Dirac surface states dominate the transport behavior. Here, we employ Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations (SdH) as a means to study the surface state survival temperature in a high quality vanadium doped Bi1.08Sn0.02Sb0.9Te2S single crystal system. The temperature and angle dependence of the SdH show that: 1) crystals with different vanadium (V) doping levels are insulating in the 3-300 K region, 2) the SdH oscillations show two-dimensional behavior, indicating that the oscillations arise from the pure surface states; and 3) at 50 K, the V0.04 single crystals (Vx:Bi1.08-xSn0.02Sb0.9Te2S, where x = 0.04) still show clear sign of SdH oscillations, which demonstrate that the surface dominant transport behavior can survive above 50 K. The robust surface states in our V doped single crystal systems provide an ideal platform to study the Dirac fermions and their interaction with other materials above 50 K.

Giant and Linear Magnetoresistance in Liquid Metals at Ambient Temperature

Disorder-induced magnetoresistance has been reported in a range of solid metals and semiconductors, however, the underlying physical mechanism is still under debate because it is difficult to experimentally control. Liquid metals, due to lack of long-range order, offers an ideal model system where many forms of disorder can be deactivated by freezing the liquid. Here we report non-saturating magnetoresistance discovered in the liquid state of three metals: Ga, Ga-In-Sn and Bi-Pb-Sn-In alloys. The giant magnetoresistance appears above the respective melting points and has a maximum of 2500% at 14 Tesla. The reduced diamagnetism in the liquid state implies that a short-mean free path of the electron, induced by the spatial distribution of the liquid structure, is a key factor. A potential technological merit of this liquidtronic magnetoresistance is that it naturally operates at higher temperatures.

A decentralized proximal-gradient method with network independent step-sizes and separated convergence rates

This paper proposes a novel proximal-gradient algorithm for a decentralized optimization problem with a composite objective containing smooth and non-smooth terms. Specifically, the smooth and nonsmooth terms are dealt with by gradient and proximal updates, respectively. The proposed algorithm is closely related to a previous algorithm, PG-EXTRA \cite{shi2015proximal}, but has a few advantages. First of all, agents use uncoordinated step-sizes, and the stable upper bounds on step-sizes are independent of network topologies. The step-sizes depend on local objective functions, and they can be as large as those of the gradient descent. Secondly, for the special case without non-smooth terms, linear convergence can be achieved under the strong convexity assumption. The dependence of the convergence rate on the objective functions and the network are separated, and the convergence rate of the new algorithm is as good as one of the two convergence rates that match the typical rates for the general gradient descent and the consensus averaging. We provide numerical experiments to demonstrate the efficacy of the introduced algorithm and validate our theoretical discoveries.

Entanglement renormalization for chiral topological phases

We considered the question of applying the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) to describe chiral topological phases. We defined a functional for each layer in the MERA, which captures the correlation length. With some algebraic geometry tools, we rigorously proved its monotonicity with respect to adjacent layers, and the existence of a lower bound for chiral states, which shows a trade-off between the bond dimension and the correlation length. Using this theorem, we showed the number of orbitals per cell (which roughly corresponds to the bond dimension) should grow with the height. Conversely, if we restrict the bond dimensions to be constant, then there is an upper bound of the height. Specifically, we established a no-go theorem stating that we will not approach a renormalization fixed point in this case.

Lijiang 2.4-meter Telescope and its Instruments

Lijiang 2.4-meter Telescope(LJT), the largest common-purpose optical telescope in China, has been applied to the world-wide astronomers since 2008. It is located at Gaomeigu site, Lijiang Observatory(LJO), the southwest of China. The site has very good observational conditions. Since 10-year operation, several instruments have been equipped on the LJT. Astronomers can perform both photometric and spectral observations. The main scientific goals of LJT include photometric and spectral evolution of supernova, reverberation mapping of active galactic nucleus, physical properties of binary star and near-earth object(comet and asteroid), identification of exoplanet, and all kinds of transients. Until now, the masses of 41 high accretion rate black holes have been measured, and more than 168 supernova have been identified by the LJT. More than 190 papers related to the LJT have been published. In this paper, the general observation condition of the Gaomeigu site is introduced at first. Then, the LJT structure is described in detail, including the optical, mechanical, motion and control system. The specification of all the instruments, and some detailed parameters of the YFOSC is also presented. Finally, some important scientific results and future expectations are summarized.

The global stability of M33: still a puzzle

The inner disc of the local group galaxy M33 appears to be in settled rotational balance, and near IR images reveal a mild, large-scale, two-arm spiral pattern with no strong bar. We have constructed N-body models that match all the extensive observational data on the kinematics and surface density of stars and gas in the inner part of M33. We find that currently favoured models are unstable to the formation of a strong bar of semi-major axis 2 < a_B < 3 kpc within 1 Gyr, which changes the dynamical properties of the models to become inconsistent with the current, apparently well-settled, state. The formation of a bar is unaffected by how the gas component is modelled, by increasing the mass of the nuclear star cluster, or by making the dark matter halo counter-rotate, but it can be prevented by either reducing the mass-to-light ratio of the stars to Upsilon_V ~ 0.6 or Upsilon_K ~ 0.23 in solar units or by increasing the random motions of the stars. Also a shorter and weaker bar results when the halo is rigid and unresponsive. However, all three near-stable models support multi-arm spirals, and not the observed large-scale bi-symmetric spiral. A two-arm spiral pattern could perhaps be tidally induced, but such a model would require an implausibly low mass disc to avoid a bar and there is no visible culprit. Thus the survival of the current state of this exceptionally well-studied galaxy is not yet understood. We also suspect that many other unbarred galaxies present a similar puzzle.

Notation for Subject Answer Analysis

It is believed that consistent notation helps the research community in many ways. First and foremost, it provides a consistent interface of communication. Subjective experiments described according to uniform rules are easier to understand and analyze. Additionally, a comparison of various results is less complicated. In this publication we describe notation proposed by VQEG (Video Quality Expert Group) working group SAM (Statistical Analysis and Methods).

Note: Nanomechanical characterization of soft materials using a micro-machined nanoforce transducer with an FIB-made pyramidal tip

The quantitative nanomechanical characterization of soft materials using the nanoindentation technique requires further improvements in the performances of instruments, including their force resolution in particular. A micro-machined silicon nanoforce transducer based upon electrostatic comb drives featuring the force and depth resolutions down to 1 nN and 0.2 nm, respectively, is described. At the end of the MEMS transducers main shaft, a pyramidal tip is fabricated using a focused ion beam facility. A proof-of-principle setup with this MEMS nanoindenter has been established to measure the mechanical properties of soft polydimethylsiloxane. First measurement results demonstrate that the prototype measurement system is able to quantitatively characterize soft materials with elastic moduli down to a few MPa.
