Are IRIS bombs connected to Ellerman bombs?

Recent observations by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) have revealed pockets of hot gas ($\sim$2--8$\times$10$^{4}$ K) potentially resulting from magnetic reconnection in the partially ionized lower solar atmosphere (IRIS bombs; IBs). Using joint observations between IRIS and the Chinese New Vacuum Solar Telescope, we have identified ten IBs. We find that three are unambiguously and three others are possibly connected to Ellerman bombs (EBs), which show intense brightening of the extended H$_α$ wings without leaving an obvious signature in the H$_α$ core. These bombs generally reveal the following distinct properties: (1) The O~{\sc{iv}}~1401.156Å and 1399.774Å lines are absent or very weak; (2) The Mn~{\sc{i}}~2795.640Å line manifests as an absorption feature superimposed on the greatly enhanced Mg~{\sc{ii}}~k line wing; (3) The Mg~{\sc{ii}}~k and h lines show intense brightening in the wings and no dramatic enhancement in the cores; (4) Chromospheric absorption lines such as Ni~{\sc{ii}}~1393.330Å and 1335.203Å are very strong; (5) The 1700Å images obtained with the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory reveal intense and compact brightenings. These properties support the formation of these bombs in the photosphere, demonstrating that EBs can be heated much more efficiently than previously thought. We also demonstrate that the Mg~{\sc{ii}}~k and h lines can be used to investigate EBs similarly to H$_α$, which opens a promising new window for EB studies. The remaining four IBs obviously have no connection to EBs and they do not have the properties mentioned above, suggesting a higher formation layer possibly in the chromosphere.

On a Modified DeGroot-Friedkin Model of Opinion Dynamics

This paper studies the opinion dynamics that result when individuals consecutively discuss a sequence of issues. Specifically, we study how individuals' self-confidence levels evolve via a reflected appraisal mechanism. Motivated by the DeGroot-Friedkin model, we propose a Modified DeGroot-Friedkin model which allows individuals to update their self-confidence levels by only interacting with their neighbors and in particular, the modified model allows the update of self-confidence levels to take place in finite time without waiting for the opinion process to reach a consensus on any particular issue. We study properties of this Modified DeGroot-Friedkin model and compare the associated equilibria and stability with those of the original DeGroot-Friedkin model. Specifically, for the case when the interaction matrix is doubly stochastic, we show that for the modified model, the vector of individuals' self-confidence levels asymptotically converges to a unique nontrivial equilibrium which for each individual is equal to 1/n, where n is the number of individuals. This implies that eventually, individuals reach a democratic state.

Fine Magnetic Structure and Origin of Counter-Streaming Mass Flows in a Quiescent Solar Prominence

We present high-resolution observations of a quiescent solar prominence which was consisted of a vertical and a horizontal foot encircled by an overlying spine, and counter-streaming mass flows were ubiquitous in the prominence. While the horizontal foot and the spine were connecting to the solar surface, the vertical foot was suspended above the solar surface and supported by a semicircular bubble structure. The bubble first collapsed and then reformed at a similar height, finally, it started to oscillate for a long time. We find that the collapsing and oscillation of the bubble boundary were tightly associated with a flare-like feature located at the bottom of the bubble. Based on the observational results, we propose that the prominence should be composed of an overlying horizontal spine encircling a low-lying horizontal and a vertical foot, in which the horizontal foot was consisted of shorter field lines running partially along the spine and with the both ends connecting to the solar surface, while the vertical foot was consisted of piling-up dips due to the sagging of the spine fields and supported by a bipolar magnetic system formed by parasitic polarities (i.e., the bubble). The upflows in the vertical foot were possibly caused by the magnetic reconnection at the separator between the bubble and the overlying dips, which intruded into the persistent downflow field and formed the picture of counter-streaming mass flows. In addition, the counter-streaming flows in the horizontal foot were possibly caused by the imbalanced pressure at the both ends.

Distributed Evaluation and Convergence of Self-Appraisals in Social Networks

We consider in this paper a networked system of opinion dynamics in continuous time, where the agents are able to evaluate their self-appraisals in a distributed way. In the model we formulate, the underlying network topology is described by a rooted digraph. For each ordered pair of agents $(i,j)$, we assign a function of self-appraisal to agent $i$, which measures the level of importance of agent $i$ to agent $j$. Thus, by communicating only with her neighbors, each agent is able to calculate the difference between her level of importance to others and others' level of importance to her. The dynamical system of self-appraisals is then designed to drive these differences to zero. We show that for almost all initial conditions, the trajectory generated by this dynamical system asymptotically converges to an equilibrium point which is exponentially stable.

New Vacuum Solar Telescope and Observations with High Resolution

The New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST) is a 1 meter vacuum solar telescope that aims to observe the fine structures on the Sun. The main tasks of NVST are high resolution imaging and spectral observations, including the measurements of solar magnetic field. NVST is the primary ground-based facility of Chinese solar community in this solar cycle. It is located by the Fuxian Lake of southwest China, where the seeing is good enough to perform high resolution observations. In this paper, we first introduce the general conditions of Fuxian Solar Observatory and the primary science cases of NVST. Then, the basic structures of this telescope and instruments are described in detail. Finally, some typical high resolution data of solar photosphere and chromosphere are also shown.

Multi-Shift de Bruijn Sequence

A (non-circular) de Bruijn sequence w of order n is a word such that every word of length n appears exactly once in w as a factor. In this paper, we generalize the concept to a multi-shift setting: a multi-shift de Bruijn sequence tau(m,n) of shift m and order n is a word such that every word of length n appears exactly once in w as a factor that starts at index im+1 for some integer i>=0. We show the number of the multi-shift de Bruijn sequence tau(m,n) is (a^n)!a^{(m-n)(a^n-1)} for 1<=n<=m and is (a^m!)^{a^{n-m}} for 1<=m<=n, where a=|Sigma|. We provide two algorithms for generating a tau(m,n). The multi-shift de Bruijn sequence is important in solving the Frobenius problem in a free monoid.

Triangular Self-Assembly

We discuss the self-assembly system of triangular tiles instead of square tiles, in particular right triangular tiles and equilateral triangular tiles. We show that the triangular tile assembly system, either deterministic or non-deterministic, has the same power to the square tile assembly system in computation, which is Turing universal. By providing counter-examples, we show that the triangular tile assembly system and the square tile assembly system are not comparable in general. More precisely, there exists square tile assembly system S such that no triangular tile assembly system is a division of S and produces the same shape; there exists triangular tile assembly system T such that no square tile assembly system produces the same compatible shape with border glues. We also discuss the assembly of triangles by triangular tiles and obtain results similar to the assembly of squares, that is to assemble a triangular of size O(N^2), the minimal number of tiles required is in O(log N/log log N).

A Minimal Periods Algorithm with Applications

Kosaraju in ``Computation of squares in a string'' briefly described a linear-time algorithm for computing the minimal squares starting at each position in a word. Using the same construction of suffix trees, we generalize his result and describe in detail how to compute in O(k|w|)-time the minimal k-th power, with period of length larger than s, starting at each position in a word w for arbitrary exponent $k\geq2$ and integer $s\geq0$. We provide the complete proof of correctness of the algorithm, which is somehow not completely clear in Kosaraju's original paper. The algorithm can be used as a sub-routine to detect certain types of pseudo-patterns in words, which is our original intention to study the generalization.

Pseudo-Power Avoidance

Repetition avoidance has been studied since Thue's work. In this paper, we considered another type of repetition, which is called pseudo-power. This concept is inspired by Watson-Crick complementarity in DNA sequence and is defined over an antimorphic involution $ϕ$. We first classify the alphabet $Σ$ and the antimorphic involution $ϕ$, under which there exists sufficiently long pseudo-$k$th-power-free words. Then we present algorithms to test whether a finite word $w$ is pseudo-$k$th-power-free.

Decision Problems For Convex Languages

In this paper we examine decision problems associated with various classes of convex languages, studied by Ang and Brzozowski (under the name "continuous languages"). We show that we can decide whether a given language L is prefix-, suffix-, factor-, or subword-convex in polynomial time if L is represented by a DFA, but that the problem is PSPACE-hard if L is represented by an NFA. In the case that a regular language is not convex, we prove tight upper bounds on the length of the shortest words demonstrating this fact, in terms of the number of states of an accepting DFA. Similar results are proved for some subclasses of convex languages: the prefix-, suffix-, factor-, and subword-closed languages, and the prefix-, suffix-, factor-, and subword-free languages.

The Frobenius Problem in a Free Monoid

The classical Frobenius problem is to compute the largest number g not representable as a non-negative integer linear combination of non-negative integers x_1, x_2, ..., x_k, where gcd(x_1, x_2, ..., x_k) = 1. In this paper we consider generalizations of the Frobenius problem to the noncommutative setting of a free monoid. Unlike the commutative case, where the bound on g is quadratic, we are able to show exponential or subexponential behavior for an analogue of g, depending on the particular measure chosen.
