Next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to $S$- and $P$-wave heavy quarkonium decay to $l^{+}l^{-} \gamma$

In this work, we comprehensively study the total and differential decay widths of the radiative Dalitz decays $H \to l^+l^-\gamma$ up to QCD next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy within the framework of NRQCD factorization. Our calculation includes the decays of $S$-wave states ($\eta_c, \eta_b$) and the $P$-wave triplets ($\chi_{cJ}, \chi_{bJ}$ for $J=0,1,2$) to both electron ($l=e$) and muon ($l=\mu$) final states. To match realistic experimental detection thresholds, systematic kinematic cuts are implemented on the final-state photon energy. Our analysis of the lepton-pair invariant mass distribution shows distinct singular behaviors across the multiplets originating from the lepton-pair threshold region, which is regularized by the lepton mass, and the soft-photon region, respectively. For the $S$-wave states, there is only one peak near the lepton-pair threshold region, while for the $J=0$ and $J=2$ $P$-wave states, the peaks show up in both regions. However, for the $J=1$ $P$-wave states, the peak only appears in the soft-photon region. Such features provide a rich venue to probe the $\gamma^{\ast}\to l^{+}l^{-}$ form factor in heavy quarkonium decay. Integrating over the bounded phase spaces reveals a distinct hierarchy among the $\chi_{QJ}$ states in the sensitivity of our theoretical predictions to the soft-photon energy cuts, ordered as $\chi_{Q1} >\chi_{Q2}>\chi_{Q0}$. In the $\chi_{cJ}\to l^{+}l^{-}\gamma$ cases, as the energy cut increases from 100 $\mathrm{MeV}$, to 500 $\mathrm{MeV}$ the theoretical predictions at QCD NLO are reduced by $6\%(\chi_{c0})$,$66\%(\chi_{c1})$, and $21\%(\chi_{c2})$ for $l=e$, and by $17\%(\chi_{c0})$,$66\%(\chi_{c1})$, and $39\%(\chi_{c2})$ for $l=\mu$. Comparing our predictions with the upcoming high-precision experimental tests at BESIII will definitely deepen our understanding of the predictive power of perturbative calculations.

Probing Gluon Linear Polarization with Dihadron Fragmentation in $\chi_b$ Decays

The dihadron fragmentation function (DiFF) of a linearly polarized gluon has not yet been accessed experimentally, leaving an important aspect of spin-dependent gluon hadronization unexplored. We show that, at leading order, the color-singlet decay channel of the $P$-wave bottomonium state $\chi_{b0}$ produces two energetic gluons with correlated linear polarizations. Within collinear factorization, their fragmentation into separate dihadron pairs generates an Artru--Collins-type angular correlation that provides the first direct probe of the linearly polarized gluon DiFF, while the corresponding semi-inclusive decay rate constrains the unpolarized gluon DiFF. A spectator-model benchmark indicates percent-level asymmetries, potentially within reach of existing Belle data. A dedicated Belle~II data set would substantially improve the statistical precision, enabling more stringent constraints on the kinematic dependence of the linearly polarized gluon DiFF.

Probing Heavy-Quark Spin Symmetry in Double $J/\psi$ Hadroproduction

We perform the first complete $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^5)$ analysis of the prompt hadroproduction of $J/\psi$ pairs with large transverse momenta $p_T^{\psi\psi}$ in the nonrelativistic-QCD factorization framework, including all possible Fock state combinations $c\bar{c}(m)+c\bar{c}(n)$, with $m,n={}^3S_1^{[1,8]},{}^1S_0^{[8]},{}^3P_J^{[1,8]}$. We observe that CMS and ATLAS data constrain a specific linear combination of the long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) $\langle\mathcal{O}^{J/\psi}({}^1S_0^{[8]})\rangle$ and $\langle\mathcal{O}^{J/\psi}({}^3P_0^{[8]})\rangle$. In conjunction with two other combinations fixed by single prompt $J/\psi$ hadroproduction, we gain a new LDME set, which turns out to be largely compatible with the world data of prompt $J/\psi$ yield and polarization and to probe heavy-quark spin symmetry, by which agreement is established with LHCb data of prompt $\eta_c$ yield. Our $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^5)$ predictions also nicely agree with CMS and ATLAS data in the lowest bins of $J/\psi$ pair invariant mass $m^{\psi\psi}$, beyond leading-order kinematics.

Probing the Color-Octet Mechanism via Dihadron Fragmentation in $χ_b$ Decays

The color-octet (CO) mechanism is a cornerstone of non-relativistic QCD, yet its long-distance matrix elements remain limited, preventing stringent tests of the theory. We demonstrate that the Artru-Collins asymmetry in hadronic decays of the $P$-wave bottomonium state $χ_{b2}$ provides a direct probe of CO dynamics. The asymmetry arises exclusively from the CO decay channel, whereas the color-singlet (CS) contribution affects only the unpolarized rate, so that a nonzero signal constitutes unambiguous evidence of the CO mechanism. This observable provides a novel way to extract the ratio $ρ_8$ between CO and CS matrix elements. Focusing on $e^+e^-\toΥ(2S)\toγ\,χ_{b2}$ at Belle, we show that the asymmetric beam configuration preserves the asymmetry in the laboratory frame and avoids the strong suppression present in the center-of-mass frame. With the Belle II dataset, $ρ_8$ could be determined with sufficient precision to address the long-standing discrepancy between the lattice calculations and phenomenological determinations.

Relativistic corrections to gluon fragmentation into the $^3P_{J}^{[1,8]}$ states

We compute relativistic corrections to the gluon fragmentation functions to ${}^3P_J^{[1,8]}$ Fock states of heavy quarkonium within non-relativistic QCD factorization framework. We find that, at $\mathcal{O}(v^2)$ sub-leading order, the $S$-$D$ mixing effect must be taken into account to absorb the infrared divergence of spin-triplet $P$-wave production within full QCD into the NRQCD long-distance matrix elements. Unlike the $S$-wave case, we find that the short-distance coefficients of the fragmentation functions at leading and sub-leading order are no longer proportional to each other. However, upon convolution with the gluon production cross section, their ratios are almost constant across the whole $p_T$ region. We find the relativistic corrections to be negative and substantial, which makes them a non-negligible ingredient in the study of $J/ψ$ production at the LHC.

Next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to double prompt $J/ψ$ hadroproduction

Within the framework of nonrelativistic-QCD (NRQCD) factorization, we perform a comprehensive investigation of the color singlet (CS) contribution to prompt $J/ψ$ pair production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at next-to-leading order (NLO) in $α_s$. Specifically, we compare our NLO predictions with measurements from the LHCb, CMS, and ATLAS Collaborations. We find that the CS contribution itself can well describe the LHCb data in most of the experimental bins, except in the regions where the fixed-order calculation is spoiled by the emission of soft or hard-collinear gluons. In the CMS and ATLAS cases, however, the CS predictions greatly undershoot both the measured total and differential cross sections, despite sizable $K$ factors, of 2--3, for the total cross sections.

Next-to-leading-order relativistic and QCD corrections to prompt $\boldsymbol{J/ψ}$ pair photoproduction at future $\boldsymbol{e^+e^-}$ colliders

Within the framework of nonrelativistic-QCD factorization, we calculate both the next-to-leading-order relativistic and QCD corrections to prompt $J/ψ$ pair production, with feeddown from $ψ(2S)$ mesons, via photon-photon collisions at future $e^+e^-$ colliders including the Future Circular Lepton Collider (FCC-ee), the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC), and the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC). We present total cross sections and distributions in single $J/ψ$ transverse momentum and rapidity, and in $J/ψ$ pair invariant mass. The relativistic and QCD corrections both turn out to be large and negative. Yet, the production rates are large enough for useful experimental studies.

Relativistic corrections to prompt double charmonium hadroproduction near threshold

We calculate the relativistic corrections to prompt $J/ψ$ pair and $J/ψ+ψ(2S)$ hadroproduction through the color-singlet channel within the framework of nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization. The short-distance coefficients are obtained by matching full-QCD and NRQCD calculations at the partonic level, in which both squared amplitude and phase space are expanded in $v^2$. We find that such an expansion of the phase space spoils the convergence of NRQCD factorization near the production threshold. To fix this problem, we propose to modify the matching between full QCD and NRQCD by adopting the physical phase space. In this modified approach, the theoretical uncertainties due to the choice of charm quark mass $m_c$ are largely reduced and the overall agreement of our predictions with LHC data is significantly improved, both as for total and differential cross sections.

Theory for the FCC-ee : Report on the 11th FCC-ee Workshop

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) at CERN, a proposed 100-km circular facility with several colliders in succession, culminates with a 100 TeV proton-proton collider. It offers a vast new domain of exploration in particle physics, with orders of magnitude advances in terms of Precision, Sensitivity and Energy. The implementation plan foresees, as a first step, an Electroweak Factory electron-positron collider. This high luminosity facility, operating between 90 and 365 GeV centre-of-mass energy, will study the heavy particles of the Standard Model, Z, W, Higgs, and top with unprecedented accuracy. The Electroweak Factory $e^+e^-$ collider constitutes a real challenge to the theory and to precision calculations, triggering the need for the development of new mathematical methods and software tools. A first workshop in 2018 had focused on the first FCC-ee stage, the Tera-Z, and confronted the theoretical status of precision Standard Model calculations on the Z-boson resonance to the experimental demands. The second workshop in January 2019, which is reported here, extended the scope to the next stages, with the production of W-bosons (FCC-ee-W), the Higgs boson (FCC-ee-H) and top quarks (FCC-ee-tt). In particular, the theoretical precision in the determination of the crucial input parameters, alpha_QED, alpha_QCD, M_W, m_t at the level of FCC-ee requirements is thoroughly discussed. The requirements on Standard Model theory calculations were spelled out, so as to meet the demanding accuracy of the FCC-ee experimental potential. The discussion of innovative methods and tools for multi-loop calculations was deepened. Furthermore, phenomenological analyses beyond the Standard Model were discussed, in particular the effective theory approaches. The reports of 2018 and 2019 serve as white papers of the workshop results and subsequent developments.

Inclusive $J/ψ$ and $η_c$ production in $Υ$ decay at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^5)$ in nonrelativistic QCD factorization

We study $J/ψ$ and $η_c$ inclusive production in $Υ$ decay within the framework of nonrelativistic-QCD (NRQCD) factorization. In the latter case, for which no experimental data exist so far, we also include the $h_c$ feed-down contribution. We calculate the short distance coefficients completely through $\mathcal{O}(α_s^5)$. The NRQCD predictions for the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(Υ\to J/ψ+X)$ via direct production, evaluated with different sets of long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs), all agree with the experimental data in a reasonable range of renormalization scale. Using $η_c$ and $h_c$ LDMEs obtained from $J/ψ$ and $χ_c$ ones via heavy-quark spin symmetry, we find that the bulk of $\mathcal{B}(Υ\toη_c+X)$ via prompt production arises from the $c\bar{c}({}^3\!S_1^{[8]})$ Fock state. The experimental study of this decay process would, therefore, provide a particularly clean probe of the color octet mechanism of heavy-quarkonium production.

Double prompt $J/ψ$ hadroproduction in the parton Reggeization approach with high-energy resummation

We study double prompt $J/ψ$ hadroproduction within the nonrelativistic-QCD factorization formalism adopting the parton Reggeization approach to treat initial-state radiation in a gauge invariant and infrared-safe way. We present first predictions for the cross section distributions in the transverse momenta of the subleading $J/ψ$ meson and the $J/ψ$ pair. Already at leading order in $α_s$, these predictions as well as those for the total cross section and its distributions in the invariant mass $m_{ψψ}$ and the rapidity separation $|Y|$ of the $J/ψ$ pair nicely agree with recent ATLAS and CMS measurements, except for the large-$m_{ψψ}$ and large-$|Y|$ regions, where the predictions substantially undershoot the data. In the latter regions, BFKL resummation is shown to enhance the cross sections by up to a factor of two and so to improve the description of the data.

Near-resonance tidal evolution of the Earth-Moon system influenced by orbital-scale climate change

We build a conceptual coupled model of the climate and tidal evolution of the Earth-Moon system to find the influence of the former on the latter. An energy balance model is applied to calculate steady-state temperature field from the mean annual insolation as a function of varying astronomical parameters. A harmonic oscillator model is applied to integrate the lunar orbit and Earth's rotation with the tidal torque dependent on the dominant natural frequency of ocean. An ocean geometry acts as a bridge between temperature and oceanic frequency. On assumptions of a fixed hemispherical continent and an equatorial circular lunar orbit, considering only the 41 kyr periodicity of Earth's obliquity $\varepsilon$ and the $M_2$ tide, simulations are performed near tidal resonance for $10^6$ yr. It is verified that the climate can influence the tidal evolution via ocean. Compared with the tidal evolution with constant $\varepsilon$, that with varying $\varepsilon$ is slowed down; the Earth-Moon distance oscillates in phase with $\varepsilon$ before the resonance maximum but exactly out of phase after that; the displacement of the oscillation is in positive correlation with the difference between oceanic frequency and tidal frequency.

Deciphering the $X(3872)$ via its polarization in prompt production at the CERN LHC

Based on the hypothesis that the $X(3872)$ exotic hadron is a mixture of $χ_{c1}(2P)$ and other states and that its prompt hadroproduction predominately proceeds via its $χ_{c1}(2P)$ component, we calculate the prompt-$X(3872)$ polarization at the CERN LHC through next-to-leading order in $α_s$ within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD, including both the color-singlet $^3\!P_1^{[1]}$ and color-octet $^3\!S_1^{[8]}$ $c\bar c$ Fock states. We also consider the polarization of the $J/ψ$ produced by the subsequent $X(3872)$ decay. We predict that, under ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb experimental conditions, the $X(3872)$ is largely longitudinally polarized, while the $J/ψ$ is largely transversely polarized. We propose that the LHC experiments perform such polarization measurements to pin down the nature of the $X(3872)$ and other $X$, $Y$, $Z$ exotic states with non-zero spin.

Breakdown of NRQCD Factorization in Processes Involving Two Quarkonia and its Cure

We study inclusive processes involving two heavy quarkonia in nonrelativisitic QCD (NRQCD) and demonstrate that, in the presence of two P-wave Fock states, NRQCD factorization breaks down, leaving uncanceled infrared singularities. As phenomenologically important examples, we consider the decay $Υ\to χ_{cJ}+X$ via $b\bar{b}({}^3P_{J_b}^{[8]})\to c\bar{c}({}^3P_J^{[1]})+gg$ and the production process $e^+e^-\to J/ψ+χ_{cJ}+X$ via $e^{+}e^{-}\to c\bar{c}({}^3P_{J_1}^{[8]})+c\bar{c}({}^3P_J^{[1]})+g$. We infer that such singularities will appear for double quarkonium hadroproduction at next-to-leading order. As a solution to this problem, we introduce to NRQCD effective field theory new types of operators whose quantum corrections absorb these singularities.

Inclusive $χ_{cJ}$ production in $Υ$ decay at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^5)$ in NRQCD factorization

Inclusive $χ_{cJ}$ $(J=0,1,2)$ production from $Υ(1S)$ decay is studied within the framework of nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization at leading order in $v_Q^2$, which includes the contributions of $b\bar{b}({}^3S_1^{[1]})\to c\bar{c}(^3P_J^{[1]})+X$ and $b\bar{b}({}^3S_1^{[1]})\to c\bar{c}(^3S_1^{[8]})+X$. For both channels, the short-distance coefficients are calculated through ${\cal O}(α_s^5)$, which is next-to-leading order for the second one. By fitting to the measured $Υ(1S)$ branching fractions to $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$, we obtain the color-octet long-distance matrix element (LDME) $\langle\mathcal{O}^{χ_{c0}}({}^3S_1^{[8]})\rangle =(4.04\pm0.47_{-0.34}^{+0.67})\times10^{-3}$ GeV$^3$, where the first error is experimental and the second one due to the renormalization scale dependence, if we use as input $\langle\mathcal{O}^{χ_{c0}}({}^3P_0^{[1]})\rangle=0.107$ GeV$^5$ as obtained via potential-model analysis. Previous LDME sets, extracted from data of prompt $χ_{cJ}$ hadroproduction, yield theoretical predictions that systematically undershoot or mildly overshoot the experimental values of $\mathcal{B}(Υ\to χ_{cJ}+X)$.

Complete Nonrelativistic-QCD Prediction for Prompt Double $J/ψ$ Hadroproduction

We perform a complete study of prompt double $J/ψ$ hadroproduction at leading order in the nonrelativistic-QCD factorization framework by including all possible pairings of the $c\bar{c}$ Fock states ${}^1\!S_0^{[8]}$, ${}^3\!S_1^{[1,8]}$, and ${}^3\!P_J^{[1,8]}$ with $J=0,1,2$. We find that the ${}^1\!S_0^{[8]}$ and ${}^3\!P_J^{[8]}$ channels of $J/ψ$ and $ψ^\prime$ production and the ${}^3\!P_J^{[1]}$ and ${}^3\!S_1^{[8]}$ channels of $χ_{cJ}$ production, which have been overlooked so far, greatly dominate at large invariant masses and rapidity separations of the $J/ψ$ pair, and that their inclusion nearly fills the large gap between previous incomplete predictions within the color-singlet model and the recent measurement by the CMS Collaboration at the CERN LHC, leaving room for next-to-leading-order corrections of typical size.

Relativistic corrections to prompt $J/ψ$ photo- and hadroproduction

We systematically calculate the relativistic corrections to prompt $J/ψ$ photoproduction and hadroproduction using the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD. Specifically, we include the ${}^3\!S_1^{[1]}$ and ${}^3\!P_{J}^{[1]}$ color-singlet and the ${}^3\!S_1^{[8]}$, ${}^1\!S_{0}^{[8]}$, and ${}^3\!P_{J}^{[8]}$ color-octet channels as well as the effects due to the mixing between the ${}^3\!S_1^{[8]}$ and ${}^3\!D_1^{[8]}$ channels. We provide all the squared hard-scattering amplitudes in analytic form. Assuming the nonrelativistic-QCD long-distance matrix elements to satisfy the velocity scaling rules, we find the relativistic corrections to be appreciable, except in the ${}^3\!S_1^{[1]}$ color-singlet channel of hadroproduction. We also observe significant differences in the line shapes of the relativistic corrections between photoproduction and hadroproduction.

Relativistic corrections to $J/ψ$ polarization in photo- and hadroproduction

We systematically calculate the relativistic corrections to the polarization variables of prompt $J/ψ$ photoproduction and hadroproduction using the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD. Assuming the nonrelativistic-QCD long-distance matrix elements to satisfy the velocity scaling rules, we find the relativistic corrections to be appreciable, especially at small transverse momentum $p_T$ and large inelasticity $z$. The results obtained here and in our previous work on the unpolarized yield [Phys. Rev. D 90, 014045 (2014)] will help to render global analyses of prompt $J/ψ$ production data more complete and hopefully to shed light on the $J/ψ$ polarization puzzle.
