Nitrogen-Loud Quasars from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. I. Sample Selection and Basic Properties

We present the largest sample to date of nitrogen-loud (N-loud) quasars with strong broad N IV] $\lambda1486$ and/or N III] $\lambda1750$ emission lines over the redshift range $1.6 < z < 4.3$, selected from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Data Release 1. The final sample contains 1,993 N-loud quasars, corresponding to about 1.2% of the parent quasar sample. The $L_{1450}$ distribution of the N-loud quasars is broadly similar to that of the DESI parent sample, but their redshift distribution is distinct, with a stronger concentration around $z \sim 2.5$--3. Their composite spectrum displays a broadly similar UV continuum shape to that of the parent quasars, while showing significantly enhanced broad nitrogen emission features, including N V, N IV], and N III]. Other metal emission features also show a moderate enhancement. Relative to a control sample matched in redshift and UV continuum luminosity, the N-loud quasars show systematically narrower broad C IV and Mg II emission lines, lower single-epoch virial black hole masses, and higher Eddington ratios, suggesting that N-loud quasars may preferentially appear during a relatively rapid black hole accretion phase. The radio-loud fraction is 10.1%, with the highest fraction among objects exhibiting both N III] and N IV] emission. The catalog provides a statistical baseline for future studies of nitrogen enhancement and its physical origin.

Radio Activity Across Accretion State Changes in Changing-look AGNs: Insights from FIRST and VLASS over Two Decades

Changing-look active galactic nuclei (CL-AGNs) provide a unique opportunity to probe the coupling between accretion flows and relativistic jets in supermassive black holes. We investigate the long-term radio behavior of CL-AGNs over approximately 20 years by combining FIRST and VLASS observations with quasi-simultaneous optical spectroscopy and photometry. From a parent sample of 1092 CL-AGNs, we identify 58 sources with radio detections. Radio-detected CL-AGNs exhibit systematically higher radio kinetic efficiency, quantified by \(P_{\rm j}/L_{\rm bol}\), than both typical radio-detected AGNs and radio transients, consistent with their preference for low Eddington ratios. At the population level, the expected anti-correlation between radio emission and accretion rate is weak. However, a clear source-by-source anti-correlation emerges in a small subset of CL-AGNs with continuous multi-epoch coverage. We further identify four radio transients, including both radio turn-on and turn-off events, and one source exhibiting a multiwavelength flare that may be indicative of tidal disruption event-like activity. These results suggest that radio activity in CL-AGNs is not governed by instantaneous accretion state changes but is instead regulated by long-term accretion history and jet evolution, with additional stochastic or transient channels contributing in rare cases.

Changing-look Active Galactic Nuclei from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument. V. Dramatic Variability in High-Ionization Broad Emission Lines

We present a systematic search for changing-look (CL) quasars at high redshift z > 0.9 by cross-matching the spectroscopic datasets from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Data Release 1 and Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 18. We identify 97 CL quasars showing significant variability in high-ionization broad emission lines, including 45 turn-on and 52 turn-off events, corresponding to a detection rate of approximately 0.042%. This rate is lower than that found for low-ionization CL quasars, likely due to both selection effects and physical differences in high-ionization lines. Based on the CL quasar sample, we find that CL quasars generally exhibit lower accretion rates compared to typical quasars, with average Eddington ratios of log lambda_Edd approximately -1.14 in the bright state and approximately -1.39 in the dim state, compared to approximately -0.65 for typical quasars. While high-ionization lines in CL quasars follow the Baldwin effect on a population level, some individual sources show inverse Baldwin trends. We also find a positive correlation between the variability of high-ionization lines such as Mg II and C III] and the change in bolometric luminosity. In addition, we estimate a characteristic rest-frame timescale of approximately 3 years for CL transitions, with no significant difference between turn-on and turn-off cases. Taken together, these results support an accretion-driven origin for the CL phenomenon and provide new insights into the variability of high-ionization emission lines.

Gleeok's Fire-breathing: Triple Flares of AT 2021aeuk within Five Years from the Active Galaxy SDSS J161259.83+421940.3

We present a noteworthy transient AT 2021aeuk exhibiting three distinct optical flares between 2018 and 2023. It is hosted in a radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxy, with an optical image showing a minor tidal morphology and a red mid-infrared color W1-W2=1.1. Flares II and III exhibit rapid rises, and long-term decays (around 1000 days) with recurring after-peak bumps. The g-r color after subtracting the reference magnitude exhibited a rapid drop and recovery during Flare II, followed by the minor after-peak evolution in blue colors. We applied a canonical tidal disruption event (TDE) fitting on the light curves which gives a decay index p of $-2.99_{-0.14}^{+0.13}$ for Flare II and $-1.61_{-0.65}^{+0.34}$ for Flare III. The blackbody fitting shows lower temperatures ($\sim 10^{3.8}$K) with minor after-peak evolution. The blackbody radius ($\gtrsim 10^{16}\ \rm cm$) and luminosity ($\sim 10^{45}\rm erg\ s^{-1}$) are larger than the typical TDE sample's. The time lag (in rest frame) between ZTF g- and r-band ($\rm τ_{g,r}=3.4^{+1.0}_{-0.9}$ days) significantly exceeds the prediction from the standard accretion disk. Pre-burst spectra reveal prominent Bowen fluorescence lines, indicating a vigorous or potentially long-lasting process that enriches the local metallicity. Additionally, we derived black hole masses of $\log\it{M}_{\bullet}\rm=7.09^{+0.18}_{-0.31}\ \it{M}_{\odot}$ and $\log\it{M}_{\bullet}\rm=7.52^{+0.08}_{-0.10}\ \it{M}_{\odot}$ using $\rm Hβ$ and $\rm Hα$ emission lines. The variation and recurring features of AT 2021aeuk are not likely induced by the radio-beaming effect or Type-II superluminous supernova (SLSN-II), however, we cannot rule out the possibility of TDE or enhanced active galactic nuclei (AGN) accretion process. The unusually high occurrence of three flares within five years may also induced by the complex local environment.

Investigation of the near-threshold cluster resonance in $^{14}\rm{C}$

An experiment for $p(^{14}\rm{C}$,$^{14}\rm{C}^{*}\rightarrow^{10}\rm{Be}+α)\mathit{p}$ inelastic excitation and decay was performed in inverse kinematics at a beam energy of 25.3 MeV/u. A series of $^{14}\rm{C}$ excited states, including a new one at 18.3(1) MeV, were observed which decay to various states of the final nucleus of $^{10}\rm{Be}$. A specially designed telescope-system, installed around the zero degree, played an essential role in detecting the resonant states near the $α$-separation threshold. A state at 14.1(1) MeV is clearly identified, being consistent with the predicted band-head of the molecular rotational band characterized by the $π$-bond linear-chain-configuration. Further clarification of the properties of this exotic state is suggested by using appropriate reaction tools.

New Empirical Formula for ({/gamma}, n) reaction cross section near to GDR Peak for elements with Z \geq 60

A new empirical formula has been developed that describes the $(γ, n)$ nuclear reaction cross sections for the isotopes with $Z \geq 60$. The results were supported by calculations using TALYS - 1.6, EMPIRE - 3.2.2 nuclear modular codes. The energy region for incident photon energy have been selected near to the giant dipole resonance (GDR) peak energy. The evaluated empirical data were compared with available data in the experimental data library - EXFOR. The data produced using TALYS - 1.6 and EMPIRE - 3.2.2 were in good agreement with experimental data. We have tested and presented the reproducibility of the present new empirical formula. We observed the reproducibility of the new empirical formula near to GDR peak energy is in good agreement with the experimental data and remarkable dependency on key nuclei properties: the neutron, proton and atomic number of the nuclei. The behavior of nucleus near GDR peak energy, and dependency of GDR peak on the isotopic nature were predicted. An effort has been made to explain the deformation of the GDR peak in $(γ, n)$ nuclear reaction cross section for some isotopes, which could not reproduce with TALYS - 1.6 and EMPIRE - 3.2.2. The evaluated data have been presented for the isotopes 180W, 183W, 202Pb, 203Pb, 204Pb, 205Pb, 231Pa, 232U, 237U and 239Pu that have no previous measurements.
