Large solar energetic particle event that occurred on 2012 March 7 and its VDA analysis

On 2012 March 7, the STEREO Ahead and Behind spacecraft, along with the near-earth spacecraft (e.g. SOHO, Wind) situated between the two STEREO spacecraft, observed an extremely large global solar energetic particle (SEP) event in Solar Cycle 24. Two successive coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been detected close in time. From the multi-point in-situ observations, it can be found that this SEP event was caused by the first CME, and the second one was not involved. Using the velocity dispersion analysis (VDA), we find that for well magnetically connected point, the energetic protons and electrons are released nearly at the same time. The path lengths to STEREO-B(STB) of protons and electrons have distinct difference and deviate remarkably from the nominal Parker spiral path length, which is likely due to the presence of interplanetary magnetic structures situated between the source and the STB. Also the VDA method seems only to obtain reasonable results at well-connected locations and the inferred energetic particles release times in different energy channels are similar. We suggest that good-connection is crucial for obtaining both accurate release time and path length simultaneously, agreeing with the modeling result of Wang & Qin (2015).

Multi-scale Renormalization Group Methods for Effective Potentials with Multiple Scalar Fields

Multi-scale renormalization group (RG) methods are reviewed and applied to the analysis of the effective potential for radiative symmetry breaking with multiple scalar fields, allowing an extension of the Gildener & Weinberg (GW) method beyond the weak coupling limit. A model containing two interacting real scalar fields is used to illustrate multi-scale RG methods and the multi-scale RG functions of this model are calculated to one-loop order for the $β$ function and two-loop order for the anomalous mass dimension. The introduction of an extra renormalization scale allows the mapping of the effective potential in this model onto an RG-equivalent form with an O(2) symmetric structure along a particular trajectory in the multiple renormalization-scale space, leading to a simplified form of the effective potential. It is demonstrated that the physical content of the effective potential in the original model, referenced to a single conventional renormalization scale, can be extracted from a particular RG-trajectory that connects to this multi-scale O(2)-symmetric form of the effective potential. Extensions of these multi-scale methods for effective potentials in models containing multiple scalars with $O(M)\times O(N)$ symmetry are also discussed.

Viable dark matter via radiative symmetry breaking in a scalar singlet Higgs portal extension of the standard model

We consider generation of dark matter mass via radiative electroweak symmetry breaking in an extension of the conformal Standard Model containing a singlet scalar field with a Higgs portal interaction. Generating the mass from a sequential process of radiative electroweak symmetry breaking followed by a conventional Higgs mechanism can account for less than 35% of the cosmological dark matter abundance for dark matter mass $M_s>80 GeV$. However in a dynamical approach where both Higgs and scalar singlet masses are generated via radiative electroweak symmetry breaking we obtain much higher levels of dark matter abundance. At one-loop level we find abundances of 10%--100% with $106 GeV 80 GeV$ detection region of the next generation XENON experiment.

Is Radiative Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Consistent with a 125 GeV Higgs Mass?

The mechanism of radiative electroweak symmetry breaking occurs through loop corrections, and unlike conventional symmetry breaking where the Higgs mass is a parameter, the radiatively-generated Higgs mass is dynamically predicted. Pade approximations and an averaging method are developed to extend the Higgs mass predictions in radiative electroweak symmetry breaking from five- to nine-loop order in the scalar sector of the Standard Model, resulting in an upper bound on the Higgs mass of 141 GeV. The mass predictions are well-described by a geometric series behaviour, converging to an asymptotic Higgs mass of 124 GeV consistent with the recent ATLAS/CMS observations. Similarly, we find that the Higgs self-coupling converges to $λ=0.23$, which is significantly larger than its conventional symmetry breaking counterpart for a 124 GeV Higgs mass. In addition to this significant enhancement of the Higgs self-coupling and $HH\rightarrow HH$ scattering, we find that Higgs decays to gauge bosons are unaltered and the scattering processes $W_{L}^{+}W_{L}^{+}\rightarrow HH$, $Z_{L}Z_{L}\rightarrow HH$ are also enhanced, providing signals to distinguish conventional and radiative electroweak symmetry breaking mechanisms.

Removal of surface plasmon polariton eigenmodes degeneracy

The effect of the tilt angle of metal film on the transmissivity of subwavelength holes in optically thick metal film is investigated. The transmission efficiency is found can be highly dependent on the tilt angle. It is also found that when the input photons are polarized not along the eigenmode directions of surface plasmon polariton, a birefringent phenomenon is observed when the array with periodic of subwavelength holes is tilted. Linear polarization states can be changed to elliptical polarization states and a phase can be added between two eigenmodes. The phase is changed with the tilt angle. A model based on surface plasmon polariton eigenmodes degeneracy is presented to explain these experimental results.

Polarization properties of subwavelength hole arrays consisting of rectangular holes

Influence of hole shape on extraordinary optical transmission was investigated using hole arrays consisting of rectangular holes with different aspect ratio. It was found that the transmission could be tuned continuously by rotating the hole array. Further more, a phase was generated in this process, and linear polarization states could be changed to elliptical polarization states. This phase was correlated with the aspect ratio of the holes. An intuitional model was presented to explain these results.

Interference of surface plasmon polaritions controlled by the phase of incident light

Interference patterns of surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs) are observed in the extraordinary optical transmission through subwavelength holes in optically thick metal plate. It is found that the phase of incident light can be transferred to SPPs. We can control the destructive and constructive interference of SPPs by modulating the relative phase between two incident beams. Using a slightly displaced Mach-Zehnder interferometer, we also observe a SPPs interference pattern composed of bright and dark stripes.

Experimental entanglement verification and quantification via uncertainty relations

We report on experimental studies on entanglement quantification and verification based on uncertainty relations for systems consisting of two qubits. The new proposed measure is shown to be invariant under local unitary transformations, by which entanglement quantification is implemented for two-qubit pure states. The nonlocal uncertainty relations for two-qubit pure states are also used for entanglement verification which serves as a basic proposition and promise to be a good choice for verification of multipartite entanglement.

Influence of unsymmetrical periodicity on extraordinary transmission through periodic arrays of subwavelength holes

Quadrate hole array is explored to study the influence of unsymmetrical periodicity on extraordinary optical transmission through periodic arrays of subwavelength holes. It is found that the transmission efficiency of light and the ratio between transmission efficiencies of horizontal and vertical polarized light can be continuously tuned by rotating the quadrate hole array. We can calculate out the transmission spectra (including the heights and locations of peaks) for any rotation angle $θ$ with a simple theoretical model.

Linear Optical Implemention of a Quantum Network for Quantum Estimation

We present a scheme for simulating the quantum network of quantum estimation proposed by A. K. Ekert et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 217901 (2002)]. We experimentally implement the scheme with linear optical elements. We perform overlap measurements of two single-qubit states and entanglement-witness measurements of some two-qubit states. In addition, it can also be used for entanglement quantification for some kinds of states. From the other perspective, we physically realize the positive but not completely positive map, transposition.

Spatial mode properties of plasmon assisted transmission

Orbital angular momentum of photons is explored to study the spatial mode properties of plasmon assisted transmission process. We found that photons carrying different orbital angular momentums have different transmission efficiencies, while the coherence between these spatial modes can be preserved.

Experimental Entanglement Distillation of Two-qubit Mixed States Under Local filtering Operations

We experimentally demonstrate optimal entanglement distillation from two forms of two-qubit mixed states under local filtering operations according to the constructive method intruduced by F. Verstraete et al. [Phys. Rev. A 64, 010101(R) (2001)]. In principle, our set-up can be easily applied to distilling entanglement from arbitrary two-qubit partially mixed states. We also test the violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shinmony-Holt (CHSH) inequality for the distilled state from the first form of mixed state to show its "hidden non-locality".

We present an experimental demonstration to manipulate the width and position of the down-converted beam waist. Our results can be used to engineer the two-photon orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled states (such as concentrating OAM entangled states) and generate Hermite-Gaussian (HG) modes entangled states.
