Using Machine Learning to Predict Realized Variance

In this paper we formulate a regression problem to predict realized volatility by using option price data and enhance VIX-styled volatility indices' predictability and liquidity. We test algorithms including regularized regression and machine learning methods such as Feedforward Neural Networks (FNN) on S&P 500 Index and its option data. By conducting a time series validation we find that both Ridge regression and FNN can improve volatility indexing with higher prediction performance and fewer options required. The best approach found is to predict the difference between the realized volatility and the VIX-styled index's prediction rather than to predict the realized volatility directly, representing a successful combination of human learning and machine learning. We also discuss suitability of different regression algorithms for volatility indexing and applications of our findings.

Generalizing Geometric Brownian Motion

To convert standard Brownian motion $Z$ into a positive process, Geometric Brownian motion (GBM) $e^{βZ_t}, β>0$ is widely used. We generalize this positive process by introducing an asymmetry parameter $ α\geq 0$ which describes the instantaneous volatility whenever the process reaches a new low. For our new process, $β$ is the instantaneous volatility as prices become arbitrarily high. Our generalization preserves the positivity, constant proportional drift, and tractability of GBM, while expressing the instantaneous volatility as a randomly weighted $L^2$ mean of $α$ and $β$. The running minimum and relative drawup of this process are also analytically tractable. Letting $α= β$, our positive process reduces to Geometric Brownian motion. By adding a jump to default to the new process, we introduce a non-negative martingale with the same tractabilities. Assuming a security's dynamics are driven by these processes in risk neutral measure, we price several derivatives including vanilla, barrier and lookback options.

Learning non-Higgsable gauge groups in 4D F-theory

We apply machine learning techniques to solve a specific classification problem in 4D F-theory. For a divisor $D$ on a given complex threefold base, we want to read out the non-Higgsable gauge group on it using local geometric information near $D$. The input features are the triple intersection numbers among divisors near $D$ and the output label is the non-Higgsable gauge group. We use decision tree to solve this problem and achieved 85%-98% out-of-sample accuracies for different classes of divisors, where the data sets are generated from toric threefold bases without (4,6) curves. We have explicitly generated a large number of analytic rules directly from the decision tree and proved a small number of them. As a crosscheck, we applied these decision trees on bases with (4,6) curves as well and achieved high accuracies. Additionally, we have trained a decision tree to distinguish toric (4,6) curves as well. Finally, we present an application of these analytic rules to construct local base configurations with interesting gauge groups such as SU(3).

Black Rings in Supergravity

We construct black ring solutions in five-dimensional $U(1)^3$ supergravity which carry three dipole charges, three electric charges and one angular momentum parameter. These solutions are written in a form that is sufficiently compact that their global and thermodynamic properties can be studied explicitly. In particular, we find that the Smarr formula is obeyed regardless of whether or not conical singularities are present, whereas the first law of thermodynamics holds only in the absence of conical singularities. We also present black ring solutions with three background magnetic fields.

Strings on AdS Wormholes and Nonsingular Black Holes

Certain AdS black holes in the STU model can be conformally scaled to wormhole and black hole solutions of an f(R) type theory which have two asymptotically AdS regions and are completely free of curvature singularities. While there is a delta-function source for the dilaton, classical string probes are not sensitive to this singularity. If the AdS/CFT correspondence can be applied in this context, then the wormhole background describes a phase in which two copies of a conformal field theory interact with each other, whereas the nonsingular black hole describes entangled states. By studying the behavior of open strings on these backgrounds, we extract a number of features of the quarks and anti-quarks that live in the field theories. In the interacting phase, we find that there is a maximum speed with which the quarks can move without losing energy, beyond which energy is transferred from a quark in one field theory to a quark in the other. We also compute the rate at which moving quarks within entangled states lose energy to the two surrounding plasmas. While a quark-antiquark pair within a single field theory exhibits Coulomb interaction for small separation, a quark in one field theory exhibits spring-like confinement with an anti-quark in the other field theory. For the entangled states, we study how the quark-antiquark screening length depends on temperature and chemical potential. In the interacting phase of the two field theories, a quadruplet made up of one quark-antiquark pair in each field theory can undergo transitions involving how the quarks and antiquarks are paired in terms of the screening.

Marginal Deformations of Non-Relativistic Field Theories

We construct the supergravity duals of marginal deformations of a (0,2) Landau-Ginsburg theory that describes the supersymmetric lowest Landau level. These deformations preserve supersymmetry and it is proposed that they are associated with the introduction of a phase in the (0,2) superpotential. We also consider marginal deformations of various field theories that exhibit Schrodinger symmetry and Lifshitz scaling. This includes countably-infinite examples with dynamical exponent z=2 based on the Sasaki-Einstein spaces Y^{p,q} and L^{p,q,r}, as well as an example with general dynamical exponent z >= 1.

NNLO hard functions in massless QCD

We derive the hard functions for all 2->2 processes in massless QCD up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the strong coupling constant. By employing the known one- and two-loop helicity amplitudes for these processes, we obtain analytic expressions for the ultraviolet and infrared finite, minimally subtracted hard functions, which are matrices in color space. These hard functions will be useful in carrying out higher-order resummations in processes such as dijet and highly energetic top-quark pair production by means of soft-collinear effective theory methods.

Warped Ricci-flat reductions

We present a simple class of warped-product vacuum (Ricci-flat) solutions to ten and eleven-dimensional supergravity, where the internal space is flat and the warp factor supports de Sitter (dS) and anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacua in addition to trivial Minkowski vacua. We outline the construction of consistent Kaluza-Klein (KK) reductions and show that, although our vacuum solutions are non-supersymmetric, these are closely related to the bosonic part of well-known maximally supersymmetric reductions on spheres. We comment on the stability of our solutions, noting that (A)dS$_3$ vacua pass routine stability tests.

Contributions of the W-boson propagator to muon and tau leptonic decay rates

We derive closed expressions and useful expansions for the contributions of the tree-level W-boson propagator to the the muon and tau leptonic decay rates. Calling M and m the masses of the initial and final charged leptons, our results in the limit m=0 are valid to all orders in M^2/M_W^2. In the terms of O(m_j^2/M_W^2) (m_j=M,m), our leading corrections, of O(M^2/M_W^2), agree with the canonical value (3/5) M^2/M_W^2, while the coefficient of our subleading contributions, of O(m^2/M_W^2), differs from that reported in the recent literature. A possible explanation of the discrepancy is presented. The numerical effect of the O(m_j^2/M_W^2) corrections is briefly discussed. A general expression, valid for arbitrary values of M_W, M and m in the range M_W>M>m, is given in the Appendix. The paper also contains a review of the traditional definition and evaluation of the Fermi constant.

Brane Resolution Through Fibration

We consider p-branes with one or more circular directions fibered over the transverse space. The fibration, in conjunction with the transverse space having a blown-up cycle, enables these p-brane solutions to be completely regular. Some such circularly-wrapped D3-brane solutions describe flows from SU(N)^3 N=2 theory, F_0 theory, as well as an infinite family of superconformal quiver gauge theories, down to three-dimensional field theories. We discuss the operators that are turned on away from the UV fixed points. Similarly, there are wrapped M2-brane solutions which describe smooth flows from known three-dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons matter theories, such as ABJM theory. We also consider p-brane solutions on gravitational instantons, and discuss various ways in which U-duality can be applied to yield other non-singular solutions.

Boundary Contributions Using Fermion Pair Deformation

Continuing the study of boundary BCFW recursion relation of tree level amplitudes initiated in \cite{Feng:2009ei}, we consider boundary contributions coming from fermion pair deformation. We present the general strategy for these boundary contributions and demonstrate calculations using two examples, i.e, the standard QCD and deformed QCD with anomalous magnetic momentum coupling. As a by-product, we have extended BCFW recursion relation to off-shell gluon current, where because off-shell gluon current is not gauge invariant, a new feature must be cooperated.

Hidden Conformal Symmetry of Rotating Black Hole with four Charges

Kerr/CFT correspondence exhibits many remarkable connections between the near horizon Kerr black hole and a CFT. Recently, a hidden conformal symmetry in the solution space of Kerr black hole is shown by Castro, Maloney and Strominger. Applying the formula on a rotating black hole with four independent U(1) charges derived in string theory which is known as the 4D Cvetic-Youm solution, we show that the same hidden conformal symmetry is also held. The temperatures we derived match the Cardy formula correctly and we give a clarification about old explains on them. The calculation on entropy and absorption cross section is also given, which totally agrees with the previous results. This work together with previous ones in this series, robustly support the validity of the way in which the hidden conformal symmetry is derived, and reflect the evidence of Kerr/CFT correspondence.

BCFW Recursion Relation with Nonzero Boundary Contribution

The appearance of BCFW on-shell recursion relation has deepen our understanding of quantum field theory, especially the one with gauge boson and graviton. To be able to write the BCFW recursion relation, the knowledge of boundary contributions is needed. So far, most applications have been constrained to the cases where the boundary contribution is zero. In this paper, we show that for some theories, although there is no proper deformation to annihilate the boundary contribution, its effects can be analyzed in simple way, thus we do able to write down the BCFW recursion relation with boundary contributions. The examples we will present in this paper include the lambda-phi-four theory and Yukawa coupling between fermions and scalars.
