Selectively Combining Multiple Coverage Goals in Search-Based Unit Test Generation

Unit testing is a critical part of software development process, ensuring the correctness of basic programming units in a program (e.g., a method). Search-based software testing (SBST) is an automated approach to generating test cases. SBST generates test cases with genetic algorithms by specifying the coverage criterion (e.g., branch coverage). However, a good test suite must have different properties, which cannot be captured by using an individual coverage criterion. Therefore, the state-of-the-art approach combines multiple criteria to generate test cases. As combining multiple coverage criteria brings multiple objectives for optimization, it hurts the test suites' coverage for certain criteria compared with using the single criterion. To cope with this problem, we propose a novel approach named \textbf{smart selection}. Based on the coverage correlations among criteria and the coverage goals' subsumption relationships, smart selection selects a subset of coverage goals to reduce the number of optimization objectives and avoid missing any properties of all criteria. We conduct experiments to evaluate smart selection on $400$ Java classes with three state-of-the-art genetic algorithms. On average, smart selection outperforms combining all goals on $65.1\%$ of the classes having significant differences between the two approaches.

Gate-tunable chiral phonons in low-buckled group-IVA monolayers

We investigate the electric response of chiral phonons on the low-buckled group-IVA monolayers by performing first-principles calculations. The vertical electric field breaks the degeneracy of phonon modes at high-symmetry $\pm K$ points of the phonon Brillouin zone, and the size of the phononic gap is proportional to the strength of the electric field. The gapped phonon modes at $\pm K$ possess chiralities with considerable phonon circular polarizations and discrete phonon pseudoangular momenta. The chiralities of phonons are robust against the variation of the field strength, but reversed by changing the field direction. Electric control of chiral phonons adds a new dimension to the study of chiral phonons, which has potential use in the design of phononic and valley devices.

Multi-Label Classification with Label Graph Superimposing

Images or videos always contain multiple objects or actions. Multi-label recognition has been witnessed to achieve pretty performance attribute to the rapid development of deep learning technologies. Recently, graph convolution network (GCN) is leveraged to boost the performance of multi-label recognition. However, what is the best way for label correlation modeling and how feature learning can be improved with label system awareness are still unclear. In this paper, we propose a label graph superimposing framework to improve the conventional GCN+CNN framework developed for multi-label recognition in the following two aspects. Firstly, we model the label correlations by superimposing label graph built from statistical co-occurrence information into the graph constructed from knowledge priors of labels, and then multi-layer graph convolutions are applied on the final superimposed graph for label embedding abstraction. Secondly, we propose to leverage embedding of the whole label system for better representation learning. In detail, lateral connections between GCN and CNN are added at shallow, middle and deep layers to inject information of label system into backbone CNN for label-awareness in the feature learning process. Extensive experiments are carried out on MS-COCO and Charades datasets, showing that our proposed solution can greatly improve the recognition performance and achieves new state-of-the-art recognition performance.

StNet: Local and Global Spatial-Temporal Modeling for Action Recognition

Despite the success of deep learning for static image understanding, it remains unclear what are the most effective network architectures for the spatial-temporal modeling in videos. In this paper, in contrast to the existing CNN+RNN or pure 3D convolution based approaches, we explore a novel spatial temporal network (StNet) architecture for both local and global spatial-temporal modeling in videos. Particularly, StNet stacks N successive video frames into a \emph{super-image} which has 3N channels and applies 2D convolution on super-images to capture local spatial-temporal relationship. To model global spatial-temporal relationship, we apply temporal convolution on the local spatial-temporal feature maps. Specifically, a novel temporal Xception block is proposed in StNet. It employs a separate channel-wise and temporal-wise convolution over the feature sequence of video. Extensive experiments on the Kinetics dataset demonstrate that our framework outperforms several state-of-the-art approaches in action recognition and can strike a satisfying trade-off between recognition accuracy and model complexity. We further demonstrate the generalization performance of the leaned video representations on the UCF101 dataset.

Mott transition in the $π$-flux SU($4$) Hubbard model on a square lattice

We employ the projector quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study the ground-state properties of the square-lattice SU(4) Hubbard model with a $π$ flux per plaquette. In the weak coupling regime, its ground state is in the gapless Dirac semi-metal phase. With increasing repulsive interaction, we show that, a Mott transition occurs from the semimetal to the valence bond solid, accompanied by the $Z_4$ discrete symmetry breaking. Our simulations demonstrate the existence of a second-order phase transition, which confirms the Ginzburg-Landau analysis. The phase transition point and the critical exponent $η$ are also estimated. To account for the effect of a $π$ flux on the ordering in the strong coupling regime, we analytically derive by the perturbation theory the ring-exchange term which describes the leading-order difference between the $π$-flux and zero-flux SU(4) Hubbard models.

Triplet-Center Loss for Multi-View 3D Object Retrieval

Most existing 3D object recognition algorithms focus on leveraging the strong discriminative power of deep learning models with softmax loss for the classification of 3D data, while learning discriminative features with deep metric learning for 3D object retrieval is more or less neglected. In the paper, we study variants of deep metric learning losses for 3D object retrieval, which did not receive enough attention from this area. First , two kinds of representative losses, triplet loss and center loss, are introduced which could learn more discriminative features than traditional classification loss. Then, we propose a novel loss named triplet-center loss, which can further enhance the discriminative power of the features. The proposed triplet-center loss learns a center for each class and requires that the distances between samples and centers from the same class are closer than those from different classes. Extensive experimental results on two popular 3D object retrieval benchmarks and two widely-adopted sketch-based 3D shape retrieval benchmarks consistently demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed loss, and significant improvements have been achieved compared with the state-of-the-arts.

Divide and Fuse: A Re-ranking Approach for Person Re-identification

As re-ranking is a necessary procedure to boost person re-identification (re-ID) performance on large-scale datasets, the diversity of feature becomes crucial to person reID for its importance both on designing pedestrian descriptions and re-ranking based on feature fusion. However, in many circumstances, only one type of pedestrian feature is available. In this paper, we propose a "Divide and use" re-ranking framework for person re-ID. It exploits the diversity from different parts of a high-dimensional feature vector for fusion-based re-ranking, while no other features are accessible. Specifically, given an image, the extracted feature is divided into sub-features. Then the contextual information of each sub-feature is iteratively encoded into a new feature. Finally, the new features from the same image are fused into one vector for re-ranking. Experimental results on two person re-ID benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Especially, our method outperforms the state-of-the-art on the Market-1501 dataset.

GIFT: A Real-time and Scalable 3D Shape Search Engine

Projective analysis is an important solution for 3D shape retrieval, since human visual perceptions of 3D shapes rely on various 2D observations from different view points. Although multiple informative and discriminative views are utilized, most projection-based retrieval systems suffer from heavy computational cost, thus cannot satisfy the basic requirement of scalability for search engines. In this paper, we present a real-time 3D shape search engine based on the projective images of 3D shapes. The real-time property of our search engine results from the following aspects: (1) efficient projection and view feature extraction using GPU acceleration; (2) the first inverted file, referred as F-IF, is utilized to speed up the procedure of multi-view matching; (3) the second inverted file (S-IF), which captures a local distribution of 3D shapes in the feature manifold, is adopted for efficient context-based re-ranking. As a result, for each query the retrieval task can be finished within one second despite the necessary cost of IO overhead. We name the proposed 3D shape search engine, which combines GPU acceleration and Inverted File Twice, as GIFT. Besides its high efficiency, GIFT also outperforms the state-of-the-art methods significantly in retrieval accuracy on various shape benchmarks and competitions.

Finite-temperature valence-bond-solid transitions and thermodynamic properties of interacting SU($2N$) Dirac fermions

We investigate the SU($2N$) symmetry effects with $2N>2$ on the two-dimensional interacting Dirac fermions at finite temperatures, including the valence-bond-solid transition, the Pomeranchuk effect, the compressibility and the uniform spin susceptibility, by performing the determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the half-filled SU($2N$) Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice. The columnar valence-bond-solid (cVBS) phase only breaks the three-fold discrete symmetry, and thus can survive at finite temperatures. The disordered phase in the weak coupling regime is the thermal Dirac semi-metal state, while in the strong coupling regime it is largely a Mott state in which the cVBS order is thermally melted. The calculated entropy-temperature relations for various values of the Hubbard interaction $U$ show that, the Pomeranchuk effect occurs when the specific entropy is below a characteristic value of $S^*$ --- the maximal entropy per particle from the spin channel of local moments. The SU($2N$) symmetry enhances the Pomeranchuk effect, which facilitates the interaction-induced adiabatic cooling. Our work sheds new light on future explorations of novel states of matter with ultra-cold large-spin alkaline fermions.

Mott insulating states and quantum phase transitions of correlated SU(2N) Dirac fermions

The interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom in strongly correlated fermionic systems, in particular of Dirac fermions, is a long-standing problem in condensed matter physics. We investigate the competing orders in the half-filled SU(2N) Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, which can be accurately realized in optical lattices with large-spin ultra-cold alkaline-earth fermions. Employing large-scale projector determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we have explored quantum phase transitions from the gapless Dirac semi-metals to the gapped Mott-insulating phases in the SU(4) and SU(6) cases. Both of these Mott-insulating states are found to be columnar valence bond solid (cVBS) and to be absent of the antiferromagnetic Neel ordering and the loop current ordering. Inside the cVBS phases, the dimer ordering is enhanced by increasing fermion components and behaves non-monotonically as the interaction strength increases. Although the transitions generally should be of first order due to a cubic invariance possessed by the cVBS order, the coupling to gapless Dirac fermions can soften the transitions to second order through a non-analytic term in the free energy. Our simulations provide important guidance for the experimental exploration of novel states of matter with ultra-cold alkaline earth fermions.

Quantum Monte Carlo simulation of thermodynamic properties of SU(2N) ultracold fermions in optical lattices

We have systematically studied the thermodynamic properties of a two-dimensional half-filled SU(2N) Hubbard model on a square lattice by using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. The entropy-temperature relation, the isoentropy curve, and the probability distribution of the onsite occupation number are calculated in both SU(4) and SU(6) cases, which exhibit prominent features of the Pomeranchuk effect. We analyze these thermodynamic behaviors based on charge and spin energy scales. In the charge channel, the interaction strength that marks the crossover from the weak to strong interaction regimes increases with the number of fermion components. In the spin channel, increasing the number of fermion components enhances quantum spin fluctuations, which is shown in the simulations of uniform spin susceptibilities and antiferromagnetic structure factors.

Competing orders in the 2D half-filled SU(2N) Hubbard model through the pinning field quantum Monte-Carlo simulations

We non-perturbatively investigate the ground state magnetic properties of the 2D half-filled SU($2N$) Hubbard model in the square lattice by using the projector determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations combined with the method of local pinning fields. Long-range Neel orders are found for both the SU(4) and SU(6) cases at small and intermediate values of $U$. In both cases, the long-range Neel moments exhibit non-monotonic behavior with respect to $U$, which first grow and then drop as $U$ increases. This result is fundamentally different from the SU(2) case in which the Neel moments increase monotonically and saturate. In the SU(6) case, a transition to the columnar dimer phase is found in the strong interaction regime.
