Distributed estimation of many-body Hamiltonians via punctured surface code

We study how a punctured surface code can turn many local $Z$-type couplings into one protected logical signal for distributed quantum metrology, where the goal is to estimate a weighted sum of the coupling strengths. We consider an ordinary planar patch with two $X$-cut holes and develop a distributed sensing protocol in which all $Z$-type couplings correspond to the same nontrivial logical $\bar{Z}$ of the punctured surface code. When the couplings have prescribed placements on the lattice, we show that the relevant global condition is equivalent to the existence of a simple closed dual loop, called a witness, that has an odd number of intersections with every signal path. Together with a local clean-opening condition, this witness criterion gives a concrete punctured-code construction in which all signal paths realize the same nontrivial logical $\bar Z$. When only the abstract support structure is specified, disjoint supports are straightforward to realize, while overlapping supports are constrained by a stabilizer-difference condition, which we illustrate for three-body interactions. Overall, our results provide a novel, noise-robust distributed sensing protocol for many-body interactions, with corresponding topological design criteria.

Quantum-Geometric Fingerprints of Altermagnetic Order in Planar Magnetotransport

Identifying altermagnetic order through transport requires signatures that are sensitive to magnetic symmetry but do not rely on a net magnetization. Here we show that planar magnetotransport provides such quantum-geometric fingerprints. In two-dimensional altermagnets with $C_n\mathcal{T}$ magnetic symmetry, an in-plane Zeeman field explicitly breaks the mirror and emergent $C_{2z}$ symmetries that otherwise suppress intrinsic Hall and second-order transport responses. The resulting magnetic field susceptibilities of the Berry curvature and quantum metric produce linear planar Hall, nonlinear planar Hall, and nonreciprocal longitudinal responses. Crucially, the leading magnetic field powers and angular periodicities of these responses are fixed by the underlying altermagnetic order. For $d$-, $g$-, and $i$-wave altermagnets, we find distinct fingerprint patterns associated with quantum geometric susceptibilities. Our results establish planar magnetotransport as a symmetry selective probe of both band quantum geometry and altermagnetic order.

Quantum Mpemba-like effect in Unruh thermalization

We revisit the thermal nature of the Unruh effect within a quantum thermodynamic framework. For a Unruh-deWitt (UDW) detector in $n$-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, we demonstrate that its irreversible thermalization to a Gibbs equilibrium state follows distinct trajectories on the Bloch sphere, which depend on the types of fields the detector interacts with, as well as the spacetime dimensionality. Using thermodynamic process functions, particularly quantum coherence and heat that form the quantum First Law, we characterize the Unruh thermalization through a complementary time evolution between the trajectory-dependent rates of process functions. Grounded in information geometry, we further explore the kinematics of the detector state as it "flows" along the trajectory. In particular, we propose two heating/cooling protocols for the UDW detector undergoing Unruh thermalization. We observe a quantum Mpemba-like effect, characterized by faster heating than cooling in terms of Uhlmann fidelity "distance" change. Most significantly, we establish the maximum fidelity difference as a novel diagnostic that essentially distinguishes between Unruh thermalization and its classical counterpart, i.e., classical thermal bath-driven thermalization of an inertial UDW detector. This compelling criterion may serve as a hallmark of the quantum origin of the Unruh effect in future experimental detection and quantum simulation. Finally, we conclude with a general analysis of Unruh thermalization, starting from equal-fidelity non-thermal states, and demonstrate that the detectors' fidelity and "speed" of quantum evolution still exhibit a Mpemba-like behavior.

Reliable quantum master equation of the Unruh-DeWitt detector

In this paper, we present a method for estimating the validity range of the quantum Markovian master equation as applied to the Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) detector within a broader context, particularly without necessitating an exact solution for the detector's evolution. We propose a relaxed van Hove limit (i.e., late-time limit) and offer a perturbative estimate of the error order resulting from the standard derivation procedure of open quantum dynamics. Our primary findings include reliability criteria for the Markov approximation and conditions for the applicability of the rotating wave approximation. Nevertheless, the specific forms of these validity conditions rely on the details of the detector-field system, such as the spacetime background, the trajectory of the detector, and the type of quantum field being analyzed. Finally, we illustrate our results by reexamining the open dynamics of an accelerating UDW detector undergoing the Unruh effect, where the validity conditions narrow the parameter space to ensure the solution's reliability regarding the quantum Markovian master equation.

Relative entropy formulation of thermalization process in a Schwarzschild spacetime

We revisit the problem of the thermalization process in an entropic formulation for the Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) detector outside a Schwarzschild black hole. We derive the late-time dynamics of the detector in the context of open quantum system, and capture the path distinguishability and thermodynamic irreversibility of detector thermalization process by using quantum relative entropy (QRE). We find that beyond the Planckian transition rate, the refined thermalization process in detector Hilbert space can be distinguished by the time behavior of the related QRE. We show that the exotic position-dependent behaviors of the QRE emerge corresponding to different choices of black hole vacua (i.e., the Boulware, Hartle-Hawking, and Unruh vacua). Finally, from a perspective of quantum thermodynamics, we recast the free energy change of the UDW detector undergoing Hawking radiation into an entropic combination form, where the classical Kullback-Leibler divergence and quantum coherence are presented in specific QRE-like forms. With growing Hawking temperature, we find that the consumption rate of quantum coherence is larger than that of its classical counterpart.
