SepPrune: Structured Pruning for Efficient Deep Speech Separation

Although deep learning has substantially advanced speech separation in recent years, most existing studies continue to prioritize separation quality while overlooking computational efficiency, an essential factor for low-latency speech processing in real-time applications. In this paper, we propose SepPrune, the first structured pruning framework specifically designed to compress deep speech separation models and reduce their computational cost. SepPrune begins by analyzing the computational structure of a given model to identify layers with the highest computational burden. It then introduces a differentiable masking strategy to enable gradient-driven channel selection. Based on the learned masks, SepPrune prunes redundant channels and fine-tunes the remaining parameters to recover performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate that this learnable pruning paradigm yields substantial advantages for channel pruning in speech separation models, outperforming existing methods. Notably, a model pruned with SepPrune can recover 85% of the performance of a pre-trained model (trained over hundreds of epochs) with only one epoch of fine-tuning, and achieves convergence 36$\times$ faster than training from scratch. Code is available at https://github.com/itsnotacie/SepPrune.

Ferroelectric Switching in Hybrid Molecular Beam Epitaxy-Grown BaTiO3 Films

Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) is a promising synthesis technique for both heterostructure growth and epitaxial integration of ferroelectric BaTiO3. However, a direct measurement of the remnant polarization (P_r) has not been previously reported in MBE-grown BaTiO3 films. We report the in-situ growth of an all-epitaxial SrRuO3/BaTiO3/SrRuO3 heterostructure on Nb-doped SrTiO3 (001) substrates by hybrid MBE using metal-organic precursors. This capacitor structure consisting of 16 nm SrRuO3/40 nm BaTiO3/16 nm SrRuO3 shows hysteretic polarization-electric field (P-E) curves with P_r = 15 μC cm-2 at frequencies ranging from 500 Hz to 20 kHz, after isolating the intrinsic ferroelectric response from non-ferroelectric contributions using the Positive-Up-Negative-Down (PUND) method. We hypothesize that the asymmetry in switching behavior and current leakage has origins in structural defects.

MaRI: Material Retrieval Integration across Domains

Accurate material retrieval is critical for creating realistic 3D assets. Existing methods rely on datasets that capture shape-invariant and lighting-varied representations of materials, which are scarce and face challenges due to limited diversity and inadequate real-world generalization. Most current approaches adopt traditional image search techniques. They fall short in capturing the unique properties of material spaces, leading to suboptimal performance in retrieval tasks. Addressing these challenges, we introduce MaRI, a framework designed to bridge the feature space gap between synthetic and real-world materials. MaRI constructs a shared embedding space that harmonizes visual and material attributes through a contrastive learning strategy by jointly training an image and a material encoder, bringing similar materials and images closer while separating dissimilar pairs within the feature space. To support this, we construct a comprehensive dataset comprising high-quality synthetic materials rendered with controlled shape variations and diverse lighting conditions, along with real-world materials processed and standardized using material transfer techniques. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superior performance, accuracy, and generalization capabilities of MaRI across diverse and complex material retrieval tasks, outperforming existing methods.

MMGDreamer: Mixed-Modality Graph for Geometry-Controllable 3D Indoor Scene Generation

Controllable 3D scene generation has extensive applications in virtual reality and interior design, where the generated scenes should exhibit high levels of realism and controllability in terms of geometry. Scene graphs provide a suitable data representation that facilitates these applications. However, current graph-based methods for scene generation are constrained to text-based inputs and exhibit insufficient adaptability to flexible user inputs, hindering the ability to precisely control object geometry. To address this issue, we propose MMGDreamer, a dual-branch diffusion model for scene generation that incorporates a novel Mixed-Modality Graph, visual enhancement module, and relation predictor. The mixed-modality graph allows object nodes to integrate textual and visual modalities, with optional relationships between nodes. It enhances adaptability to flexible user inputs and enables meticulous control over the geometry of objects in the generated scenes. The visual enhancement module enriches the visual fidelity of text-only nodes by constructing visual representations using text embeddings. Furthermore, our relation predictor leverages node representations to infer absent relationships between nodes, resulting in more coherent scene layouts. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that MMGDreamer exhibits superior control of object geometry, achieving state-of-the-art scene generation performance. Coexistence of unconventional spin Hall effect and antisymmetric planar Hall effect in IrO$_2$

Crystal symmetry plays an important role in the Hall effects. Unconventional spin Hall effect (USHE), characterized by Dresselhaus and out-of-plane spins, has been observed in materials with low crystal symmetry. Recently, antisymmetric planar Hall effect (APHE) was discovered in rutile RuO2 and IrO2 (101) thin films, which also exhibit low crystal symmetry. In this study, we report the observation of both USHE and APHE in IrO2 (111) films, using spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) and harmonic Hall measurements, respectively. Notably, the unconventional spin torque efficiency from Dresselhaus spin was more than double that of a previous report. Additionally, the temperature dependence of APHE suggests that it arises from the Lorentz force, constrained by crystal symmetry. Symmetry analysis supports the coexistence of USHE and APHE and demonstrates that both originate from the crystal symmetry of IrO2 (111), paving the way for a deeper understanding of Hall effects and related physical phenomena.

Metallicity and Anomalous Hall Effect in Epitaxially-Strained, Atomically-thin RuO2 Films

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE), a hallmark of time-reversal symmetry breaking, has been reported in rutile RuO2, a debated metallic altermagnetic candidate. Previously, AHE in RuO2 was observed only in strain-relaxed thick films under extremely high magnetic fields (~50 T). Yet, in ultrathin strained films with distinctive anisotropic electronic structures, there are no reports, likely due to disorder and defects suppressing metallicity thus hindering its detection. Here, we demonstrate that ultrathin, fully-strained 2 nm TiO2/t nm RuO2/TiO2 (110) heterostructures, grown by hybrid molecular beam epitaxy, retain metallicity and exhibit a sizeable AHE at a significantly lower magnetic field (< 9 T). Density functional theory calculations reveal that epitaxial strain stabilizes a non-compensated magnetic ground state and reconfigures magnetic ordering in RuO2 (110) thin films. These findings establish ultrathin RuO2 as a platform for strain-engineered magnetism and underscore the transformative potential of epitaxial design in advancing spintronic technologies.

High-Mobility Carriers in Epitaxial IrO2 Films Grown using Hybrid Molecular Beam Epitaxy

Binary rutile oxides of 5d metals such as IrO2, stand out as a paradox due to limited experimental studies despite the rich predicted quantum phenomena. Here, we investigate the electrical transport properties of IrO2 by engineering epitaxial thin films grown via hybrid molecular beam epitaxy. Our findings reveal phonon-limited carrier transport and thickness-dependent anisotropic in-plane resistance in IrO2 (110) films, the latter suggesting a complex relationship between strain relaxation and orbital hybridization. Magneto-transport measurements reveal a previously unobserved non-linear Hall effect. A two-carrier analysis of this effect shows the presence of minority carriers with mobility exceeding 3000 cm2/Vs at 1.8 K. These results point towards emergent properties in 5d metal oxides that can be controlled using dimensionality and epitaxial strain.

Deep-ultraviolet transparent conducting SrSnO3 via heterostructure design

Exploration and advancements in ultra-wide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors are pivotal for next-generation high-power electronics and deep-ultraviolet (DUV) optoelectronics. A critical challenge lies in finding a semiconductor that is highly transparent to DUV wavelengths yet conductive with high mobility at room temperature. Here, we achieved both high transparency and high conductivity by employing a thin heterostructure design. The heterostructure facilitated high conductivity by screening phonons using free carriers, while the atomically thin films ensured high transparency. We utilized a heterostructure comprising SrSnO3/La:SrSnO3/GdScO3 (110) and applied electrostatic gating to effectively separate electrons from their dopant atoms. This led to a modulation of carrier density from 1018 cm-3 to 1020 cm-3, with room temperature mobilities ranging from 40 to 140 cm2V-1s-1. The phonon-limited mobility, calculated from first principles, closely matched experimental results, suggesting that room-temperature mobility could be further increased with higher electron density. Additionally, the sample exhibited 85% optical transparency at a 300 nm wavelength. These findings highlight the potential of heterostructure design for transparent UWBG semiconductor applications, especially in deep-ultraviolet regime.

Thickness-dependent insulator-to-metal transition in epitaxial RuO2 films

Epitaxially grown RuO2 films on TiO2 (110) exhibit significant in-plane strain anisotropy, with a compressive strain of - 4.7% along the [001] crystalline direction and a tensile strain of +2.3% along [1-10]. As the film thickness increases, anisotropic strain relaxation is expected. By fabricating Hall bar devices with current channels along two in-plane directions <001> and <1-10>, we revealed anisotropic in-plane transport in RuO2/TiO2 (110) films grown via solid-source metal-organic molecular beam epitaxy approach. For film thicknesses (t_film) < 3.6 nm, the resistivity along <001> exceeds that along <1-10> direction at all temperatures. With further decrease in film thicknesses, we uncover a transition from metallic to insulating behavior at t_film <2.1 nm. Our combined temperature- and magnetic field-dependent electrical transport measurements reveal that this transition from metallic to insulating behavior is driven by electron-electron interactions.

Fast and Facile Synthesis Route to Epitaxial Oxide Membrane Using a Sacrificial Layer

The advancement in thin-film exfoliation for synthesizing oxide membranes has opened up new possibilities for creating artificially-assembled heterostructures with structurally and chemically incompatible materials. The sacrificial layer method is a promising approach to exfoliate as-grown films from a compatible material system, allowing their integration with dissimilar materials. Nonetheless, the conventional sacrificial layers often possess intricate stoichiometry, thereby constraining their practicality and adaptability, particularly when considering techniques like Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). This is where easy-to-grow binary alkaline earth metal oxides with a rock salt crystal structure are useful. These oxides, which include (Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba)O, can be used as a sacrificial layer covering a much broader range of lattice parameters compared to conventional sacrificial layers and are easily dissolvable in deionized water. In this study, we show the epitaxial growth of single-crystalline perovskite SrTiO3 (STO) on sacrificial layers consisting of crystalline SrO, BaO, and Ba1-xCaxO films, employing a hybrid MBE method. Our results highlight the rapid (< 5 minutes) dissolution of the sacrificial layer when immersed in deionized water, facilitating the fabrication of millimeter-sized STO membranes. Using high-resolution x-ray diffraction, atomic-force microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, impedance spectroscopy, and scattering-type near-field optical microscopy (SNOM), we demonstrate epitaxial STO membranes with bulk-like intrinsic dielectric properties. The employment of alkaline earth metal oxides as sacrificial layers is likely to simplify membrane synthesis, particularly with MBE, thus expanding research possibilities.

Mask to reconstruct: Cooperative Semantics Completion for Video-text Retrieval

Recently, masked video modeling has been widely explored and significantly improved the model's understanding ability of visual regions at a local level. However, existing methods usually adopt random masking and follow the same reconstruction paradigm to complete the masked regions, which do not leverage the correlations between cross-modal content. In this paper, we present Mask for Semantics Completion (MASCOT) based on semantic-based masked modeling. Specifically, after applying attention-based video masking to generate high-informed and low-informed masks, we propose Informed Semantics Completion to recover masked semantics information. The recovery mechanism is achieved by aligning the masked content with the unmasked visual regions and corresponding textual context, which makes the model capture more text-related details at a patch level. Additionally, we shift the emphasis of reconstruction from irrelevant backgrounds to discriminative parts to ignore regions with low-informed masks. Furthermore, we design dual-mask co-learning to incorporate video cues under different masks and learn more aligned video representation. Our MASCOT performs state-of-the-art performance on four major text-video retrieval benchmarks, including MSR-VTT, LSMDC, ActivityNet, and DiDeMo. Extensive ablation studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.
