Wakefield-Dressed Relativistic Vortex Electrons in Plasma Accelerators

Plasma wakefield acceleration is usually regarded as a classical mechanism for producing high- energy charged-particle beams. Here we show that an axisymmetric plasma wakefield can also act as a moving quantum structure that supports relativistic vortex electron states. Starting from the Dirac equation, we derive the electron spinor eigenstates with definite total angular momentum in an ideal bubble-regime wakefield. The transverse focusing field confines and quantizes the electron transverse motion into Laguerre-Gaussian vortex modes, while the longitudinal electric field acceler- ates the electron without destroying the symmetry-protected angular momenta. We further analyze the localized and off-axis vortex electron wave-packets, and non-ideal wakefield perturbations, and identify the conditions for preserving electron-vortex-state purity. These results suggest plasma wakefield as a route toward high-energy vortex electrons and extend plasma-based acceleration from classical beam dynamics to quantum-state control of relativistic particles.

Super light-by-light scattering in vacuum induced by intense vortex lasers

Collision of ultra-intense optical laser and X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) pulses is a promising approach to detecting nonlinear vacuum polarization (VP), a long-standing prediction of quantum electrodynamics remaining to be tested. Identifying the signals induced by polarized vacuum relies on purifying the X-ray polarization and poses significant challenges due to strongly reduced signal and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here we propose an approach that allows one to directly detect VP signals without the need for an X-ray polarizer. We identify a new VP effect in collision of an X-ray probe with an intense laser in a vortex mode, which we call the super light-by-light scattering (super-LBL), through which signal photons are kicked out of the X-ray background with large tangential momentum. Super-LBL originates from the gradient force of the vortical vacuum current in azimuthal direction and induces momentum exchange beyond the transverse momentum of laser-photon. This effect efficiently sets the scattered signal photons apart from the X-ray background, producing observable signals with both the strength and SNR more than two orders of magnitude higher than those from the known VP effects. This finding paves the way for single-shot detection of nonlinear VP phenomena with current ultra-intense laser and XFEL technologies.

Generation of Quantum Vortex Electrons with Intense Laser Pulses

Accelerating a free electron to high energy forms the basis for studying particle and nuclear physics. Here it is shown that wavefunction of such an energetic electron can be further manipulated with femtosecond intense lasers. During the scattering between a high-energy electron and a strong laser pulse, we find a regime where the enormous photon spin angular momenta can be efficiently transferred to the electron orbital angular momentum (OAM). The wavefunction of the scattered electron is twisted from its initial plane-wave state to quantum vortex state. Nonlinear quantum electrodynamics (QED) theory suggests that GeV-level electrons acquire average intrinsic OAM beyond 100 h-barat laser intensities of 10^20W/cm^2 with linear scaling. These electrons emit gamma photons with double-peaked spectrum, which sets them apart from ordinary electrons. The findings demonstrate a proficient method for generating relativistic leptons with quantum vortex wavefunctions based on existing laser technology, thereby fostering a novel source for particle and nuclear physics.

Transfer of spin to orbital angular momentum in the Bethe-Heitler process

According to the conservation of angular momentum, when a plane-wave polarized photon splits into a pair of electron-positron under the influence of the Coulomb field, the spin angular momentum (SAM) of the photon is converted into the angular momentum of the leptons. We investigate this process (the Bethe-Heitler process) by describing the final electron and positron with twisted states and find that the SAM of the incident photon is not only converted into SAM of the produced pair, but also into their orbital angular momentum (OAM), which has not been considered previously. The average OAM gained by the leptons surpasses the average SAM, while their orientations coincide. Both properties depend on the energy and open angle of the emitted leptons. The demonstrated spin-orbit transfer shown in the Bethe-Heitler process may exist in a large group of QED scattering processes.

Axionlike-particle generation by laser-plasma interaction

The hypothetical axion and axion-like particles, feebly coupled with photon, have not yet been found in any experiment. With the improvement of laser technique, much stronger but shorter quasi-static electric and magnetic fields can be created in laboratory using laser-plasma interaction, compared to the fields of large magnets, to help the search of axion. In this article, we discuss the feasibility of ALPs exploration using planarly or cylindrically symmetric laser-plasma fields as background and an x-ray free-electron laser as probe. Both the probe and the background fields are polarized such that the existence of ALPs in the corresponding parameter space will cause polarization rotation of the probe, which can be detected with high accuracy. Besides, a structured field in the plasma creates a tunable transverse profile for the interaction and improves the signal-to-noise ratio via phase-matching mechanism. The ALP mass discussed in this article ranges from $10^{-3}$ eV to 1 keV. Some simple schemes and estimations on ALP production and polarization rotation of probe photon are given, which reveals the possibility of future laser-plasma ALP source in laboratory.

Generation of relativistic positrons carrying intrinsic orbital angular momentum

High energy positrons can be efficiently created through high-energy photons splitting into electron-positron pairs under the influence of the Coulomb field. Here we show that a new degree of freedom-the intrinsic orbital angular momentum (OAM) can be introduced into relativistic positrons when the incident photons are twisted. We developed the full-twisted scattering theory to describe the transfer of angular momentum before and after the interaction. It is found that the total angular momentum (TAM) of the photon is equally distributed among the positron and electron. For each photon TAM value, the generated leptons gain higher average OAM number when the photon spin is anti-parallel to its TAM. The impact of photon polarization on the OAM spectrum profile and the scattering probability is more significant at small photon TAM numbers, owing to the various interaction channels influenced by flipping the photon spin. Our work provides the theoretical basis to study OAM physics in particle scattering and to obtain copious relativistic vortex positrons through the Beth-Heitler process.

Vortex Breit-Wheeler Electron-positron pair creation via vortex gamma-photons

Particles in quantum vortex states (QVS) carrying definite orbital angular momenta (OAM) brings new perspectives in various fundamental interaction processes. When unique properties arise in the QVS, understanding how OAM manifest itself between initial particles and the outcome in vortex particle collisions becomes essential. This is made possible by applying the complete vortex description for all involved particles such that angular momenta (AM) are represented by explicit quantum numbers and their connections are naturally retrieved. We demonstrate the full-vortex quantum-electrodynamics (QED) results for the Breit-Wheeler pair creation process and derive the AM-dependent selection rule. The numerically resolved cross-sections show anti-symmetric spin polarization and most importantly, the first OAM spectra in vortex collision processes. The latter reveals efficient conversion of OAM to created pairs, leading to featured hollow and ring-shaped structure in the density distribution. These results demonstrate a clear picture in understanding the OAM physics in the scattering processes of high energy particles.

Unruh effect and angular momentum correlation of Rindler particles

It is well known that the rotational motion does not induce Unruh effect, because the Minkowski vacuum coincides with the vacuum state defined by the pure rotating observers. However, are there Rindler particles carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), and do they produce observable effect? To answer these questions, we need an accelerated observer having a vortex structure in the transverse dimensions and carrying well-defined OAM. Here we consider the angular momentum characteristics of Unruh effect in the theory of scalar field and electromagnetic field for the first time. We find that the rotation and vortex structure of a uniformly accelerated observer lead to the definite angular momentum correlation between Rindler particles and their counterparts in Minkowski vacuum. When interacting with the Unruh thermal bath, the accelerated vortex observer carrying the OAM of l can absorb and emit Rindler particles with the same OAM, and the particle energy is determined by the angular velocity of the rotation. The absorption rate is not equal to the emission rate in general. Both the absorption and emission processes in the thermal bath are correlated with the emission process of particles with OAM of +l or -1 in Minkowski vacuum. This effect may promote a potential scheme to detect the Unruh effect. The OAM provides a potential approach to filter out the background noise so that the signal particles could be extracted sufficiently.

Spin-to-Orbital Conversion of Angular Momentum in Harmonic Generation Driven by Intense Circularly Polarized Beam

A new physical mechanism to achieve spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion based on the interaction of an intense circularly polarized (CP) laser beam with a plane foil is presented and studied for the first time. It has been verified by both simulation and theoretical analysis that vortex harmonics carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are generated after a relativistic CP laser beam, even a Gaussian beam, impinges normally on a plane foil. The generation of this vortex harmonics is attributed to the vortex oscillation of the plasma surface driven harmonically by the vortex longitudinal electric field of the CP beam. During the process of harmonic generation, the spin angular momenta of fundamental-frequency photons are converted to OAM of harmonic photon because of the conservation of total angular momentum. In addition, if an initially vortex beam or a spiral phase plate is used, the OAM of harmonic photon can be more tunable and controllable.

Nonlinear theory of intense laser-plasma interactions modified by vacuum-polarization effects

The classical nonlinear laser-plasma interaction theory is corrected. Given the effects of vacuum polarization (induced by extreme laser) as nonlinear media response, one-dimensional wave equations of a monochromatic laser field are derived from the Heisenberg-Euler Lagrangian density and a derivative correction with the first order quantum electrodynamic (QED) effects. A more suitable model to formulate the interactions of extreme laser and high-energy-density plasma is developed. In the results, the enhanced effect of vacuum polarization will be discussed and shown.

Modified surface redshift of pulsars and magnetars by magnetized plasmas and vacuum polarization

The propagation of emissions in the relativistic streaming pair plasmas of pulsars and magnetars is studied within the framework of Gordon effective metric theory, and the effect of vacuum polarization on the radiation spectra is examined particularly. It is found that the electromagnetic and kinetic effects of streaming magnetized plasmas and the vacuum polarization effect can shift the radiation spectra of stars. The modification of redshifts of spectra can reach the same magnitude as the gravitational redshift in particular cases. Moreover, the redshifts induced by the media are anisotropic and associated with wave modes. For the O-mode, the modification of redshifts is dependent on the frequency of the radiation. For lower-frequency radiation, the modification is dominated by the plasma effect, while for higher-frequency radiations, by the vacuum polarization effect. For the X-mode, the modification is non-dispersive and dominated by the vacuum polarization effect. The vacuum polarization also has a significant effect on the redshifts of X-ray emissions in magnetars.

The spin-orbit interaction and the spin-spin interaction of photons in an inhomogeneous medium

By means of the optical metric, we investigate the propagation of a polarized light in an inhomogeneous medium in this paper. We find that the evolution of photons is affected by the spin-spin interaction of photons, besides the spin-orbit interaction. Due to the spin-spin interaction, there is a small deflection of the ray trajectory of the polarized light along the direction of the inhomogeneity gradient of the medium. It is different from the transverse deflection described by the spin Hall effect of photons.

Dynamical Evolution of Photons in Plasma Waves

On the viewpoint of corpuscular model an electromagnetic radiation can be regarded as a system composed of photons with different energies and momenta, which provides us a method being different from the Maxwell wave theory to describe the interaction of electromagnetic waves with plasmas. In this paper the evolution behavior of a single photon and the collective effect of a photon system in plasma waves are uniformly described in the frame of photon dynamics. In a small-amplitude plasma wave the modulation of photon dynamical behavior by the plasma wave can be treated as perturbation, and the photon acceleration effect and photon Landau damping are investigated in the linear theory. In a plasma wave with arbitrary amplitude the photon evolution trajectories in phase space and coordinate space are obtained by solving the dynamical equations, and the trapping condition and possibility of photons in the given plasma wave are also discussed.
