Pressure-Induced Anomalous Phase Transitions and Colossal Enhancement of Piezoelectricity in PbTiO$_3$

We find an unexpected tetragonal-to-monoclinic-to-rhombohedral-to-cubic phase transition sequence induced by pressure, and a morphotropic phase boundary in a pure compound using first-principles calculations. Huge dielectric and piezoelectric coupling constants occur in the transition regions, comparable to those observed in the new complex single-crystal solid-solution piezoelectrics such as Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$-PbTiO$_{3}$, which are expected to revolutionize electromechanical applications. Our results show that morphotropic phase boundaries and giant piezoelectric effects do not require intrinsic disorder, and open the possibility of studying this effect in simple systems.

Ab initio linear response and frozen phonons for the relaxor PMN (PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3)

We report first principles density functional studies using plane wave basis sets and pseudopotentials and all electron linear augmented plane wave (LAPW) of the relative stability of various ferroelectric and antiferroelectric supercells of PMN for 1:2 chemical ordering along [111] and [001]. We used linear response with density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) as implemented in the code ABINIT to compute the Born effective charges, electronic dielectric tensors, long wavelength phonon frequencies and LO-TO splittings. The polar response is different for supercells ordered along [111] and [001]. Several polar phonon modes show significant coupling with the macroscopic electric field giving giant LO-TO splittings. For [111] ordering, a polar transverse optic (TO) mode with E symmetry is found to be unstable in the ferroelectric P3m1 structure and the ground state is found to be triclinic. Multiple phonon instabilities of polar modes and their mode couplings provide the pathway for polarization rotation. The Born effective charges in PMN are highly anisotropic and this anisotropy contributes to the observed huge electromechanical coupling in PMN solid solutions.

Trends in Elasticity and Electronic Structure of Transition-Metal Nitrides and Carbides from First Principles

The elastic properties of the $B_1$-structured transition-metal nitrides and their carbide counterparts are studied using the {\it ab initio\} density functional perturbation theory. The linear response results of elastic constants are in excellent agreement with those obtained from numerical derivative methods, and are also consistent with measured data. We find the following trends: (1) Bulk moduli $B$ and tetragonal shear moduli $G^{\prime}=(C_{11}-C_{12})/2$, increase and lattice constants $a_{0}$ decrease rightward or downward on the Periodic Table for the metal component or if C is replaced by N; (2) The inequality $B > G^{\prime} > G > 0$ holds for $G=C_{44}$; (3) $G$ depends strongly on the number of valence electrons per unit cell ($Z_{V}$). From the fitted curve of $G$ as a function of $Z_{V}$, we can predict that MoN is unstable in $B_{1}$ structure, and transition-metal carbonitrides ($e.g.$ ZrC$_{x}$N$_{1-x}$) and di-transition-metal carbides ($e.g.$ Hf$_{x}$Ta$_{1-x}$C) have maximum $G$ at $Z_{V} \approx 8.3$.

Comparing the Weighted Density Approximation with the LDA and GGA for Ground State Properties of Ferroelectric Perovskites

First-principles calculations within the weighted density approximation (WDA) were performed for ground state properties of ferroelectric perovskites PbTiO$_3$, BaTiO$_3$, SrTiO$_3$, KNbO$_3$ and KTaO$_3$. We used the plane-wave pseudopotential method, a pair distribution function $G$ based on the uniform electron gas, and shell partitioning. Comparing with the local density approximation (LDA) and the general gradient approximation (GGA), we found that the WDA significantly improves the equilibrium volume of these materials in cubic symmetry over both the LDA and GGA; Ferroelectric instabilities calculated by the WDA agree with the LDA and GGA very well; At the experimental ferroelectric lattice, optimized atom positions by the WDA are in good agreement with measured data; However the WDA overestimates the strain of tetragonal PbTiO$_3$ at experimental volume; The WDA overestimates the volume of fully relaxed structures, but the GGA results are even worse. Some calculations were also done with other models for $G$. It is found that a $G$ with longer range behavior yields improved relaxed structures. Possible avenues for improving the WDA are discussed.

Weighted Density Approximation Description of Insulating YH$_3$ and LaH$_3$

Density functional calculations within the weighted density approximation (WDA) are presented for YH$_3$ and LaH$_3$. We investigate some commonly used pair-distribution functions G. These calculations show that within a consistent density functional framework a substantial insulating gap can be obtained while at the same time retaining structural properties in accord with experimental data. Our WDA band structures agree with those of $GW$ approximation very well, but the calculated band gaps are still 1.0-2.0 eV smaller than experimental findings.

Charge transfer electrostatic model of compositional order in perovskite alloys

We introduce an electrostatic model including charge transfer, which is shown to account for the observed B-site ordering in Pb-based perovskite alloys. The model allows charge transfer between A-sites and is a generalization of Bellaiche and Vanderbilt's purely electrostatic model. The large covalency of Pb^{2+} compared to Ba^{2+} is modeled by an environment dependent effective A-site charge. Monte Carlo simulations of this model successfully reproduce the long range compositional order of both Pb-based and Ba-based complex A(BB^{'}B^{''})O_3 perovskite alloys. The models are also extended to study systems with A-site and B-site doping, such as (Na_{1/2}La_{1/2})(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3, (Ba_{1-x}La_{x})(Mg_{(1+x)/3}Nb_{(2-x)/3})O_3 and (Pb_{1-x}La_{x})(Mg_{(1+x)/3}Ta_{(2-x)/3})O_3. General trends are reproduced by purely electrostatic interactions, and charge transfer effects indicate that local structural relaxations can tip the balance between different B-site orderings in Pb based materials.
