Shot-Aware Frame Sampling for Video Understanding

Video frame sampling is essential for efficient long-video understanding with Vision-Language Models (VLMs), since dense inputs are costly and often exceed context limits. Yet when only a small number of frames can be retained, existing samplers often fail to balance broad video coverage with brief but critical events, which can lead to unreliable downstream predictions. To address this issue, we present InfoShot, a task-agnostic, shot-aware frame sampler for long-video understanding. InfoShot first partitions a video into semantically consistent shots, and then selects two complementary keyframes from each shot: one to represent the main content and one to capture unusual within-shot changes. This design is guided by an information-theoretic objective that encourages the sampled set to retain high information about both shot structure and sparse within-shot deviations. In this way, it improves the chance of preserving both overall video context and short decision-critical moments without requiring any retraining. To better evaluate such short-lived events, we further introduce SynFlash, a synthetic benchmark with controllable sub-second anomaly patterns and frame-level ground truth, and we also evaluate InfoShot on existing anomaly datasets and general video understanding tasks. Experiments show that InfoShot improves anomaly hit rate and downstream Video-QA accuracy under frame number constraints, while matching or outperforming strong baselines on standard video understanding benchmarks.

Scaling anisotropy with stationary background field in the near-Sun solar wind turbulence

The scaling of magnetic fluctuations provides crucial information for the understanding of solar wind turbulence. However, the observed magnetic fluctuations contain not only turbulence but also magnetic structures, leading to the violation of the time stationarity. This violation would conceal the true scaling and influence the determination of the sampling angle with respect to the local background magnetic field. Here, to investigate the scaling anisotropy, we utilize an easy but effective criterion $ϕ<10^\circ$ to ensure the time stationarity of the magnetic field, where $ϕ$ is the angle between the two averaged magnetic fields after cutting the interval into two halves. We study the scaling anisotropy using higher-order statistics of structure functions under the condition of stationarity for the near-Sun solar wind turbulence for the first time based on measurements obtained from Parker Solar Probe (PSP) at 0.17 au. We find that the scaling indices $ξ$ of magnetic field show a linear dependence on the order $p$ close to $ξ(p)=p/4$. The multifractal scaling of magnetic-trace structure functions becomes monoscaling close to $ξ(p)=p/3$ with the local magnetic field perpendicular to the sampling direction and close to $ξ(p)=p/4$ with the local magnetic field parallel to the sampling direction when measured with the stationary background magnetic field. The scaling of velocity-trace structure functions has similar but less significant changes. The near-Sun solar wind turbulence displays different scaling anisotropies with the near-Earth solar wind turbulence, suggesting the evolution of the nonlinear interaction process during the solar wind expansion.

On the scaling and anisotropy of two subranges in the inertial range of solar wind turbulence

Intermittency and anisotropy are two important aspects of plasma turbulence, which the solar wind provides a natural laboratory to investigate. However, their forms and nature are still under debate, making it difficult to achieve a consensus in the theoretical interpretation. Here, we perform higher-order statistics for the observations in the fast solar wind at 1.48 au obtained by Ulysses and in the slow solar wind at 0.17 au obtained by Parker Solar Probe (PSP). We find that two subranges clearly exist in the inertial range and they present distinct features with regard to the intermittency and anisotropy. The subrange 1 with smaller scale has a multifractal scaling with the second index $ξ(2) \sim 2/3$ and the subrange 2 with larger scale is also multifractal but with $ξ(2) \sim 1/2$. The break between two subranges locates at the same spatial scale for both Ulysses and PSP observations. Subrange 1 is multifractal in the direction perpendicular to the local magnetic field with $ξ_{\perp}(2) \sim 2/3$ and seems to be monoscaling in the parallel direction with $ξ_{\parallel}(2) \sim 1$. Subrange 2 is multifractal in both parallel and perpendicular directions with $ξ_{\perp}(2) \sim 1/2$ and $ξ_{\parallel}(2) \sim 2/3$. Both subrange 1 and subrange 2 present power and wavevector anisotropies. The distinct features of two subranges suggest that a transition from weak to strong turbulence may occur and the spatial scale of the break may not evolve with the solar wind expansion. These new results update our knowledge of the inertial range and provide strong observational constraints on the understanding of intermittency and anisotropy in solar wind turbulence.
