Propagation dynamics on the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattices

The spatiotemporal propagation of a momentum excitation on the finite Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattices is investigated. The competition between the solitary wave and phonons gives rise to interesting propagation behaviors. For a moderate nonlinearity, the initially excited pulse may propagate coherently along the lattice for a long time in a solitary wave manner accompanied by phonon tails. The lifetime of the long-transient propagation state exhibits a sensitivity to the nonlinear parameter. The solitary wave decays exponentially during the final loss of stability, and the decay rate varying with the nonlinear parameter exhibits two different scaling laws. This decay is found to be related to the largest Lyapunov exponent of the corresponding Hamiltonian system, which manifests a transition from weak to strong chaos. The mean-free-path of the solitary waves is estimated in the strong chaos regime, which may be helpful to understand the origin of anomalous conductivity in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattice.

Dynamic Quantum Tunneling in Mesoscopic Driven Duffing Oscillators

We investigate the dynamic quantum tunneling between two attractors of a mesoscopic driven Duffing oscillator. We find that, in addition to inducing remarkable quantum shift of the bifurcation point, the mesoscopic nature also results in a perfect linear scaling behavior for the tunneling rate with the driving distance to the shifted bifurcation point.

Quantum Dynamics of Mesoscopic Driven Duffing Oscillators

We investigate the nonlinear dynamics of a mesoscopic driven Duffing oscillator in a quantum regime. In terms of Wigner function, we identify the nature of state near the bifurcation point, and analyze the transient process which reveals two distinct stages of quenching and escape. The rate process in the escape stage allows us to extract the transition rate, which displays perfect scaling behavior with the driving distance to the bifurcation point. We numerically determine the scaling exponent, compare it with existing result, and propose open questions to be resolved.

Transitions To the Long-Resident State in coupled chaotic oscillators

The behaviors of coupled chaotic oscillators before complete synchronization were investigated. We report three phenomena: (1) The emergence of long-time residence of trajectories besides one of the saddle foci; (2) The tendency that orbits of the two oscillators get close becomes faster with increasing the coupling strength; (3) The diffusion of two oscillator's phase difference is first enhanced and then suppressed. There are exact correspondences among these phenomena. The mechanism of these correspondences is explored. These phenomena uncover the route to synchronization of coupled chaotic oscillators.

Partial Synchronization on Complex Networks

Network topology plays an important role in governing the collective dynamics. Partial synchronization (PaS) on regular networks with a few non-local links is explored. Different PaS patterns out of the symmetry breaking are observed for different ways of non-local couplings. The criterion for the emergence of PaS is studied. The emergence of PaS is related to the loss of degeneration in Lyapunov exponent spectrum. Theoretical and numerical analysis indicate that non-local coupling may drastically change the dynamical feature of the network, emphasizing the important topological dependence of collective dynamics on complex networks.

Phase slips and phase synchronization of coupled oscillators

The behaviors of coupled oscillators, each of which has periodic motion with random natural frequency in the absence of coupling, are investigated. Some novel collective phenomena are revealed. At the onset of instability of the phase-locking state, simultaneous phase slips of all oscillators and quantized phase shifts in these phase slips are observed. By incresing the coupling, a bifurcation tree from high-dimensional quasiperiodicity to chaos to quasiperiodicity and periodicity is found. Different orders of phase synchronizations of chaotic oscillators and chaotic clusters play the key role for constructing this tree structure.

Array-induced collective transport in the Brownian motion of coupled nonlinear oscillator systems

Brownian motion of an array of harmonically coupled particles subject to a periodic substrate potential and driven by an external bias is investigated. In the linear response limit (small bias), the coupling between particles may enhance the diffusion process, depending on the competition between the harmonic chain and the substrate potential. An analytical formula of the diffusion rate for the single-particle case is also obtained. In the nonlinear response regime, the moving kink may become phase-locked to its radiated phonon waves, hence the mobility of the chain may decrease as one increases the external force.

Resonant steps and spatiotemporal dynamics in the damped dc-driven Frenkel-Kontorova chain

Kink dynamics of the damped Frenkel-Kontorova (discrete sine-Gordon) chain driven by a constant external force are investigated. Resonant steplike transitions of the average velocity occur due to the competitions between the moving kinks and their radiated phasonlike modes. A mean-field consideration is introduced to give a precise prediction of the resonant steps. Slip-stick motion and spatiotemporal dynamics on those resonant steps are discussed. Our results can be applied to studies of the fluxon dynamics of 1D Josephson-junction arrays and ladders, dislocations, tribology and other fields.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of discrete sine-Gordon lattices with sinusoidal couplings

The spatiotemporal dynamics of a damped sine-Gordon chain with sinusoidal nearest-neighbor couplings driven by a constant uniform force are discussed. The velocity characteristics of the chain versus the external force is shown. Dynamics in the high- and low-velocity regimes are investigated. It is found that in the high-velocity regime, the dynamics is dominated by rotating modes, the velocity shows a branching bifurcation feature, while in the low-velocity regime, the velocity exhibits step-like dynamical transitions, broken by the destruction of strong resonances.
