Pinching-Antenna Systems (PASS): A Tutorial

Pinching antenna systems (PASS) present a breakthrough among the flexible-antenna technologies, and distinguish themselves by facilitating large-scale antenna reconfiguration, line-of-sight creation, scalable implementation, and near-field benefits, thus bringing wireless communications from the last mile to the last meter. A comprehensive tutorial is presented in this paper. First, the fundamentals of PASS are discussed, including PASS signal models, hardware models, power radiation models, and pinching antenna activation methods. Building upon this, the information-theoretic capacity limits achieved by PASS are characterized, and several typical performance metrics of PASS-based communications are analyzed to demonstrate its superiority over conventional antenna technologies. Next, the pinching beamforming design is investigated. The corresponding power scaling law is first characterized. For the joint transmit and pinching design in the general multiple-waveguide case, 1) a pair of transmission strategies is proposed for PASS-based single-user communications to validate the superiority of PASS, namely sub-connected and fully connected structures; and 2) three practical protocols are proposed for facilitating PASS-based multi-user communications, namely waveguide switching, waveguide division, and waveguide multiplexing. A possible implementation of PASS in wideband communications is further highlighted. Moreover, the channel state information acquisition in PASS is elaborated with a pair of promising solutions. To overcome the high complexity and suboptimality inherent in conventional convex-optimization-based approaches, machine-learning-based methods for operating PASS are also explored, focusing on selected deep neural network architectures and training algorithms. Finally, several promising applications of PASS in next-generation wireless networks are highlighted.

Pinching Antennas in Blockage-Aware Environments: Modeling, Design, and Optimization

Pinching-antenna (PA) systems have recently emerged as a promising member of the flexible-antenna family due to their ability to dynamically establish line-of-sight (LoS) links. While most existing studies assume ideal environments without obstacles, practical indoor deployments are often obstacle-rich, where LoS blockage significantly degrades performance. This paper investigates pinching-antenna systems in blockage-aware environments by developing a deterministic model for cylinder-shaped obstacles that precisely characterizes LoS conditions without relying on stochastic approximations. Based on this model, a special case is first studied where each PA serves a single user and can only be deployed at discrete positions along the waveguide. In this case, the waveguide-user assignment is obtained via the Hungarian algorithm, and PA positions are refined using a surrogate-assisted block-coordinate search. Then, a general case is considered where each PA serves all users and can be continuously placed along the waveguide. In this case, beamforming and PA positions are jointly optimized by a weighted minimum mean square error integrated deep deterministic policy gradient (WMMSE-DDPG) approach to address non-smooth LoS transitions. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms significantly improve system throughput and LoS connectivity compared with benchmark methods. Moreover, the results reveal that pinching-antenna systems can effectively leverage obstacles to suppress co-channel interference, converting potential blockages into performance gains.

Robust Energy-Efficient Sleep-Mode Strategy for Multi-RIS-Aided Cell-Free Massive MIMO

With the explosive growth of data traffic and the ubiquitous connectivity of wireless devices, the energy demands of wireless networks have inevitably escalated. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a promising solution for 6G networks due to its energy efficiency (EE) and low cost, while cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) was proposed as an innovative network architecture without fixed cell boundaries to enhance these measures even further. However, existing studies often assume consistently high traffic loads, neglecting the dynamic nature of user demand. This can result in underutilized access points (APs) and unnecessary energy expenditure during low-demand periods. To tackle the challenge of EE in CF-mMIMO systems during low load periods, this paper proposes a novel energy-efficient transmission scheme that jointly coordinates active APs and multiple passive RISs. Specifically, a dynamic AP sleep-mode strategy is designed, where certain APs are selectively deactivated while nearby RISs assist in maintaining coverage. We formulate the EE maximization objective as a fractional programming problem and adopt the Dinkelbach method in conjunction with alternating optimization (AO) to iteratively solve the three coupled subproblems: (i) AP selection via a hybrid branch-and-bound (BnB) and greedy algorithm, (ii) transmit power optimization using a sequential convex approximation (SCA) method, initialized by a heuristic zero-forcing strategy, and (iii) RIS phase shift optimization using gradient projection. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves significantly higher EE than existing methods in both low and moderate user scenarios.

Segmented Waveguide-Enabled Pinching-Antenna Systems (SWANs) for ISAC

A segmented waveguide-enabled pinching-antenna system (SWAN)-assisted integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) framework is proposed. Unlike conventional pinching antenna systems (PASS), which use a single long waveguide, SWAN divides the waveguide into multiple short segments, each with a dedicated feed point. Thanks to the segmented structure, SWAN enhances sensing performance by significantly simplifying the reception model and reducing the in-waveguide propagation loss. To balance performance and complexity, three segment controlling protocols are proposed for the transceivers, namely i) \emph{segment selection} to select a single segment for signal transceiving, ii) \emph{segment aggregation} to aggregate signals from all segments using a single RF chain, and iii) \emph{segment multiplexing} to jointly process the signals from all segments using individual RF chains. The theoretical sensing performance limit is first analyzed for different protocols, unveiling how the sensing performance gain of SWAN scales with the number of segments. Based on this performance limit, the Pareto fronts of sensing and communication performance are characterized for the simple one-user one-target case, which is then extended to the general multi-user single-target case based on time-division multiple access (TDMA). Numerical results are presented to verify the correctness of the derivations and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms, which jointly confirm the advantages of SWAN-assisted ISAC.

Pinching-Antenna System Design under Random LoS and NLoS Channels

Pinching antennas, realized through position-adjustable radiating elements along dielectric waveguides, have emerged as a promising flexible-antenna technology thanks to their ability to dynamically reshape large-scale channel conditions. However, most existing studies focus on idealized LoS-dominated environments, overlooking the stochastic nature of realistic wireless propagation. This paper investigates a more practical multiuser pinching-antenna system under a composite probabilistic channel model that captures distance-dependent LoS blockage and NLoS scattering. To account for both efficiency and reliability aspects of communication, two complementary design metrics are considered: an average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) metric characterizing long-term throughput and fairness, and an outage-constrained metric ensuring a prescribed reliability level. Based on these metrics, we formulate two optimization problems: the first maximizes the max-min average SNR across users, while the second maximizes a guaranteed SNR threshold under per-user outage constraints. Although both problems are inherently nonconvex, we exploit their underlying monotonic structures and develop low-complexity, bisection-based algorithms that achieve globally optimal solutions using only simple scalar evaluations. Extensive simulations validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods and demonstrate that pinching-antenna systems significantly outperform conventional fixed-antenna designs even under random LoS and NLoS channels.

NOMA Assisted Downlink Power Allocation in Pinching Antenna Systems Using Convolutional Neural Network

In this paper, we consider a flexible-antenna architecture, referred to as a pinching-antenna (PA) system, in which multiple PAs realized by activating small dielectric particles along a dielectric waveguide are jointly employed to serve a single-antenna user. We investigate antenna placement and power allocation optimization in PA-assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems using a convolutional neural network (CNN). An optimization strategy is developed to determine the PA locations that maximize achievable NOMA performance while satisfying physical and spatial constraints. The proposed method adopts a two-stage structure, combining a user-aware initialization with a gradient-based refinement, enabling near-optimal performance with significantly lower computational cost. A max-min fairness formulation is introduced for power allocation to balance the power budget among users with varying channel strengths, solved efficiently via quasi-linear programming and bisection search. Finally, a CNN-based learning framework is employed to capture the nonlinear mapping between channel conditions and the corresponding optimal power coefficients. This framework can infer near-optimal power allocations for unseen network configurations without retraining, offering scalability and adaptability. Simulation results show that the proposed CNN-based NOMA approach for PA systems improves sum rate and user fairness while reducing computational complexity.

Environment Division Multiple Access (EDMA): A Feasibility Study via Pinching Antennas

This paper exploits the dynamic features of wireless propagation environments as the basis for a new multiple access technique, termed environment division multiple access (EDMA). In particular, with the proposed pinching-antenna-assisted EDMA, the multi-user propagation environment is intelligently reconfigured to improve signal strength at intended receivers and simultaneously suppress multiple-access interference, without requiring complex signal processing, e.g., precoding, beamforming, or multi-user detection. The key to creating a favorable propagation environment is to utilize the capability of pinching antennas to reconfigure line-of-sight (LoS) links, e.g., pinching antennas are placed at specific locations, such that interference links are blocked on purpose. Based on a straightforward choice of pinching-antenna locations, the ergodic sum-rate gain of EDMA over conventional multiple access and the probability that EDMA achieves a larger instantaneous sum rate than the considered benchmarking scheme are derived in closed form. The obtained analytical results demonstrate the significant potential of EDMA for supporting multi-user communications. Furthermore, pinching antenna location optimization is also investigated, since the locations of pinching antennas are critical for reconfiguring LoS links and large-scale path losses. Two low-complexity algorithms are developed for uplink and downlink transmission, respectively, and simulation results are provided to show their optimality in comparison to exhaustive searches.

Pinching Antennas Meet AI in Next-Generation Wireless Networks

Next-generation (NG) wireless networks must embrace innate intelligence in support of demanding emerging applications, such as extended reality and autonomous systems, under ultra-reliable and low-latency requirements. Pinching antennas (PAs), a new flexible low-cost technology, can create line-of-sight links by dynamically activating small dielectric pinches along a waveguide on demand. As a compelling complement, artificial intelligence (AI) offers the intelligence needed to manage the complex control of PA activation positions and resource allocation in these dynamic environments. This article explores the "win-win" cooperation between AI and PAs: AI facilitates the adaptive optimization of PA activation positions along the waveguide, while PAs support edge AI tasks such as federated learning and over-the-air aggregation. We also discuss promising research directions including large language model-driven PA control frameworks, and how PA-AI integration can advance semantic communications, and integrated sensing and communication. This synergy paves the way for adaptive, resilient, and self-optimizing NG networks.

Pinching-antenna-enabled Federated Learning: Tail Latency, Participation, and Convergence Analysis

Federated learning (FL) in wireless networks is limited by straggler delays from unpredictable channel conditions. In this paper, we investigate the pinching-antenna system (PASS), which dynamically 'pinches' the radiator along a dielectric waveguide to shorten the worst links. In synchronous FL (SFL), we prove that PASS shortens the worst-link distance, and it increases the on-time completion probability in asynchronous FL (AFL). Accordingly, SFL exhibits stochastic dominance on round time, while AFL yields explicit latency and participation gains. We then pair physical-layer (PHY)-aware sampling with error-feedback compression and prove that pinching raises the minimum inclusion probability, thus shrinking both the sampling variability and compression-induced floors in a Lyapunov analysis. Simulations demonstrate consistent wall clock speedups and markedly shorter latency tails. By addressing stragglers at their PHY root, PASS complements higher-layer scheduling and accelerates wireless FL in both SFL and AFL.

Wireless-Fed Pinching-Antenna Systems (Wi-PASS) for NextG Wireless Networks

Waveguide-based pinching-antenna systems (PASS) have recently emerged as a promising solution to mitigate severe propagation losses in millimeter-wave and terahertz bands by intelligently and flexibly establishing line-of-sight links. However, their reliance on wire-based feeding confines deployment to areas near the base station (BS), limiting installation flexibility and making them cost-ineffective for serving distant users or regions. To overcome this challenge, this article proposes wireless-fed pinchingantenna systems (Wi-PASS), which employ wireless feeding to energize waveguides. Wi-PASS offer a practical and cost-efficient means to extend coverage beyond the BS vicinity. Several indoor and outdoor use cases demonstrate Wi-PASS advantages over PASS. Numerical results further show that Wi-PASS deliver higher data rates than conventional fixed-antenna systems, confirming the superior feasibility and performance of Wi-PASS. Key future research directions are also discussed to advance Wi-PASS deployment.

Sum Rate Maximization for NOMA-Assisted Uplink Pinching-Antenna Systems

In this paper, we investigate an uplink communication scenario in which multiple users communicate with an access point (AP) employing non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). A pinching antenna, which can be activated at an arbitrary point along a dielectric waveguide, is deployed at the AP to dynamically reconfigure user channels. The objective is to maximize the system sum rate by jointly optimizing the pinching-antenna's position and the users' transmit powers. Two scenarios are considered: one without quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees, and the other with QoS guarantees. In the former case, users transmit at full power, and the antenna position is determined using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. In the latter, an alternating optimization approach is adopted, where a low-complexity solution is derived for power allocation, and a modified PSO algorithm is applied to optimize the antenna position. Numerical results show that the proposed pinching-antenna-assisted system significantly improves the sum rate compared to the conventional fixed-antenna architecture. Furthermore, the NOMA-based approach consistently outperforms its TDMA-based counterpart. Finally, the proposed PSO-based method achieves near-optimal performance, particularly when the QoS constraints are moderate.

Determination of all complete mappings of F_{q^2} of the form aX^{3q}+bX^{2q+1}+cX^{q+2}+dX^3

For each prime power q, we determine all polynomials over F_{q^2} of the form f(X) := aX^{3q}+bX^{2q+1}+cX^{q+2}+dX^3 which induce complete mappings of F_{q^2}, in the sense that each of the functions x --> f(x) and x --> f(x)+x permutes F_{q^2}. This is the first result in the literature which classifies the complete mappings among some class of polynomials with arbitrarily large degree over finite fields of arbitrary characteristic. We also determine all permutation polynomials over F_{q^2} of the form X^{q+2}+bX^q+cX, and all permutations of (F_q)^2 induced by maps of the form (x,y) --> (x^3-exy^2-ax-by, y^3-cx-dy) where either e=0 or 3|q. The latter results add to the small number of results in the literature classifying all permutations induced by maps of prescribed forms.

Pinching-Antenna Assisted Sensing: A Bayesian Cramér-Rao Bound Perspective

The fundamental sensing limit of pinching-antenna systems (PASS) is studied from a Bayesian Cramér-Rao bound (BCRB) perspective. Compared to conventional CRB, BCRB is independent of the exact values of sensing parameters and is not restricted by the unbiasedness of the estimator, thus offering a practical and comprehensive lower bound for evaluating sensing performance. A system where multiple targets transmit uplink pilots to a single-waveguide PASS under a time-division multiple access (TDMA) scheme is analyzed. For the single-target scenario, our analysis reveals a unique mismatch between the sensing centroid (i.e., the optimal PA position) and the distribution centroid (i.e., the center of the target's prior distribution), underscoring the necessity of dynamic PA repositioning. For the multi-target scenario, two target scheduling protocols are proposed: 1) pinch switching (PS), which performs separate pinching beamforming for each time slot, and 2) pinch multiplexing (PM), which applies a single beamforming configuration across all slots. Based on these protocols, both the total power minimization problem under a BCRB threshold and the min-max BCRB problem under a total power constraint are formulated. By leveraging Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions, these problems are equivalently converted into a search over PA positions and solved using an element-wise algorithm. Numerical results show that i)~PASS, endowed with large-scale reconfigurability, can significantly enhance the sensing performance compared with conventional fixed-position arrays, and ii)~PS provides more robust performances than PM at the cost of higher computational complexity.

A Stochastic Geometric Analysis on Multi-cell Pinching-antenna Systems under Blockage Effect

Recently, the study on pinching-antenna technique has attracted significant attention. However, most relevant literature focuses on a single-cell scenario, where the effect from the interfering pinching-antennas on waveguides connected to spatially distributed base stations (BSs) was ignored. To fulfill this knowledge gap, this letter aims to provide an analytical framework on performance evaluation for multi-cell pinching-antenna systems where spatially distributed waveguides which are connected to different BSs are considered. In particular, tools from stochastic geometry is applied for system modeling. The expression for the outage probability is obtained. Simulation results are provided to verify the accuracy of the analysis and demonstrate the superior performance of pinching-antenna system compared to fixed-antenna systems.

Analog Over-the-Air Federated Learning with Interference-Based Energy Harvesting

We consider analog over-the-air federated learning, where devices harvest energy from in-band and out-band radio frequency signals, with the former also causing co-channel interference (CCI). To mitigate the aggregation error, we propose an effective denoising policy that does not require channel state information (CSI). We also propose an adaptive scheduling algorithm that dynamically adjusts the number of local training epochs based on available energy, enhancing device participation and learning performance while reducing energy consumption. Simulation results and convergence analysis confirm the robust performance of the algorithm compared to conventional methods. It is shown that the performance of the proposed denoising method is comparable to that of conventional CSI-based methods. It is observed that high-power CCI severely degrades the learning performance, which can be mitigated by increasing the number of active devices, achievable via the adaptive algorithm.

Uplink and Downlink Communications in Segmented Waveguide-Enabled Pinching-Antenna Systems (SWANs)

A segmented waveguide-enabled pinching-antenna system (SWAN) is proposed, in which a segmented waveguide composed of multiple short dielectric waveguide segments is employed to radiate or receive signals through the pinching antennas (PAs) deployed on each segment. Based on this architecture, three practical operating protocols are proposed: segment selection (SS), segment aggregation (SA), and segment multiplexing (SM). For uplink SWAN communications, where one PA is activated per segment, the segmented structure eliminates the inter-antenna radiation effect, i.e., signals captured by one PA may re-radiate through other PAs along the same waveguide. This yields a tractable and physically consistent uplink signal model for a multi-PA pinching-antenna system (PASS), which has not been established for conventional PASS using a single long waveguide. Building on this model, PA placement algorithms are proposed to maximize the uplink signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Closed-form expressions for the received SNR under the three protocols are derived, and the corresponding scaling laws with respect to the number of segments are analyzed. It is proven that the segmented architecture reduces both the average PA-to-user distance and the PA-to-feed distance, thereby mitigating both large-scale path loss and in-waveguide propagation loss. These results are extended to downlink SWAN communications, where multiple PAs are activated per segment, and PA placement methods are proposed to maximize the downlink received SNR under the three protocols. Numerical results demonstrate that: \romannumeral1) among the three protocols, SM achieves the best performance, followed by SA and then SS; and \romannumeral2) for all protocols, the proposed SWAN achieves a higher SNR than conventional PASS with a single long waveguide in both uplink and downlink scenarios.

Pinching Antenna System (PASS) Enhanced Covert Communications: Against Warden via Sensing

A sensing-aided covert communication network empowered by pinching antenna systems (PASS) is proposed in this work. Unlike conventional fixed-position MIMO arrays, PASS dynamically reconfigures its pinching antennas (PAs) closer to the legitimate user, substantially enhancing covertness. To further secure the adversary's channel state information (CSI), a sensing function is leveraged to track the malicious warden's movements. In particular, this paper first proposes an extended Kalman filter (EKF) based approach to fulfilling the tracking function. Building on this, a covert communication problem is formulated with a joint design of beamforming, artificial noise (AN) signals, and the position of PAs. Then, the beamforming and AN design subproblems are resolved jointly with a subspace approach, while the PA position optimization subproblem is handled by a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach by treating the evolution of the warden's mobility status as a temporally corrected process. Numerical results are presented and demonstrate that: i) the EKF approach can accurately track the warden's CSI with low complexity, ii) the effectiveness of the proposed solution is verified by its outperformance over the greedy and searching-based benchmarks, and iii) with new design degrees of freedom (DoFs), the performance of PASS is superior to the conventional fully-digital MIMO systems.

QoS-Aware NOMA Design for Downlink Pinching-Antenna Systems

Pinching antennas, implemented by applying small dielectric particles on a waveguide, have emerged as a promising flexible-antenna technology ideal for next-generation wireless communications systems. Unlike conventional flexible-antenna systems, pinching antennas offer the advantage of creating line-of-sight links by enabling antennas to be activated on the waveguide at a location close to the user. This paper investigates a typical two-user non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) downlink scenario, where multiple pinching antennas are activated on a single dielectric waveguide to assist NOMA transmission. We formulate the problem of maximizing the data rate of one user subject to the quality-of-service requirement of the other user by jointly optimizing the antenna locations and power allocation coefficients. The formulated problem is nonconvex and difficult to solve due to the impact of antenna locations on large-scale path loss and two types of phase shifts, namely in-waveguide phase shifts and free space propagation phase shifts. To this end, we propose an iterative algorithm based on block coordinate descent and successive convex approximation techniques. Moreover, we consider the special case with a single pinching antenna, which is a simplified version of the multi-antenna case. Although the formulated problem is still nonconvex, by using the inherent features of the formulated problem, we derive the global optimal solution in closed-form, which offers important insights on the performance of pinching-antenna systems. Simulation results demonstrate that the pinching-antenna system significantly outperforms conventional fixed-position antenna systems, and the proposed algorithm achieves performance comparable to the computationally intensive exhaustive search based approach.
