RAGChecker: A Fine-grained Framework for Diagnosing Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Despite Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) showing promising capability in leveraging external knowledge, a comprehensive evaluation of RAG systems is still challenging due to the modular nature of RAG, evaluation of long-form responses and reliability of measurements. In this paper, we propose a fine-grained evaluation framework, RAGChecker, that incorporates a suite of diagnostic metrics for both the retrieval and generation modules. Meta evaluation verifies that RAGChecker has significantly better correlations with human judgments than other evaluation metrics. Using RAGChecker, we evaluate 8 RAG systems and conduct an in-depth analysis of their performance, revealing insightful patterns and trade-offs in the design choices of RAG architectures. The metrics of RAGChecker can guide researchers and practitioners in developing more effective RAG systems. This work has been open sourced at https://github.com/amazon-science/RAGChecker.

Measuring eye-tracking accuracy and its impact on usability in apple vision pro

With built-in eye-tracking cameras, the recently released Apple Vision Pro (AVP) mixed reality (MR) headset features gaze-based interaction, eye image rendering on external screens, and iris recognition for device unlocking. One of the technological advancements of the AVP is its heavy reliance on gaze- and gesture-based interaction. However, limited information is available regarding the technological specifications of the eye-tracking capability of the AVP, and raw gaze data is inaccessible to developers. This study evaluates the eye-tracking accuracy of the AVP with two sets of tests spanning both MR and virtual reality (VR) applications. This study also examines how eye-tracking accuracy relates to user-reported usability. The results revealed an overall eye-tracking accuracy of 1.11° and 0.93° in two testing setups, within a field of view (FOV) of approximately 34° x 18°. The usability and learnability scores of the AVP, measured using the standard System Usability Scale (SUS), were 75.24 and 68.26, respectively. Importantly, no statistically reliable correlation was found between eye-tracking accuracy and usability scores. These results suggest that eye-tracking accuracy is critical for gaze-based interaction, but it is not the sole determinant of user experience in VR/AR.

Quantitative Reducibility of $C^k$ Quasi-Periodic Cocycles

This paper establishes an extreme $C^k$ reducibility theorem of quasi-periodic $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ cocycles in the local perturbative region, revealing both the essence of Eliasson [Commun.Math.Phys.1992] and Hou-You [Invent.Math.2012] in respectively the non-resonant and resonant cases. By paralleling further the reducibility process with the almost reducibility, we are able to acquire the least initial regularity as well as the least loss of regularity for the whole KAM iterations. This, in return, makes various spectral applications of quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators wide open.

Towards a Holistic Evaluation of LLMs on Factual Knowledge Recall

Large language models (LLMs) have shown remarkable performance on a variety of NLP tasks, and are being rapidly adopted in a wide range of use cases. It is therefore of vital importance to holistically evaluate the factuality of their generated outputs, as hallucinations remain a challenging issue. In this work, we focus on assessing LLMs' ability to recall factual knowledge learned from pretraining, and the factors that affect this ability. To that end, we construct FACT-BENCH, a representative benchmark covering 20 domains, 134 property types, 3 answer types, and different knowledge popularity levels. We benchmark 31 models from 10 model families and provide a holistic assessment of their strengths and weaknesses. We observe that instruction-tuning hurts knowledge recall, as pretraining-only models consistently outperform their instruction-tuned counterparts, and positive effects of model scaling, as larger models outperform smaller ones for all model families. However, the best performance from GPT-4 still represents a large gap with the upper-bound. We additionally study the role of in-context exemplars using counterfactual demonstrations, which lead to significant degradation of factual knowledge recall for large models. By further decoupling model known and unknown knowledge, we find the degradation is attributed to exemplars that contradict a model's known knowledge, as well as the number of such exemplars. Lastly, we fine-tune LLaMA-7B in different settings of known and unknown knowledge. In particular, fine-tuning on a model's known knowledge is beneficial, and consistently outperforms fine-tuning on unknown and mixed knowledge. We will make our benchmark publicly available.

Miscibility of Binary Bose-Einstein Condensates with $p$-wave Interaction

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with competing interspecies $s$- and $p$-wave interactions. Exploiting a pseudopotential model for the $l=1$ partial wave, we derive an extended Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation for the BEC mixture that incorporates both $s$- and $p$-wave interactions. Based on it, we study the miscible-immiscible transition of a binary BEC mixture in the presence of interspecies $p$-wave interaction, by combining numerical solution of the GP equation and Gaussian variational analysis. Our study uncovers a dual effect -- either enhance or reduce miscibility -- of positive interspecies $p$-wave interaction, which can be precisely controlled by adjusting relevant experimental parameters. By complete characterizing the miscibility phase diagram, we establish a promising avenue towards experimental control of the miscibility of binary BEC mixtures via high partial-wave interactions.

Efficient Global Algorithms for Transmit Beamforming Design in ISAC Systems

In this paper, we propose a multi-input multi-output transmit beamforming optimization model for joint radar sensing and multi-user communications, where the design of the beamformers is formulated as an optimization problem whose objective is a weighted combination of the sum rate and the Cramér-Rao bound, subject to the transmit power budget. Obtaining the global solution for the formulated nonconvex problem is a challenging task, since the sum-rate maximization problem itself (even without considering the sensing metric) is known to be NP-hard. The main contributions of this paper are threefold. Firstly, we derive an optimal closed-form solution to the formulated problem in the single-user case and the multi-user case where the channel vectors of different users are orthogonal. Secondly, for the general multi-user case, we propose a novel branch and bound (B\&B) algorithm based on the McCormick envelope relaxation. The proposed algorithm is guaranteed to find the globally optimal solution to the formulated problem. Thirdly, we design a graph neural network (GNN) based pruning policy to determine irrelevant nodes that can be directly pruned in the proposed B\&B algorithm, thereby significantly reducing the number of unnecessary enumerations therein and improving its computational efficiency. Simulation results show the efficiency of the proposed vanilla and GNN-based accelerated B\&B algorithms.

A Unified Inexact Stochastic ADMM for Composite Nonconvex and Nonsmooth Optimization

In this paper, we propose a unified framework of inexact stochastic Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) for solving nonconvex problems subject to linear constraints, whose objective comprises an average of finite-sum smooth functions and a nonsmooth but possibly nonconvex function. The new framework is highly versatile. Firstly, it not only covers several existing algorithms such as SADMM, SVRG-ADMM, and SPIDER-ADMM but also guides us to design a novel accelerated hybrid stochastic ADMM algorithm, which utilizes a new hybrid estimator to trade-off variance and bias. Second, it enables us to exploit a more flexible dual stepsize in the convergence analysis. Under some mild conditions, our unified framework preserves $\mathcal{O}(1/T)$ sublinear convergence. Additionally, we establish the linear convergence under error bound conditions. Finally, numerical experiments demonstrate the efficacy of the new algorithm for some nonsmooth and nonconvex problems.

Propagation and Pitfalls: Reasoning-based Assessment of Knowledge Editing through Counterfactual Tasks

Current approaches of knowledge editing struggle to effectively propagate updates to interconnected facts. In this work, we delve into the barriers that hinder the appropriate propagation of updated knowledge within these models for accurate reasoning. To support our analysis, we introduce a novel reasoning-based benchmark -- ReCoE (Reasoning-based Counterfactual Editing dataset) -- which covers six common reasoning schemes in real world. We conduct a thorough analysis of existing knowledge editing techniques, including input augmentation, finetuning, and locate-and-edit. We found that all model editing methods show notably low performance on this dataset, especially in certain reasoning schemes. Our analysis over the chain-of-thought generation of edited models further uncover key reasons behind the inadequacy of existing knowledge editing methods from a reasoning standpoint, involving aspects on fact-wise editing, fact recall ability, and coherence in generation. We will make our benchmark publicly available.

Globally Optimal Beamforming Design for Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

In this paper, we propose a multi-input multi-output beamforming transmit optimization model for joint radar sensing and multi-user communications, where the design of the beamformers is formulated as an optimization problem whose objective is a weighted combination of the sum rate and the Cramér-Rao bound, subject to the transmit power budget constraint. In this paper, we propose an efficient global branch-and-bound algorithm for solving the formulated problem based on the McCormick envelope relaxation and the semidefinite relaxation technique. The proposed algorithm is guaranteed to find the global solution for the considered problem, and thus serves as an important benchmark for performance evaluation of the existing local or suboptimal algorithms for solving the same problem.

Shedding light on charmonium

We investigate E1 radiative transitions within charmonium in a relativistic approach based on light-front QCD. In quantum field theory, two sets of processes are pure E1: $χ_{c0} \to J/ψγ$ ($ψ\to χ_{c0}γ$) and $h_c \to η_cγ$ ($η_c' \to h_cγ$), both involving the $P$-wave charmonia. We compute the E1 radiative decay widths as well as the corresponding transition form factors of various processes including those involving $2P$ states. These observables provide an access to the microscopic structures of the $P$-wave charmonium. We show that our parameter-free predictions are in excellent agreement with the experimental measurements as well as lattice simulations whenever available.

NIPD: A Federated Learning Person Detection Benchmark Based on Real-World Non-IID Data

Federated learning (FL), a privacy-preserving distributed machine learning, has been rapidly applied in wireless communication networks. FL enables Internet of Things (IoT) clients to obtain well-trained models while preventing privacy leakage. Person detection can be deployed on edge devices with limited computing power if combined with FL to process the video data directly at the edge. However, due to the different hardware and deployment scenarios of different cameras, the data collected by the camera present non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID), and the global model derived from FL aggregation is less effective. Meanwhile, existing research lacks public data set for real-world FL object detection, which is not conducive to studying the non-IID problem on IoT cameras. Therefore, we open source a non-IID IoT person detection (NIPD) data set, which is collected from five different cameras. To our knowledge, this is the first true device-based non-IID person detection data set. Based on this data set, we explain how to establish a FL experimental platform and provide a benchmark for non-IID person detection. NIPD is expected to promote the application of FL and the security of smart city.

Few-Shot Data-to-Text Generation via Unified Representation and Multi-Source Learning

We present a novel approach for structured data-to-text generation that addresses the limitations of existing methods that primarily focus on specific types of structured data. Our proposed method aims to improve performance in multi-task training, zero-shot and few-shot scenarios by providing a unified representation that can handle various forms of structured data such as tables, knowledge graph triples, and meaning representations. We demonstrate that our proposed approach can effectively adapt to new structured forms, and can improve performance in comparison to current methods. For example, our method resulted in a 66% improvement in zero-shot BLEU scores when transferring models trained on table inputs to a knowledge graph dataset. Our proposed method is an important step towards a more general data-to-text generation framework.

Distributed Scaled Proximal ADMM Algorithms for Cooperative Localization in WSNs

Distributed cooperative localization in wireless networks is a challenging problem since it typically requires solving a large-scale nonconvex and nonsmooth optimization problem. In this paper, we reformulate the classic cooperative localization problem as a smooth and constrained nonconvex minimization problem while its loss function is separable over nodes. By utilizing the structure of the reformulation, we propose two novel scaled proximal alternating direction method of multipliers (SP-ADMM) algorithms, which can be implemented in a distributed manner. Compared with the classic semi-definite programming relaxation techniques, the proposed algorithms can provide more accurate position estimates with significantly lower computation complexity. The associated theoretical analysis shows that our algorithms {\blue globally converge to a KKT point} of the reformulated problem and a critical point of the original problem, with a favorable sublinear $\mathcal{O}\left(1/T\right)$ convergence rate, where $T$ is the iteration counter. Numerical experiments have consistently shown that the proposed SP-ADMM algorithms are superior to state-of-the-art methods in terms of localization accuracy and computational complexity across all tested scenarios, varying network size, number of anchors, average number of neighbors, and noise variance levels.

UNITE: A Unified Benchmark for Text-to-SQL Evaluation

A practical text-to-SQL system should generalize well on a wide variety of natural language questions, unseen database schemas, and novel SQL query structures. To comprehensively evaluate text-to-SQL systems, we introduce a UNIfied benchmark for Text-to-SQL Evaluation (UNITE). It is composed of publicly available text-to-SQL datasets, containing natural language questions from more than 12 domains, SQL queries from more than 3.9K patterns, and 29K databases. Compared to the widely used Spider benchmark, we introduce $\sim$120K additional examples and a threefold increase in SQL patterns, such as comparative and boolean questions. We conduct a systematic study of six state-of-the-art (SOTA) text-to-SQL parsers on our new benchmark and show that: 1) Codex performs surprisingly well on out-of-domain datasets; 2) specially designed decoding methods (e.g. constrained beam search) can improve performance for both in-domain and out-of-domain settings; 3) explicitly modeling the relationship between questions and schemas further improves the Seq2Seq models. More importantly, our benchmark presents key challenges towards compositional generalization and robustness issues -- which these SOTA models cannot address well. An Accelerated Stochastic ADMM for Nonconvex and Nonsmooth Finite-Sum Optimization

The nonconvex and nonsmooth finite-sum optimization problem with linear constraint has attracted much attention in the fields of artificial intelligence, computer, and mathematics, due to its wide applications in machine learning and the lack of efficient algorithms with convincing convergence theories. A popular approach to solve it is the stochastic Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM), but most stochastic ADMM-type methods focus on convex models. In addition, the variance reduction (VR) and acceleration techniques are useful tools in the development of stochastic methods due to their simplicity and practicability in providing acceleration characteristics of various machine learning models. However, it remains unclear whether accelerated SVRG-ADMM algorithm (ASVRG-ADMM), which extends SVRG-ADMM by incorporating momentum techniques, exhibits a comparable acceleration characteristic or convergence rate in the nonconvex setting. To fill this gap, we consider a general nonconvex nonsmooth optimization problem and study the convergence of ASVRG-ADMM. By utilizing a well-defined potential energy function, we establish its sublinear convergence rate $O(1/T)$, where $T$ denotes the iteration number. Furthermore, under the additional Kurdyka-Lojasiewicz (KL) property which is less stringent than the frequently used conditions for showcasing linear convergence rates, such as strong convexity, we show that the ASVRG-ADMM sequence has a finite length and converges to a stationary solution with a linear convergence rate. Several experiments on solving the graph-guided fused lasso problem and regularized logistic regression problem validate that the proposed ASVRG-ADMM performs better than the state-of-the-art methods.

XSemPLR: Cross-Lingual Semantic Parsing in Multiple Natural Languages and Meaning Representations

Cross-Lingual Semantic Parsing (CLSP) aims to translate queries in multiple natural languages (NLs) into meaning representations (MRs) such as SQL, lambda calculus, and logic forms. However, existing CLSP models are separately proposed and evaluated on datasets of limited tasks and applications, impeding a comprehensive and unified evaluation of CLSP on a diverse range of NLs and MRs. To this end, we present XSemPLR, a unified benchmark for cross-lingual semantic parsing featured with 22 natural languages and 8 meaning representations by examining and selecting 9 existing datasets to cover 5 tasks and 164 domains. We use XSemPLR to conduct a comprehensive benchmark study on a wide range of multilingual language models including encoder-based models (mBERT, XLM-R), encoder-decoder models (mBART, mT5), and decoder-based models (Codex, BLOOM). We design 6 experiment settings covering various lingual combinations (monolingual, multilingual, cross-lingual) and numbers of learning samples (full dataset, few-shot, and zero-shot). Our experiments show that encoder-decoder models (mT5) achieve the highest performance compared with other popular models, and multilingual training can further improve the average performance. Notably, multilingual large language models (e.g., BLOOM) are still inadequate to perform CLSP tasks. We also find that the performance gap between monolingual training and cross-lingual transfer learning is still significant for multilingual models, though it can be mitigated by cross-lingual few-shot training. Our dataset and code are available at https://github.com/psunlpgroup/XSemPLR.

Generate then Select: Open-ended Visual Question Answering Guided by World Knowledge

The open-ended Visual Question Answering (VQA) task requires AI models to jointly reason over visual and natural language inputs using world knowledge. Recently, pre-trained Language Models (PLM) such as GPT-3 have been applied to the task and shown to be powerful world knowledge sources. However, these methods suffer from low knowledge coverage caused by PLM bias -- the tendency to generate certain tokens over other tokens regardless of prompt changes, and high dependency on the PLM quality -- only models using GPT-3 can achieve the best result. To address the aforementioned challenges, we propose RASO: a new VQA pipeline that deploys a generate-then-select strategy guided by world knowledge for the first time. Rather than following the de facto standard to train a multi-modal model that directly generates the VQA answer, RASO first adopts PLM to generate all the possible answers, and then trains a lightweight answer selection model for the correct answer. As proved in our analysis, RASO expands the knowledge coverage from in-domain training data by a large margin. We provide extensive experimentation and show the effectiveness of our pipeline by advancing the state-of-the-art by 4.1% on OK-VQA, without additional computation cost. Code and models are released at http://cogcomp.org/page/publication_view/1010

Benchmarking Diverse-Modal Entity Linking with Generative Models

Entities can be expressed in diverse formats, such as texts, images, or column names and cell values in tables. While existing entity linking (EL) models work well on per modality configuration, such as text-only EL, visual grounding, or schema linking, it is more challenging to design a unified model for diverse modality configurations. To bring various modality configurations together, we constructed a benchmark for diverse-modal EL (DMEL) from existing EL datasets, covering all three modalities including text, image, and table. To approach the DMEL task, we proposed a generative diverse-modal model (GDMM) following a multimodal-encoder-decoder paradigm. Pre-training \Model with rich corpora builds a solid foundation for DMEL without storing the entire KB for inference. Fine-tuning GDMM builds a stronger DMEL baseline, outperforming state-of-the-art task-specific EL models by 8.51 F1 score on average. Additionally, extensive error analyses are conducted to highlight the challenges of DMEL, facilitating future research on this task.
