Analysis of the current status of tuberculosis transmission in China based on a heterogeneity model

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease transmitted through the respiratory system. China is one of the countries with a high burden of TB. Since 2004, an average of more than 800,000 cases of active TB have been reported each year in China. Analyzing the case data from 2004-2018, we find significant differences in TB incidence by age group. Therefore, the effect of age heterogeneous structure on TB transmission needs further study. We develop a model of TB to explore the role of age heterogeneity as a factor in TB transmission. The model is fitted numerically using the nonlinear least squares method to obtain the key parameters in the model, and the basic reproduction number Rv 0.8017 is calculated and the sensitivity anal-ysis of Rv to the parameters is given. The simulation results show that reducing the number of new infections in the elderly population and increasing the recovery rate of elderly patients with the disease could significantly reduce the transmission of tuberculosis. Furthermore the feasibility of achieving the goals of the WHO End TB Strategy in China is assessed, and we obtain that with existing TB control measures it will take another 30 years for China to reach the WHO goal to reduce 90% of the number of new cases by year 2049. However, in theoretical it is feasible to reach the WHO strategic goal of ending tuberculosis by 2035 if the group contact rate in the elderly population can be reduced though it is difficulty to reduce the contact rate.

Unsupervised Time-Aware Sampling Network with Deep Reinforcement Learning for EEG-Based Emotion Recognition

Recognizing human emotions from complex, multivariate, and non-stationary electroencephalography (EEG) time series is essential in affective brain-computer interface. However, because continuous labeling of ever-changing emotional states is not feasible in practice, existing methods can only assign a fixed label to all EEG timepoints in a continuous emotion-evoking trial, which overlooks the highly dynamic emotional states and highly non-stationary EEG signals. To solve the problems of high reliance on fixed labels and ignorance of time-changing information, in this paper we propose a time-aware sampling network (TAS-Net) using deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for unsupervised emotion recognition, which is able to detect key emotion fragments and disregard irrelevant and misleading parts. Extensive experiments are conducted on three public datasets (SEED, DEAP, and MAHNOB-HCI) for emotion recognition using leave-one-subject-out cross-validation, and the results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method against previous unsupervised emotion recognition methods.

PR-PL: A Novel Transfer Learning Framework with Prototypical Representation based Pairwise Learning for EEG-Based Emotion Recognition

Affective brain-computer interfaces based on electroencephalography (EEG) is an important branch in the field of affective computing. However, individual differences and noisy labels seriously limit the effectiveness and generalizability of EEG-based emotion recognition models. In this paper, we propose a novel transfer learning framework with Prototypical Representation based Pairwise Learning (PR-PL) to learn discriminative and generalized prototypical representations for emotion revealing across individuals and formulate emotion recognition as pairwise learning for alleviating the reliance on precise label information. Extensive experiments are conducted on two benchmark databases under four cross-validation evaluation protocols (cross-subject cross-session, cross-subject within-session, within-subject cross-session, and within-subject within-session). The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed PR-PL against the state-of-the-arts under all four evaluation protocols, which shows the effectiveness and generalizability of PR-PL in dealing with the ambiguity of EEG responses in affective studies. EEGFuseNet: Hybrid Unsupervised Deep Feature Characterization and Fusion for High-Dimensional EEG with An Application to Emotion Recognition

How to effectively and efficiently extract valid and reliable features from high-dimensional electroencephalography (EEG), particularly how to fuse the spatial and temporal dynamic brain information into a better feature representation, is a critical issue in brain data analysis. Most current EEG studies work in a task driven manner and explore the valid EEG features with a supervised model, which would be limited by the given labels to a great extent. In this paper, we propose a practical hybrid unsupervised deep convolutional recurrent generative adversarial network based EEG feature characterization and fusion model, which is termed as EEGFuseNet. EEGFuseNet is trained in an unsupervised manner, and deep EEG features covering both spatial and temporal dynamics are automatically characterized. Comparing to the existing features, the characterized deep EEG features could be considered to be more generic and independent of any specific EEG task. The performance of the extracted deep and low-dimensional features by EEGFuseNet is carefully evaluated in an unsupervised emotion recognition application based on three public emotion databases. The results demonstrate the proposed EEGFuseNet is a robust and reliable model, which is easy to train and performs efficiently in the representation and fusion of dynamic EEG features. In particular, EEGFuseNet is established as an optimal unsupervised fusion model with promising cross-subject emotion recognition performance. It proves EEGFuseNet is capable of characterizing and fusing deep features that imply comparative cortical dynamic significance corresponding to the changing of different emotion states, and also demonstrates the possibility of realizing EEG based cross-subject emotion recognition in a pure unsupervised manner.

Rate compatible reconciliation for continuous-variable quantum key distribution using Raptor-like LDPC codes

In the practical continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) system, the postprocessing process, particularly the error correction part, significantly impacts the system performance. Multi-edge type low-density parity-check (MET-LDPC) codes are suitable for CV-QKD systems because of their Shannon-limit-approaching performance at a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). However, the process of designing a low-rate MET-LDPC code with good performance is extremely complicated. Thus, we introduce Raptor-like LDPC (RL-LDPC) codes into the CV-QKD system, exhibiting both the rate compatible property of the Raptor code and capacity-approaching performance of MET-LDPC codes. Moreover, this technique can significantly reduce the cost of constructing a new matrix. We design the RL-LDPC matrix with a code rate of 0.02 and easily and effectively adjust this rate from 0.016 to 0.034. Simulation results show that we can achieve more than 98% reconciliation efficiency in a range of code rate variation using only one RL-LDPC code that can support high-speed decoding with an SNR less than -16.45 dB. This code allows the system to maintain a high key extraction rate under various SNRs, paving the way for practical applications of CV-QKD systems with different transmission distances.

Role of Digital Twin in Optical Communication: Fault Management, Hardware Configuration, and Transmission Simulation

Optical communication is developing rapidly in the directions of hardware resource diversification, transmission system flexibility, and network function virtualization. Its proliferation poses a significant challenge to traditional optical communication management and control systems. Digital twin (DT), a technology that utilizes data, models, and algorithms and integrates multiple disciplines, acts as a bridge between the real and virtual worlds for comprehensive connectivity. In the digital space, virtual models are stablished dynamically to simulate and describe the states, behaviors, and rules of physical objects in the physical space. DT has been significantly developed and widely applied in industrial and military fields. This study introduces the DT technology to optical communication through interdisciplinary crossing and proposes a DT framework suitable for optical communication. The intelligent fault management model, flexible hardware configuration model, and dynamic transmission simulation model are established in the digital space with the help of deep learning algorithms to ensure the highreliability operation and high-efficiency management of optical communication systems and networks.

Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution with Rateless Reconciliation Protocol

Information reconciliation is crucial for continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) because its performance affects the secret key rate and maximal secure transmission distance. Fixed-rate error correction codes limit the potential applications of the CV-QKD because of the difficulty of optimizing such codes for different low SNRs. In this paper, we propose a rateless reconciliation protocol combined multidimensional scheme with Raptor codes that not only maintains the rateless property but also achieves high efficiency in different SNRs using just one degree distribution. It significantly decreases the complexity of optimization and increases the robustness of the system. Using this protocol, the CV-QKD system can operate with the optimal modulation variance which maximizes the secret key rate. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol can achieve reconciliation efficiency of more than 95% within the range of SNR from -20 dB to 0 dB. It also shows that we can obtain a high secret key rate at arbitrary distances in a certain range and achieve a secret key rate of about 5*10^(-4) bits/pulse at a maximum distance of 132 km (corresponding SNR is -20dB) that is higher than previous works. The proposed protocol can maintain high efficient key extraction under the wide range of SNRs and paves the way toward the practical application of CV-QKD systems in flexible scenarios.

Turbulence-Resistant All Optical Relaying Based on Few-Mode EDFA in Free-Space Optical Systems

We investigate the communication performance of a few-mode EDFA based all-optical relaying system for atmospheric channels in this paper. A dual-hop free space optical communication model based on the relay with two-mode EDFA is derived. The BER performance is numerically calculated. Compared with all-optical relaying system with single-mode EDFA, the power budget is increased by 4 dB, 7.5 dB and 11.5 dB at BER = 1E-4 under the refractive index structure constant Cn2 = 2E-14, 5E-14 and 1E-13 respectively when a few mode fiber supporting 4 modes is utilized as the receiving fiber at the destination. The optimal relay location is slightly backward from the middle of the link. The BER performance is the best when mode-dependent gain of FM-EDFA is zero.

Sparsest Error Detection via Sparsity Invariant Transformation based $\ell_1$ Minimization

This paper presents a new method, referred to here as the sparsity invariant transformation based $\ell_1$ minimization, to solve the $\ell_0$ minimization problem for an over-determined linear system corrupted by additive sparse errors with arbitrary intensity. Many previous works have shown that $\ell_1$ minimization can be applied to realize sparse error detection in many over-determined linear systems. However, performance of this approach is strongly dependent on the structure of the measurement matrix, which limits application possibility in practical problems. Here, we present a new approach based on transforming the $\ell_0$ minimization problem by a linear transformation that keeps sparsest solutions invariant. We call such a property a sparsity invariant property (SIP), and a linear transformation with SIP is referred to as a sparsity invariant transformation (SIT). We propose the SIT-based $\ell_1$ minimization method by using an SIT in conjunction with $\ell_1$ relaxation on the $\ell_0$ minimization problem. We prove that for any over-determined linear system, there always exists a specific class of SIT's that guarantees a solution to the SIT-based $\ell_1$ minimization is a sparsest-errors solution. Besides, a randomized algorithm based on Monte Carlo simulation is proposed to search for a feasible SIT.

New Accumulative Score Function Based Bound For Sparsity Level of L1 Minimization

This paper discusses a fundamental problem in compressed sensing: the sparse recoverability of L1 minimization with an arbitrary sensing matrix. We develop an new accumulative score function (ASF) to provide a lower bound for the recoverable sparsity level (SL) of a sensing matrix while preserving a low computational complexity. We first define a score function for each row of a matrix, and then ASF sums up large scores until the total score reaches 0.5. Interestingly, the number of involved rows in the summation is a reliable lower bound of SL. It is further proved that ASF provides a sharper bound for SL than coherence We also investigate the underlying relationship between the new ASF and the classical RIC and achieve a RIC-based bound for SL.

Relationships among Interpolation Bases of Wavelet Spaces and Approximation Spaces

A multiresolution analysis is a nested chain of related approximation spaces. This nesting in turn implies relationships among interpolation bases in the approximation spaces and their derived wavelet spaces. Using these relationships, a necessary and sufficient condition is given for existence of interpolation wavelets, via analysis of the corresponding scaling functions. It is also shown that any interpolation function for an approximation space plays the role of a special type of scaling function (an interpolation scaling function) when the corresponding family of approximation spaces forms a multiresolution analysis. Based on these interpolation scaling functions, a new algorithm is proposed for constructing corresponding interpolation wavelets (when they exist in a multiresolution analysis). In simulations, our theorems are tested for several typical wavelet spaces, demonstrating our theorems for existence of interpolation wavelets and for constructing them in a general multiresolution analysis.
