Factorization and monotonicity methods for reconstructing impenetrable obstacles in inverse biharmonic scattering

The inverse scattering problem for biharmonic waves, governing flexural vibrations of elastic plates, presents fundamental analytical challenges distinct from acoustic inverse problems due to the fourth-order differential operator and higher-order boundary conditions. This paper addresses the reconstruction of impenetrable obstacles with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions from far-field measurements. We establish new factorizations of the far-field operator by considering structures of the biharmonic fundamental solution and the boundary conditions. We rigorously prove that the factorizations satisfy the range identities and derive characterizations of the obstacle's support by the factorization methods, valid for all wavenumbers except the associated transmission eigenvalues. Furthermore, we establish a monotonicity relation for the eigenvalues of the far-field operator, which yields an alternative characterization of the obstacle's support that remains applicable for all wavenumbers. Numerical experiments for the Dirichlet obstacles with various shapes are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed reconstruction schemes.

A time-nonlocal multiphysics finite element method with Crank-Nicolson scheme for poroelasticity model with secondary consolidation

The paper studies a time-nonlocal multiphysics finite element method with Crank-Nicolson scheme for poroelasticity model with secondary consolidation. For the case where the physical parameters $\lambda,\lambda^*$ and $c_0$ are all finite positive constants, by introducing two auxiliary variables-the fluid content $\eta$ and the generalized pressure $\xi$ -- the original strongly coupled poroelasticity model is reformulated into a generalized Stokes equation with time integral terms and a diffusion equation. The reformulated model not only reveals the underlying multiphysics processes in the original model, but also exhibits time-nonlocal characteristics. A time-nonlocal multiphysics finite element method is designed for the reformulated model: the spatial discretization employs high order Taylor-Hood mixed finite element method, and the temporal discretization adopts the Crank-Nicolson scheme. The time integral terms are approximated using the composite trapezoidal rule, and the integral terms $J_{\xi}^n$ and $J_{\eta}^n$ are introduced for real-time updates, which not only avoids repeated calculations and improves efficiency, but also maintains second-order temporal accuracy. The existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for the reformulated model are proved via energy estimate methods, the stability of the fully discrete time-nonlocal multiphysics finite element method is established, and optimal-order error estimates are derived using projection operator techniques. Finally, numerical example verified the theoretical results and compared the long-time convergence of the Crank-Nicolson scheme and the backward Euler scheme.

Optimal Error Estimates of a new Multiphysic Finite Element Method for Nonlinear Poroelasticity model with Hencky-Mises Stress Tensor

In this paper, we develop a new multiphysics finite element method for a nonlinear poroelastic model with Hencky-Mises stress tensor. By introducing some new notations, we reformulate the original model into a fluid-fluid coupling problem, which is viewed as a generalized nonlinear Stokes sub-problem combined with a reaction-diffusion sub-problem. Then, we establish the existence and uniqueness of the weak solution for the reformulated problem, and propose a stable, fully discrete multiphysics finite element method which employs Lagrangian finite element pairs for spatial discretization and a backward Euler scheme for temporal discretization. By ensuring the parameters $\kappa_1$ and $\kappa_3$ remain bounded and non-zero even as $\lambda$ tends to infinity, the proposed method maintains stability for a wide range of Lagrangian element pairs. Based on the continuity and monotonicity of the nonlinear term $\mathcal{N}(\varepsilon(\mathbf{u}_h^{n}))$, we give the stability analysis and derive optimal error estimates for the displacement vector $\mathbf{u}$ and the pressure $p$ in both $L^2$-norm and $H^1$-norm. In particular, the $L^2$-norm error estimate for the displacement $\mathbf{u}$, which was not present in previous literature, is established here through an auxiliary problem and a Poincar$\acute{e}$ inequality. Also, we present numerical tests to verify the theoretical analysis, and the results confirm the optimal convergence rates. Finally, we draw conclusions to summarize the work.

Optimal $L^2$-norm error estimate of multiphysics finite element method for poroelasticity model and simulating brain edema

In this paper, we derive an optimal $L^2$-norm error estimate of the multiphysics finite element method for the poroelasticity model by introducing an auxiliary problem. We show some numerical tests to verify the theoretical result and apply the multiphysics finite element method to simulate the brain edema which caused by abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in injured areas. And we investigate the effects of the key physical parameters on brain edema and observed that the permeability $K$ has the biggest influence on intracranial pressure and tissue deformation, Young's modulus $E$ and Poisson ratio $\nu$ have little effect on the maximum value of intracranial pressure, but have great effect on the tissue deformation and the developing speed of brain edema.

A Parallel Solver with Multiphysics Finite Element Method for Poroelasticity Coupled with Elasticity Model

In this paper, we propose a parallel solver for solving the quasi-static linear poroelasticity coupled with linear elasticity model in the Lagrange multiplier framework. Firstly, we reformulate the model into a coupling of the nearly incompressible elasticity and an unsteady affection-diffusion equations by setting new variable ``elastic pressure" and ``volumetric fluid content". And we introduce a Lagrange multiplier to guarantee the normal stress continuity on the interface. Then, we give the variational formulations in each subdomain and choose the $\boldsymbol{P}_k$-$P_1$-$P_1$ mixed finite element tuple for poroelasticity subdomain, and $\boldsymbol{P}_k$-$P_1$ finite element pair ($k=1,2$) for elasticity subdomain and the backward Euler scheme for time. Also, we propose a parallel solver for solving the fully discrete scheme at each time step -- the FETI method with a classical FETI preconditioner for solving the Lagrange multiplier and calculating the subproblems in each subdomain in parallel. And we show several numerical tests to validate the computational efficiency and the convergence error order, and we consider Barry-Mercer's model as the benchmark test to show that there no oscillation in the computed pressure. Finally, we draw conclusions to summarize the main results of this paper.

A direct imaging method for inverse scattering problem of biharmonic wave with phased and phaseless data

This paper investigates the inverse biharmonic scattering problems of identifying the shape and location of the obstacle with phased and phaseless measurement data. A direct imaging method based on reverse time migration is proposed for reconstructing the extended obstacle with one of four types of boundary conditions on the obstacle. The newly developed imaging functions are constructed by utilizing merely one of various measurement data, including the scattered field, its normal derivative, the bending moment, the transverse force, its far-field and the phaseless total field. Our resolution analysis demonstrates that these imaging functions have a contrast when sampling points are near or far from the boundary of the obstacle. Numerical experiments are further presented to show the algorithm's efficiency to accurately reconstruct complex scatter geometries and its robustness to noise.

A new mixed finite element method for arbitrary element pair for a quasi-static nonlinear permeability thermo-poroelasticity model

In this paper, we develop a multiphysics finite element method for solving the quasi-static thermo-poroelasticity model with nonlinear permeability. The model involves multiple physical processes such as deformation, pressure, diffusion and heat transfer. To reveal the multi-physical processes of deformation, diffusion and heat transfer, we reformulate the original model into a fluid coupled problem that is general Stokes equation coupled with two reaction-diffusion equations. Then, we prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solution for the original problem by the $B$-operator technique and by sequence approximation for the reformulated problem. As for the reformulated problem we propose a fully discrete finite element method which can use arbitrary finite element pairs to solve the displacement $\bu$ pressure $\tau $ and variable $\varpi,\varsigma$, and the backward Euler method for time discretization. Finally, we give the stability analysis of the above proposed method, also we prove that the fully discrete multiphysics finite element method has an optimal convergence order. Numerical experiments show that the proposed method can achieve good results under different finite element pairs and are consistent with the theoretical analysis.

Analysis of multiphysics finite element method for quasi-static thermo-poroelasticity with a nonlinear convective transport term

In this paper, we propose a multiphysics finite element method for a quasi-static thermo-poroelasticity model with a nonlinear convective transport term. To design some stable numerical methods and reveal the multi-physical processes of deformation, diffusion and heat, we introduce three new variables to reformulate the original model into a fluid coupled problem. Then, we introduce an Newton's iterative algorithm by replacing the convective transport term with $\nabla T^{i}\cdot(\bm{K}\nabla p^{i-1})$, $\nabla T^{i-1}\cdot(\bm{K}\nabla p^{i})$ and $\nabla T^{i-1}\cdot(\bm{K}\nabla p^{i-1})$, and apply the Banach fixed point theorem to prove the convergence of the proposed method. Then, we propose a multiphysics finite element method with Newton's iterative algorithm, which is equivalent to a stabilized method, can effectively overcome the numerical oscillation caused by the nonlinear thermal convection term. Also, we prove that the fully discrete multiphysics finite element method has an optimal convergence order. Finally, we draw conclusions to summarize the main results of this paper.

Optimal error estimates of multiphysics finite element method for a nonlinear poroelasticity model with nonlinear stress-strain relations

In this paper, we study the numerical algorithm for a nonlinear poroelasticity model with nonlinear stress-strain relations. By using variable substitution, the original problem can be reformulated to a new coupled fluid-fluid system, that is, a generalized nonlinear Stokes problem of displacement vector field related to pseudo pressure and a diffusion problem of other pseudo pressure fields. A new technique is used to get the existence and uniqueness of the solution of the reformulated model and a fully discrete nonlinear finite element method is proposed to solve the model numerically. The multiphysics finite element is used to get the discretization of the space variable and the backward Euler method is taken as the time-stepping method in the fully discrete case. Stability analysis and the error estimation are given for the fully discrete case and numerical test are taken to verify the theoretical results.

And we design a fully discrete time-stepping scheme to use mixed finite element method for $P_2-P_1-P_1$ element pairs to approximate the space variables and backward Euler method for the time variable, and we prove the discrete energy laws and the optimal convergence order error estimates. Also, we show some numerical examples to verify the theoretical results. Finally, we draw a conclusion to summarize the main results of this paper.

Multiphysics mixed finite element method with Nitsche's technique for Stokes poroelasticity problem

In this paper, we propose a multiphysics mixed finite element method with Nitsche's technique for Stokes-poroelasticity problem. Firstly, we present a multiphysics reformulation of poroelasticity part of the original problem by introducing two pseudo-pressures to reveal the underlying deformation and diffusion multi physical processes in the Stokes-poroelasticity problem. Then, we prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solution of the reformulated and original problem. And we use Nitsche's technique to approximate the coupling condition at the interface to propose a loosely-coupled time-stepping method -- multiphysics mixed finite element method for space variables, and we decouple the reformulated problem into three sub-problems at each time step -- a Stokes problem, a generalized Stokes problem and a mixed diffusion problem. Also, we give the stability analysis and error estimates of the loosely-coupled time-stepping method.

Multirate iterative scheme with multiphysics finite element method for a fluid-saturated poroelasticity

In this paper, we propose a multirate iterative scheme with multiphysics finite element method for a fluid-saturated poroelasticity model. Firstly, we reformulate the original model into a fluid coupled problem to apply the multiphysics finite element method for the discretization of the space variables, and we design a multirate iterative scheme on the time scale which solve a generalized Stokes problem in the coarse time size and solve the diffusion problem in the finer time size according to the characteristics of the poroelasticity problem. Secondly, we prove that the multirate iterative scheme is stable and the numerical solution satisfies some energy conservation laws, which are important to ensure the uniqueness of solution to the decoupled computing problem. Also, we analyze the error estimates to prove that the proposed numerical method doesn't reduce the precision of numerical solution and greatly reduces the computational cost. Finally, we give the numerical tests to verify the theoretical results and draw a conclusion to summary the main results in this paper.

Multiphysics Finite Element Methods for a Poroelasticity Model

This paper concerns with finite element approximations of a quasi-static poroelasticity model in displacement-pressure formulation which describes the dynamics of poro-elastic materials under an applied mechanical force on the boundary. To better describe the multiphysics process of deformation and diffusion for poro-elastic materials, we first present a reformulation of the original model by introducing two pseudo-pressures, one of them is shown to satisfy a diffusion equation, we then propose a time-stepping algorithm which decouples (or couples) the reformulated PDE problem at each time step into two sub-problems, one of which is a generalized Stokes problem for the displacement vector field (of the solid network of the poro-elastic material) along with one pseudo-pressure field and the other is a diffusion problem for the other pseudo-pressure field (of the solvent of the material). In the paper, the Taylor-Hood mixed finite element method combined with the $P_1$-conforming finite element method is used as an example to demonstrate the viability of the proposed multiphysics approach. It is proved that the solutions of the fully discrete finite element methods fulfill a discrete energy law which mimics the differential energy law satisfied by the PDE solution and converges optimally in the energy norm. Moreover, it is showed that the proposed formulation also has a built-in mechanism to overcome so-called "locking phenomenon" associated with the numerical approximations of the poroelasticity model. Numerical experiments are presented to show the performance of the proposed approach and methods and to demonstrate the absence of "locking phenomenon" in our numerical experiments.

Analysis of a new stabilized discontinuous Galerkin method for the reaction-diffusion problem with discontinuous coefficient

In this paper, a new stabilized discontinuous Galerkin method within a new function space setting is introduced, which involves an extra stabilization term on the normal fluxes across the element interfaces. It is different from the general DG methods. The formulation satisfies a local conservation property and we prove well posedness of the new formulation by Inf-Sup condition. A priori error estimates are derived, which are verified by a 2D experiment on a reaction-diffusion type model problem.
