Shadow Removal by a Lightness-Guided Network with Training on Unpaired Data

Shadow removal can significantly improve the image visual quality and has many applications in computer vision. Deep learning methods based on CNNs have become the most effective approach for shadow removal by training on either paired data, where both the shadow and underlying shadow-free versions of an image are known, or unpaired data, where shadow and shadow-free training images are totally different with no correspondence. In practice, CNN training on unpaired data is more preferred given the easiness of training data collection. In this paper, we present a new Lightness-Guided Shadow Removal Network (LG-ShadowNet) for shadow removal by training on unpaired data. In this method, we first train a CNN module to compensate for the lightness and then train a second CNN module with the guidance of lightness information from the first CNN module for final shadow removal. We also introduce a loss function to further utilise the colour prior of existing data. Extensive experiments on widely used ISTD, adjusted ISTD and USR datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods with training on unpaired data.

Nearest neighbor representations of Boolean functions

A nearest neighbor representation of a Boolean function is a set of positive and negative prototypes in $R^n$ such that the function has value 1 on an input iff the closest prototype is positive. For $k$-nearest neighbor representation the majority classification of the $k$ closest prototypes is considered. The nearest neighbor complexity of a Boolean function is the minimal number of prototypes needed to represent the function. We give several bounds for this measure. Separations are given between the cases when prototypes can be real or are required to be Boolean. The complexity of parity is determined exactly. An exponential lower bound is given for mod 2 inner product, and a linear lower bound is given for its $k$-nearest neighbor complexity. The results are proven using connections to other models such as polynomial threshold functions over $\{1, 2\}$. We also discuss some of the many open problems arising.

Quantum approximate algorithm for NP optimization problems with constraints

The Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) is an algorithmic framework for finding approximate solutions to combinatorial optimization problems, derived from an approximation to the Quantum Adiabatic Algorithm (QAA). In solving combinatorial optimization problems with constraints in the context of QAOA or QAA, one needs to find a way to encode problem constraints into the scheme. In this paper, we formalize different constraint types to linear equalities, linear inequalities, and arbitrary form. Based on this, we propose constraint-encoding schemes well-fitting into the QAOA framework for solving NP combinatorial optimization problems. The implemented algorithms demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed scheme by the testing results of varied instances of some well-known NP optimization problems. We argue that our work leads to a generalized framework for finding, in the context of QAOA, high-quality approximate solutions to combinatorial problems with various types of constraints.

A Quantum-based Database Query Scheme for Privacy Preservation in Cloud Environment

Cloud computing is a powerful and popular information technology paradigm that enables data service outsourcing and provides higher-level services with minimal management effort. However, it is still a key challenge to protect data privacy when a user accesses the sensitive cloud data. Privacy-preserving database query allows the user to retrieve a data item from the cloud database without revealing the information of the queried data item, meanwhile limiting user's ability to access other ones. In this study, in order to achieve the privacy preservation and reduce the communication complexity, a quantum-based database query scheme for privacy preservation in cloud environment is developed. Specifically, all the data items of the database are firstly encrypted by different keys for protecting server's privacy, and in order to guarantee the clients' privacy, the server is required to transmit all these encrypted data items to the client with the oblivious transfer strategy. Besides, two oracle operations, a modified Grover iteration, and a special offset encryption mechanism are combined together to ensure that the client can correctly query the desirable data item. Finally, performance evaluation is conducted to validate the correctness, privacy, and efficiency of our proposed scheme.

Spatial search for a general multi-vertex state on graph by continuous-time quantum walks

In this work, we consider the spatial search for a general marked state on graphs by continuous time quantum walks. As a simplest case, we compute the amplitude expression of the search for the multi-vertex uniform superposition state on hypercube, and find that the spatial search algorithm is optimal for the two-vertex uniform state. However, on general graphs, a common formula can't be obtained for searching a general non-uniform superposition state. Fortunately, a Laplacian spectrum condition which determines whether the associated graph could be appropriate for performing the optimal spatial search is presented. The condition implies that if the proportion of the maximum and the non-zero minimum Laplacian eigenvalues is less or equal to 1+sqrt(1/2), then the spatial search is optimal for any general state. At last, we apply this condition to three kind graphs, the induced complete graph, the strongly regular graph and the regular complete multi-partite graphs. By the condition, one can conclude that these graphs will become suitable for optimal search with properly setting their graph parameters.

Boosting work characteristics and overall heat engine performance via shortcuts to adiabaticity: quantum and classical systems

Under a general framework, shortcuts to adiabatic processes are shown to be possible in classical systems. We then study the distribution function of the work done on a small system initially prepared at thermal equilibrium. It is found that the work fluctuations can be significantly reduced via shortcuts to adiabatic processes. For example, in the classical case probabilities of having very large or almost zero work values are suppressed. In the quantum case negative work may be totally removed from the otherwise non-positive-definite work values. We also apply our findings to a micro Otto-cycle-based heat engine. It is shown that the use of shortcuts, which directly enhances the engine output power, can also increase the heat engine efficiency substantially, in both quantum and classical regimes.
