Avoidability of Digraphs with Height Functions and Orientations of $C_4$

A digraph $F$ is avoidable if, for every positive integer $k$, there exists an integer $d$ such that every digraph of minimum out-degree at least $d$ contains an $F$-free subdigraph of minimum out-degree at least $k$. We prove that no digraph admitting a height function is avoidable, where a height function increases by one along every arc. This answers a question of Christoph, Janzer, Petrova, and Steiner and, together with an additional avoidance argument, determines which orientations of $C_4$ are avoidable. Motivated by a further question of Christoph, Janzer, Petrova, and Steiner, we also study Eulerian avoidability, in which the host digraph is required to have equal in-degree and out-degree at every vertex. We show that no one-directed complete bipartite digraph with nonempty parts is Eulerian-avoidable. In contrast, the orientation of $C_4$ consisting of two directed paths of length two with common endpoints is Eulerian-avoidable. Consequently, the one-directed complete bipartite orientation is the only orientation of $C_4$ that is not Eulerian-avoidable, completing the classification of $C_4$-orientations.

Occamy-1.0: Open Pareto-frontier 35B Intelligence for Co-work

Co-work agents execute complex workflows that combine information gathering, tool use, coding, and file manipulation across many model invocations. Because cost and latency accumulate over the full episode, their practical value depends not only on peak capability but also on how efficiently that capability is delivered. Yet many steps in everyday work emphasize state tracking, coordination, recovery, and follow-through rather than frontier-scale reasoning. We present Occamy-1.0, a cost-efficient co-work model obtained by further training the post-trained Qwen3.6-35B-A3B checkpoint. We construct execution-grounded data and environments, capture replayable long-horizon trajectories across multiple harnesses, and use staged post-training to develop and consolidate complementary execution capabilities. Across a broad suite of co-work benchmarks, Occamy-1.0 is consistently among the strongest comparably sized models and remains competitive with substantially larger frontier systems on several tasks. Under our stated evaluation and pricing protocol, its aggregate performance across four representative benchmarks places it at the low-cost knee of the observed cost--performance Pareto frontier. Supporting evaluations in tool calling, coding, and instruction following further show that this specialization preserves broad agentic capability. We release the model weights and a subset of the training data to support research on practical co-work agents and agentic post-training.

A Delayed Radio Flare Traces Kinetic Energy Injection in the SMBHB Candidate SDSS~J143016.05+230344.4

SDSS~J143016.05+230344.4 ($z=0.08105$) has been proposed as a candidate pre-coalescence supermassive black hole binary and shows remarkable multiwavelength variability. Its radio evolution provides a direct probe of the compact emitting region and of the physical origin of the late-time activity. We aim to localize the variable radio emission, characterize its spectral evolution, and constrain whether the radio brightening is produced by a newly emerging compact component, external absorption, or dissipation in a structured circumnuclear environment. At all epochs, the radio emission is dominated by a single unresolved milliarcsecond core with $T_{\rm B} \gtrsim 10^{7}$ K, constraining the variable emission to $\lesssim 0.3$ pc. The broadband spectra require two synchrotron self-absorbed components: a persistent low-frequency component with $ν_{\rm p,steady} \approx 0.74$ GHz and $S_{\rm p,steady} \approx 1.22$ mJy, and a flare component whose turnover evolves from $(6.35 {\rm GHz}, 0.18 {\rm mJy})$ in 2022 February-May to $(8.61 {\rm GHz}, 0.38 {\rm mJy})$ in 2022 December, and then to $(5.83 {\rm GHz}, 0.25 {\rm mJy})$ in 2023 March-April. The flare contribution at 15 GHz reaches $\sim 80\%$ and matches the near-epoch VLBI recovery fraction, showing that the high-frequency brightening arises from a newly formed compact synchrotron component. A second brightening of the 15.2 GHz VLBI core is detected between 2023 September and 2024 February, while the source remains unresolved. Equipartition scalings imply characteristic radii of $\sim 5 \times 10^{-4}$ pc for the flare and $\sim 9 \times 10^{-3}$ pc for the steady component, and indicate a steep inner circumnuclear density profile, $n \propto R^{-1.7}$. The delayed radio flare is best explained by dissipation in an outflow or jet-base disturbance propagating through a structured circumnuclear medium.

Searching for Long-Period Radio Transients in ASKAP EMU Data with 10-Second Imaging

Long-period radio transients (LPTs) are a recently identified phenomenon that challenge our current understanding of compact objects and coherent radio emission mechanisms. These objects emit radio pulses similar to those of pulsars, but at much longer periods -- on the order of minutes to hours. With duty cycles of only a few percent, individual pulses have been observed to last between 10 and 1000 seconds. This places LPTs in a timescale gap between the two main techniques used in transient radio searches: time-series analysis at millisecond to second timescales, and image-plane searches sensitive to variability on the scale of days. As a result, LPTs remained undetected until recently, and only a handful are currently known. To increase the sample of known LPTs, we conducted a dedicated search using 200 hours of archival data from the ASKAP Evolutionary Map of the Universe survey, covering 750 deg$^2$ of sky at the shortest possible imaging time step of 10-seconds. This represents the first large-scale search using ASKAP data at second-scale resolution. Although no LPTs were detected, we identified flares from six stars, at least one had never been detected in the radio regime before. We placed a lower limit on the transient surface density of $2.21\times10^{-6}$ deg$^{-2}$ at a 10-second timescale, with a sensitivity of 16.9 mJy. Our findings evaluate the feasibility of detecting radio transients using 10-second imaging with ASKAP and provide insights into improving detection pipelines and observation strategies for LPTs.

Disorder-induced spin excitation continuum and spin-glass ground state in the inverse spinel CuGa$_2$O$_4$

Spinel-structured compounds serve as prototypical examples of highly frustrated systems, and are promising candidates for realizing the long-sought quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. However, structural disorder is inevitable in many real QSL candidates and its impact remains a topic of intense debate. In this work, we conduct comprehensive investigations on CuGa$_2$O$_4$, a spinel compound with significant structural disorder, focusing on its thermodynamic properties and spectroscopic behaviors. No long-range magnetic order is observed down to $\sim$80 mK, as evidenced by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and elastic neutron scattering measurements. More intriguingly, inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal a broad gapless continuum of magnetic excitations around the Brillouin zone boundary, resembling the magnetic excitation spectra expected for a QSL. Nevertheless, a spin-freezing transition at $T_{\rm{f}} \approx $ 0.88 K is identified from the cusp in the dc susceptibility curves, where a bifurcation between zero-field-cooling and field-cooling curves occurs. Furthermore, ac susceptibility measurements show a peak close to $T_{\rm{f}}$ at low frequency, which shifts to higher temperature with increasing frequency. These results are evident that CuGa$_2$O$_4$ has spin-glass ground state, consistent with the establishment of short-range order inferred from the specific heat measurements. Collectively, these results illustrate the crucial role of disorder in defining the excitation spectrum out of the disordered ground state. Our findings shed light onto the broader class of AB$_2$O$_4$ spinels and advance our understanding of the spin dynamics in magnetically disordered systems.

Development and Performance Validation of a Versatile VLBI Digital Backend Using the ROACH2 Platform

Customized digital backends for Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) are critical components for radio astronomy observatories. There are several serialized products such as the Digital Baseband Converter (DBBC), Reconfigurable Open Architecture Computing Hardware (ROACH) Digital BackEnd (RDBE), and Chinese Data Acquisition System (CDAS). However, the reliance on high-speed analog-to-digital converters (ADC) and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) often necessitates dedicated hardware platforms with long development cycles and prohibitive cost, limiting scalability and adaptability to evolving observational needs. To address these challenges, we propose a design leveraging the versatile and cost-effective ROACH2 hardware platform, developed by CASPER (Collaboration for Astronomy Signal Processing and Electronics Research). ROACH2's mature technology and streamlined firmware development capabilities significantly reduce the hardware platform's development cycle and cost, making it ideal for modern astronomical applications. This VLBI digital backend, based on the ROACH2 platform, incorporates key technologies such as Polyphase Filter Banks (PFB) algorithm implementation, digital complex-to-real baseband signal conversion, Mark5B data formatter design and two-bit optimal threshold quantization. These features ensure compatibility with existing systems while providing enhanced performance. The backend's performance was validated through multi-station VLBI experiments, demonstrating its ability to achieve good correlation fringes compared to the customized CDAS2-D system. Furthermore, this platform offers flexibility for rapid deployment of additional digital backends, such as those for spectral line observations, showcasing its potential for broader astronomical applications.

High-redshift quasars at $z \geq 3$ -- III. Parsec-scale jet properties from VLBI observations

High redshift active galactic nuclei (AGN) provide key insights into early supermassive black hole growth and cosmic evolution. This study investigates the parsec-scale properties of 86 radio-loud quasars at z $\geq$ 3 using very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations. Our results show predominantly compact core and core-jet morphologies, with 35\% unresolved cores, 59\% core-jet structures, and only 6\% core-double jet morphology. Brightness temperatures are generally lower than expected for highly radiative sources. The jet proper motions are surprisingly slow compared to lower-redshift samples. We observe a high fraction of young and/or confined peak-spectrum sources, providing insights into early AGN evolution in dense environments during early cosmic epochs. The observed trends may reflect genuine evolutionary changes in AGN structure over cosmic time, or selection effects favoring more compact sources at higher redshifts. These results stress the complexity of high-redshift radio-loud AGN populations and emphasize the need for multi-wavelength, high-resolution observations to fully characterize their properties and evolution through cosmic history.

"A good pun is its own reword": Can Large Language Models Understand Puns?

Puns play a vital role in academic research due to their distinct structure and clear definition, which aid in the comprehensive analysis of linguistic humor. However, the understanding of puns in large language models (LLMs) has not been thoroughly examined, limiting their use in creative writing and humor creation. In this paper, we leverage three popular tasks, i.e., pun recognition, explanation and generation to systematically evaluate the capabilities of LLMs in pun understanding. In addition to adopting the automated evaluation metrics from prior research, we introduce new evaluation methods and metrics that are better suited to the in-context learning paradigm of LLMs. These new metrics offer a more rigorous assessment of an LLM's ability to understand puns and align more closely with human cognition than previous metrics. Our findings reveal the "lazy pun generation" pattern and identify the primary challenges LLMs encounter in understanding puns.

VLBI observations of the high-redshift X-ray bright blazar SRGE J170245.3+130104

Aims. The X-ray luminous and radio-loud AGN SRGE J170245.3+130104 discovered at z $\sim$ 5.5 provides unique chances to probe the SMBH growth and evolution with powerful jets in the early Universe. Methods. We present 1.35 - 5.1 GHz Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) results on the radio continuum emission and spectrum analysis for this quasar in a low flux density state. Results. This source is unresolved at three frequencies with the total flux densities of 8.35$\pm$0.09 mJy beam-1, 7.47$\pm$0.08 mJy beam-1, and 6.57$\pm$0.02 mJy beam-1 at 1.73 GHz, 2.26 GHz, and 4.87 GHz, respectively. Meanwhile, the brightness temperature is higher than 109 K. Conclusions. Compared with previous radio observations with arcsec-scale resolution, nearly all the radio emission from this source concentrates in the very central milli-arcsecond (mas) scale area. We confirm this source is a bright blazar at z > 5. This young AGN provide us the great chances to understand the first generation of strong jets in the early Universe.

Status and progress of China SKA Regional Centre prototype

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project consists of delivering two largest radio telescope arrays being built by the SKA Observatory (SKAO), which is an intergovernmental organization bringing together nations from around the world with China being one of the major member countries. The computing resources needed to process, distribute, curate and use the vast amount of data that will be generated by the SKA telescopes are too large for the SKAO to manage on its own. To address this challenge, the SKAO is working with the international community to create a shared, distributed data, computing and networking capability called the SKA Regional Centre Alliance. In this model, the SKAO will be supported by a global network of SKA Regional Centres (SRCs) distributed around the world in its member countries to build an end-to-end science data system that will provide astronomers with high-quality science products. SRCs undertake deep processing, scientific analysis, and long-term storage of the SKA data, as well as user support. China has been actively participating in and promoting the construction of SRCs. This paper introduces the international cooperation and ongoing prototyping of the global SRC network, the construction plan of the China SRC and describes in detail the China SRC prototype. The paper also presents examples of scientific applications of SKA precursor and pathfinder telescopes completed using resources from the China SRC prototype. Finally, the future prospects of the China SRC are presented.

OmniUV: A Multi-Purpose Simulation Toolkit for VLBI Observation

We present OmniUV, a multi-purpose simulation toolkit for space and ground VLBI observations. It supports various kinds of VLBI stations, including Earth (ground) fixed, Earth orbit, Lunar fixed, Lunar orbit, Moon-Earth and Earth-Sun Lagrange 1 and 2 points, etc. The main functionalities of this toolkit are: (1) Trajectory calculation; (2) Baseline uv calculation, by taking the vailability of each station into account; (3) Visibility simulation for the given uv distribution, source structure and system noise; (4) Image and beam reconstruction. Two scenarios, namely space VLBI network and wide field array, are presented as demonstrations of the toolkit applications in completely different scales. OmniUV is the acronym of "Omnipotent UV". We hope it could work as a general framework, in which various kinds of stations could be easily incorporated and the functionalities could be further extended. The toolkit has been made publicly available.

Geometrical frustration versus Kitaev interactions in BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$

Recently, Co-based honeycomb magnets have been proposed as promising candidate materials to host the Kitaev spin liquid state. One of the front-runners is BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ (BCAO), where it was suggested that the exchange processes between Co$^{2+}$ ions via the surrounding edge-sharing oxygen octahedra could give rise to bond-dependent Kitaev interactions. In this work, we present and analyze comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering studies of BCAO with fields in the honeycomb plane. Combining the constraints from the magnon excitations in the high-field polarized state and the inelastic spin structure factor measured in zero magnetic field, we examine two leading theoretical models: the Kitaev-type \JKG model and the \XXZ model. We show that the existing experimental data can be consistently accounted for by the \XXZ model but not by the \JKG model, and we discuss the implications of these results for the realization of a spin liquid phase in BCAO and more generally for the realization of the Kitaev model in cobaltates.

Effect of iron vacancies on the magnetic order and spin dynamics of the spin ladder BaFe$_{2-δ}$S$_{1.5}$Se$_{1.5}$

Quasi-one-dimensional iron chalcogenides possess various magnetic states depending on the lattice distortion, electronic correlations, and presence of defects. We present neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the spin ladder compound BaFe$_{2-δ}$S$_{1.5}$Se$_{1.5}$ with $\sim$6% iron vacancies. The data reveal that long-range magnetic order is absent, while the characteristic magnetic excitations that correspond to both the stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic correlations are observed. First-principles calculations support the existence of both stripe and block-type antiferromagnetic short-range order in the experimental sample. The disappearance of long-range magnetic order may be due to the competition between these two magnetic orders, which is greatly enhanced for a certain concentration of iron vacancies, which we calculate to be about 6%, consistent with the measured iron vacancy concentration. Our results highlight how iron vacancies in the iron-based spin ladder system strongly influence the magnetic ground state.

VOLKS2: a transient search and localization pipeline for VLBI observations

We present VOLKS2, the second release of "VLBI Observation for transient Localization Keen Searcher". The pipeline aims at transient search in regular VLBI observations as well as detection of single pulses from known sources in dedicated VLBI observations. The underlying method takes the idea of geodetic VLBI data processing, including fringe fitting to maximize the signal power and geodetic VLBI solving for localization. By filtering the candidate signals with multiple windows within a baseline and by cross matching with multiple baselines, RFIs are eliminated effectively. Unlike the station auto spectrum based method, RFI flagging is not required in the VOLKS2 pipeline. EVN observation (EL060) is carried out, so as to verify the pipeline's detection efficiency and localization accuracy in the whole FoV. The pipeline is parallelized with MPI and further accelerated with GPU, so as to exploit the hardware resources of modern GPU clusters. We can prove that, with proper optimization, VOLKS2 could achieve comparable performance as auto spectrum based pipelines. All the code and documents are publicly available, in the hope that our pipeline is useful for radio transient studies.

Artificial intelligence for celestial object census: the latest technology meets the oldest science

Large surveys using modern telescopes are producing images that are increasing exponentially in size and quality. Identifying objects in the generated images by visual recognition is time-consuming and labor-intensive, while classifying the extracted radio sources is even more challenging. To address these challenges, we develop a deep learning-based radio source detector, named \textsc{HeTu}, which is capable of rapidly identifying and classifying radio sources in an automated manner for both compact and extended radio sources. \textsc{HeTu} is based on a combination of a residual network (ResNet) and feature pyramid network (FPN). We classify radio sources into four classes based on their morphology. The training images are manually labeled and data augmentation methods are applied to solve the data imbalance between the different classes. \textsc{HeTu} automatically locates the radio sources in the images and assigns them to one of the four classes. The experiment on the testing dataset shows an average operation time of 5.4 millisecond per image and a precision of 99.4\% for compact point-like sources and 98.1\% for double-lobe sources. We applied \textsc{HeTu} to the images obtained from the GaLactic and the Galactic Extragalactic All-Object Murchison Wide-field Array (GLEAM) survey project. More than 96.9\% of the \textsc{HeTu}-detected compact sources are matched compared to the source finding software used in the GLEAM. We also detected and classified 2,298 extended sources (including Fanaroff-Riley type I and II sources, and core-jet sources) above $5σ$. The cross-matching rates of extended sources are higher than 97\%, showing excellent performance of \textsc{HeTu} in identifying extended radio sources. \textsc{HeTu} provides an efficient tool for radio source finding and classification and can be applied to other scientific fields.

Highly tunable magnetic phases in transition metal dichalcogenide Fe$_{1/3+δ}$NbS$_2$

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) host a plethora of interesting physical phenomena ranging from charge order to superconductivity. By introducing magnetic ions into 2H-NbS$_2$, the material forms a family of magnetic intercalated TMDCs T$_x$NbS$_2$ (T = 3d transition metal). Recently, Fe$_{1/3+δ}$NbS$_2$ has been found to possess intriguing resistance switching and magnetic memory effects coupled to the Néel temperature of T$_N \sim 45$ K [1,2]. We present comprehensive single crystal neutron diffraction measurements on under-intercalated ($δ\sim -0.01$), stoichiometric, and over-intercalated ($δ\sim 0.01$) samples. Magnetic defects are usually considered to suppress magnetic correlations and, concomitantly, transition temperatures. Instead, we observe highly tunable magnetic long-ranged states as the Fe concentration is varied from under-intercalated to over-intercalated, that is from Fe vacancies to Fe interstitials. The under- and over- intercalated samples reveal distinct antiferromagnetic stripe and zig-zag orders, associated with wave vectors $k_1$ = (0.5, 0, 0) and $k_2$ = (0.25, 0.5, 0), respectively. The stoichiometric sample shows two successive magnetic phase transitions for these two wave vectors with an unusual rise-and-fall feature in the intensities connected to $k_1$. We ascribe this sensitive tunability to the competing next nearest neighbor exchange interactions and the oscillatory nature of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) mechanism. We discuss experimental observations that relate to the observed intriguing switching resistance behaviors. Our discovery of a magnetic defect tuning of the magnetic structure in bulk crystals Fe$_{1/3+δ}$NbS$_2$ provides a possible new avenue to implement controllable antiferromagnetic spintronic devices.

Non-Thermal Emergence of an Orbital-Selective Mott Phase in FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$

Electronic correlation is of fundamental importance to high temperature superconductivity. Iron-based superconductors are believed to possess moderate correlation strength, which combined with their multi-orbital nature makes them a fascinating platform for the emergence of exotic phenomena. A particularly striking form is the emergence of an orbital selective Mott phase, where the localization of a subset of orbitals leads to a drastically reconstructed Fermi surface. Here, we report spectroscopic evidence of the reorganization of the Fermi surface from FeSe to FeTe as Se is substituted by Te. We uncover a particularly transparent way to visualize the localization of the $d_{xy}$ electron orbital through the suppression of its hybridization with the more coherent $d$ electron orbitals, which leads to a redistribution of the orbital-dependent spectral weight near the Fermi level. These noteworthy features of the Fermi surface are accompanied by a divergent behavior of a band renormalization in the $d_{xy}$ orbital. All of our observations are further supported by our theoretical calculations to be salient spectroscopic signatures of such a non-thermal evolution from a strongly correlated metallic phase towards an orbital-selective Mott phase in FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ as Se concentration is reduced.

Magnetic, superconducting, and topological surface states on Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$

The idea of employing non-Abelian statistics for error-free quantum computing ignited interest in recent reports of topological surface superconductivity and Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$. An associated puzzle is that the topological features and superconducting properties are not observed uniformly across the sample surface. Understanding and practical control of these electronic inhomogeneities present a prominent challenge for potential applications. Here, we combine neutron scattering, scanning angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and microprobe composition and resistivity measurements to characterize the electronic state of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$. We establish a phase diagram in which the superconductivity is observed only at sufficiently low Fe concentration, in association with distinct antiferromagnetic correlations, while the coexisting topological surface state occurs only at sufficiently high Te concentration. We find that FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$ is located very close to both phase boundaries, which explains the inhomogeneity of superconducting and topological states. Our results demonstrate the compositional control required for use of topological MZMs in practical applications.
